THE ZENITH OF HUMAN LIFE
"Someone said to Him, 'I will be Your follower wherever You go.' " —Luke 9:57

To be disciples of Jesus, that is, Christians, we must give Jesus our whole lives. We must not expect anything in return, for Jesus and His disciples do not have anywhere to lay their heads (see Lk 9:58). We must not only give Jesus everything, but we must do it without delay (see Lk 9:59ff). We should not put it off, wait till tomorrow, or do something else first (see Lk 14:18-20). Moreover, disciples of Jesus totally commit themselves to Him forever. There should be no turning back (Lk 9:62).

If we understand what it means to be Christian, we quickly realize that such total love is humanly impossible. However, “nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37). He gives us the grace to love Him as He wants to be loved, and His grace is always sufficient (2 Cor 12:9). Thus, “it is owing to His favor that salvation is yours through faith. This is not your own doing; it is God’s gift” (Eph 2:8).

Therefore, accept Jesus on His terms. His grace is available to you at this moment. By His grace, repent of anything you are putting ahead of being Jesus’ disciple. If you have already accepted Jesus as your Lord, renew your Baptism and share your faith in Jesus with others as soon as possible. A tell-tale sign of being Jesus’ disciple is that you are trying to “make disciples of all the nations” (Mt 28:19).

To be a disciple of Jesus is the zenith of human life. It is the privilege of privileges. Rejoice forever that Jesus has chosen you to be His disciple.

Prayer: Father, give me a disciple's heart. St. Thérèse, pray for me to love Jesus much more deeply.

Promise: "The king granted my requests, for the favoring hand of my God was upon me." —Neh 2:8

Praise: St. Thérèse committed her life to the Lord by giving Him everything moment by moment. She mastered the practice of offering countless little acts of love daily to Jesus.

READY, GET SET, GO
Jesus "set His face to go to Jerusalem." —Luke 9:51, RSV-CE

Jesus “firmly resolved to proceed toward Jerusalem” (Lk 9:51). This was one of the most important decisions in human history. This decision to go to Jerusalem was a crucial moment in God’s plan of salvation, for it ended in Jesus’ saving death and glorious Resurrection.

Immediately after making this decision, Jesus was opposed by Samaritans and had to rebuke Sts. James and John to deliver them from the evil one (Lk 9:53, 55). We likewise face serious problems after we make our most important decisions for Jesus. How many people have been rejected by their friends and co-workers after they have decided to give their lives to Jesus? So many Christians have made the decision to be pure, only to face what seemed to be huge temptations, and even abuse, for trying to live a holy life.

After I had “set my face” toward the vocation of the priesthood, the devil tried to talk me out of it by spotlighting many abuses in the Church. Many Christian couples, after they have “set their faces” toward becoming a holy family, experience financial difficulties. Those who set their faces in obedience to God have unsettling experiences.

Nevertheless, we all must keep our faces set towards God’s will in our life. If we do, we will finally rise from the dead after having suffered and died for love of Jesus. Set your face (see Is 50:7).

Prayer: Father, may I not move to the right or to the left, but be set in Your ways (Dt 5:32; Prv 4:25-27).

Promise: "Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore the favor of the Lord." —Zec 8:22

Praise: St. Jerome spent four years in the desert, learning God's Word in solitude and prayer.

REALITY CHECK - One Bread, One Body, 09/29/2025

REALITY CHECK
"His throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. A surging stream of fire flowed out from where He sat; thousands upon thousands were ministering to Him." —Daniel 7:9-10

Many people have a false impression of angels. They think angels are cute or sweet. This false impression contributes to a skewed view of God and of the entire plan of salvation. Many people think that life in Christ is nice, but not necessary.

The fact is that angels are formidable and even terrifying. The name “Michael” means “Who is like God?” This is an in-your-face challenge to repent and humble yourself. The archangel Gabriel doesn’t tolerate any foolishness. When Zechariah didn’t immediately believe a message from Gabriel, the archangel said to Zechariah: “Now you will be mute — unable to speak — until the day these things take place, because you have not trusted my words” (Lk 1:20). If you don’t talk properly to an angel, you may not talk at all. Moreover, the archangel Raphael doesn’t seem to feel any “warm fuzzies” for us. He bluntly states: “As for me, when I came to you it was not out of any favor on my part, but because it was God’s will” (Tb 12:18).

Angels don’t necessarily make you feel good about yourself. Rather, the true understanding of angels confronts us with reality to check us from making God in our own image and likeness, and thereby warping Christianity past recognition. Believe divine revelation about angels, tremble at God’s Word (Is 66:2), and know that “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb 10:31), for He is a consuming Fire of love (Heb 12:29).

Prayer: Father, on this day give me the fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10).

Promise: "You shall see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." —Jn 1:51

Praise: "Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt Him above all forever" (Dn 3:58).

THE GULF WAR - One Bread, One Body, 09/28/2025

THE GULF WAR
"Between you and us there is fixed a great abyss, so that those who might wish to cross from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross from your side to us." —Luke 16:26

The rich man, traditionally known as Dives, spent eternity staring across a great chasm separating himself from the Lord (Lk 16:26). How ironic! Dives spent his lifetime constructing this chasm (or gulf) to isolate himself from the poor. Now this gulf, built day by day during his life, could not be undone in eternity.

In the USA, many gulfs have been built to isolate the not-so-poor from the poor. We have suburbs, which the poor can’t reach because of distance and low income. We have expensive colleges and professional training, which often serve to exclude those without sufficient income. The high cost of medical insurance often excludes the poor from the treatment they need.

This is not meant so much to criticize those who enjoy these things as it is to make the point that those who have a gulf between themselves and the poor must work harder than ever to bridge that gulf. Charity obliges those with a sufficiency to share with those without (see 2 Cor 8:14). “Woe to the complacent” who do not reach out to the Lazaruses in their midst (Am 6:1).

King Jesus will judge us on our outreach to the poor (see Mt 25:35ff). All Christians are to “be mindful of the poor” (Gal 2:10) and even have “a preferential love” for the poor (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2448). Reach out to the poor. Bridge the gulf now, before you have to stare across it forever.

Prayer: Jesus, You made Yourself poor for My sake (2 Cor 8:9). Give me Your heart, mind, love, and ministry to the poor.

Promise: "Happy he [...who] secures justice for the oppressed, [and] gives food to the hungry." —Ps 146:5, 7

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is meek and humble of heart, yet Lord of the universe and Ruler of all creation. Alleluia!

QUESTION GOD
"They failed, however, to understand this warning; its meaning was so concealed from them they did not grasp it at all, and they were afraid to question Him about the matter." —Luke 9:45

We often question God concerning disappointments, sufferings, and failures. We ask: “Why me?”, “How long?”, “What’s wrong?”, “What can I do?” Yet we are afraid to ask the Lord other questions. He wants us to ask Him about our daily cross (Lk 9:23), not to get out of it but into it. Jesus calls us to ask how we can die to self to bear fruit for His kingdom (Lk 9:24). He motivates us to pray that we may know how to suffer redemptively in “the pattern of His death” (Phil 3:10).

The great saints often questioned God about getting into suffering and finding their joy in it (Col 1:24). Do we grasp the cross at all? (Lk 9:45) Are we afraid to question Jesus about this matter? (Lk 9:45) If we ask the hard question, we’ll get a miraculous answer. We’ll boast with St. Paul of “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal 6:14). We’ll pray with St. Francis: “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.”

Prayer: "Jesus, keep me near the cross. There's a precious fountain."

Promise: "Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day." —Zec 2:15

Praise: St. Vincent de Paul ministered to the poor by forming organizations of charity, appealing to those in power, and loving the poor as a humble pastor of souls.

WHO EXACTLY IS JESUS? - One Bread, One Body, 09/26/2025

WHO EXACTLY IS JESUS?
" 'But you — who do you say that I am?' He asked them." —Luke 9:20

Jesus addressed the twelve apostles, asking them who He was (Lk 9:20). The twelve apostles are the foundation of the Church (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14). So, who does the Church say that Jesus is?

Many people have various experiences of Jesus and have their own opinions about who He is for them. However, the Church, of which Jesus is the Head (Eph 1:22), has gone to great lengths to tell the world objectively Who Jesus is. There is much written in the Catechism of the Catholic Church about what the Church says about Who Jesus is (see sections 422-682 for a sample). The Church is “the pillar and bulwark of truth” (1 Tm 3:15), and possesses and teaches the fullness of truth about Jesus (see Catechism, 889-890). Jesus is Lord, Savior and God, “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Rv 19:16), “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25), and infinitely more.

Jesus has gone to great lengths to reveal Who He is through His Church. He said that those who listen to His apostles and their successors, the bishops of the Church, are listening to Him, and that those who don’t listen are rejecting Him (Lk 10:16).

Do you want to know as much as possible about Jesus, your Lord? Learn what the Church says about who Jesus is. Then love Him even more, with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind (Lk 10:27).

Prayer: Father, "I wish to know Christ" (Phil 3:10). Give me an insatiable thirst for Jesus.

Promise: "My Spirit continues in your midst; do not fear!" —Hg 2:5

Praise: Sts. Cosmas and Damian, brothers and physicians, imitated Jesus, the Divine Physician (Lk 4:23), by travelling throughout the land, treating the sick free of charge, and converting them to belief in the Lord.

THE FULL GOSPEL
"Consider your ways! You have sown much, but have brought in little." —Haggai 1:5-6

Have you worked hard but gotten little out of it except a feeling of discontent? Have you eaten, bought, or consumed a lot but “not been satisfied”? (Hg 1:6) Have you stimulated yourself through drinking, distractions, sexual sin, sports, or entertainment but “not been exhilarated”? (Hg 1:6) Do you have a sense of emptiness and loss?

We can be empty for many reasons. One common reason is that we may have put our concerns before those of God (Hg 1:2-4) and thereby have committed idolatry. “The worship of infamous idols is the reason and source and extremity of all evil” (Wis 14:27). When we go after empty idols, we become empty ourselves (Jer 2:5).

If you want to become fulfilled rather than empty, deny your very self (Lk 9:23) and give your life to Jesus, in Whom absolute fullness resides (Col 1:19). Hunger and thirst for righteousness, and you will be filled (Mt 5:6). Seek first God’s kingdom, not yours, “and all these things will be given you besides” (Mt 6:33). “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). Then, in response to your obedience, Jesus will fill you with the choice wine (Jn 2:10) of the Spirit (Acts 2:4). Jesus emptied Himself (Phil 2:7) to give us life to the full (Jn 10:10). Give your life to Him.

Prayer: Father, I empty myself for love of You. Fill me.

Promise: "The Lord loves His people, and He adorns the lowly with victory." —Ps 149:4

Praise: While Ann was recovering from a broken leg, she accepted God's grace to spend more time in intercession and spiritual reading.

THE SIMPLICITY OF HIS POWER
He "gave them power." —Luke 9:1

When Jesus sent out His twelve apostles, He “gave them power and authority to overcome all demons and to cure diseases” (Lk 9:1). Moreover, He did not allow them to take walking staff, traveling bag, bread, money, and extra clothes (Lk 9:3). Jesus made it clear that power and simplicity were essential to His mission.

Worldly power is often complex. For example, armies, weapons, politics, and the media are all powerful and very complicated. In contrast, power in Christ is often simple. Power in Christ is often based on having less rather than more. Accordingly, the most powerful act in the history of the human race is Jesus’ death and Resurrection. Jesus did this by emptying Himself (Phil 2:7). Jesus lived in poverty (see Lk 9:58) and died having nothing. In weakness God’s power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). “Because of this, God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every other name” (Phil 2:9).

Will you let the Lord make you poor and simple enough to be powerful? Will you believe in the simplicity of His power?

Prayer: Father, give me the courage to radically simplify my life.

Promise: "Thus He has given us new life to raise again the house of our God and restore its ruins, and has granted us a fence in Judah and Jerusalem." —Ezr 9:9

CROWDED
"His mother and brothers came to be with Him, but they could not reach Him because of the crowd." —Luke 8:19

How many of us are crowded? Our lives, minds, and schedules are crowded. We have so many demands pressing in on us. We can hardly breathe. We feel crowded out from Jesus. We can’t seem to reach Him. We feel on the outside looking in (Lk 8:20).

What can we do before we’re crushed by the crowd? We can obey Jesus, hear God’s Word, act upon it (Lk 8:21), and give our lives, minds, and schedules to the Lord. Jesus never gives us more than we have time for. He never overextends us, although sometimes we know this only by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). “There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens” (Eccl 3:1). Jesus gives us sufficient strength (Phil 4:13) for what He has called us to do.

Jesus promises: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you. Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Your souls will find rest” (Mt 11:28-29). Rather than the crowd keeping us from Jesus, He keeps us from the pressure of the crowd.

Prayer: Jesus, may my intimate relationship with You keep me from being crowded.

Promise: "The elders of the Jews continued to make progress in the building, supported by the message of the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah." —Ezr 6:14

Praise: God gave St. Pio the gift of reading hearts, particularly when hearing Confessions.

DESPITE FAILURES
"He puts it on a lampstand so that whoever comes in can see it." —Luke 8:16

Jesus said there were four groups of people in this world. He compared these groups to a footpath, rocky ground, ground that produces briers, and good ground (Lk 8:5ff). Only one of the four groups receives God’s Word so as to bear fruit. This means that we who share God’s Word can expect a lot of failure. This makes us feel like keeping God’s Word to ourselves. Nevertheless, the Lord commands us to put the light of God’s Word on the lampstand of our lives so as to give light to all (Lk 8:16).

The Lord also warns us that if we don’t share His Word, we will lose it (Lk 8:18). If we hear and act on His Word by sharing it, Jesus promises He will consider us to be His mother, brothers, and sisters (Lk 8:21; Mk 3:35). The Lord gives us encouragement to share His Word despite the failure of many to accept it.

Do you love the Lord? Do you love people? Do you know that every person needs to believe in Jesus Christ? Do you also know that “ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ”? (St. Jerome, Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133) People need to hear the Word of the Lord to believe in the Lord (see Rm 10:17). For God’s sake and for love’s sake, share His Word.

Prayer: Father, may love impel me to share Your Word under any circumstances (2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "Everyone...whom God had inspired to do so...prepared to go up to build the house of the Lord." —Ezr 1:5

Praise: Chuck and Lisa have led hundreds of young people to Jesus.

GRACE AND PEACE
"Prayer of this kind is good, and God our Savior is pleased with it, for He wants all men to be saved." —1 Timothy 2:3-4

Jesus died on the cross so that all would be saved from sin, death, and damnation. We are saved by His grace, which we must decide to accept by faith (Eph 2:8) and live in love with all our hearts (see Lk 10:27). The decisions to accept God’s saving graces are the most important decisions of our lives.

These decisions are extremely difficult to make, for we are strongly pressured by the world, the flesh, and the devil to choose pride, pleasure, and selfishness rather than God’s grace and love (see Eph 2:2-3). However, the Lord calls us to “lead undisturbed and tranquil lives in perfect piety and dignity” (1 Tm 2:2). In this context, we are much more likely to repeatedly choose grace and thereby salvation.

Consequently, we must make it a priority to pray for everyone, particularly for godly leaders who will set up a society of peace, tranquility, and respect for human rights (see 1 Tm 2:1ff). We must then submit ourselves to the godly authority of pastors, government leaders, husbands, parents, employers, etc.

Our culture of death sets us up to reject grace after grace by making bad decision after bad decision. However, a civilization of love in which we live “undisturbed and tranquil” lives brings out the best in us as we decide again and again to live in grace. Grace and peace to you (Phil 1:2).

Prayer: Father, show me the relationship between lifestyle and grace.

Promise: "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other or be attentive to the one and despise the other. You cannot give yourself to God and money." —Lk 16:13

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, "King of kings and Lord of lords" (Rv 19:16). Alleluia!

BROKEN FOR THE HARVEST
"The seed on good ground..." —Luke 8:15

Gardeners know that newly tilled soil is necessary for a good harvest. What does that soil look like to a gardener? The soil is completely turned upside-down. It is broken up into clods. Yet such soil is optimal for making seeds sprout and grow.

Have you ever had a broken heart and felt like your life was turned upside-down, inside-out, and plowed over? Even now, are you in constant pain, with your life being one big upheaval? If so, then to Jesus, the Gardener (see Jn 20:15), you look beautiful. You are just like the good soil that has been tilled and worked over, ready for planting.

Right now, decide to offer your upside-down heart and your life full of upheavals to Jesus. You might be able to say with the psalmist: “Upon my back the plowers plowed; long did they make their furrows” (Ps 129:3). Jesus, however, looks at you and sees the potential for a miraculous, abundant harvest (see Mk 4:8). In your brokenness, you are in prime position to be the best soil, if you offer yourself to the Lord as good seedground. He will fertilize, nourish, and water you, caring for you with gentle love (see Lk 13:8). He can use your mixed-up, brokenhearted life to bear great fruit (see Ez 36:34ff). All you need is to guard against hardening your heart and thereby become the worst soil (see Lk 8:12). Offer your brokenness for His harvest.

Prayer: Jesus, make my heart like Yours. May nothing in my life go to waste. Redeem many through my pain.

Promise: God "is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords Who alone has immortality and Who dwells in unapproachable light." —1 Tm 6:15-16

Praise: The blood of the Korean martyrs, who numbered over one hundred canonized saints, has prepared the ground of Korea for a fast-growing Christian population.

THE PRIVILEGE AND COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
"The Twelve accompanied Him, and also some women..." —Luke 8:1-2

When we were baptized, we became disciples of Jesus. Disciples accompany Jesus. They help preach and proclaim “the good news of the kingdom of God” (Lk 8:1). Because Jesus’ disciples have “been cured of evil spirits and maladies” (Lk 8:2), they are eager to use their authority and power from Jesus to heal and free others (see Mt 10:1). Disciples also assist the leaders of the Church out of their means (Lk 8:3). They do not love money (see 1 Tm 6:10); rather, they express their love for God by giving Him their money and themselves. Jesus’ disciples flee from the wicked aspects of the world (1 Tm 6:11). They “seek after integrity, piety, faith, love, steadfastness, and a gentle spirit” (1 Tm 6:11). They “fight the good fight of faith” (1 Tm 6:12) and “take firm hold on the everlasting life to which” they “were called” (1 Tm 6:12).

To live as disciples of Jesus, we must deny our very selves, take up our cross each day, and follow in His steps (Lk 9:23). To be disciples of Jesus, we must put Jesus in a class by Himself and love Him so supremely and uniquely that by comparison we seem to hate everyone else — even our families and ourselves (Lk 14:26). To be disciples of Jesus, we must renounce all our possessions (Lk 14:33).

Make the greatest decision of your life. Decide to live your Baptism and live as a disciple of Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the privilege of being Your disciple and following You even to the cross.

Promise: "Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and a trap. They are letting themselves be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction. The love of money is the root of all evil." —1 Tm 6:9-10

Praise: Several times each year, the blood of the martyr St. Januarius liquefies. This has happened continuously since the thirteenth century.

SERIOUS ABOUT SIN?
"Who is this that He even forgives sins?" —Luke 7:49

Each person who has ever lived on earth, with the exception of Jesus and His mother Mary, has sinned (see Rm 3:23). God, Who is merciful and forgiving, so loved the world that He sent His Son Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners, so that our sins might be forgiven and that we might receive eternal life by believing in Him (see Jn 3:16; Rm 5:8).

Jesus, the Son of Man, has authority on earth to forgive sins (Mt 9:6). He received this authority by obeying His heavenly Father’s plan, leaving heaven, descending to earth, and accepting death by crucifixion to make atonement for all the sins ever committed by sinful humanity. Jesus paid a great price, in horrible agony. He has redeemed us, bought us, purchased us (see 1 Cor 6:20). We are His. He nailed our sins to His cross (Col 2:14) and set us free. He took our guilt and threw it into the depths of the sea (Mi 7:19).

Jesus is serious about forgiving our sins. He wants us to be serious about sin also. Therefore, repent of every sin you have committed. Go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation as soon as possible. Accept God’s forgiveness. “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22). Decide today to live a holy life out of the deepest gratitude for what Jesus has done to forgive and save us.

Prayer: Father, may I take my sins as seriously as Jesus takes them. I will repent and believe the Good News that Jesus died to set me free from the slavery of sin.

Promise: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; prudent are all who live by it." —Ps 111:10

Praise: Morgan hadn't spoken with her father for over a decade. She forgave him for his cruelty during her teenage years, and they experienced a tearful reconciliation.

BEHAVING IN CHURCH
"Know what kind of conduct befits a member of God's household." —1 Timothy 3:15

Jesus speaks of children refusing to respond to happy or sorrowful songs (Lk 7:31-32). The Church in her liturgy is trying to bring about a change of heart, but many won’t let their hearts be touched:

  • The Church attempts to lead us to repentance by a brief penitential rite. However, for some, there is no firm purpose of amendment to prevent future sins, particularly those involving contraception and sexual sin. They think: “I’m not repenting for my actions, however sinful the Church says they are.”
  • The priest exhorts: “Lift up your hearts.” But we may think, “No, I will not allow my heart to be changed by this Mass.”
  • At the elevation of the host, the Church invites us to quietly respond, “My Lord and my God!” (see Jn 20:28) However, surveys indicate that over half the registered Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
  • It is a grave sin for a Catholic to deliberately skip Sunday Mass (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2181). Yet many say by their absence, “No, Mass isn’t important to me.”
  • Church musicians attempt to invoke a response of worship. Some respond like the spoiled children in today’s Gospel, “No, I will not worship God. I’ll keep quiet” (see Lk 7:32).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asked: “What comparison can I use for the men of today? What are they like?” (Lk 7:31) Are our hearts far from Him, offering only lip service? (Mk 7:6) How shall we behave in the household of the living God? (1 Tm 3:15) Will we have a humble and contrite heart (Ps 51:19), attentive to the workings of the Spirit in the Church? Jesus is trying to reach our hearts through His Church. How will we respond to Him?

Prayer: Father, open my heart to You, no matter what it takes.

Promise: "He has given food to those who fear Him." —Ps 111:5

Praise: St. Hildegard was named a Doctor of the Church in 2012.

"WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS?"
"Jesus gave him back to his mother." —Luke 7:15

Jesus “went to a town called Naim” (Lk 7:11). “As He approached the gate of the town a dead man was being carried out, the only son of a widowed mother” (Lk 7:12). Her future appeared bleak; she was alone in the world, with no husband or son to provide for her future. Jesus “was moved with pity upon seeing” this widow grieving her only son (Lk 7:13). Without being asked, “He stepped forward and touched the litter,” raised the dead young man, and gave him back to his widowed mother (Lk 7:14-15).

The Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, was in a situation similar to the widow of Naim. At this point in Jesus’ public ministry, St. Joseph had apparently died, and so Mary was a widow. Mary likewise had only one Son, and He was soon to be put to death. Mary would be left without Joseph and Jesus. Jesus restored the present and future for the widow of Naim by raising her son. As for His mother Mary, Jesus did rise from the dead, but He ascended into heaven, still leaving Mary without a Son on earth to provide for her needs and love her. Jesus gave Mary a new son, the Apostle John (Jn 19:26-27).

Yesterday the Church celebrated the feast of the Sorrowful Mother. Jesus is “moved with pity” for sorrowing mothers (Lk 7:13). Blessed “are the sorrowing; they shall be consoled” (Mt 5:4). Let us love the sorrowing and suffering people in our midst with the compassion and mercy of Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I "weep with those who weep" (Rm 12:15). "Console and gladden them after their sorrows" (Jer 31:13).

Promise: "God has visited His people." —Lk 7:16

Praise: St. Cyprian was told in a vision that he would be beheaded in a year, so he listened to the Holy Spirit and wrote an exhortation to those who would be called to suffer martyrdom.

THE MOTHER OF FORGIVENESS
"Seeing His mother there with the disciple whom He loved, Jesus said to His mother, 'Woman, there is your son.' " —John 19:26

A few moments before Jesus died, He charged His mother Mary to adopt all His disciples for all time, who were represented at the cross by a nameless, beloved disciple (Jn 19:26). In effect, Jesus told Mary to adopt those who were accomplices in His brutal death through their sins. Would you have the love, mercy, and forgiveness to adopt someone who helped torture and murder your son?

Moreover, Jesus told Mary to adopt us at the very time when the results of our sins were literally killing Him. Would you adopt your son’s murderers at the very hour they were murdering him?

Our Lady of Sorrows is the Mother of Sorrows. The Mother of Sorrows is the mother of those who caused her sorrows. She chose to be the Mother of her Son’s murderers, of us who helped kill Him through our sins (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). The Mother of Sorrows and the Mother of her Son’s murderers adopted us when we were least adoptable because she is the Mother of Forgiveness.

Mary, our mother and the Mother of Forgiveness, pray for us to be saved, forgiving, and forgiven.

Prayer: Jesus, give me true devotion to Mary, my forgiving mother.

Promise: "The Lord is the strength of His people, the saving refuge of His anointed." —Ps 28:8

Praise: Our Lady of Sorrows, like her Son, was perfected in God's love and mercy in and through her sufferings (Heb 5:8; cf Lk 2:48).

CROSS-FIRE
"Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in Him." —John 3:14-15

“When I behold the wondrous cross on which the King of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride.” These words from a traditional hymn are my prayer for you today.

May you see in a new way the cross and the One Who hung and died on it for love of you. May the cross be a prophecy which penetrates, divides, and judges the thoughts and reflections of your heart (Heb 4:12). Through the cross, may you be crucified to the world and the world to you (Gal 6:14). May this celebration of the Exaltation of the Cross be the occasion for breakthroughs in the hearts of millions throughout the world and breakdowns of the strongholds of the evil one (see 2 Cor 10:4). Today, may Jesus, Who has been lifted up on the cross, draw all people to Himself (Jn 12:32).

“Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore His sacred name.”

Prayer: Father, may my life be accurately described as the triumph of the cross.

Promise: "At Jesus' name every knee must bend in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth, and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God the Father: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!" —Phil 2:10-11

Praise: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world."

THE FUTURE FLOODS
"He may be likened to the man who, in building a house, dug deeply and laid the foundation on a rock." —Luke 6:48

Our lives are like houses which are about to face the tremendous force of floods. Only the houses with solid foundations will stand (Lk 6:48). We are well founded if we hear and do God’s Word (Lk 6:47). We must lay no “foundation other than the one that has been laid, namely Jesus Christ” (1 Cor 3:11). We must also be founded on the Body of Christ, the Church, which is founded on the apostles and the prophets (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14).

We build the solid foundation for our lives by giving our lives to Jesus and living our Baptisms fully. We must also be like Jesus and love the Church so much that we give up our lives for her (Eph 5:25). To have a solid foundation, we must know what the bishops, the successors of the apostles, have taught throughout the world over the centuries. Then we are able to be in submission to their authority. We must listen especially to the Pope (see Mt 16:18), who has a prophetic ministry and who, with the bishops, discerns the authenticity of prophecies.

Foundations are usually built years before floods hit. Build the foundation of your life now. Build it to withstand anything (see Mt 7:24-25).

Prayer: Father, the rivers are rising, but by Your grace I am not afraid.

Promise: "You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." —1 Tm 1:15

Praise: St. John Chrysostom began reforming his archdiocese by reforming the archbishop's household.

GOD'S DOUBLE STANDARD
"Because I did not know what I was doing in my unbelief, I have been treated mercifully." —1 Timothy 1:13

Jesus has a double standard in working with people. He is lenient with the unbeliever. He continues to pray: “Forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34). “These were enemies of Your servants, doomed to death; yet, while You punished them with such solicitude and pleading, granting time and opportunity to abandon wickedness, with what exactitude You judged Your sons” (Wis 12:20-21).

However, there’s discipline for the believer (Heb 12:6-7). “The slave who knew his master’s wishes but did not prepare to fulfill them will get a severe beating, whereas the one who did not know them and nonetheless deserved to be flogged will get off with fewer stripes. When much has been given a man, much will be required of him” (Lk 12:47-48).

The Lord must be strict with us, His disciples, so we will spread His salvation to the ends of the earth. He must get the plank out of our eyes so we can “see clearly enough to remove the speck” from our brother’s eye (Lk 6:42). “The season of judgment has begun, and begun with God’s own household” (1 Pt 4:17).

Even though the Lord is stricter with believers, now is still the time of mercy. Later, there will not be the combination of mercy and judgment we experience on this earth, but only judgment. The season of mercy will be over. Before it’s too late, repent. You’re first.

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to motivate me to confess my sins as soon as possible in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Promise: "I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, Who has strengthened me, that He has made me His servant and judged me faithful. I was once a blasphemer." —1 Tm 1:12-13

Praise: "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior" (Lk 1:46-47).

THE DISTINCTIVE MARK OF A CHRISTIAN
"To you who hear Me, I say: love your enemies." —Luke 6:27

What if your family was a victim of a terrorist attack? What if someone robbed and beat you? Jesus tells us to treat terrorists, murderers, rapists, and robbers in a certain way. Jesus commands us to:

  • love our enemies (Lk 6:27),
  • “do good to those who hate” us (Lk 6:27),
  • “bless those who curse” us (Lk 6:28),
  • “pray for those who maltreat” us (Lk 6:28),
  • even remain vulnerable to our enemies (Lk 6:29),
  • give to them (Lk 6:30),
  • do to them as we would have them do to us (Lk 6:31),
  • lend to them “without expecting repayment” (Lk 6:35), and
  • be clothed in mercy and forgiveness toward all people, especially our enemies (see Col 3:12-13; Lk 6:36-37).

If we do so, we will heap burning coals of love on our enemies (Rm 12:20; see Lk 15:20ff).

To those not baptized into Jesus, His commands seem unjust, preposterous, and impossible; but Jesus died on the cross for His enemies. He literally practiced what He preached. He taught us to pray that we are forgiven as we forgive our enemies (Mt 6:12), and He promises us grace sufficient to forgive and love our enemies immediately and totally. By Jesus’ grace, receive and perform the miracle of forgiveness and of love for all your enemies.

Prayer: Father, give me a forgiveness and love inexplicable except in the light of Jesus.

Promise: "Over all these virtues put on love, which binds the rest together and makes them perfect. Christ's peace must reign in your hearts." —Col 3:14-15

Praise: Al, a non-Catholic, happened to stop in to a Catholic Church the same evening a Eucharistic procession was occurring. As the monstrance neared the pew where he had sat, an awe came upon him and he dropped to his knees in worship. He converted to Catholicism soon afterward.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
"You must put that aside now...put aside your old self with its past deeds and put on a new man, one who grows in knowledge as he is formed anew in the image of his Creator." —Colossians 3:8, 9-10

Today’s Eucharistic readings address two opposite ways of life. St. Paul calls these two ways the “old self” and the “new self” (see Col 3:9-10). The old self is our life without Jesus, ruled by the world, the flesh, and the devil (see 1 Jn 2:16). This old self lives a lifestyle characterized by anger, malice, insults, lying, evil desires, lust (Col 3:5, 8-9), the desires for pleasure and the things of this world (Lk 6:24-26). The new self is shaped entirely by allowing Jesus to form our actions, thoughts, words, and lifestyle. When we live in the new self, we are set free from sin and set free for service, worship, and evangelization.

Those who live according to the new self are blessed; those who live under the old self have nothing to anticipate but woes (see Lk 6:20-26). In Baptism, our old self died with Christ, drowned in the waters of Baptism. Yet our lives after Baptism sometimes seem like a civil war (see Jas 4:1). We want to live a good and holy life for the Lord, yet we sin (see Rm 7:7-25).

The key is to daily live our Baptism. Each time you bless yourself with holy water, that is, the water of Baptism, renew your baptismal vows and pray: “I am a baptized child of Almighty God! Lord Jesus, drown my old self with You in this holy water. Help me put on the pure, victorious garments of my new self that lives in You. May I live the new life of blessings and not the old life of woes.”

Prayer: Father, "I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me" (Gal 2:19-20).

Promise: "Set your heart on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God's right hand." —Col 3:1

Praise: Lisa made a decision to praise God every day in all circumstances.
