SOAKED IN THE SPIRIT
The Lord "does not ration His gift of the Holy Spirit." —John 3:34

Many years ago, as a young adult, I was scheduled to give a talk on prayer at a youth retreat. On the morning of the teaching, I arose an hour before dawn to pray to the Holy Spirit for the talk and for all who would hear it. As I walked the grounds of the retreat center, I was struck by the vivid stars in the predawn sky. The Big Dipper constellation was directly overhead, turned upside down in such a way that it appeared the contents of the Dipper were being poured out upon the entire retreat center. I was awestruck at the thought of countless trillions of gallons of grace being poured out directly upon us.

“The love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit” (Rm 5:5). “He does not ration His gift of the Spirit” (Jn 3:34). God lavishes the Spirit upon us (Ti 3:6). The gifts of the Spirit are poured out without measure, but it’s up to us to receive and use them. The more we use the gifts of the Spirit, the more we receive (Mk 4:25). The Spirit leads us to obey God, and the more we obey, the more we receive the Spirit (Acts 5:32). But if we don’t obey God and refuse to use the gifts of the Spirit, we in effect put up a “spiritual umbrella” and remain dry under the flood of the Spirit.

Take down any spiritual umbrella. Drink deeply of the Spirit. “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22). “Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s lead” (Gal 5:25).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, drench my soul that I may help You drench others with Your grace.

Promise: "...the Holy Spirit, Whom God gives to those that obey Him." —Acts 5:32

Praise: St. Joseph yielded to the Holy Spirit's gift of discernment through his instant recognition of and obedience to multiple dreams from God (see Mt 1:20-21; 2:13-14, 19-22).

ESCAPED, ARMED, AND DANGEROUS
"We found the jail securely locked and the guards at their posts outside the gates, but when we opened it we found no one inside." —Acts 5:23

The Sanhedrin thought the apostles were locked in jail, but actually they were in the Temple preaching “to the people all about this new life” in Jesus (Acts 5:20). The public school system thinks it has its teachers’ faith locked up in a jail of laws forbidding evangelization and prayer in public schools. However, some public school teachers, and even principals, are obeying God rather than men (Acts 5:29). “With full assurance, and without any hindrance whatever,” they are preaching “the reign of God” and teaching “about the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 28:31).

Business and the mass media think they have a lock on our culture with their religion of secular humanism. They intolerantly and militantly ostracize anyone who doesn’t follow the party line. Nevertheless, Christians are letting their light shine (Mt 5:14-16), even in the darkest corners of the “culture of death.”

The world thinks Christians are in prison. While many of us are imprisoned and most of us look imprisoned, some Christians have let the Lord secretly free them. As Jesus rose from the dead and emerged from the tomb, some Christians are no longer shut up “in the grip of the enemy” but are moving “about at large” (Ps 31:9). Watch out, world! Some Christians have been secretly sprung from jail. The Lord has set them “free in the open” (2 Sm 22:20). They will turn this world right side up (see Acts 17:6), as they witness for the risen Christ. They will light a fire on this earth (Lk 12:49). Watch out! Some Christians have escaped. They are armed and extremely dangerous.

Prayer: Father, make me a much greater threat to the devil.

Promise: "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." —Jn 3:16

Praise: Pope St. Pius V brought the light of Christ in a dark place where the Church needed reformation.

GOOD LOOKING
"Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in Him." —John 3:14-15

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus refers to an incident in the Old Testament (Nm 21:4-9). During their forty-year journey in the desert, the Israelites’ patience wore out, and the people “complained against God and Moses” (Nm 21:5). “In punishment the Lord sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of them died” (Nm 21:6). In His mercy, “the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover’ ” (Nm 21:8).

Serpents are still biting people today, through the attack of the original serpent, the devil (Gn 3:1). The poison of the serpent’s bite is the venom of bitterness, unforgiveness, disbelief, and rebellion. In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus tells us that He removes this venom when we simply look upon Him (Jn 3:14-15).

So, we are to look at the Son of Man, Jesus, when He is lifted up. How can we look at Him? Gazing upon a crucifix is a literal way to fulfill this command. Reading the Word of God, especially the Gospels, helps to “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus” (Heb 12:2). Eucharistic Adoration is a prime way. Best of all, attend Mass as often as possible, even daily. Jesus is lifted up in the Mass at the consecration. Gazing on Him at that moment is the supreme way of being healed of the poison of the serpent’s bite. All the ways of fixing your eyes on the lifted-up Jesus are present at each Mass, plus much more. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1, NAB).

Prayer: Father, give me the overwhelming desire to help wounded people fix their eyes on Jesus and be healed.

Promise: "The community of believers were of one heart and one mind." —Acts 4:32

Praise: By the age of twenty-seven, St. Catherine of Siena had led thousands to conversion by her words and her actions.

CHURCH MILITANT OR CHURCH SUPPRESSED?
"They were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak God's word with confidence." —Acts 4:31

The apostles were thrown into prison by the Jewish leaders for healing a crippled man and then “teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection of the dead in the person of Jesus” (Acts 4:2). They were then threatened by the leaders never to mention the name of Jesus again (Acts 4:17) and were released. The apostles returned to the other disciples and prayed for complete assurance when they proclaimed the Word of God (Acts 4:29-30). After this prayer, they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They continued to speak God’s Word with confidence (Acts 4:31).

Like the first believers in the risen Jesus, we must not be alarmed that the powerful of the world rage and conspire against us (see Acts 4:25). The Church and its members have been attacked for centuries. God in heaven simply laughs (Ps 2:4). He has eternal, almighty power. The mighty of the world wield their power for but a moment in time.

Therefore, we must pray for that same confidence, assurance, and boldness that the apostles possessed. God wants us to know confidently that since He is for us, no one can be against us (Rm 8:31). “He Who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 Jn 4:4, RSV-CE). We are more than conquerors in Jesus (Rm 8:37). Persevere in spreading the Word of God. We are invincible when we are rooted in Jesus and stand securely in the center of His will.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, stir up the Holy Spirit in the world. Raise up many teenagers and adults to accept holy, confident, and bold religious vocations and to speak God's Word with confidence.

Promise: "No one can enter into God's kingdom without being begotten of water and Spirit." —Jn 3:5

Praise: St. Louis Mary de Montfort has led many to consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary, His mother.

PASSING ON MERCY
"Let those who fear the Lord say, 'His mercy endures forever.' " —Psalm 118:4

Fr. Al Lauer, founder and longtime author of One Bread, One Body, would often on these pages define mercy as treating someone better than they deserve. On the first Easter evening, Jesus treated His apostles with great mercy. Though they had fled from Him when He was arrested, Jesus did not lay a guilt trip on them. Instead, His first words to them were, “Peace be with you” (Jn 20:19).

It would be understandable if Jesus was reluctant to entrust His disciples with any responsibility. Nonetheless, Jesus still sent them out (Jn 20:21), entrusting them with His power, though they were still fearful (Jn 20:19). He gave them the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22). He gave St. Thomas a second chance to undo his earlier doubts (Jn 20:27); later, He gave St. Peter a second chance to undo his earlier denials (Jn 21:15).

How “rich in mercy” Jesus is! (Eph 2:4) Jesus gives us, His disciples, incredible mercy. Now He has entrusted us with the opportunity to pass on His mercy to others. Who in your life needs a second chance after letting you down miserably? Can you pass on the mercy of God to this person and treat him or her better than they deserve? On this Divine Mercy Sunday, be merciful, as the Lord is merciful (see Lk 6:36, RSV-CE).

Prayer: Jesus, I trust in You. Mercy of God, I trust in You.

Promise: "There is nothing to fear." —Rv 1:17

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who in His great mercy revealed His heart for all to see!

GREATER FAITH
"He took them to task for their disbelief." —Mark 16:14

At the end of St. Mark’s Gospel, the Lord strongly calls us to believe. Jesus’ disciples refused to believe the Resurrection-witness of St. Mary Magdalene or that of the two disciples who met the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus (Mk 16:11, 13). So Jesus “took them to task for their disbelief and their stubbornness, since they had put no faith in those who had seen Him after He had been raised. Then He told them: ‘Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved’ ” (Mk 16:14-16).

At the end of St. Luke’s Gospel, the Lord said: “How slow you are to believe” (Lk 24:25). Then Jesus “opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45), for faith “comes through hearing” and hearing by God’s Word (see Rm 10:17).

At the end of St. John’s Gospel, Jesus said to St. Thomas: “Do not persist in your unbelief, but believe!” (Jn 20:27) Thomas responded by making the great act of faith in Jesus as Lord and God (Jn 20:28). John concludes: “These have been recorded to help you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, so that through this faith you may have life in His name” (Jn 20:31).

Jesus commands us to be His Resurrection witnesses. Without faith we cannot do this. But in faith we “cannot help speaking of what we have heard and seen” of the risen Christ (Acts 4:20).

On this day in the octave of Easter, turn to the risen Christ and cry out: “I believe! Help my unbelief!” (Mk 9:24, RSV-CE)

Prayer: Lord, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5).

Promise: "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight for us to obey you rather than God." —Acts 4:19

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus! Praise Jesus, the Conqueror of death! Alleluia forever!

ONCE AGAIN
"I am going out to fish." —John 21:3

Jesus originally called the disciples to be “fishers of men” (Mt 4:19). Yet in today’s Gospel reading, they were going back to being fishers of fish. However, Jesus intervened and brought them back to the first time He called them.

Notice how precisely Jesus repeats the scene of His first call:

  • The Sea of Galilee (Mt 4:18) is the same body of water as the Sea of Tiberias (Jn 21:1) and the Lake of Gennesaret (Lk 5:1).
  • He issues a command to cast their nets (Lk 5:4; Jn 21:6).
  • There is a huge catch of fish (Lk 5:6; Jn 21:6).
  • St. Peter recognizes Jesus and approaches Him with abandon (Lk 5:8; Jn 21:7).
  • Jesus calls Peter to fish for men instead of fish (Lk 5:10; Jn 21:15-17).
  • The disciples obey Jesus’ call to follow Him (Lk 5:11; Jn 21:15ff).

Has Jesus called you to do something specific for Him yet you have delayed obeying His call? Go back to the memory of His original call, and start following Him again. If He has to, Jesus will call you again. But surely He would prefer you to respond to His original call. “The harvest is good but laborers are scarce” (Mt 9:37). Let’s stop fishing for fish, and go fish for men.

Prayer: Lord, may I "be quick to hear" You (Jas 1:19) and always act on Your Word (Jas 1:22).

Promise: "There is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved." —Acts 4:12

Praise: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it" (Ps 118:24).

CATALYTIC CONVERTER - One Bread, One Body, 04/24/2025

CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Jesus said: " 'Everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms had to be fulfilled.' Then He opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures." —Luke 24:44-45

We recognize the risen Christ when:

  • Jesus opens our “minds to the understanding of the Scriptures,”
  • Jesus breaks bread with us (Lk 24:35), that is, gives Himself to us in Holy Communion,
  • we receive the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost, and
  • we witness for Jesus (see Acts 1:8; Lk 24:48).

The beginning of a real Easter is to hear God’s Word so that our hearts are burning with purifying fire (Lk 24:32). As long as God’s Word is being proclaimed, we can expect that all the other aspects of recognizing the risen Christ will happen, because God’s Word is not only a beginning but a catalyst. “God’s word is living and effective” (Heb 4:12). It does not return empty, but achieves the end for which it was sent (Is 55:11). Therefore, if we focus on proclaiming God’s Word, we can expect a chain-reaction leading to many people recognizing the risen Christ and living for Him.

This helps us understand why the early Church was preoccupied with spreading God’s Word. “Day after day, both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah” (Acts 5:42). The apostles concentrated “on prayer and the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). “The word of God continued to spread” (Acts 6:7; see also 12:24; 19:20).

Hear, read, live, and share God’s Word daily. Thus you will live the risen life and introduce many others to the risen Christ.

Prayer: Father, may I spread Your Word in good times and in bad (see 2 Tm 4:2).

Promise: "Reform your lives! Turn to God, that your sins may be wiped away! Thus may a season of refreshment be granted you by the Lord." —Acts 3:19-20

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, my Redeemer, Rock, and Refuge!

THE WORD ON RESURRECTION
"Were not our hearts burning inside us as He talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" —Luke 24:32

Before Jesus began His public ministry, He overcame the temptations of Satan by using the Scriptures (Mt 4:4, 7, 10). Jesus began His public ministry by reading the Scriptures and preaching (Lk 4:16ff). Jesus continued His ministry of the Word for three years. Even when Jesus died on the cross, He prayed the Word, quoting from Psalm 22 and Psalm 31 (see Mt 27:46; Lk 23:46). In the afternoon of the day on which He rose from the dead, Jesus walked with two of His disciples for several miles. During this walk, He interpreted many Scriptural passages (Lk 24:27). That evening, Jesus “opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45).

At Pentecost, St. Peter preached on Joel 3, Psalm 16, and Psalm 110 (Acts 2:17ff). After Pentecost, the members of the newborn Church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ instruction,” based on the Scriptures (Acts 2:42). The early Church measured the progress of God’s work in terms of the spread of the Word of God (see Acts 6:7; 12:24; 19:20).

On the fourth day of the Easter octave and the Easter season, let God’s Word burn and purify your hearts (Lk 24:32). Then you will recognize the risen Christ (see Lk 24:31).

Prayer: Father, use this book, One Bread, One Body, to help me meet the risen Christ.

Promise: "I have neither silver nor gold, but what I have I give you! In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, walk!" —Acts 3:6

Praise: Praise the risen Lord! The tomb is empty; the stone is rolled away! Alleluia!

BODY LANGUAGE
"One was seated at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had lain." —John 20:12

When two angels asked St. Mary Magdalene why she was weeping, she responded: “The Lord has been taken away” (Jn 20:13). She meant that the Lord’s body was no longer in His tomb. Mary Magdalene was so preoccupied with Jesus’ body that she seemed not to have paid much attention to the “two angels in dazzling robes” (Jn 20:12). When Jesus, Whom she thought was the gardener, asked Mary why she was weeping, she replied that she would carry Jesus’ body away, if He told her where His body was located (Jn 20:15). Then, when Jesus said Mary’s name, Mary recognized Him and reached out to embrace Jesus.

If we are to meet the risen Christ, we must love Jesus in His glorified Body in heaven, His Body the Church (Eph 5:25), and His Eucharistic Body. Let us recognize the risen Jesus through the ministry of Christ’s Body the Church and through the breaking of bread (Lk 24:30-31), that is, the Body of Christ.

Love the Church. Love the Mass. Love the Body of the risen Christ.

Prayer: Father, before I receive the risen Christ in Holy Communion, may I respond with resounding, deep faith to the words of the priest, "the Body of Christ."

Promise: "You must reform and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, that your sins may be forgiven; then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It was to you and your children that the promise was made." —Acts 2:38-39

Praise: Praise Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist! "O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine!"

THE BIG 4-0
"This is the story that circulates among the Jews to this very day." —Matthew 28:15

The chief priests gave the soldiers who had been stationed at Jesus’ tomb “a large bribe with the instructions: ‘You are to say, “His disciples came during the night and stole Him while we were asleep” ’ ” (Mt 28:12-13). These purchased lies were very effective. St. Matthew comments that these lies circulated among the Jews when he compiled his Gospel — possibly over forty years after Jesus’ Resurrection.

A Jew crippled from birth sat begging at one of the gates of the Temple (Acts 3:2-3). He was over forty years old (Acts 4:22). He had never taken a step in his life. Many of the Jews during Matthew’s time resembled that crippled beggar. For forty years, they had put their faith in lies. As a result, they were paralyzed and prevented from standing up in faith for the risen Christ. Many Christians in our time are like the crippled beggar. For years, even more than forty years, we have been paralyzed and prevented from witnessing for the risen Christ. Each Easter, we talk about Easter eggs, chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chickens, the Final Four in college basketball, the Opening Day of major league baseball, the weather — anything but Jesus.

You don’t have to be spiritually paralyzed. You can stand up for Jesus for the first time or for the first time in a long time. Jesus is risen! You can rise above conformity to the world and be Jesus’ witness (see Rm 12:2).

Prayer: Jesus, raise me and free me to be Your witness now.

Promise: "This is the Jesus God has raised up, and we are His witnesses." —Acts 2:32

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth. All creation gives You glory. Alleluia!

RISEN JESUS, I DO!
"Are you not aware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?" —Romans 6:3

To know the risen Christ in a life-changing, death-conquering way, we must be baptized in His name (Acts 2:38). If we are already baptized, we must renew our Baptisms and live them. In this way, we become aware that we “have been raised up in company with Christ” (Col 3:1). In Baptism, we know the risen Christ.

Therefore, on this first day of the Easter season, at every Mass in the world, the Church calls us to renew our baptismal promises. When we answer “I do” to these questions, we, by God’s grace, are making the greatest commitment we have ever made and the greatest commitment possible for a human being to make. In preparation for this great event, we have been doing penance, giving alms, praying, and fasting for the forty days of Lent.

So today, let us meet the risen Jesus as we make the supreme act of faith in renewing our baptismal promises. Throughout the world, the Church has been doing this for two-thousand years. Millions have met, known, and loved the risen Lord through living their Baptisms. On this Easter Sunday, believe, say “I do,” and live the new life in the risen Lord. Happy Resurrection Day!

Prayer: Father, risen Son, and Holy Spirit, I do believe in You with all my heart.

Promise: "He saw and believed." —Jn 20:8

Praise: "I am...the Morning Star shining bright" (Rv 22:16). Praise the risen Jesus, now and forever. Alleluia!

A DAY WITHOUT JESUS - One Bread, One Body, 04/19/2025

A DAY WITHOUT JESUS
"I had rather one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere." —Psalm 84:11

The first Holy Saturday was a day without Jesus. He was buried in the tomb. Because of the Sabbath, His body could not be anointed (Lk 23:56—24:1) or even visited (Mt 28:1).

Today the Church relives that first Holy Saturday without Jesus. The Blessed Sacrament does not reside in the tabernacle today. There is no Mass during the day. We identify with Jesus buried in the tomb (see Rm 6:3-4).

St. Mary Magdalene spent the first Holy Saturday waiting. She longed for the Sabbath day to end so she could be at Jesus’ tomb. She so loved Jesus that she would rather spend a thousand days at Jesus’ tomb than one day without Him (see Ps 84:11). She even arose before dawn the next day to visit His tomb (Jn 20:1).The Jewish elders, scribes, and chief priests who conspired to hand Jesus over to Pilate probably spent their first day without Jesus doing the same things they did before they met Jesus.

What about you? How is your day without Jesus? Do you miss Him as did Mary Magdalene? What are you waiting anxiously for today: the chance to finally be with the Eucharistic Jesus tonight at the Easter Vigil liturgy, or the chance to finally eat the sweets you had been without for forty days? Is forty days without pleasures harder for you to endure than one day without Jesus? Are you hungry to go back to the life you had before Lent, or are you hungry to receive the new dimension of risen life Jesus wants to give you? (Jn 10:10)

Prayer: Jesus, apart from You, I can do nothing (Jn 15:5). You are my entire life (Phil 1:21).

Promise: (none)

Praise: (none)

HE DIED FOR ME
He was "smitten for the sin of His people." —Isaiah 53:8

Jesus died for my sins, I who consider myself among the worst of sinners (see 1 Tm 1:15). He was pierced for my offenses, crushed for my sins (Is 53:5). In the face of such sacrificial, redeeming, committed, unconditional love, I have sometimes reacted selfishly and sinfully toward the One Who gave His life for me, instead of responding to His unconditional love with trusting abandon.

Yet instead of abandoning me when I turned my back on Him, Jesus proved His love by letting His face shine on me and saving me (Ps 31:17). Jesus died for me while I was still a sinner (Rm 5:8), before I repented. He came to earth and sympathized with my weaknesses, so I could feel confident in approaching Him for forgiveness (Heb 4:16). Jesus saved me (Ti 3:5).

No wonder the Church calls today “Good Friday.” What good news for sinners like me, that Jesus died to save all, you and me! “Into Your hands I commend my spirit” (Ps 31:6).

Prayer: Jesus, nail me to the cross with You so that I can never turn away from You again.

Promise: "He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." —Heb 5:9

Praise: (none)

SPY WEDNESDAY
"From that time on [Judas] kept looking for an opportunity to hand [Jesus] over." —Matthew 26:16

St. Paul mentioned those who worm their way into Christian circles to “spy” on the freedom the disciples enjoyed in Christ (Gal 2:4). Judas Iscariot, “one of the Twelve” apostles (Mk 14:10), is the spy for which Spy Wednesday was named. Yet Jesus is likewise operating behind enemy lines this week. Jesus came “to destroy the devil’s works” (1 Jn 3:8). He gave His life by allowing Himself to be captured by the enemy. His true identity was revealed: “the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One” (Mk 14:61). Then all the torments of the enemy were unleashed upon Him.

Satan thought he had won — as Jesus was “crucified, died, and was buried” (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1085; see also the Apostles’ Creed). Then Jesus triumphed over death, and the enemy’s apparent victory was destroyed. The kingdom of darkness was defeated; Jesus and the kingdom of God triumphed. Jesus reclaimed what Satan stole from God’s Kingdom (see Col 2:14-15). By dying Jesus destroyed our death; by rising He restored our life (see Rm 6:4).

“What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” Judas asked (Mt 26:15). Judas handed Jesus over to the enemy. Yet Jesus was not the victim of a spy. Jesus freely handed Himself over for our salvation (see Jn 10:17-18). During Holy Week, we are called to hand ourselves over to the Lord Jesus. If we don’t hand ourselves over to Him, we may hand Jesus over to those who scorn Him. Hand your life over to the Lord.

Prayer: Father, Your loyalty and love are always with me (Ps 89:25). Give me the grace to be loyal to You even to death.

Promise: "The Lord God is my Help, therefore I am not disgraced." —Is 50:7

A LIFE OF EUCHARISTIC LOVE
"This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me." —1 Corinthians 11:24

Through this book, One Bread, One Body, we encourage you to go to Mass and receive Holy Communion daily or as often as possible. By these teachings on the daily Eucharistic readings, we hope to lead you not only to go to Mass but to live the Mass in your everyday life. We want to help send into the world millions of walking tabernacles who will be light and salt (Mt 5:13-14) to permeate even our culture of death with the Gospel of Jesus Christ (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 899).

Therefore, put daily Mass “at the head” of your schedule (see Ex 12:2). Make it your top priority. Even if you have been betrayed (see 1 Cor 11:23) and sinned against, don’t let the devil rob you of your joy, the Eucharist. By God’s grace, forgive and be reconciled (see Mt 5:23-24). As you receive the Body and Blood of Jesus, “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God” (Rm 12:1). Make any sacrifices necessary to receive the Eucharistic Jesus daily. Some Christians throughout the world are even martyred for their Eucharistic love. Finally, worship the Eucharistic Jesus in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and by washing Jesus’ feet and serving Him in the least of the brethren in Christian community (see Jn 13:5; Mt 25:40).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me (Rm 8:26) to pray the Mass always (see Lk 18:1).

Promise: "This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the Lord, as a perpetual institution." —Ex 12:14

Praise: "O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine."

THE GORY IN GLORY
"Jesus," reclining, "grew deeply troubled." —John 13:21

During Holy Week, we recall a week of extreme suffering, pain, and trauma for Jesus. As we reflect on Jesus’ sufferings, we too may be having an extremely difficult week. As we look at our lives, we may feel we have “toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent” our strength (Is 49:4). Like Jesus, we may grow “deeply troubled” (Jn 13:21). We are tempted to let Satan enter our hearts (see Jn 13:27), or we are brokenhearted because others have let Satan enter their hearts. Spiritually speaking, we may be going through the night (see Jn 13:30) of spiritual warfare where the prince of darkness (see Eph 6:12) seems to be reigning.

When Jesus suffered all this distress and Judas had left to betray Him (Jn 13:31), Jesus did not cower in fear or have a pity party. Rather, He proclaimed: “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in Him. [If God has been glorified in Him,] God will, in turn, glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him soon” (Jn 13:31-32). In the deeper holiness which we are receiving this Holy Week, let us proclaim with Jesus that, especially in the midst of terrible suffering, God the Father will be glorified through our lives. “In His temple all say, ‘Glory!’ ” (Ps 29:9)

Prayer: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."

Promise: "I will make you a light to the nations, that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth." —Is 49:6

UNSPARINGLY GENEROUS
"Mary brought a pound of costly perfume." —John 12:3

St. Mary of Bethany was unsparingly generous, bringing Jesus a gift worth nearly a year’s wages (see Jn 12:3, 5). The Magi, offering gold, frankincense, and myrrh, were unsparingly generous (Mt 2:11). Judas was the opposite. He did not give money to Jesus; he got money by selling Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Mt 26:15). Additionally, Judas kept the money he stole from the common purse (Jn 12:6). Jesus had earlier warned: “You cannot give yourself to God and money” (Mt 6:24). Judas chose money as his master and betrayed Jesus as a result of his choice.

Judas correctly knew the value of Mary’s perfume. Sadly, in his worldly wisdom, Judas did not know the value of Jesus, nor the value of unsparing generosity. This cannot be calculated from an earthly viewpoint; it requires a spiritual mindset (1 Cor 2:14-15).

Sin by sin, our minds are blinded to God’s love (2 Cor 4:4). Our attraction to money and the things of this world (mammon) has serious consequences (see 1 Tm 6:9-10). Today, repent of all love for the world, which makes us enemies of the cross of Jesus (Phil 3:18-19).

Jesus was unsparingly generous in dying for us, in giving His blood for us. He did not calculate the cost for our salvation. In return, be unsparingly generous to Jesus today. Generously give Him your entire life.

Prayer: Jesus, You gave Your life for me. I give my life for You.

Promise: "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living." —Ps 27:13

Praise: At a healing service, the Lord healed Rachel of the infirmity which confined her to a wheelchair.

LIVING STONES
"I tell you the very stones would cry out." —Luke 19:40

The hard stones on the path to Jerusalem were ready to praise Jesus as King of Glory (Lk 19:40). Even the hard stones of the tomb embraced, sheltered and protected the dead body of Jesus. Sadly, those who opposed Jesus had hearts as hard as the stone-cold tomb. Jesus desired so much to transform hardened human hearts that He became a man to reveal the Father’s love and die so that we might have the chance for eternal  life.

Will we have stony hearts? (Ez 36:26) Will we be stony ground (see Mk 4:5) and cry out,  “Crucify Jesus” (see Lk 23:21)? Or will we be “living stones” to build the Church, the Kingdom of God? (1 Pt 2:5) The Church is built on St. Peter, the Rock (Mt 16:18). If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts as hard as stones (Ps 95:8).

To soften our stony hearts, Jesus allowed His body to be pierced. He eagerly desired to share the Passover, the Mass, with us (Lk 22:15). He loves us unto death (Jn 13:1ff). God can raise up children of Abraham from the stones (Lk 3:8). Let’s not allow the stones to out-praise us. Let the Lord change you from rock-hard to a living stone. Cry out in praise, Hosanna!

Prayer: Father, soften my stony heart to be like clay in Your hands of love (Jer 18:6).

Promise: "The Lord God is My help, therefore I am not disgraced." —Is 50:7

Praise: "Blessed is He Who comes as King in the name of the Lord!" (Lk 19:38)

THE MAGNET OF UNITY
"He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together." —Jeremiah 31:10

Jesus died on the cross “to gather into one all the dispersed children of God” (Jn 11:52). He is praying that we be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Jesus makes us one by His being lifted up on the cross, in the Resurrection and the Ascension, to the right hand of the Father. Then He draws us to Himself, as He promised: “I — once I am lifted up from earth — will draw all men to Myself” (Jn 12:32). As we draw closer to Jesus, we draw closer to each other. As we converge on Jesus, we are united with each other. For example, to be more closely united with your spouse, you need to draw closer to Jesus and to pray that your spouse does the same.

Tomorrow we begin Holy Week. We focus on Jesus lifted up on the cross. Then, in the Easter season, we see Jesus lifted up in His Resurrection, Ascension, and glorification. The lifted-up Jesus is drawing us powerfully to Himself and thereby to each other. The lifted-up Jesus is the Magnet of unity. Let us pray: “Draw me!” (Sg 1:4)

Prayer: Father, I have been baptized in one Spirit into the one Body of Christ (1 Cor 12:13). Prepare me to renew my baptismal promises in a world-changing way this Easter.

Promise: "I will make them one nation upon the land, in the mountains of Israel, and there shall be one prince for them all." —Ez 37:22

Praise: George reconciled with his family and with God.
