STARE OR SHARE?
"Why do you stand here looking up at the skies?" —Acts 1:11

After Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles stared so long into the sky that “two men dressed in white,” presumably angels, addressed them, saying, “Men of Galilee…why do you stand here looking up at the skies?” (Acts 1:10-11)  We modern-day people likewise spend a lot of time staring and standing around. We stare at the TV and our handheld electronic devices. We “people-watch.”

If we must stare, let’s stare like this:

  • stare at the Scriptures, reading them daily (Acts 17:11),
  • stare upon the face of the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration (see Ps 27:4), and
  • stare at our loved ones with gratitude.

We need someone to rouse us to go out into the world and proclaim that since Jesus is risen and ascended, we have been given the promise of the Father (see Lk 24:49).

Now that Jesus has ascended, the Holy Spirit has descended with many gifts to help us live fruitful lives of evangelization (Eph 4:10-11). Be “witnesses” of the Good News of “penance for the remission of sins” (Lk 24:47-48). Give glory to Jesus for opening the way to heaven for us all (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 666-667).

Prayer: Ascended Jesus, thank You for interceding for me from heaven (1 Jn 2:1). Give me the grace to share the Good News with everyone I meet.

Promise: "See, I send down upon you the promise of My Father." —Lk 24:49

Praise: Jesus "was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit; seen by the angels; preached among the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up into glory" (1 Tm 3:16). Alleluia!

SILENT PRAYER
"Thereupon Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah." —Luke 1:39

The silence at the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth must have been deafening and deadening. The elderly Elizabeth was carrying her first child. Her husband had been struck mute ever since the child was conceived. He had not said a word for six months. Elizabeth asked the Lord for His help.

The Lord sent Mary as the answer to Elizabeth’s silent prayer. “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out in a loud voice” (Lk 1:41-42). The silence was broken. Elizabeth prophesied (Lk 1:42); Mary sang God’s praises and proclaimed “the greatness of the Lord” (Lk 1:46). They shouted for joy, sang joyfully, and exulted with all their hearts (Zep 3:14). Three months later, at the baby’s circumcision, even Zechariah joined the chorus. “His mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God” (Lk 1:64).

When Mary makes a visit, “all heaven breaks loose.” The silence gives way to shouts of praise. Ask Mary to visit you today.

Prayer: Jesus, send Your mother Mary to mother me and lift me from discouragement and sadness to joy and praise.

Promise: "He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals." —Zep 3:17-18

Praise: Miranda was nervous about establishing a relationship with the Blessed Mother. She prayed the rosary a little each day and soon found herself swept away in a special sense of peace.

UNMANIPULATED AND GRACED
"Many of the Corinthians, too, who heard Paul believed and were baptized." —Acts 18:8

In part of the world, the Church celebrates today the Ascension of Jesus. In other parts of the world, the Ascension is celebrated on Sunday. Either way, the Lord wants today to be a special day for you.

The Lord wants to lavish His grace and love on you, while Satan wants to rob, enslave, and manipulate you (see Jn 10:10). If you stay in God’s will today and refuse to be pushed around or even budged by Satan’s manipulating pressures, then you will receive what the Lord has planned for you today; a plan from even before the world was created (see Eph 1:4; 2:10). For example, the Lord had great things planned for St. Paul at Corinth. Paul would lead many Corinthians to the Lord, and the church in Corinth would be filled with every charism from the Lord (see 1 Cor 1:7). However, Paul came to Corinth “in weakness and fear, and with much trepidation” (1 Cor 2:3). He’d had a bad experience at Athens (see Acts 17:32-34) and realized how dangerous it was to be in Corinth because of its unchecked violence (see Acts 18:17). Paul was pressured by failure, frustration, fatigue, and fear, but he did not let himself be manipulated. Then the Lord’s bountiful blessings poured out on him.

In God’s will is abundant life. Don’t be manipulated by any pressure to move out of God’s will.

Prayer: Father, may I hold my ground (see Eph 6:13).

Promise: "I tell you truly: you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices; you will grieve for a time, but your grief will be turned into joy." —Jn 16:20

Praise: Pope St. Paul VI was the first pope to make extensive papal visits to other countries outside of Italy, making apostolic journeys to seventeen different nations.

NINE DAYS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
"Whatever you ask the Father, He will give you in My name." —John 16:23

Today we begin the Pentecost novena, nine days of prayer in preparation for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. On this first day of the novena, Jesus tells us to ask for the Spirit in His name (Jn 16:23). Jesus says: “The heavenly Father [will] give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Lk 11:13).

We need these nine days to prepare us to ask rightly (see Jas 4:2-3). “We will receive at His hands whatever we ask” provided that “our consciences have nothing to charge us with” (1 Jn 3:22, 21). Thus, the Lord wants us to focus on repentance during this novena.

The disciples who prayed the first Pentecost novena “devoted themselves to constant prayer” (Acts 1:14). Prayer that is constant and communal works! They were filled with the Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Find some people to gather with to pray the novena.

Mary, Mother of the Church, was central to the first Pentecost novena (Acts 1:14). Imagine how guilty the first disciples felt in abandoning Jesus during His crucifixion and thus adding to His pain. If you went to the funeral of someone you had hurt badly, imagine how comforted you’d feel to be loved and forgiven by the family of the deceased. Mary was Jesus’ mother. Her presence with the disciples during the novena meant forgiveness and unity (see Acts 1:14).

Repent and go to Confession. Pray with others. Pray with Mary. “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Father, I ask You in Jesus' name to prepare my heart to be a worthy dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "The Lord said to Paul: 'Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced, for I am with you.' " —Acts 18:9-10

Praise: In the past several decades, Sandra has helped lead hundreds of youth and adults to a deeper intimacy with the Holy Spirit through her involvement in numerous Life in the Spirit seminars.

ARE YOU HARVESTING WITH A BASKET OR A COMBINE?
"When they heard about the raising of the dead, some sneered, while others said, 'We must hear you on this topic some other time.' " —Acts 17:32

We Christians in the Western world in this millennium can likely relate to St. Paul’s ministry in Athens probably better than we can relate to other events in Acts of the Apostles. Paul met the people where they were and received a lukewarm response to his presentation of the Gospel, although he did convert a few people (Acts 17:34). We too are used to lukewarmness and meager results, as we attempt to be relevant to the world.

In contrast, Paul in Thessalonica converted some Jews, “a great number of Greeks sympathetic to Judaism, and numerous prominent women” (Acts 17:4). In Beroea, “many of them came to believe” (Acts 17:12). Jesus told Paul that there were many of His people in Corinth (Acts 18:10). In two years, “all the inhabitants of the province of Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord” (Acts 19:10).

Paul was used to reaping great harvests. Why was his harvest so poor in Athens? Some theories are that, in Athens, Paul did not get around to preaching Christ crucified (see 1 Cor 2:2), did not use the Bible in his preaching, and was doing his ministry alone rather than in community (see Acts 17:16; 2 Cor 2:12-13).

Possibly we can learn from Paul in Athens. In so doing, we can reap the great harvests of Acts of the Apostles and not only the poor ones.

Prayer: Father, may I bear fruit abundantly and more abundantly (see Jn 15:2, 5).

Promise: "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. When He comes, however, being the Spirit of truth He will guide you to all truth." —Jn 16:12-13

Praise: At a healing service, Jesus healed Rhonda of multiple sclerosis.

Phil Robertson, 'Duck Dynasty' Patriarch and Outdoor Icon, Dies at 79

United States – May 27, 2025 – Phil Robertson, the beloved patriarch of the "Duck Dynasty" family, founder of Duck Commander, and an outspoken voice for faith and family, passed away peacefully at the age of 79. The news of his passing was announced by his family, marking the end of a remarkable life that transformed a humble duck call business into a global phenomenon and etched his unique persona into the fabric of American culture.

Robertson had been battling Alzheimer's disease, a condition his son, Jase Robertson, publicly discussed in December 2024, noting his father's struggles. The family shared a statement on social media, including Korie Robertson, wife of Willie Robertson, expressing their profound love and gratitude for his life. "We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord," the statement read, emphasizing his bold faith and desire to share the Gospel. While a private service for the immediate family will be held, plans for a public celebration of his life will be shared in due course, allowing the many admirers he impacted to pay their respects.

Born on April 24, 1946, in Vivian, Louisiana, Phil Robertson's early life was defined by the rugged beauty of the Sportsman's Paradise. He grew up hunting and fishing, a passion that would later shape his destiny. A talented athlete, Robertson earned a football scholarship to Louisiana Tech University, where he played quarterback. However, his true calling lay in the wilderness and the ingenious craft of creating duck calls. Disenchanted with the quality of existing calls, he meticulously designed and patented his own in 1972, meticulously replicating the precise sounds of a duck. This innovation marked the genesis of Duck Commander, a company he officially incorporated in 1973. From his modest home in West Monroe, Louisiana, which served as the initial factory, Phil and his wife, Kay Robertson, along with their children, began building what would become a multi-million-dollar enterprise.

The world was introduced to Phil Robertson and his distinctive family through the A&E reality television series Duck Dynasty, which premiered in 2012. The show followed the exploits of the close-knit Robertson clan, with Phil at its helm, showcasing their daily lives, their thriving business, and their unwavering adherence to traditional values and Christian faith. The series resonated with millions, achieving unprecedented viewership for a non-fiction cable program, and catapulting Phil and his family into national stardom. His signature long beard, deep voice, and often unconventional wisdom became instantly recognizable, turning him into an accidental icon.

Phil Robertson was as well-known for his deeply held conservative and Christian beliefs as he was for his duck calls. He consistently used his platform to share his faith and express his views on social issues, a stance that occasionally generated significant public discussion. A notable instance occurred in 2013 following remarks made during a GQ interview concerning homosexuality, which led to a temporary suspension from A&E. Despite the network's initial decision, a wave of public support from fans and prominent figures, including Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz, saw his reinstatement, reaffirming the strong connection he had forged with a segment of the American public. His family, while acknowledging his sometimes "coarse" language, stood by his biblical interpretations, emphasizing his character as a godly man.

His influence extended beyond television. Phil Robertson continued to be a prolific author and speaker on the Christian circuit, sharing his personal testimony and philosophy. His books, such as "Happy, Happy, Happy" and "UnPHILtered," offered further insights into his perspectives on life and liberty. More recently, his early life and conversion story were depicted in "The Blind," a 2023 film that further illuminated the transformative power of faith in his life, gaining widespread acclaim within Christian circles. He also continued to share his thoughts through the family's podcast, "Unashamed with the Robertson Family," where his health struggles were candidly addressed by his sons.

The legacy of Phil Robertson is multifaceted. He revolutionized the hunting industry with his innovative duck calls and built a family business that extended to other ventures like Buck Commander and Fin Commander. More profoundly, he cultivated a unique brand of rural masculinity and conservative Christianity that resonated powerfully with a vast audience. His bold faith and unwavering commitment to his principles, even in the face of controversy, left an indelible mark.

The Robertson family, including his wife Kay, sons Willie and Jase, and granddaughter Sadie Robertson, among others, has received an outpouring of support from around the world. Their statements reflect a deep faith and a commitment to continuing Phil's legacy of love for God and others. As the family prepares for a private farewell, the wider community awaits details for a public celebration, a gathering that will undoubtedly commemorate a life lived with conviction and an impact that reached far beyond the Louisiana swamps.

News outlets around the nation have reported on Phil Robertson's passing, reflecting the wide reach of his influence.

For those interested in the legacy of Phil Robertson and Duck Commander, products related to their iconic brand are widely available. These items allow fans to connect with the passion for the outdoors that Phil championed.

Phil Robertson's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family and countless fans. His life story, from humble beginnings to reality television stardom, through faith and conviction, serves as a powerful narrative of American independence and a commitment to deeply held values. He will be remembered not only as the "Duck Commander" but as a man who lived authentically and inspired many to embrace their beliefs.

THE BIG PICTURE
"When He comes, He will prove the world wrong." —John 16:8

God created the universe. He holds the whole wide world in His hands. God is big. He has big plans. He wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4). He commands us to make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19). He calls us to live with Him in heaven forever.

Each human being is very small. Each of us is like a microscopic dot on a microscopic planet. Our lives last less than a second in comparison with eternity.

The Holy Spirit, God, comes to us to change our vision. Despite our fleeting littleness, we will no longer have peep-hole, tunnel vision, but catholic, universal, heavenly vision. We will set our hearts “on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God’s right hand” (Col 3:1). We will “be intent on things above rather than on things of earth” (Col 3:2).

The Holy Spirit will open our eyes to see that sin means much more than just breaking the law. Sin is a refusal to believe in Jesus (Jn 16:9). The Holy Spirit shows us that justice is not only Jesus’ death on Calvary but also His enthronement in heaven (see Jn 16:10). Finally, the Holy Spirit reveals to us an invisible world of “principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits in regions above” (Eph 6:12). The Spirit reveals that “the prince of this world has been condemned” (Jn 16:11).

In the Holy Spirit, open your eyes and see the big picture. See the universal Church, the whole world, several billion people, heaven, and hell. In the Holy Spirit, do not be imprisoned in the present but look into the mystery of timeless eternity.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit of truth and light. May I see as You see (see Nm 24:4).

Promise: "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, and all your household." —Acts 16:31

Praise: St. Augustine of Canterbury converted many in England to Jesus by working miraculous signs and wonders in the name of Jesus.

LYDIA
"The Lord opened [Lydia's] heart to accept what Paul was saying." —Acts 16:14

St. Lydia was a dealer in purple goods (Acts 16:14). In that day, purple cloth was an expensive item sought by the wealthy. Thus, Lydia was a woman of some means, as she owned a house, dealt with the wealthy, and knew how to operate in the circles of the elite.

Lydia was also extraordinarily persuasive. She must have been a great saleswoman, and she “managed to prevail on” St. Paul (Acts 16:15). It was not easy to prevail upon Paul, as he stood firm against most entreaties. However, Lydia played the trump card, saying: “If you believe that my conversion is sincere, stay at my home” (see Acts 16:15). It would almost be an insult to Lydia’s conversion for Paul to have refused her offer of hospitality.

Lydia was a worshiper of God. Her heart was open, and when she heard the Gospel message, God opened it further as she cooperated with His grace (Acts 16:14) and embraced Jesus as her Lord.

It seems that the church at Philippi continued to use Lydia’s home as a meeting place after St. Paul left town. Only the church at Philippi sent Paul monetary support (Phil 4:15). Could those donations to his ministry have come about through Lydia’s encouragement and persuasion? (see Acts 16:40)

Be a Lydia. Open your heart and home to the Lord Jesus.

Prayer: Father, all I have is Yours. Use me and use me up.

Promise: "I have told you all this to keep your faith from being shaken." —Jn 16:1

Praise: St. Philip Neri often spoke about Jesus to people on street corners in Rome. One time thirty young men came to ridicule him. Jesus touched their hearts through Philip and they were all converted to faith.

DESPERATELY NEEDING THE SPIRIT?
"Do not be distressed or fearful." —John 14:27

When Jesus told His disciples not to be distressed, they didn’t realize they would soon be very distressed. Likewise, when Jesus tells us not to be distressed in today’s Gospel reading (Jn 14:27), we may not realize that this is to be taken personally and immediately. We think that this message is not specifically for us and is generally intended for everybody. Moreover, we may think that things are going well in our lives, and therefore we don’t expect any immediate distress. However, the disciples were unaware that they were on the threshold of the most distressful time of their lives. We might be mistaken as well. Although we may not know it, we may desperately need the Holy Spirit’s help (see Jn 14:26).

Assume that two weeks from today you will need to receive a new Pentecost or else be overwhelmed by distress. Whether or not this happens, the wisest thing is to be ready for anything by being filled with the Holy Spirit. May you desire a new Pentecost more than you want anything else. Jesus has promised: “This much have I told you while I was still with you; the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you” (Jn 14:25-26). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, may I want the Holy Spirit in fullness more than I want to breathe. Renew my Baptism and Confirmation.

Promise: "It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too, not to lay on you any burden beyond that which is strictly necessary." —Acts 15:28

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) Alleluia forever!

THE CONTRARY SPIRIT
"They had been prevented by the Holy Spirit from preaching the message in the province of Asia. When they came to Mysia they tried to go on into Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them." —Acts 16:6-7

Six days from today, the Church begins the Pentecost novena. In this way, we prepare our hearts and open them to the Holy Spirit. Although the Holy Spirit is our Joy, our Hope, and the Desire of our hearts, the Spirit, being God, has ways and thoughts that are very different from ours (Is 55:8-9). Therefore, we naturally are resistant to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit proves the world wrong about sin, justice, and condemnation (Jn 16:8). The Spirit insists that we constantly realize that Jesus has chosen us out of the world and that therefore we don’t belong to the world (Jn 15:19). The Spirit will convict us as “enemies of the cross” if we are set on the things of the world (Phil 3:18-19).

Because the Spirit is all-knowing and we are not, the Spirit repeatedly must restrict us from going to certain places and doing certain things (Acts 16:7). This is frustrating for us because we feel the Spirit is treating us like children. Yet the fact is that in many ways we are and will always be like children due to our human weaknesses and limitations.

To receive the Holy Spirit, we must choose to be crucified to the world and the world to us (Gal 6:14). To receive the Holy Spirit in a deeper way, we must be humble and painfully realistic. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I decide to humble myself before You.

Promise: "Through all this, the congregations grew stronger in faith and daily increased in numbers." —Acts 16:5

Praise: Mariano, a Catholic businessman, witnesses to every customer with whom he deals. His secret of evangelization: "I listen attentively to them and am interested in what is going on in their lives. Soon, when they return the favor, I tell them what Jesus is doing in my life."

HOW TO BE DELIGHT-FUL - One Bread, One Body, 05/23/2025

HOW TO BE DELIGHT-FUL
"When it was read there was great delight at the encouragement it gave." —Acts 15:31

The leaders of the early Church sent a letter to the Gentile Christians of Antioch. The leaders told them that the Holy Spirit and the Church’s leaders had decided that the Gentile Christians were “to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from illicit sexual union” (Acts 15:29). When the letter “was read there was great delight at the encouragement it gave” (Acts 15:31). Were the Gentile Christians greatly delighted and encouraged because the commands expressed in this letter were easy to accept? Probably not, for we know that some Gentile Christians had great difficulty with the first and last commands of this letter (see Rm 14:13ff; 1 Cor 8:1ff; 1 Thes 4:3ff).

The Gentile Christians rejoiced and were encouraged not because they got their way or an easy way, but because they were docile to the Holy Spirit and expressed this by their submission to the authority of the Church’s leaders. The Gentile Christians of Antioch rejoiced because they were unselfish (see Phil 4:4-5). They delighted in obeying the law of the Lord (Ps 40:9), as it was revealed by the Holy Spirit through the leaders of the Church.

True delight and encouragement are based not on getting our way but on finding out God’s will. Like Jesus, we derive our food, fulfillment, and joy from doing the will of God the Father  (Jn 4:34).

We can’t always get what we want, but by grace we can always do God’s will. Therefore, delight and encouragement are always available to us. Seek God’s will. Submit to authority (Heb 13:17; Rm 13:1ff). Be delighted and encouraged always.

Prayer: Father, may I be Your delight (Ps 149:4, RNAB).

Promise: "The command I give you is this, that you love one another." —Jn 15:17

Praise: Since submitting to the Church's teaching completely, Martha's confusion and anger are gone.

YOUR PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - One Bread, One Body, 05/22/2025

YOUR PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
"Announce His salvation, day after day." —Psalm 96:2

The priest has three options in proclaiming the dismissal at the end of Mass. One option is: “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.” To be able to effectively announce the Gospel of the Lord, we must:

  • remain in His love (see Jn 15:9),
  • realize that Jesus loves us as the Father loves Him (Jn 15:9),
  • be constantly aware that we are saved by the favor of the Lord Jesus (Acts 15:11), and
  • know that our joy is complete if the very joy of Jesus is in us (Jn 15:11).

The word announce means to make known publicly or officially; to proclaim; to give notice of. In the world of sports broadcasting, each sporting event has an announcer who tells us what is happening in the game. Likewise, one who announces the Gospel of the Lord doesn’t need to make anything up. The announcer simply relates what has happened: God has sent Jesus as our Savior.

The third Luminous mystery of the Rosary is entitled The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and the Call to Repentance. Like the apostles in that Luminous mystery, we are called to be announcers of “His salvation, day after day” (Ps 96:2). Like St. John the Baptizer, we are to “go before the Lord…giving His people a knowledge of salvation in freedom from their sins” (Lk 1:76-77). Repent of any failure to announce the salvation of God.

Prayer: Lord, open my lips and my mouth will announce Your salvation (see Ps 51:17).

Promise: "You will live in My love if you keep My commandments." —Jn 15:10

Praise: St. Rita's constant prayer for her contentious husband bore fruit as he repented of his sins on his deathbed.

New Movement Empowers Cyclists and Motorcyclists to Personalize Their Journeys Through Custom Canvas Panniers

United States – May 21, 2025 – A rising wave of enthusiasm is sweeping through the cycling and motorcycling communities, as more riders embrace the art of sewing custom canvas bicycle or motorcycle panniers. This burgeoning movement allows adventurers, commuters, and tourers to craft personalized, highly functional luggage tailored precisely to their needs and individual style. Beyond the commercial options, riders are discovering the enduring satisfaction and superior utility of bespoke panniers, built with their own hands and designed for their unique travels.

The concept of custom-made gear for two-wheeled transport is gaining momentum, fueled by a desire for durabilitywaterproofing, and a perfect fit that off-the-shelf solutions often cannot provide. Enthusiasts are finding that the act of designing and constructing their own bicycle panniers or motorcycle panniers transforms their approach to travel, offering solutions optimized for specific bicycles, racks, and cargo requirements. This growing trend reflects a broader appreciation for craftsmanship and self-sufficiency within the riding community.

At the heart of this movement is the versatile and robust material: canvas. Known for its strength, timeless aesthetic, and ability to be treated for enhanced waterproofingcanvas offers an ideal medium for creating luggage that can withstand the rigors of the road and trail. Whether it is a rugged waxed canvas for classic touring bikes or a durable duck canvas for daily commutes, the choice of fabric allows for tailoring the panniers to the specific demands of each adventure. This material choice allows for an alignment with both the practical demands of transport and the aesthetic desires of the rider.

The process of creating these custom bags typically involves a dedicated sewing machine, often a heavy-duty or industrial model capable of handling multiple layers of thick fabric and strong threads. Crafting personalized patterns is a foundational step, allowing for precise control over the panniers' dimensions, internal organization, and external features such as pockets and closures. Many resources are now available, from online tutorials to dedicated workshops, guiding individuals through the DIY process, empowering them to transform rolls of canvas into essential travel companions. The rise of interest in this custom work emphasizes the increasing appreciation for designing gear that functions as an extension of the vehicle and the individual.

The construction of custom panniers also necessitates careful consideration of mounting systems. For bicycle setups, this involves integrating robust hooks and straps that securely attach to existing racks, ensuring stability and preventing interference with pedal stroke. For motorcycle applications, the rack and attachment points are even more critical, often requiring specialized hardware to account for exhaust heat, vibration, and higher speeds. The attention to detail in stitching and reinforcement is paramount, as these bags are subjected to significant stresses during touring or bikepacking expeditions.

This shift towards personalized gear speaks to the core needs of cyclists and motorcyclists who seek luggage that is not just functional, but also a reflection of their riding philosophy. Custom canvas panniers represent a fusion of utility and personal expression, ensuring that every piece of gear contributes to a cohesive and efficient journey. The freedom to select specific materials, dictate dimensions, and integrate unique features positions custom-made panniers as a superior alternative for those unwilling to compromise on their travel requirements.

The online sphere has become a nexus for this movement, with forums, blogs, and video platforms sharing knowledge, designs, and experiences. Individuals interested in exploring this avenue can find numerous resources to begin. Basic "bicycle pannier sewing pattern" searches on marketplaces like Etsy yield a variety of templates, often with recent reviews, indicating ongoing engagement. The availability of diverse materials online and at specialty fabric stores also supports this growing community, making it easier than ever to source a Heavy Duty Sewing Machinehigh-quality canvas, thread, and robust hooks for mounting.

The movement for sewing custom canvas bicycle or motorcycle panniers is more than just a hobby; it is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of riders who prefer to create their own solutions. It empowers individuals to develop luggage that not only performs flawlessly but also carries the unique signature of its maker, making every journey truly personal. As riders continue to seek tailored solutions for their long-distance travel and daily needs, the craft of custom pannier sewing is set to expand its influence, solidifying its place as a significant aspect of modern two-wheeled adventuring.

BEAR THE MOST ABUNDANT FRUIT
"He who lives in Me and I in him, will produce abundantly." —John 15:5

We must bear fruit:

  • the fruit of holiness and evangelization,
  • or be “like a withered, rejected branch, picked up to be thrown in the fire and burnt” (Jn 15:6; also 15:2),
  • and be trimmed to increase our yield (Jn 15:2),
  • by being attached to Jesus, the Vine (Jn 15:4-5),
  • abundantly (Jn 15:5),
  • and thereby glorify God the Father (Jn 15:8),
  • and become Jesus’ disciples (Jn 15:8),
  • for Jesus chose us “to go forth and bear fruit” (Jn 15:16),
  • which endures (Jn 15:16).

Because of His perfect love for us, Jesus wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4). We must bear fruit abundantly. Otherwise, Jesus’ death and Resurrection will be in vain for many people. Because God is Love (1 Jn 4:16), He must insist that we bear fruit as abundantly as possible. If we live in Jesus and He in us, we will automatically bear fruit. We must bear fruit.

Prayer: Father, prune me as much as is necessary for me to bear as much fruit as possible.

Promise: "The church saw them off and they made their way through Phoenicia and Samaria, telling everyone about the conversion of the Gentiles as they went. Their story caused great joy." —Acts 15:3

Praise: St. Christopher shouted during his martyrdom: "I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death."

FIGHTING OVER THE WILL
" 'Peace' is My farewell to you, My peace is My gift to you." —John 14:27

In Jesus’ last will and testament, He left His disciples the gift of shalom-peace. This means He left us a godly order and harmony in our lives. Jesus’ Church is the executor of His will in that He has given it the responsibility of spelling out the details of shalom-peace. If we accept our inheritance from the Lord and listen to His Church, we will have a peace, joy, and freedom which will last forever (see Rm 8:17).

However, Satan tries to convince us that what we have inherited from Jesus is not very good or that we should not trust the Lord and His Church in the execution of His will. Satan wants us to contest the will. For example, some Christians think that by contraception they can better order their marital sexual relations. Each day it becomes clearer that these Christians are wrong and have instead brought destructive disorder into their marriages, families, lives, and society. Others, in their insecurity, have rejected the shalom-peace from tithing, almsgiving, and stewardship. They too have shown that the Lord was right again about shalom-peace, life, and happiness.

The shalom-peace the Lord has left us in His will is such a great and all-encompassing gift that it is more than we can comprehend. Therefore, we must humbly and carefully follow the Lord’s directions through His Church. Otherwise, we will deprive ourselves of everlasting blessings, life, and love. Don’t contest the will; rather, enter the mystery of God (see Ti 2:12).

Prayer: Father, make me a shalom-maker no matter what I must suffer (see Mt 5:9).

Promise: "They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the town, leaving him there for dead. His disciples quickly formed a circle about him, and before long he got up." —Acts 14:19-20

Praise: St. Bernardine of Siena helped reform the Franciscans by his preaching on penance and conversion. He was well known for propagating devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

THE DOCILE WILL INHERIT THE EARTH (see Mt 5:5)
"The Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in everything." —John 14:26

As Jesus is a Paraclete and Teacher (see Jn 20:16), so the Holy Spirit is “another Paraclete” (Jn 14:16) and another Teacher (Jn 14:26). The right attitude to have towards a teacher is to be teachable, that is, docile. Pope St. John Paul II taught that the Holy Spirit is “received by the humble and docile heart of the believer” (Splendor of the Truth, 108). He prophesied that we would have a “new springtime of Christian life,” if we “are docile to the action of the Holy Spirit” (Toward the Third Millennium, 18).

In this same letter, Pope St. John Paul II described Mary as “the woman who was docile to the voice of the Spirit” (48). She was docile because she was a woman of silence, attentiveness, and hope (48). To be docile, we must be quiet, minimize distractions, and hope that what the Spirit is teaching us will renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).

In this month of Mary, ask your Blessed Mother’s intercession so that you will let it be done to you according to God’s Word (Lk 1:38). Be docile; know the truth; change the world.

Prayer: Father, as my pride gives way to docility, so may this culture of death give way to a civilization of love and life.

Promise: "There was a man who was lame from birth; he used to sit crippled, never having walked in his life. On one occasion he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked directly at him and saw that he had the faith to be saved. He called out to him in a loud voice, 'Stand up! On your feet!' The man jumped up and began to walk around." —Acts 14:8-10

Praise: Sarah has received God's gift of healing and finds that when she prays for people they are sometimes healed immediately.

HARD LESSONS
"We must undergo many trials." —Acts 14:22

At the close of the very first Christian missionary journey, Sts. Paul and Barnabas instructed their disciples: “We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God” (Acts 14:22). Trials, in fact, many trials, are a given for a disciple, even though  Jesus gives a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light (Mt 11:30).

Life is hard. This is not the Lord’s idea. He did not make original sin, “death or mourning, crying out or pain” (Rv 21:4; see Wis 1:13). He will eventually abolish all these evils. By our sins, we have made life hard, and the Lord has permitted this to continue.

By sin, we harden our hearts. Hard objects can be broken up by other harder objects (see Prv 27:17). The Lord can use hard lives to break up and open up our hard hearts. So He lets us “learn the hard way” so that we might repent (see Mk 1:15), give our lives to Him, and not enter the everlasting hardness of hell.

“Oh, that today you would hear His voice: ‘Harden not your hearts’ ” (Ps 95:7-8). Repent of any hardness of heart and go to Confession. If your heart is so hard that you refuse to repent, may the hard life you are making for yourself shatter the hardness of your heart.

Then, if we open our hearts to the Lord, He will let us share in the hard sufferings of His cross (see 1 Pt 4:13) so as to open the hardest hearts.

Prayer: Jesus, You gave us Mary to be our mother shortly before You died on the cross (Jn 19:26-27). Let Mary teach me the hard facts and sublime joys of the cross.

Promise: This is how all will know you for My disciples: your love for one another." —Jn 13:35

Praise: "Rejoice always" (1 Thes 5:16). "He has been raised up!" (Lk 24:6) Thank You, Jesus!
