THE MANNA TEST
"I will now rain down bread from heaven for you."—Exodus 16:4

God rained manna down on His people. Manna, the miraculous bread which God provided to Israel for forty years, was “fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground” (Ex 16:14). Jesus proclaimed that the manna of the New Testament is both the Eucharist and the bread of God’s Word (Mt 4:4). Jesus also proclaimed: “This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and died nonetheless, the man who feeds on this bread shall live forever” (Jn 6:58). This bread is Jesus’ “flesh, for the life of the world” (Jn 6:51), that is, Holy Communion. In the new covenant, we can receive the new, “hidden” (Rv 2:17), and ultimate Manna, Jesus Himself, the Bread of life (Jn 6:35).

When the Lord rained manna down on His people, He tested them to see whether they would follow His instructions or not (Ex 16:4). In the new covenant, when the Lord rains down on us the manna of His Word and the Eucharist, He is testing us to see if we will not only hear His Word but also do it (Jas 1:22). The Lord gives us the new manna of His Word and the Eucharist to see whether we will live a eucharistically centered life and bear fruit in a hundredfold harvest (Mt 13:8).

Are you passing the manna test? Are you following all of Jesus’ instructions, not just in the letter of the law but in the Spirit? (2 Cor 3:6) Abide in God’s Word (Jn 8:31); live in communion with Him; pass the manna test.

Prayer: Father, may I delight in obeying You (see Ps 40:9).

Promise: "Let everyone heed what he hears!" —Mt 13:9

Praise: From an early age, St. Bridget dedicated every Friday to meditating upon Jesus' Passion.

"GOD IS AGAPE" (see 1 Jn 4:16)
"Tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away." —John 20:15

God is Love (1 Jn 4:16), but He is not just any kind of love. He is “agape-love.” Agape is the Greek word that appears in the Scriptures which means unconditional love. God loves each one of us perfectly and infinitely. He loves us even though we helped crucify His Son by our sins (see Acts 3:15; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). He loves us whether or not we ever love Him. He loves us even if we decide to never love Him, even if we decide to hate Him and be alienated from Him forever.

St. Mary Magdalene loved Jesus with unconditional love. She asked to take away the dead body of Jesus (Jn 20:15). She wanted to hold His body even if He couldn’t touch, hear, or speak to her. To hold Jesus’ body would give her extreme pain, but she wanted to hold it anyway. She loved Jesus unconditionally.

Do you love Jesus when He seems dead to you? Would you love Jesus if He never answered any of your prayers? (see Hab 3:17-18) Would you love Him if you never felt Him? Would you love Him if He permitted all your children to die in one day? (see Jb 1:19-21) Would you die for love of Him (see Dn 3:18) even if He let you suffer terrible pain and disease? (see Jb 2:7)

God is Love (1 Jn 4:8). Receive His love, and love Him with that same unconditional love. St. Mary Magdalene, pray for us.

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever it takes for me to love You unconditionally.

Promise: "The love of Christ impels us who have reached the conviction that since One died for all, all died. He died for all so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him Who for their sakes died and was raised up." —2 Cor 5:14-15

Praise: St. Mary Magdalene, once possessed by seven demons (Lk 8:2), freely gave herself to the One Who set her free.

GRAND STAND
"Stand your ground, and you will see the victory the Lord will win for you today." —Exodus 14:13

If we stand our ground, we will see the victory of the Lord, for He will fight for us (Ex 14:14). Moses made this promise before the Lord rescued the chosen people by drowning the Egyptians in the Red Sea. This is a symbol of Baptism.

When we stand on the ground of our Baptism, we will see the Lord’s victory. We must stand on the fact that through Baptism we are in Christ (see Gal 3:27). Therefore, we are new creations, children of God the Father, redeemed by the blood of Jesus, temples of the Holy Spirit, and members of the Church, the Body of Christ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1265, 1267).

If we stand on the ground of our own power, plans, or importance, we will not see the Lord’s victory. Our own basis for victory is groundless (see Lk 14:28-30).

God’s victory comes to those standing on the right ground: God’s ground. Many Christians have disregarded God’s “no trespassing” signs and stand on the wrong ground. When they repent, get back where they belong, and stand there, they will see God’s victory. Back to Baptism. Forward to victory (see Ex 14:15).

Prayer: Father, may I stand where You tell me to stand.

Promise: "At the judgment, the queen of the South will rise with the present generation and be the one to condemn it. She came from the farthest corner of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; but you have a greater than Solomon here." —Mt 12:42

Praise: St. Lawrence of Brindisi defended the Church against heretics and raiding bands of Turks.

"THE GREATEST THING IN ALL MY LIFE..."
"Martha, who was busy with all the details of hospitality, came to Him." —Luke 10:40

One of the greatest things a human being can do is to offer hospitality. When Abraham and Sarah offered hospitality, they entertained God and angels (Heb 13:2), who revealed to Abraham that his wife Sarah would miraculously have her first child at the age of ninety (Gn 18:2ff). Jesus gave us His Body and Blood in the context of the hospitality of the Last Supper. To qualify as a Christian leader, a person must be hospitable (1 Tm 3:2). Therefore, St. Martha’s hospitality to Jesus and His apostles was a great work of God.

Nevertheless, some things are even greater than the greatness of hospitality. To be a disciple, to sit at the Lord’s feet and listen to His words (Lk 10:39), is so great that the risen and ascending Jesus commanded His apostles to make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19). This command is often and rightly called “the Great Commission.” Discipleship is the essence of God’s plan. It is our greatest privilege and responsibility to be and make disciples of the Lord. We were baptized into discipleship (Mt 28:19).

Renew your Baptism. Deny yourself, take up your crosses daily, lose your life (Lk 9:23-24), and be a disciple of the Lord.

Prayer: Father, may I live and die in imitation of Jesus (see Phil 3:10).

Promise: "Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for you. In my own flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His body, the Church." —Col 1:24

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Master of His disciples!

I HOPE SO
"In His name, the Gentiles will find hope." —Matthew 12:21

The Church through Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of Mary’s Assumption in 1950. After all the centuries the Assumption was preached and believed, the Church chose to define it in 1950 as a proclamation of hope. The Second Vatican Council’s great document on the Church concludes by proclaiming Mary as the “sign of sure hope” (Lumen Gentium, 68).

Pope St. John Paul II introduced the Catechism of the Catholic Church with the Scripture: “Venerate the Lord, that is, Christ, in your hearts. Should anyone ask you the reason for this hope of yours, be ever ready to reply” (1 Pt 3:15). Pope St. John Paul II prophetically named one of his books Crossing the Threshold of Hope. “In hope we were saved. But hope is not hope if its object is seen; how is it possible for one to hope for what he sees? And hoping for what we cannot see means awaiting it with patient endurance” (Rm 8:24-25).

Hear the prophecy of hope. Be a sign of hope. Be a prophet of hope. “This hope will not leave us disappointed, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us” (Rm 5:5).

Prayer: Father, may I be motivated by hope.

Promise: "This was a night of vigil for the Lord, as He led them out of the land of Egypt; so on this same night all the Israelites must keep a vigil for the Lord throughout their generations." —Ex 12:42

THE PASSOVER
"It is the Passover of the Lord." —Exodus 12:11

Through the Passover, the Lord freed the Israelite nation from centuries of slavery. The Lord chose to do one of His greatest works through a family meal accompanied by prayer. This Passover meal was so important that it became “a memorial feast” to be celebrated by all generations “as a perpetual institution” (Ex 12:14).

A few hours before Jesus died on the cross to save us all from sin and for eternal life, He said: “I have greatly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Lk 22:15). Then Jesus commanded: “Do this as a remembrance of Me” (Lk 22:19). Jesus connected the Passover with His death on the cross. He made the Eucharist the ultimate Passover.

St. Paul not only identified the Eucharist with the Passover but went so far as to call Jesus our Passover (1 Cor 5:7). The Passover is the great liberation-feast and the salvation-memorial. How important is the Passover in your life? How great is your desire to celebrate the Passover? Do you want to receive Christ, your Passover, daily? Do you invite others to the new Passover? Is your life centered on the eucharistic Jesus? Celebrate the Passover of the New Covenant.

Prayer: Father, may I desire to eat the Eucharist more than I desire anything else.

Promise: "Seeing the blood, I will pass over you; thus, when I strike the land of Egypt, no destructive blow will come upon you." —Ex 12:13

Praise: St. Camillus is the patron saint of the sick and of hospitals, nurses, and physicians.

REST STOP
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you." —Matthew 11:28

Imagine yourself coming to Jesus with a huge burden on your back. Jesus takes the burden off your shoulders (see Ps 81:7). Before you can even thank Him and walk away unburdened, He takes a humongous burden off of His back and puts it on yours. Now you’ve got more to carry than ever before. For some reason, however, His yoke is easy and His burden light (Mt 11:30). Because this is Jesus’ burden, He is bearing most of the weight. You are another Simon of Cyrene helping Jesus carry the cross (Lk 23:26). You’re made to carry this cross. You’re rested and strengthened in carrying this cross. You come to a point where you boast of nothing but the cross of Jesus Christ (Gal 6:14).

Realistically, we cannot be unburdened in this life on earth. We can only be re-burdened with Jesus’ burden, the cross. Pretending that we can unburden ourselves makes life more burdensome. We make life harder by trying to make it easier. Paradoxically, the heaviest burden, that is, the cross, is the easiest to carry because Jesus carried it. It is in striving to carry the cross that we enter into His rest (see Heb 4:11). Take up your cross daily (Lk 9:23) and get the best rest you’ll get on this earth.

Prayer: Father, give me both earthly and eternal rest.

Promise: "I am concerned about you and about the way you are being treated." —Ex 3:16

MOUNTAIN RANGE
"He came to Horeb, the mountain of God." —Exodus 3:1

There are many mountains in life. For example, Mount Gerizim is the mountain of blessings for God’s obedient people, while Mount Ebal is the mountain of curses (Dt 27:12-13). Mount Sinai (Horeb) is the mountain of the commandments (Ex 19:2ff), and Mount Carmel is the mountain of restoring our covenant with God and overcoming idolatry and false prophets (1 Kgs 18:19ff). Ultimately, Jesus wants us to walk with Him to Mount Calvary, by which we draw “near to Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Heb 12:22).

To start climbing God’s mountain range, we need to begin as Moses began — on Mount Horeb (Ex 3:1). There we see God in the burning bush (Ex 3:2-4). We see God consuming us by the fire of His love (see Heb 12:29). On Mount Horeb, we hear God call our names (Ex 3:4) and reveal to us His name (Ex 3:14). Mount Horeb is holy ground (Ex 3:5). Here we take off our shoes (Ex 3:5) and humble ourselves. On Mount Horeb, we enter into the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10) and of much of the Christian life.

Climb Mount Horeb. Hear your Father call you by name.

Prayer: Father, after beginning at Horeb, may I end at Zion.

Promise: "No one knows the Son but the Father, and no one knows the Father but the Son — and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him." —Mt 11:27

Praise: Our Lady of Mount Carmel promised that her Son would transform our lives if we would repent.

BABY PICTURES
"She took a papyrus basket, daubed it with bitumen and pitch, and putting the child in it, placed it among the reeds on the river bank." —Exodus 2:3

Imagine a homemade basket floating on a river. Inside this basket is a crying, three-month-old baby boy. This baby will grow up to save the Israelite nation from slavery.

Imagine a newborn Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger (Lk 2:7). This Baby has been born in a stable and is surrounded by animals. This Baby is God and the Savior of the world.

Imagine the several thousand babies who will be aborted today surgically or chemically. See them floating and growing inside their mothers. These babies will be starved to death, poisoned, or dismembered today. These babies were destined to be children of God.

These three sets of baby pictures separated by thousands of years are related. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how the middle picture of Jesus is the picture of life and freedom. There is one Baby picture we need to look at constantly. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1), the Savior and Hope of the world.

Prayer: Father, make me stop staring at myself.

Promise: "The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not." —Ps 69:34

DEATH-DEFYING?
"Look how numerous and powerful the Israelite people are growing, more so than we ourselves! Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase." —Exodus 1:9-10

Pharaoh tried to decimate the chosen people by commanding “all his subjects, ‘Throw into the river every boy that is born to the Hebrews’ ” (Ex 1:22). Satan is trying to decimate the Christian people by commanding us to contracept and not have children or, if this fails, to kill our children through chemical and surgical abortions. If we obey Satan’s commands, we will perpetuate and extend our culture of death. But if we, like Moses’ mother, rebel and choose life (Ex 2:1-10), we will see the Lord raise our culture from the dead.

Most people don’t recognize Satan’s attempts to impose his will on us. Satan disguises the fact that he seeks nothing less than a totalitarian dictatorship. He likes to let his pawns think that they are doing their own thing. It is amusing to him when his slaves pretend they are free.

Therefore, “choose life” (Dt 30:19) and rebel against the tyranny of the prince of death (see Heb 2:14). Choose Jesus, “the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn 14:6). Reject sin and its deadly wages (Rm 6:23). Don’t let yourself be used and abused by our culture of death. Join the exodus of God’s people from death, sin, and damnation into life eternal.

Prayer: Father, I accept fully the abundant life given to me through your Son's death (see Jn 10:10).

Promise: "Whoever gives a cup of cold water to one of these lowly ones because he is a disciple will not want for his reward." —Mt 10:42

Praise: St. Kateri was burdened with sickness and persecution from her own people but endured in her commitment to Christ Jesus.

NEAR-MISS?
"It is something very near to you." —Deuteronomy 30:14

The priest and Levite both “saw” the wounded victim, but didn’t want to get near him to avoid becoming ritually impure (Lk 10:31, 32). The Samaritan, though, had no hesitation about getting near the hurting man. The Samaritan “approached him” (Lk 10:34) and “treated him with compassion” (Lk 10:37).

Love has to get near and get involved. Love by its very nature can’t keep its distance. Jesus, Who is Love, could have remained in heaven in eternal bliss with His Father. However, His love impelled Him (see 2 Cor 5:14) to seek us out (Lk 19:10), be near us (Ps 145:18), and even be God-with-us, Emmanuel (Mt 1:23). Now He is so near us that He dwells within us (Jn 6:56; 17:23).

Is there any person, group, or class of people you won’t get near? Do you stay away from the poor, uneducated, crippled, aged, criminals, unrepentant, or those of a different race or religion? These may be your “wounded victims,” your chance to be a good Samaritan. Jesus may be saying that as often as you neglected to get near these people, you neglected to get near Him (Mt 25:45).

Prayer: Jesus, You never kept Your distance from anyone. May I and all who follow You love as You love.

Promise: "The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not." —Ps 69:34

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, resurrected, ascended, and glorified. You sit at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us (Rm 8:34). Alleluia!

TRASH-TALK
"Every hair of your head has been counted." —Matthew 10:30

Today is haircut day. The apron I wear as I sit in the barber chair is covered with little shavings of white hair. When the haircut is over, the barber removes the apron and shakes it out, spreading those hairs all over the floor. Then he sweeps the floor and throws my shorn hair into the trash. God has counted all the hairs of my head (Mt 10:30), even those that are of no account and were cast into the trash.

As Pope Francis often says, we live in a throwaway culture. Secular society treats so much as disposable and not worthy of regard: aborted babies (except for their body parts), the aged who are past the age of productivity, the unprofitable, those in prison, etc. Yet Jesus taught that “all are alive for Him” (Lk 20:38).

Jesus recycles people who have been discarded (see 2 Cor 5:17). He fertilizes the unfruitful over and over and pours out His grace continually upon them, even though others regard them as mere clutter (see Lk 13:7-9). Our trash is Jesus’ treasure. Jesus takes the most unloved, heals and forgives them, restores their souls (Ps 23:3), and creates a masterpiece out of their lives.

Even if you have thrown away your life, give yourself now to Jesus. Nothing is impossible (see Lk 1:37) for the God Who treasures every hair of your head and refuses to discard you.

Prayer: Jesus, I empty the trash can of my life and place it at the foot of Your cross. Take my life and recreate it in Your image.

Promise: "Whoever acknowledges Me before men I will acknowledge before My Father in heaven." —Mt 10:32

Praise: Laura repented of aborting her child. Jesus delivered her from self-hatred and raised her up to lead a ministry in her parish.

GETTING READY TO DIE
"At last I can die, now that I have seen for myself that Joseph is still alive." —Genesis 46:30

Simeon prayed: “Now, Master, You can dismiss Your servant in peace” (Lk 2:29). Simeon was ready to die because he had seen Christ.

St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was ready to die because shortly before his death he saw “an opening in the sky, and the Son of Man standing at God’s right hand” (Acts 7:56).

Death is knocking at the door. Jesus also stands at the door of our lives and knocks (Rv 3:20). If we open the door, see Jesus, and give our lives to Him, we are ready to die and to live.

Jesus promised: “Blest are the single-hearted for they shall see God” (Mt 5:8). To see Jesus is not a matter of the eyes but of the heart (see Eph 1:18). When we see Jesus as our Lord, Savior, and God, then we have a new life, a life stronger than death (see Mt 16:25).

Prayer: Father, enlighten "the eyes of [my] heart" (Eph 1:18, RSV-CE).

Promise: "When they hand you over, do not worry about what you will say or how you will say it. When the hour comes, you will be given what you are to say. You yourselves will not be the speakers; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you." —Mt 10:19-20

Praise: St. Benedict worked miracles, prophesied, and wrote a rule of monastic life which has been followed by monks for centuries.

A CLOSE CALL
"Come closer to me." —Genesis 45:4

The conversation between the powerful Joseph, second-in-command of all Egypt, and his estranged brothers was not going well. Joseph broke through the communication block by setting aside his glory (cf Phil 2:7), emptying himself of his power (see Phil 2:7-8), and telling his brothers, “Come closer to me” (Gn 45:4).

In the Song of Songs, God likewise calls to His beloved, hidden in the rocks of the cliff, to “let Me see you” (Sg 2:14). The Lord wants to hold us close, like a father holds an infant to his cheeks (Hos 11:4), like a mother fondles her nursing infant (see 1 Thes 2:7). Like Joseph, Jesus says to each one of us, “Come to Me” (Mt 11:28). He assures us that He is gentle and humble of heart so that we will not be afraid to come closer to Him (Mt 11:29).

Let us welcome the Lord by saying to Him: “Draw me!” (Sg 1:4) Jesus is Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23). He dwells among us (Jn 1:14). All of Scripture shows a God Who greatly desires (see Lk 22:15) to be close to us. He’s not pleased when we draw back from Him (see Heb 10:38). At Jesus’ death on the cross, God Himself tore open the veil in the sanctuary (Mt 27:51), which had separated the people from the presence of God. God now comes so close to us that He even enters into our bodies in the Holy Eucharist! Therefore, any lack of closeness is on our part, not His. The Lord God says: “Come closer to Me!” (Gn 45:4) How will you respond?

Prayer: Jesus, nothing can separate me from Your love (Rm 8:39) except my own free choice. Nail me to Your cross with You so that I will never leave Your side.

Promise: "The reign of God is at hand!" —Mt 10:7

Praise: For decades, Trina operated an inner-city pregnancy center, ministering to impoverished mothers and their babies and drawing them closer to God.

"FEED MY SHEEP" (Jn 21:17)
"Famine had gripped the whole world."—Genesis 41:57

In both of today’s Mass readings, there is a famine. In both readings, it’s focused on the twelve tribes, who played a role in ending the famine. Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Israel, that is, Jacob. The Old Testament Joseph stored up grain for future distribution during the coming famine (Gn 41:47-57). The young Jesus stored up spiritual grain for the first thirty years of His life, through the help of His foster-father, St. Joseph. Then He called a new Twelve, His apostles, to help distribute this “stored-up” spiritual food to a world which was starved for hearing the Word of the Lord. The twelve, in both cases, helped to distribute food to the world.

What about now? The famine is of staggering proportions. There are shortages of food, shortages of trust in God, shortages of holiness, and a famine for hearing the Word of the Lord (Am 8:11).

The Church is the new Twelve, built on the foundation of the Twelve Apostles (Mt 10:1;cf Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14). Jesus has stored up spiritual grain to feed the world with the bread of God’s Word (Mt 4:4) and the Bread of Life, that is, the Holy Eucharist (Jn 6:35). Now the challenge is in the distribution of this spiritual food. In yesterday’s Gospel, Jesus called for laborers for the harvest (Mt 9:37-38). He calls us to feed the hungry (Mt 25:35, 42). Within our specific vocation, Jesus calls each of us to feed His famished lambs (see Jn 21:15-17). You are an answer to Jesus’ invitation for workers. Answer His call.

Prayer: Father, use me to bring Your nourishment to a famished world.

Promise: "The reign of God is at hand!" —Mt 10:7

Praise: St. Augustine Zhao Rong was a soldier who converted to the Catholic faith while escorting a French bishop. He became a priest and spread the Gospel until arrested. He died as a martyr while in prison.

FIGHTING FOR A BLESSING
"I will not let you go until you bless me." —Genesis 32:27

Jacob certainly understood the importance of a blessing. He wrestled an angel all night until he got his blessing (Gn 32:25ff). Jacob told the angel: “I will not let you go until you bless me” (Gn 32:27). Earlier, he connived and masqueraded to get his father Isaac’s special blessing (Gn 27:4-40).

It’s not unusual to see people leave Mass right after receiving Holy Communion. These folks unfortunately miss out on receiving the priest’s blessing at the end of Mass. If they understood the power of a blessing, they would wrestle for the privilege of receiving a blessing (Gn 32:25), rather than wrestling other parishioners for the chance of beating the parking lot traffic after Mass.

Many people think that blessings are prayers for good things to happen. No, blessings are not prayers from us to God, but blessings are from God to and through us. The blessings at the end of Mass and in the other Sacraments have the potential to re-create the world.

When we treat a blessing as nothing important, it’s not a neutral choice. Biblically, the opposite of a blessing is a curse. A curse may enter in if a blessing is relinquished (see Dt 27:12—28:68). Therefore, it’s very important to be like Jacob and seek blessing. God the Father desires to overwhelm us with blessings (Dt 28:2). Do we in turn desire to let God overwhelm us?

Prayer: "May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear Him!" (Ps 67:8)

Promise: Jesus "cured every sickness and disease." —Mt 9:35

Praise: For years, Pete blessed his children nightly while putting them to bed. Each of them has remained faithful to the Catholic Church as an adult.

THE LANDSCAPE OF HOLINESS
"Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head, set it up as a memorial stone, and poured oil on top of it. He called that site Bethel." —Genesis 28:18-19

Jacob came upon a pagan shrine. There he fell asleep and had a dream in which he met God and received special revelation. “He called that site Bethel,” that is, the house of God (Gn 28:19).

The Lord wants each of us to have several Bethels in our lives. For example, the Lord probably wants several people to decide to give their lives to Him while sitting at our kitchen tables or in our living rooms. Then we will have even more reason to name our homes Bethel, “the house of God.” The Lord wants to forgive, free, heal, and lead people to conversion at our places of employment. Then that hospital, factory, office, school, studio, or field will rightly be called Bethel, “the house of God.” The landscape of our lives should be dotted with Bethels.

The Lord is present everywhere, but there are holy places where His presence is more profound. He is most deeply present as the Eucharist (see 1 Cor 11:27-29). The Lord wants us to be walking tabernacles and fill this world with holy places where His Eucharistic love has transformed lives and given salvation. With Jesus, make Bethels.

Prayer: Father, make me holy and make places holy.

Promise: "Jesus turned around and saw her and said, 'Courage, daughter! Your faith has restored you to health.' That very moment the woman got well." —Mt 9:22

CAN GOD COMFORT YOU?
"As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you." —Isaiah 66:13

In today’s first reading, Isaiah prophesies that the Lord longs to comfort His people as a mother longs to comfort her infant: “Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts!” (Is 66:11; see also Is 40:1) Will we relax and trust God’s providential care for us? Or will we resist and stiffen, refusing God’s comfort?

Jesus plans to send us out as His workers and missionaries. For us to be effective in the mission field, we must trust completely in our Father’s care. Jesus calls us to be “lambs in the midst of wolves” (Lk 10:3). Consider that God the Father sent His Son Jesus to earth as an infant Lamb in the midst of wolves. Jesus totally trusted Mary and Joseph to care for Him, even though wolves such as King Herod sought to put Him to death (Mt 2:16-18).

Jesus wants us to be missionaries who trust the Father as infants trust their parents. He sends us out without “walking staff or traveling bag” so we cannot trust in our own provisions, but only in what the Father provides (Lk 10:4). He tells us not to move from house to house and to eat whatever is set before us (Lk 10:7). This is so we won’t seek comfort in lodging and food; instead we imitate children who eat what their parents put on the table. Thus we can focus not on our own needs, but on comforting God’s people as He has comforted us (see 2 Cor 1:3-7). Relax and trust God as an infant trusts its mother.

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever You want so that You may do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "All that matters is that one is created anew." —Gal 6:15

Praise: All praise to You, risen Jesus, Lord of the Universe. Alleluia!

NEW TESTAMENT FASTING
"Then they will fast." —Matthew 9:15

Jesus’ disciples did not fast, while the Pharisees and St. John’s disciples did fast (Mt 9:14). Jesus explained that His disciples would fast later after they had received a new life in the Spirit. This was necessary because fasting in Jesus’ name is so powerful it would be incompatible with the old lifestyle.

For example, Jesus’ kind of fasting is sometimes very extreme. Jesus fasted for forty days and nights (Mt 4:2). This was much longer than the Israelites’ annual fast on the Day of Atonement and even the two fast days per week of the Pharisees. Without the new life in the Spirit, we won’t have the discernment, strength, and purity of motivation which is important for an extensive fast.

Jesus’ kind of fasting was also different from Old Testament fasting because it was an action more than a reaction. Old Testament fasting was usually a reaction to sin and its disastrous results. However, Jesus used fasting to inaugurate His public ministry. The church at Antioch likewise fasted in order to launch first missionary journey (Acts 13:2-3). Without a life of ministry and mission, we don’t have a wineskin that can hold Jesus’ way of fasting. If we have trouble fasting or don’t see its value, maybe we must first change the old wineskin of our lifestyle.

Prayer: Father, lead me to drastically change my lifestyle. May I then experience a great need to fast.

Promise: "Let peoples serve you, and nations pay you homage." —Gn 27:29

Praise: St. Anthony reflected the love of Jesus by his compassion and his ministry of healing in both physical and spiritual ways.

LIVING AND DYING BY FAITH
"She died." —Genesis 23:2

Sarah died at the age of one hundred and twenty-seven (Gn 23:1). Abraham, her husband, died forty-eight years later at the age of one hundred and seventy-five (Gn 25:7). God had promised Abraham that he would be the father of nations and receive the promised land. When Abraham died, he owned a few feet of the promised land which he purchased for Sarah’s burial plot (see Gn 23:19). At his death, Abraham had only two grandchildren from Isaac, the only son from his marriage with Sarah. At Abraham’s death, God’s promises to Him seemed quite unfulfilled. In the eyes of men, Abraham’s life seemed incomplete.

Jesus died at about the age of thirty-three. He revealed that He was the Savior of the world, the Lord of lords, and God Himself (Jn 20:28). Hardly anyone believed Him. Even His disciples abandoned Him to be executed on a cross. Jesus seemed to have failed in His mission.

The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed (Mt 13:31). It begins very small. It will eventually become a large bush, although that may occur years after your death. You may see only the tiniest fulfillment of God’s promises and die an apparent failure. You will have to live by faith (2 Cor 5:7) and die by faith (Heb 11:21-22). At your death, you may not see the fruit of your life. Your only assurance may be that you loved the Lord. Love, repent, live, die, and believe.

Prayer: Father, may I live by faith and die in Love.

Promise: Jesus "said to him, 'Follow Me.' Matthew got up and followed Him." —Mt 9:9

Praise: Sue prayed over forty years for her children to return to the practice of their Catholic faith. She believed each day that God had heard her prayers and rejoiced to see God answer her prayers in full.

THE LOVE THAT KNOWS NO BOUNDS - One Bread, One Body, 07/03/2025

THE LOVE THAT KNOWS NO BOUNDS
"His answer was, 'I will never believe it without probing the nailprints in His hands, without putting my finger in the nailmarks and my hand into His side.' " —John 20:25

It was unreasonable for St. Thomas to make his examination of Jesus’ wounds a prerequisite for believing in Jesus’ Resurrection. No one, including Thomas, has the right to examine the wounds of Jesus or of anyone. Nevertheless, Jesus fulfilled Thomas’ unreasonable request. Jesus goes to extremes to love and save us. His Incarnation, His crucifixion and death, the gift of His Body and Blood, His repeated forgiveness and mercy, and His humility in acceding to many of our unreasonable demands are amazing indications that His love for us knows no bounds.

Yet some people are so blinded that they don’t recognize the Lord’s extreme love. Some are so callous that they presumptuously think they can delay their conversion to the Lord because He’ll keep giving them chances to repent. However, others respond to the Lord’s radical love for them as Thomas eventually responded. They cry out to Jesus with their whole being: “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28)

The Lord has created us to love us. He has been pursuing us for years. He is madly in love with us. Will you love Him? Love Him with all your heart (Mt 22:37). Accept Jesus as your Lord and God.

Prayer: God, I love You, Who are Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). I will live and die for You.

Promise: "You are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God." —Eph 2:19

Praise: "Thomas said in response, 'My Lord and my God!' " (Jn 20:28)

OUT OF SYNC WITH GOD
"Drive out that slave and her son!" —Genesis 21:10

God promised Abraham a son so that he would be the father of nations (Gn 15:4ff). However, Abraham and Sarah were getting very old, and God’s promise seemingly wasn’t coming to pass. So Sarah took control and gave Abraham her maid Hagar as a surrogate mother. “Hagar bore him Ishmael” (Gn 16:16). Years later, God’s perfect timing arrived, and Sarah conceived and bore Isaac. God “did for her as He had promised” (Gn 21:1). Yet a great deal of human suffering and injustice occurred in Abraham’s family because Sarah and Abraham jumped ahead of God and took control away from Him. In His mercy, God turned some of the family problems to the good (Rm 8:28), but many future problems have arisen because of this rift between Sarah and Hagar. We pray that one glorious day Abraham’s modern-day descendants will be fully reconciled.

The Israelites didn’t learn the lesson. God miraculously delivered them from slavery in Egypt. Then He planned for them to march into the promised land and seize it (Nm 13:2ff). However, the Israelites feared the inhabitants of the promised land more than they feared the God Who led them through the Red Sea. They lagged behind God, and wouldn’t enter the land. As a consequence of this rebellious fear, they wandered forty years in the desert (Nm 14:32-34). Hoping to avoid this fate, some switched from lagging behind God to jumping ahead of Him. They invaded the promised land and were routed (Nm 14:39-45).

God’s timing is perfect; we are imperfect. Be in sync with God by attentively listening to Him each day. Let His will be done in your life, and He will direct you perfectly (Is 30:21).

Prayer: Father, I know how easily I can disrupt Your plans, but I trust even more that You will lead me in straight paths (Ps 23:3).

Promise: "Nought is lacking to those who fear Him." —Ps 34:10

Praise: Ted volunteered to transport bulk shipments of food in his car for a ministry that feeds the hungry (see Mt 25:35).
