JESUS, CONSUME ME
"Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes!" —1 Corinthians 11:26

When we celebrate the Eucharist at Mass or visit the Blessed Sacrament in Eucharistic Adoration, there are notes of discordance:

  • we recall that the Eucharist is linked to Jesus being betrayed and handed over (1 Cor 11:23),
  • we recall that the Body of Christ is broken (1 Cor 11:24),
  • we recall that the Eucharist is a sacrifice. Jesus is the Lamb of God Who was slain (Rv 5:6) and offered as a Victim (Is 53:7), and
  • the death of Jesus is proclaimed (1 Cor 11:26).

Reflecting on these painful aspects of the Holy Eucharist, we realize that we are being called, even commanded, to join in that sacrifice. By partaking of the Eucharist, we covenant with Jesus by being joined to His Body. We are called to embrace the cross.

We consume the Body and Blood of Jesus as our Food (Jn 6:55). Then we allow the Lord to consume us (see Heb 12:29). Knowing this, stop and reflect before you receive the Eucharist today. Will you let the Eucharistic Jesus consume you?

Prayer: Jesus, I am all Yours. Consume me and use me as You will.

Promise: "They all ate until they had enough. What they had left, over and above, filled twelve baskets." —Lk 9:17

Praise: "Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore. O, make us love Thee more and more."

"THE WINTER OF DISCONTENT"
"I am content with weakness." —2 Corinthians 12:10

Naturally, all human beings have certain expectations. Naturally, these expectations are not always met. This upsets us. Then we wish we had a different vocation, spouse, child, body, job, home, car, etc. We are not content, although the Lord commands us: “Be it little or much, be content with what you have” (Sir 29:23; see also Heb 13:5).

We are especially discontented when we not only don’t have what we want, but are powerless to do anything about it. When we are too weak to change our lot, we no longer expect to get what we want but expect we will never get it. If we are not content, this leads to a crisis. To be content with our weakness, we must believe that God will change our lot (although we don’t see how), and we might also be required to change our original expectations by denying ourselves (Lk 9:23). Otherwise, we will be tempted to despair. A “winter of discontent” is ideally followed by a springtime of faith and unselfishness, but sometimes by a more bitter despair.

Sometimes our lot is not going to change on this side of death. Therefore, we must be content with our weakness, or we will be manipulated by discontent into despair. Be content with what you cannot change and with what God will not change now. “Be content” (Lk 3:14).

Prayer: Father, as we begin summer in the Northern hemisphere, end my "winter of discontent."

Promise: "If God can clothe in such splendor the grass of the field, which blooms today and is thrown on the fire tomorrow, will He not provide much more for you?" —Mt 6:30

Praise: St. Aloysius routinely rose during the middle of the night to pray.

INSANITY BEGINS WITH "I"
"I am talking like an insane person." —2 Corinthians 11:23, RNAB

St. Paul founded the church at Corinth. After he left Corinth, various false apostles passed through town. These traveling preachers built up their own ministries (and their wallets) by pointing to their own “impressive” credentials rather than pointing to Jesus. By comparing Paul unfavorably to themselves, they undermined his position as father of the church in Corinth. More important in Paul’s eyes, they were undermining the true Gospel and leading people away from the Lord (2 Cor 11:3ff).

The Corinthians, in their foolishness, demanded that Paul once again “prove” his apostleship. In today’s first reading, Paul sarcastically “stoops” to their level in defense of the Gospel he preached. Notice that Paul uses the word “I” eighteen times. To Paul, this emphasis on self is “insane” (2 Cor 11:23). To be insane is to be completely out of touch with reality. The ultimate reality is that Jesus is Lord of heaven and earth (1 Cor 12:3). Everything in heaven revolves around Him (see Rv 4:8ff). The angels revolve around Him (Jn 1:51). Likewise, the earth, since it belongs to God (Ps 24:1), was created to revolve around the Son.

My mother was fond of saying, “The earth doesn’t revolve around me.” To St. Paul, this is the beginning of sanity. When we take our “eyes” off of “I” and fix them on Jesus (see Heb 3:1), our eyes are sound (Mt 6:22) and we are sane.

Die to “I” (see Lk 9:23). Live for Jesus (2 Cor 5:15).

Prayer: Father, I will gaze on Your loveliness forever (Ps 27:4).

Promise: "Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame." —Ps 34:6

FALLEN AWAY?
"My fear is that, just as the serpent seduced Eve by his cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted and you may fall away from your sincere and complete devotion to Christ." —2 Corinthians 11:3

Many American Catholics who have registered in a parish are “fallen away” from fulfilling the obligation of attending Mass on every Sunday and Holy Day. Furthermore, how many are fallen away from meeting the standard that St. Paul enunciated? Paul was fearful that the “chaste virgin” church of Corinth would “fall away” from its “sincere and complete devotion to Christ” (2 Cor 11:2, 3). Moreover, if we love Christ less than we previously did, we are fallen away from our earlier love. If we love Him less than when we first loved Him, we have lost our first love (Rv 2:4). We are lukewarm and are nauseating to the Lord (Rv 3:16).

If we are “fallen away” in any way, we are in danger. A relationship where love is lessening is in trouble. If we love the Lord less, we are not loving Him with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind (Lk 10:27). Thus, we are not obeying the first of all the commandments and the basis for the Law and the prophets (Mt 22:40).

Let us repent, renew our baptismal covenant, go to Confession, and return immediately to our “sincere and complete devotion to Christ” (2 Cor 11:3).

Prayer: Father, You are Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). May I never love You less and continue to love You more forever.

Promise: "This is how you are to pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.' " —Mt 6:9

Praise: St. Romuald founded the Camaldolese order and reformed monasteries and hermitages in Italy.

PLAY-ACTING
"Do not behave like the hypocrites." —Matthew 6:5

The root of the word “hypocrite” means “play-acting.” Jesus teaches that discipleship can never involve play-acting; being a disciple of Christ means to live righteously from the heart. Disciples live to please the Lord God (see 1 Thes 2:4), not to obtain a reward for themselves.

The word “repaid,” used by Jesus in today’s Gospel passage (see Mt 6:5), means a limited repayment, which only satisfies the “actor.” The disciple, on the other hand, leaves the reward, if any, in the hands of God.

God may choose to reward now, later, or not at all. God may reward a small or huge amount; true disciples leave that all up to Him. Unlike the hypocrite’s repayment, the disciple’s reward does not limit God’s generosity, but trusts in His providence (see 2 Cor 9:8). Play-acting limits the reward, limits the fruit, and directs attention to the hypocrite rather than to God. Discipleship places no limits on fruit or repayment. The fruit and the reward could be “bountiful,” if God chooses (see 2 Cor 9:6). All glory goes directly to God.

Resist the temptation to play at being a disciple of Jesus. Take up your cross each day and follow in His footsteps (Lk 9:23). Give the Lord your all in love.

Prayer: Father, may I never limit You in any way. Give me a generous and bountiful heart that lives for You alone.

Promise: "He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully." —2 Cor 9:6

Praise: Jesus healed Roger of cancer of the esophagus.

A PERFECT MAKE-OVER
"You must be made perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." —Matthew 5:48

Some translations render Matthew 5:48 as “be perfect” as your heavenly Father is perfect. The 1970 New American Bible translation says “be made perfect.” This is an important distinction. Following Jesus is not a “do it yourself” endeavor. We cannot be perfect, no matter how hard we try. Following Jesus is truly a “Let it be done to me according to Your will” endeavor (see Lk 1:38).

It is the Father Who is engaged in the work of perfecting us. Our role is to fully cooperate with His work in us. If we try by our own efforts to be perfect, we sentence ourselves to a lifetime of repeated frustration. Rather than focusing on, “How am I doing?”, we instead ask, “Father, what do You want of me? Thy will be done” (see Mt 6:10).

The “better way” is to place ourselves at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words (see Lk 10:39, 42). Devour God’s Word (Jer 15:16), so as to know “what kind of conduct befits a member of God’s household” (1 Tm 3:15). Learn the Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133) and ignorance of the way God wants to make us perfect. Thus you will know the Lord and know His plan for the behavior, mindset, and lifestyle God has chosen to make you perfect.

Prayer: Father, change anything in me that keeps me away from You. Do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "You are well acquainted with the favor shown you by our Lord Jesus Christ; how for your sake He made Himself poor though He was rich, so that you might become rich by His poverty." —2 Cor 8:9

THE NOW WORD OF SALVATION (see Ez 33:30)
"The Lord has made His salvation known." —Psalm 98:2

Through today’s Mass readings, the Church makes known to you the salvation of God. Salvation is the way of suffering persecution, insult (Mt 5:39), hardships (Mt 5:41), afflictions (2 Cor 6:5), and more. That’s what the Lord has made known. We might say, “If this is salvation, I don’t want it!” From the natural, worldly mindset, that’s understandable. However, God’s Word makes known a new “mentality” (see 1 Pt 4:1). “We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God” (Acts 14:22).

Now that the Lord has made known His way of salvation “in the sight of the nations” (Ps 98:2), there is an urgent choice to be made. “Now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6:2). Now, “today,” is the time to prepare for a salvation that involves hardships, sufferings, and persecution.  If you can’t accept this way of salvation, admit it to God “now” (2 Cor 6:2). If you don’t deal with this, it will eventually consume you (see Ps 32:3-5).

Salvation is a “now” word (see Ez 33:30). What if today is the last day you would ever be able to say “Yes” to the Lord’s offer of eternal salvation? We must see God as our loving Father “today,” so we can accept a merciful Savior. “Delay not your conversion to the Lord, put it not off from day to day” (Sir 5:8).

Prayer: "Lord, save me!" (Mt 14:30)

Promise: " 'In an acceptable time I have heard you; on a day of salvation I have helped you.' Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" —2 Cor 6:2

MORE OF GOD
"We are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." —Romans 5:1

Many people know there is a God. Some people even experience that God is present, loving, and personal. Others only sense God as a force. Those people who are aware of God as a Person know they can reject God by sinning. They sometimes know when they’re not at peace with God. Then they feel a need to get right with God, to be justified (Rm 5:1). Few people experience much more of God than this, but there is much, much more of God. Jesus said to His disciples: “I have much more to tell you” (Jn 16:12).

God is Trinity, three Persons in one God. God is a family. God has become a man. This God-made-man is Jesus (see Jn 1:14), Who is fully God and fully man. There is so much more to God than our experiences. The holiest saints who have ever lived have only just begun to know God. “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor 2:9).

On this Trinity Sunday, may we experience in a new way the fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10). May we devote all our energies to developing as deep a relationship with the Trinity as possible. May we let the Spirit guide us to all truth about the Trinity (Jn 16:13).

Prayer: Father, Son, and Spirit, I give my life to You. May I be baptized — immersed — into You (see Mt 28:19).

Promise: "The love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us." —Rm 5:5

Praise: "O most Holy Trinity, undivided Unity; Holy God, mighty God, God immortal, be adored."

ALL HIS
Jesus "died for all so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him Who for their sakes died and was raised up." —2 Corinthians 5:15

On the cross, Jesus took our sins upon Himself to redeem us. He cast our sins into the depths of the sea, never to surface again (Mi 7:19; Ps 103:12). Jesus gave His all for us. He desires that we give our all for Him.

The challenge of the Christian life is to live no longer for ourselves, but for Him Who loved us and gave His life for us (2 Cor 5:15). With St. Paul, we are called to profess: “I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:19-20).

The basic problem is that our flesh is never satisfied, which leads to a civil war inside our heart and soul (Jas 4:1). The good news is that Jesus loves us and wants what is good for us. He is kind and merciful (Ps 103:8). He calls us away from the sin that enslaves us, and delivers us into the detachment and discipline that frees us.

When we are in Him, we are new creations (2 Cor 5:17). Live for Jesus and live no longer for yourself. Be all His.

Prayer: Jesus, make my heart like Yours, so that I might live only for You.

Promise: "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He put our transgressions from us." —Ps 103:12

"Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed." —2 Corinthians 4:10

Each day, we human beings are one day closer to death. “Death is at work in us” (2 Cor 4:12). Some would wryly agree with the observation that our churches are full of dead people. Jesus Himself told the church of Sardis: “You are dead!” (Rv 3:1)

In one sense, our churches should be filled with dead people. We Christians are called to die to ourselves (Jn 12:24; Lk 9:23), to daily put to death our sinful nature, to renounce ourselves, our desires, and our possessions to become Jesus’ disciples (Lk 14:33). We empty ourselves (Phil 2:7) and count all as loss (Phil 3:8). We are, at this point, a dead body. In this state of emptiness, we receive Jesus, Who is Life (Jn 14:6). His life is revealed in us (2 Cor 4:10) in such a way that it is obvious to all that anything we do is God’s doing and not our own (2 Cor 4:7).

This is the essence of the Paschal mystery. Jesus, shortly before He died, broke bread and said, “This is My body to be given for you” (Lk 22:19). We in turn receive Him in the Eucharist and tell Him, “Jesus, this is my body, to be given for You.” We offer our bodies to Him as living sacrifices (Rm 12:1). We have so completely died to ourselves that nothing in us can block the flow of His life through us.

Die to yourself daily; take up your cross (Mt 16:24); receive the Eucharistic Jesus; and “make known the glory of God shining on the face of Christ” (2 Cor 4:6).

Prayer: Father, "to me, 'life' means Christ; hence dying is so much gain" (Phil 1:21). I offer You every moment of my life. Bring many to Yourself through my sacrifices.

Promise: "Everything is ordered to your benefit." —2 Cor 4:15

Praise: St. Anthony was used by God to preach against the monetary practices of his day, such as usury and avarice.

RE-BORN FREE
"Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." —2 Corinthians 3:17

Freedom is at God’s core. Evil can exist only because God has given us free choice, and many difficult consequences spring from the misuse of this God-given freedom (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1861). Nonetheless, this freedom enables a far greater love, a far greater good, a “glory dwelling in our land” (Ps 85:10). Freely-given love and free obedience is what the Father desires (see Jn 10:17-18).

God’s desire is that we will freely choose to love Him, serve Him, and love others. Freely-given love unlocks the glory of God (see Catechism, 1712). It helps remove the veil that blinds us from recognizing the truth of God’s love (2 Cor 3:15-18). We live not by rules, but by the Holy Spirit of freedom (2 Cor 3:17). We live to bring joy to the Father’s heart by loving Him freely.

Are you free? Do you want to be free? Repent of using your God-given freedom to prefer slavery. By God’s grace, may you be set free, re-born free (Jn 8:36). Love God freely in the Spirit of freedom. “For freedom Christ has set us free” (Catechism, 1741; see also Gal 5:1).

Prayer: Father, You love us freely (Hos 14:5). Give me the grace to freely choose to love and serve You every day.

Promise: "For God, Who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts, that we in turn might make known the glory of God shining on the face of Christ." —2 Cor 4:6

Praise: Jack repented of listening to too many radio talk shows and returned to morning prayer time with his first Love (Rv 2:4).

NAME-CHANGE
"He encouraged them all to remain firm in their commitment to the Lord, since he himself was a good man filled with the Holy Spirit and faith." —Acts 11:23-24

Joseph’s name was changed to Barnabas because he was such an encouragement to the Church through his words and finances (Acts 4:36-37). The name “Barnabas” means “son of encouragement” (Acts 4:36).

For a Jew, the name “Joseph” referred to the Joseph of the book of Genesis. He had great dreams, was sold into slavery by his brothers, and was eventually responsible for the survival of Egypt and the rest of the Middle East during a seven-year famine.Joseph’s life story was one of recovery — recovering his freedom, family, and food.

Like Joseph, St. Barnabas was a survivor who helped everyone else survive and a builder of the kingdom. He was breaking new ground, attacking the gates of hell (Mt 16:18, RNAB), and not just playing defense. He was not only reacting in faith but acting in faith.

We likewise need a name-change. We must change from crisis intervention to evangelization, from survival to revival, and from avoiding defeat to claiming the victory.

Prayer: Father, continue to change the Simons to Peters, the Sauls to Pauls, and the Josephs to Barnabases.

Promise: "Make this announcement: 'The reign of God is at hand!' Cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons." —Mt 10:7-8

Praise: St. Barnabas returned home to Cyprus to share the Good News with his countrymen. Although he was not one of the original Twelve, Barnabas was an apostle and a close companion of St. Paul and St. Mark. He played a chief role in evangelization in the Church.

THE FLAVOR THAT TOOK OVER THE WORLD
"You are the salt of the earth. But what if salt goes flat? How can you restore its flavor? Then it is good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." —Matthew 5:13

We who are Christians are the salt of the earth. That means we give flavor to life. The everyday activities of life are often laborious. We make our living by the sweat of our brow (Gn 3:19). “Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! What profit has man from all the labor which he toils at under the sun?” (Eccl 1:2-3) Life is often uneventful, boring, and drab. The lives of many people are in great need of seasoning.

Over two thousand years ago, God became man and lived in our human condition (see Jn 1:14). He gave a divine flavor to our human existence, especially through His death and Resurrection. He then made it possible for us to be baptized into Him (see Rm 6:3). Thus, in Jesus, we take on that unique flavor which makes life worth living. In Jesus and through Jesus’ disciples in His Church, everyday life tastes great. Christians can make manual labor tangy and human relationships zesty. Flavored with Christianity, even the most difficult aspects of life have a “full-bodied flavor.”

Live your Baptism into Jesus. Be flavorful as He is. Make life deliciously delightful.

Prayer: Father, make me the flavor of Christ in a very pronounced way.

Promise: "God is the One Who firmly establishes us along with you in Christ; it is He Who anointed us and has sealed us, thereby depositing the first payment, the Spirit, in our hearts." —2 Cor 1:21-22

Praise: Father Bob prays for two hours before each Mass he celebrates.

MOTHER OF US ALL
"One and all were born in her; And He who has established her is the Most High Lord." —Psalm 87:5

Do you feel frustrated when not getting the support you need? In life, our human frailties often prevent us from serving one another as we should. But don’t despair! “We believe that the Holy Mother of God, the new Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven to exercise her maternal role on behalf of the members of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 975).

As Mary stood “near the cross of Jesus” (see Jn 19:25), mother and Son shared the ultimate moment of rejection. Yet there is no resurrection without the crucifixion. Evil did not triumph, “for it was impossible that death should keep its hold on Him” (Acts 2:24). Christ’s atoning sacrifice paved the way for our rebirth. God’s plan that our salvation would come through the Church was manifested when “blood and water flowed out” (Jn 19:34) from Jesus’ side. “As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam’s side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross” (Catechism, 766).

Eve “became the mother of all the living” (Gn 3:20). Yet she fell into temptation and sinned. Mary’s obedience remedied Eve’s disobedience. Thus, Mary is the mother of those reborn in Christ, of “those who keep God’s commandments and give witness to Jesus” (see Rv 12:17). Trust in the power of the Blessed Mother’s intercession. She is ready, willing, and able to be your advocate.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may all Your disciples joyfully obey Your command to behold and accept Mary as mother (Jn 19:26-27).

Promise: "Then He said to the disciple, 'Behold, your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into his home." —Jn 19:27, RNAB

THE SPIRIT ILLUMINATES THE WORD
"Receive the Holy Spirit." —John 20:22

As a college student, I participated in a Life in the Spirit seminar. The team members laid their hands on me in prayer that Jesus would baptize me in the Holy Spirit (see Mk 1:8). The next day as I opened my Bible for daily Scripture study, the words came alive for me, jumping off the page! The Holy Spirit illuminated the Word. In the decades since, the Scriptures have been “my joy and the happiness of my heart” (Jer 15:16).

Ask the Lord to stir up the Holy Spirit you received in Baptism and Confirmation (Lk 11:13). Read the Bible often, even daily, to give the Spirit an opportunity to open your mind “to the understanding of the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45). Ask the Holy Spirit for the gift of teaching (Rm 12:7) so you can be empowered to share the Word of God fruitfully with others. God “does not ration His gift of the Spirit” (Jn 3:34; Ti 3:6).

Thirst for the Holy Spirit (see Jn 7:37-38). Each day before reading the Holy Bible, pray the “Come, Holy Spirit” prayer, asking the Spirit to illuminate the Word for you (see the “Prayer” below). Some Catholic Bibles quote that prayer in the introduction, recommending to pray it before reading the Scriptures. Fr. Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, said, “The more I say ‘No’ to myself, the more I say ‘Yes’ to the Holy Spirit.” Decrease so Jesus and the Spirit may increase (Jn 3:30), not just in your own life but in a world which desperately needs the Spirit.

Prayer: "Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created, and You will renew the face of the earth."

Promise: "All were filled with the Holy Spirit." —Acts 2:4

Praise: "Come, Holy Spirit, come. And from Your celestial home shed a ray of light divine."

MINDING OUR OWN BUSINESS
"How does that concern you?" —John 21:22

Our modern society must be one of the nosiest groups of people in history. We have talk radio shows, gossip columns, tabloid magazines, “reality TV” shows, social media, etc. It seems like we mind everyone’s business but our own.

While our society peers into the lives of everyone else, our own lives are falling apart. Our own marriages deteriorate due to neglect, unforgiveness, and unfaithfulness. Children run around unsupervised and fall in with the wrong crowd. As a result, teen smoking, drinking, drug abuse, fornication, and abortion are rampant. Our own lives fall apart as we turn to substances, entertainment, compulsions, and escapism for fleeting solace.

Jesus cries out: “Enough” (Lk 22:38). He commands us to look at the plank in our own eye instead of spending so much time looking at the specks in the eyes of others (Mt 7:3ff). We are to avoid the babble of senseless controversies (2 Tm 2:23; Prv 20:19) or meddling in quarrels not our own (Prv 26:17). In the words of St. Teresa of Kolkata, we must “mind our own business.”

What is our business? Jesus makes this clear: “Your business is to follow Me” (Jn 21:22). We follow Jesus by doing what He has commanded us: putting our own houses in order (Is 38:1), loving our spouses, raising our children in godliness (Eph 6:4), loving one another (Jn 15:17), forgiving all who hurt us, etc.

Tomorrow is the great feast of Pentecost. Our business is to “receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Father, I repent of ignoring You and wasting the time You give me. Purify my mind and fill me with the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "The Lord is just, He loves just deeds; the upright shall see His face." —Ps 11:7

Praise: Alicia took on the project of organizing and coordinating hundreds of people so that her parish could have coverage for 168 hours of perpetual Eucharistic adoration each week.

SPREAD THIN TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL
"I issued orders that [Paul] be kept in custody until I could send him to the emperor." —Acts 25:21

The goal of the Acts of the Apostles is that the Gospel message reach to the ends of the earth. Acts considers Rome, the capital of the Roman Empire, to be “the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The last seven chapters of Acts record a series of extremely challenging events which led St. Paul to Rome. In order for the Gospel to reach Rome, Paul had to endure great sufferings. Paul paid the price of two extra years in prison so that the Gospel could be heard by the highest officials in the Roman Empire. Yet Paul rejoiced because his personal sufferings turned into a means to evangelization, saying that his “situation has worked out to the furtherance of the gospel” (Phil 1:12).

Paul wasn’t the only one who endured challenging situations for the spread of the Gospel. St. Peter paid the price of being bound and held captive so as to build up the Church (see Jn 21:18-19). Jesus spent over thirty years separated from the bliss of heavenly union with His Father so that the Gospel could reach a lost world.

As servants of God, we are “taken captive by God to do His will” (2 Tm 2:26), and God’s will is that all people “be saved and come to know the truth” (1 Tm 2:4). The challenges in our lives may be precisely the means that God uses for a greater purpose — to spread His Word. Say with Jesus, Peter, and Paul: “I am not seeking my own will but the will of Him Who sent me” (Jn 5:30).

Prayer: Jesus, I would rather endure years of suffering for You and Your Word than live in comfort without You (see Ps 84:11). I give my life to You so Your sheep may be fed (Jn 21:15-17).

Promise: "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He put our transgressions from us." —Ps 103:12

Praise: St. Norbert repented of a love of luxury which kept him from wholeheartedly serving Jesus. He chose to live in Gospel poverty and spread the Gospel for decades as a traveling preacher.

"ONE" SPIRIT
"I pray that they may be [one] in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me." —John 17:21

God created man and woman to be one flesh, crafting a supernatural unity (Gn 2:24). Adam and Eve sinned against God, and with their fallen nature, humanity inherited a tendency to fracture into disunity. Before long, mankind was so wicked (Gn 6:5) that God wiped them out in the flood (Gn 7:23).

So God started over again with Noah’s family, and again the human race began with unity (Gn 8:16). Before long, man’s pride again resulted in a false unity, as men joined together to glorify themselves rather than God (Gn 11:4ff). So God decided to bring division (cf Lk 12:51), through different languages and physical dispersion.

After many years, God sent His Son “to gather into one all the dispersed children of God” (Jn 11:52). Jesus did this by ascending into heaven and, with the Father, sending forth the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the Spirit started over again and reversed man’s disunity. The apostles and disciples “were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves in foreign tongues” (Acts 2:4). Dispersed people heard and understood the Gospel in their own language (Acts 2:11).

Our fallen human nature tends toward disunity. Only the Spirit can unite us. “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22). Come, Holy Spirit of unity! (Eph 4:3)

Prayer: Holy Spirit, pour out the love of God in my heart (Rm 5:5). Give me Your heart for Christian unity.

Promise: "You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in Your presence, the delights at Your right hand forever." —Ps 16:11

Praise: St. Boniface was consumed by a zeal to spread the Word of God to foreign lands. He was martyred at the age of 79 while preparing new converts for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

"THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT"
"Be on guard, therefore. Do not forget that for three years, night and day, I never ceased warning you individually even to the point of tears." —Acts 20:31

St. Paul warned the Ephesian Christians individually for three years, night and day. He warned them of “savage wolves” from their own number who would distort the truth and lead astray any who follow them (Acts 20:29-30).

Guarding Christians against false teaching is a major emphasis in the New Testament. Jesus warns us against wolves in sheep’s clothing (Mt 7:15) and hireling shepherds who don’t protect the sheep (Jn 10:12-13). Paul told St. Timothy to “stay on in Ephesus in order to warn certain people there against teaching false doctrines” (1 Tm 1:3). He warned Timothy: “The time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears. They will stop listening to the truth and will wander off to fables” (2 Tm 4:3-4).

Using “the sword of the Spirit” (see Eph 6:17), the Church is “the pillar and bulwark of truth” (1 Tm 3:15). In the power of the Spirit of truth (see Jn 16:13), we are “to fight hard for the faith delivered once for all to the saints” (Jude 3). We “must hold fast to the authentic message, so that [we] will be able both to encourage men to follow sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it. There are many irresponsible teachers” (Ti 1:9-10). “Their lustful ways will lure many away. Through them, the true way will be made subject to contempt” (2 Pt 2:2).

Therefore, “guard the rich deposit of faith with the help of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us” (2 Tm 1:14).

Prayer: Father, on this sixth day of the novena to the Holy Spirit, send the Spirit of truth.

Promise: "I consecrate Myself for their sakes now, that they may be consecrated in truth." —Jn 17:19

Praise: After adding fasting to his prayer, Tom found his prayer life invigorated with new energy.

THE SPIRIT OF PARADOX
"The Holy Spirit has been warning me from city to city that chains and hardships await me. I put no value on my life if only I can finish my race." —Acts 20:23-24

The Holy Spirit, being God, is paradoxical. The Holy Spirit gives us light to see what we’ve never seen before. We can receive insights about the past and recognize in the present great opportunities which we have never noticed before. At the same time, our life in the Holy Spirit often puts us in the position where we have no idea what will happen to us (see Acts 20:22). We see so much more, but we also see that our “so much more” is nothing compared to the blinding light of the mystery of God.

In the Holy Spirit, we receive not only light but life — abundant life (see Jn 10:10). The Spirit makes us more alive than ever before. Paradoxically, however, we receive this full life by dying to self. “Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed” (2 Cor 4:10). We have life in the Spirit only because we have death in the Spirit.

Human beings naturally fear paradoxes. Therefore, we fear mystery and the Holy Spirit. Yet the Lord repeatedly commands us not to fear, and He graces us accordingly. Jesus said: “Fear is useless. What is needed is trust” (Mk 5:36). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, on this fifth day of the Pentecost novena, I accept the grace to trust the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "Eternal life is this: to know You, the only true God, and Him Whom You have sent, Jesus Christ." —Jn 17:3

Praise: The king of Uganda, enraged at the refusal of some of his page boys to submit to his immoral demands, ordered his Christian servants to separate from the non-Christian ones. St. Charles Lwanga and fourteen other young men stepped forward, declared their loyalty to Jesus, and courageously endured martyrdom.

TWELVE WEAK MEN
"They answered, 'We have not so much as heard that there is a Holy Spirit.' " —Acts 19:2

The Ephesian believers talked and acted in such a way that St. Paul questioned whether they had the Holy Spirit. In response to Paul’s question, the Ephesians said they had never heard of the Holy Spirit. Paul then found out they had only received the baptism of John. Paul proceeded to tell them about Jesus and baptize them. Then Paul administered to them the Sacrament of Confirmation. “As Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came down on them and they began to speak in tongues and to utter prophecies” (Acts 19:6).

Although the Ephesians didn’t even know their faith, they were able to receive both Jesus and the Holy Spirit within a very short time. Why do the gifts of the Spirit operate in some people right away and others wait for months or even years? The Ephesians could move in the Holy Spirit without delay because they admitted their weakness. They admitted they didn’t even know there was a Holy Spirit (Acts 19:2). In their humility and weakness, God’s power reached perfection (2 Cor 12:9). The power of the Holy Spirit is not for those who pretend they’re powerful but for the “merest children” (Lk 10:21). Will you admit to being weak enough to receive the Spirit?

Prayer: Jesus, I am weak but You are strong. Baptize me in the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8).

Promise: "I tell you all this that in Me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world." —Jn 16:33

Praise: Sts. Marcellinus and Peter led their jailer and his family to conversion, and they were all martyred together.
