PREPARATION DAY
"It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep." —Romans 13:11

A thief preparing to break into your house wants to take your possessions (see Mt 24:43). Jesus, our Lord and King, also is preparing to enter your house, even standing and knocking at your door (Rv 3:20). First, He desires to have fellowship with you. Then, if you allow, He desires to take possession of your life and your home. He wants to be Lord of everything in your life. We prevent the thief from entering by making our house secure, but are we also guarding our possessions and hearts so strongly that we are preventing Jesus from entering?

Jesus says that even if we are prepared for His coming, we will be surprised at the timing (see Mt 24:36; 25:5). Accordingly, the best way to be prepared for the coming of Christ is to be prepared today. Make Him Lord of your house right now. “The time is short” (1 Cor 7:29). “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Mt 3:3).

Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us (Jn 14:2-3). We likewise are to be preparing a place for Jesus, so that He can dwell in our hearts, homes, work, and lives. Are we “on our guard” about some things, but completely off guard about the more important things, like the Second Coming of Christ?

The measure we measure with shall be measured back to us (Mt 7:2). When Jesus knocks on our door, if we tell Him, “I do not know where You come from. Depart from me” (see Mt 7:23; Lk 13:27), we should not be surprised if Jesus says the same to us when we knock on His door on Judgment Day (Mt 25:11-12). Therefore, prepare for His coming now (Mt 24:44).

Prayer: Father, I will put my secular Christmas preparations on hold until I have prepared for the coming of Your Son, Jesus.

Promise: "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of the flesh." —Rm 13:14

Praise: All hail, King Jesus! Reign over this new year. Alleluia!

ALCOHOLICS UNANIMOUS
"Be on guard lest your spirits become bloated with indulgence and drunkenness and worldly cares." —Luke 21:34

Tomorrow we begin the season of Advent. Therefore, be on guard lest your hearts become loaded down with a headache, drunkenness, and life’s cares (see Lk 21:34). In this warning, Jesus seems to be describing a spiritual drunkenness and a spiritual hangover. Although we may not be physically drunk, we may frequently get intoxicated by indulging our senses. We can become spiritually drunk by staring at our phone or a TV for hours; smoking a few cigarettes; snacking for hours; watching videos; reading magazines; listening to music for an extended time; surfing the Internet for awhile; playing video games for a long time; or getting a caffeine fix by drinking cup after cup of coffee and can after can of caffeinated soft drinks, with an occasional candy bar. We can also get spiritually drunk without over-stimulating our senses. We can consume shot glass after shot glass of bitterness, unforgiveness, self-pity, fear, self-hatred, or anxiety.

Therefore, to be ready for Jesus’ final coming, we should repent of our sins, drastically simplify our lifestyles, forgive those who have sinned against us, be healed, and make every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor 10:5). “Live soberly” (1 Pt 1:13; 5:8).

Prayer: Father, train us "to reject godless ways and worldly desires, and live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age as we await our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of the great God and of our Savior Christ Jesus" (Ti 2:12-13).

Promise: "The kingship and dominion and majesty of all the kingdoms under the heavens shall be given to the holy people of the Most High, Whose kingdom shall be everlasting: all dominions shall serve and obey Him." —Dn 7:27

Praise: Praise You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for showering us with Your love.

LITTLE BIG HORN
"This horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly." —Daniel 7:8

In Daniel’s vision, the horn that sprang from the fourth beast was the Seleucid kingdom (Dn 7:8). The big mouth of the little horn was King Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This man was so arrogant (see Dn 7:11) that, after a reign of mass murder, terror, and torture (see 1 Mc 1:54-63), he remarked about what a nice guy he was (1 Mc 6:12). King Antiochus would feel at home with us today, for arrogance is rampant in our society. There is a raging battle within the secular culture to pressure the Church to compromise its teaching to accommodate artificial contraception, homosexual activity, or abortion. Also, over half of Catholics disagree with the Church’s teaching on the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Are we mocking God? (see Gal 6:7)

The Lord’s judgment on our arrogance is: “All you can do is make arrogant and pretentious claims. All such boasting is reprehensible” (Jas 4:16). “The haughty eyes of man will be lowered, the arrogance of men will be abased, and the Lord alone will be exalted, on that day. For the Lord of hosts will have His day against all that is proud and arrogant, all that is high, and it will be brought low” (Is 2:11-12). “God ‘is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness’ ” (1 Pt 5:5; Prv 3:34). Repent of arrogance and submit to God’s Word and His Church.

Prayer: Father, may I close my mouth and open my ears.

Promise: "The heavens and the earth will pass away, but My words will not pass." —Lk 21:33

Praise: Jesus healed José of cancer.

THE COURAGE TO PRAY ANYWHERE
"Men rushed in and found Daniel praying and pleading before his God." —Daniel 6:12

The Babylonian government passed a law forbidding true prayer. Daniel broke the law repeatedly and publicly (Dn 6:11). Some contemporary governments have passed laws forbidding prayer completely or in certain places and on certain occasions. Also, there are various tyrannical, unwritten laws forbidding public prayer at work, even at home, or in other social situations. We need to be like Daniel and break the law repeatedly and publicly. Let us prayerfully and joyfully go into the lion’s den (Dn 6:17).

We must not compromise on the necessity and right to pray always (Lk 18:1), for prayer is communication with God, Who is the Love of our lives. We should either die praying or be rescued from death by the power of prayer (see Acts 12:5ff). The Lord commands us: “Never cease praying” (1 Thes 5:17). There is “the necessity of praying always and not losing heart” (Lk 18:1).

Therefore, pray always. Pray courageously and publicly. Pray together and individually. Pray in marriages, families, schools, factories, and offices. Pray on streets and on the phone. Pray where people don’t pray. Pray “in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health.” Pray when you understand God and when you don’t. Pray when your prayers don’t seem to be answered. Pray in darkness, dryness, and confusion. Pray always.

Prayer: Father, may I break new ground in prayer.

Promise: "When these things begin to happen, stand erect and hold your heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand." —Lk 21:28

Praise: When someone asks Sylvia to pray for them, she not only commends that person to God in prayer privately, but offers to pray for them "on the spot."

At this time of year, the world is obsessed with “Holiday” shopping events for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Church, however, has a different focus. The liturgical year comes to a close this Saturday, and a new Church Year begins with Advent this Sunday. The Church focuses upon being prepared (Mt 24:44)for the comings of Jesus at Christmas, at the hour of our death, and in His Second Coming.

Tomorrow, in the USA, people will celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving with feasting and the drinking of alcohol. Some of these gatherings will feature a “drunken show” (see 1 Sm 1:14) similar to that which occurred at King Belshazzar’s blasphemous party (see Dn 5:1ff). Belshazzar’s life ended that night (Dn 5:30); he had no further time to repent of his blasphemous acts and undo the damage he caused during his drunken binge.

The Church is likewise throwing a Thanksgiving Day party tomorrow which features holy vessels, wine, celebration, feasting, and the memorial of the death of the host (see Dn 5:1-4). It’s called the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Mass features the Eucharist, a word which means “Thanksgiving.” Throughout the world, some families will begin their Thanksgiving gatherings with Mass and end with prayers of thanksgiving and praise. Tomorrow and all days, be under the influence of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:25) and not under the influence of any worldly substance. Give thanks the Church’s way instead of the world’s way.

Prayer: Father, may they who give thanks to You be many and may they bring greater glory to You (2 Cor 4:15).

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." —Lk 21:19

Praise: William, a young father with six children, launched an annual Men's Conference which ministers to over a thousand Catholic men with godly teaching, Mass, and Adoration.

SOCIAL INSECURITY
"The great God has revealed to the king what shall be in the future; this is exactly what you dreamed, and its meaning is sure." —Daniel 2:45

Nebuchadnezzar had a vision representing the destruction of the Babylonian, Median, Persian, and Hellenistic empires (Dn 2:31ff). Hundreds of years of world history were reduced to nothing. Jesus expressed a similar revelation concerning the Temple. He prophesied that the five-hundred-year-old Temple would be utterly destroyed, with not one stone left on a stone (Lk 21:6). This prophecy was fulfilled in detail in 70 A.D., less than forty years after Jesus announced this shocking revelation.

There’s no security in military power, the governments of the world, or the most prodigious wealth. There’s no security in social security or even in religious organizations. We must pray with the psalmist: “Only in God be at rest, my soul, for from Him comes my hope. He only is my Rock and my Salvation, my Stronghold; I shall not be disturbed”’ (Ps 62:6-7).

We must totally give our lives to Jesus. Thus we will “build a secure foundation for the future, for receiving that life which is life indeed” (1 Tm 6:19). In His Word, the Lord promises: “The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed or delivered up to another people...and it shall stand forever” (Dn 2:44). We can count on having nothing to count on but the Word of God.

Prayer: "I love You, O Lord, my Strength, O Lord, my Rock, my Fortress!" (Ps 18:2-3)

Promise: "But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth." —Dn 2:35

Praise: St. Catherine of Alexandria's debating skills led the Church to designate her the patron saint of philosophers and lawyers.

"She from her want has given what she could not afford — every penny she had to live on." —Luke 21:4

Father Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, often wrote on these pages, “If Jesus is not Lord of all, He’s not Lord at all” in your life. While he was alive, we often called him “Father All,” for he preached so often on giving your all to Jesus.

Daniel and his three friends trusted the Lord with all their livelihood, even in a foreign land (Dn 1:8ff). The Gospel widow (Lk 21:2), like the widow in Zarephath (1 Kgs 17:12ff), also gave everything to the Lord’s service (see Dn 1:5). Jesus, Mary, and Joseph gave all. Jesus even gave His body, “to be given for you” and me (Lk 22:19). Being Jesus’ disciple means giving all, and trusting the Lord for all.

Ananias and Sapphira held back from giving all, but wanted to appear as if they were giving all (Acts 5:1-11). They would not trust the Lord with their lives, and so they lost their lives (Lk 9:24; Acts 5:5, 10). It’s frightening to think of giving all (see Mt 19:21ff). However, Jesus is “all in all” (1 Cor 15:28). He is not outdone in generosity. In Christ, we have everything (1 Cor 3:21-23). Ask the Lord for all the graces necessary to give Him “all that [you] have” (Mk 12:44).

Prayer: Father, from the very depths of my soul I joyfully surrender all to You.

Promise: "Blessed are You, O Lord, the God of our fathers, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever." —Dn 3:52

Praise: St. Andrew Dung-Lac, a priest, was martyred in Vietnam, along with 116 others in the eighteenth century. They so desired to share their faith in Jesus that they even trusted Him to the point of allowing their blood to be shed (Heb 12:4).

KING JESUS
"There was an inscription over His head: 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' " —Luke 23:38

On this last Sunday of the Church year, we totally commit our lives to Jesus and acknowledge Him as our King and the King of kings (Rv 19:16). Like the good thief, we may have ignored Jesus’ kingship for years or even for our entire lives, but we can repent today. When with contrite hearts we say, “Jesus, remember me when You enter upon Your reign” (Lk 23:42), Jesus will also reply to us: “I assure you: this day you will be with Me in paradise” (Lk 23:43).

Today we can make or renew a commitment to Jesus, which will have eternal significance. Some people think they don’t need to commit their lives to Jesus. They are “good people” who go to church, pray, and have decent morals. Yet all this is only part of being a subject of King Jesus. He rightly demands not just people who are good, prayerful, and decent but people who are begotten from above (Jn 3:3), new creations (2 Cor 5:17), and children of God (Jn 1:12).

To be born again, be made new, and become children of our heavenly Father, we must be baptized into King Jesus (Rm 6:3) and live that new life by faith. This faith will be expressed in total commitment of our lives to King Jesus.

Prayer: King Jesus, thank You for the ultimate privilege of being Your subject. I give all to You.

Promise: "He rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Through Him we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins." —Col 1:13-14

Praise: All praise to You, Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords! All hail, King Jesus! Alleluia!

SIN-SEARED
"Now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land." —1 Maccabees 6:13

Antiochus died a miserable death, “seized with excruciating pains in his bowels and sharp internal torment” (2 Mc 9:5). “The body of this impious man swarmed with worms, and while he was still alive in hideous torments, his flesh rotted off, so that the entire army was sickened by the stench of his corruption” (2 Mc 9:9). Scripture comments that Antiochus died in this way because of the atrocities he committed against the chosen people (2 Mc 9:5-6). For example, “women who had had their children circumcised were put to death, in keeping with the decree, with the babies hung from their necks” (1 Mc 1:60). Yet after these brutal mass murders and after defiling the Temple, Antiochus wrote a letter characterizing his reign as mild, kind, and loving (2 Mc 9:26; 1 Mc 6:12).

This shows the human person’s immense capacity for self-deception. A human being can act like a merciless dictator and still consider himself a great humanitarian. Sin blinds us to being blind. We can crucify Jesus and His followers and “claim to be serving God” (Jn 16:2). People can ruthlessly dismember helpless babies in the womb and say they’re preventing child-abuse. To prevent self-deception, shedding innocent blood, and receiving the deadly wages of sin, we must repent and confess our sins now.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for I know not what I'm doing (see Lk 23:34).

Promise: "God is not the God of the dead but of the living. All are alive for Him." —Lk 20:38

Praise: St. Cecilia died a slow, painful martyr's death. Although she couldn't talk due to the pain, she is said to have died giving witness to her faith, holding out three fingers, one for each person of the Blessed Trinity.

TAKE IT BACK
"On the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled [the temple], on that very day it was reconsecrated." —1 Maccabees 4:54

A friend of mine joyfully celebrates the yearly anniversary of being sober. This is a good celebration. But could you imagine a repentant Christian observing the anniversary of the day they first got drunk? To observe such a day, it would have to be “transformed” and consecrated by Jesus (Rm 12:2). The day would then be a memory of victory rather than failure and regret (1 Mc 4:59).

What Judas Maccabeus did is to reclaim the day of the temple’s defilement by purifying the temple on that very same day of its worst disgrace (1 Mc 4:54). No longer would that day be a holiday on the calendar of the kingdom of darkness; it would become a day of triumph for the kingdom of God.

What was the worst day of your life? What bad days can you allow Jesus to redeem? Offer to Jesus your bad days. The Lord plans to restore the devastated parts of your life, “the years which the locust has eaten” (Jl 2:25). Give Him permission to purify them and turn them to the good (see Rm 8:28).

The Lord wants to reconsecrate more than bad days. Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Cor 6:19), the special dwelling places of God. Reconsecrate your body to the Lord. Let Jesus cleanse your body and rededicate it. Make your body a house of prayer (see Is 56:7).

Prayer: Jesus, my Redeemer, I will no longer let evil rule my memories. I offer my failures and defeats to You. Turn them into Your trophies.

Promise: "My house is meant for a house of prayer." —Lk 19:46

Praise: Mary, Our Lady of Presentation, was presented to the priests in the temple at age three and lived in the temple for nearly a decade. Hearing the Scriptures proclaimed daily, she, the "Mother of the Word Incarnate," knew the Word of God intimately.

ZEAL
"When Mattathias saw him, he was filled with zeal; his heart was moved and his just fury was aroused; he sprang forward and killed him upon the altar." —1 Maccabees 2:24

The Lord in His Word commends Mattathias (1 Mc 2:24-26), Phinehas (Ps 106:30-31), and many others for their zeal. Mattathias shouted: “Let everyone who is zealous for the law and who stands by the covenant follow after Me!” (1 Mc 2:27) Jesus Himself epitomized the words of Scripture: “Zeal for Your house consumes Me” (Jn 2:17; Ps 69:10). Zeal for the law, God’s house, and His kingdom marks a disciple of Jesus.

In the new covenant, however, zeal is not primarily directed toward people. Our battle is not against human forces but against the devil (Eph 6:12). Because of our zeal, we no longer put others to death, but let them kill us if necessary for witnessing to Jesus. This does not mean we are passive. No, we are zealous, militant, extremely active, yet not violent. Zeal expressed violently plays right into the devil’s hands. When we act and react violently, we let ourselves be duped by the devil into working for his kingdom. “Without knowledge, even zeal is not good; and he who acts hastily, blunders” (Prv 19:2).

In contrast, zeal for Jesus’ kingdom is zeal as He is zealous. Our weapons of victory are truth (Jn 8:32), goodness (Rm 12:21), and love (1 Cor 13:8), if we have the faith and zeal to use them.

Prayer: Father, because of my apathy, millions are murdered through abortion, starvation, and injustice. Give me holy zeal.

Promise: "Thereupon he fled to the mountains with his sons, leaving behind in the city all their possessions. Many who sought to live according to righteousness and religious custom went out into the desert." —1 Mc 2:28-29

Praise: The Martinez family writes thanksgivings to God and puts the slips of papers in a jar. Periodically, they gather to read the papers and praise the Lord for His goodness.

REAL FAITH
"Seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king." —2 Maccabees 7:1

The members of this family were maimed, scalped, amputated, fried, and murdered one by one while the remaining family members were forced to watch. This family’s courage was supernatural. The basis of their courage was faith in God, our Creator and our Resurrection. At his death, the second brother said: “You are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever” (2 Mc 7:9). The third brother proclaimed that God, Who created his hands and tongue, would re-create them after they had been amputated. The fourth brother said: “It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to life by Him” (2 Mc 7:14).

Throughout these tortures and murders, the mother exhorted her sons: “Since it is the Creator of the universe Who shapes each man’s beginning, as He brings about the origin of everything, He, in His mercy, will give you back both breath and life” (2 Mc 7:23). The mother spoke these words to the last son to die: “I beg you, child, to look at the heavens and the earth and see all that is in them; then you will know that God did not make them out of existing things; and in the same way the human race came into existence. Do not be afraid of this executioner, but be worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that in the time of mercy I may receive you again with them” (2 Mc 7:28-29). The mother believed in the resurrection because of her faith in God the Creator. Is our faith in God, the Creator and the Resurrection, abstract or is it so real and personal we would die for it?

Prayer: Father, by faith may I conquer kingdoms (Heb 11:33).

Promise: "Whoever has will be given more, but the one who has not will lose the little he has." —Lk 19:26

Praise: Jane experienced a profound renewal of the Holy Spirit in her life when she began attending daily Mass.

THE SPIRIT AND THE END
"Lo, the day is coming." —Malachi 3:19

As we near the end of the world, “there will be great earthquakes, plagues, and famines in various places — and in the sky fearful omens and great signs. But before any of this, they will manhandle and persecute you” (Lk 21:11-12). “You will be delivered up even by your parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. All will hate you because of” Jesus (Lk 21:16-17). “Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire” (Mal 3:19).

How will we save our lives on this last day? We will be saved:

“by patient endurance” (Lk 21:19),
by humility and repentance from pride (Mal 3:19),
by doing God’s will and not evil (Mal 3:19), and
by fearing God’s name (Mal 3:20).

How will we have the power to be patient, persevering, humble, repentant, God-serving, and God-fearing? The power comes not by our might, nor by our power, but by the Spirit (Zec 4:6). Jesus has given us another Paraclete (Jn 14:16), the Holy Spirit, Who will guide us (Jn 16:13) through life, death, and even the end of the world. Ask that the Holy Spirit be stirred into flame in your heart (2 Tm 1:6-7). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to convict me of sin (Jn 16:8).

Promise: "But for you who fear My name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays." —Mal 3:20

Praise: Jesus is risen! We will be raised from the dead (see Jn 6:40). Alleluia forever!

FOR EXAMPLE
"This is how he died, leaving in his death a model of courage and an unforgettable example of virtue not only for the young but for the whole nation." —2 Maccabees 6:31

One of the main ways of maturing in Christian life is by example. We should imitate Christ and imitate others as they imitate Christ (1 Cor 4:16; 11:1). We should be models of courage and unforgettable examples of virtue both in life and death.

Jesus is our Example in setting an example. He said at the Last Supper shortly before He died: “What I just did was to give you an example: as I have done, so you must do” (Jn 13:15). St. Peter said: “It was for this you were called, since Christ suffered for you in just this way and left you an example, to have you follow in His footsteps” (1 Pt 2:21). St. Paul told St. Titus: “In everything set them an example by doing what is good” (Ti 2:6-7). Paul told St. Timothy the same: “Be a continuing example of love, faith, and purity to believers” (1 Tm 4:12).

Paul also set an example for being an example: “Not that we had no claim on you, but that we might present ourselves as an example for you to imitate” (2 Thes 3:9). He said: “Be imitators of me, my brothers. Take as your guide those who follow the example that we set” (Phil 3:17).

Our example is the first Bible most people read, the only one some will ever read. “Be examples to the flock” (1 Pt 5:3).

Prayer: Jesus, I'm sorry for taking Your name and then failing to show Your sanctity by misrepresenting You (see Nm 20:12).

Promise: "Jesus said to him: 'Today salvation has come to this house...the Son of Man has come to search out and save what was lost.' " —Lk 19:9-10

Praise: St. Rose could never master the language of the American Indians that she served. She learned to touch their hearts by her life of prayer. They called her "Woman-who-prays-always" (see Lk 18:1).

MENTAL GYMNASTICS
"He authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles. Thereupon they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom." —1 Maccabees 1:13-14

King Antiochus Epiphanes defiled the Temple by erecting “the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts” (1 Mc 1:54). “Any scrolls of the law which they found they tore up and burnt” (1 Mc 1:56). “Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death, in keeping with the decree, with the babies hung from their necks; their families also and those who had circumcised them were killed” (1 Mc 1:60-61). “Terrible affliction was upon Israel” (1 Mc 1:63).

The beginning of such abominations, sacrileges, and persecutions was the building of a gymnasium. For the Greeks, a gymnasium was not only a place for recreation but also for socialization. At a Greek gymnasium, young men were introduced not only to sports but also to homosexual practices, pagan philosophy, and secular politics. The effect of this multi-faceted exposure to half-truths, confusions, and lies was the undermining of the true faith. The Jews at the gymnasium “covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing” (1 Mc 1:15).

Today, the true faith is again being undermined, and we are preparing the way for unspeakable abominations. This is partially accomplished through the sports-entertainment mega-systems. This may be the modern counterpart to the Greek gymnasium. Pray with the blind man of Jericho: Lord, “I want to see” (Lk 18:41).

Prayer: Father, let me see our culture of death the way You want me to see it.

Promise: "At that very moment he was given his sight and began to follow Him, giving God the glory." —Lk 18:43

Praise: St. Elizabeth loved the sick and so built a hospital at the foot of her castle.

GIVING GOD NO REST
"This widow is wearing me out. I am going to settle in her favor." —Luke 18:5

God wants intercessors to wear Him out, just like the persistent widow was wearing out the corrupt judge (Lk 18:5). Isaiah prophesies that God wants intercessors to never be silent “by day or by night,” giving Him “no rest” in their diligent intercession (see Is 62:6-7). Jesus Himself said in today’s Gospel passage that the Father wants to do justice for those “who call out to Him day and night” (Lk 18:7). In the next verse, Jesus links persistence with the kind of faith He is looking for (Lk 18:8).

Why does the Lord, Who knows all we need before we ask (Mt 6:8, 32) and Who tells us not to rattle on like the pagans (Mt 6:7), also tell us to wear Him out in intercession and persist in faithful prayer day and night? One reason is certainly because He is looking for obedient faith that perseveres. The one who perseveres to the end will be saved (see Lk 21:19).

Sometimes intercession takes all day to be successful (see Ex 17:12ff). Sometimes we must intercede for months or even years. Jesus wants us to persevere. May He never have to ask us: “Why did you falter?” (see Mt 14:31)

Prayer: Father, I do believe You hear and answer prayer. Grant me the grace, faith, fortitude, and love to be an intercessor who trusts You and perseveres.

Promise: "He led forth His people with joy; with shouts of joy, His chosen ones." —Ps 105:43

Praise: God gave St. Albert the Great an extraordinary intelligence. Albert diligently developed this gift and sought knowledge to "build up the souls of others with it."

NO EXCUSE
"Not even these are pardonable." —Wisdom 13:8

At first the writer of Wisdom makes excuses for those who seek the creatures rather than the Creator. On second thought, however, he questions: “If they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its Lord?” (Wis 13:9) Scripture gives no excuse for not finding God.

Some people try to excuse themselves by saying the person and plan of God are not clear. “In fact, whatever can be known about God is clear to them; He Himself made it so. Since the creation of the world, invisible realities, God’s eternal power and divinity, have become visible, recognized through the things He has made. Therefore these men are inexcusable” (Rm 1:19-20).

It’s always been popular to excuse ourselves because of heredity or background. For example, some try to justify sin by saying they were abused as children or their fathers were alcoholic. Although these people should be treated with compassion, they should not use their pain as an excuse for sin, but as all the more reason to receive God’s healing love.

There’s no excuse for sin. God’s “grace has far surpassed” evil (Rm 5:20). The Lord will give us a way to overcome all temptations (1 Cor 10:13). His grace is always sufficient (2 Cor 12:9).

Prayer: Jesus, what am I waiting for? May I abandon my life to You.

Promise: "As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They ate and drank, they took husbands and wives, right up to the day Noah entered the ark." —Lk 17:26-27

Praise: Thomas was so patient with his boss that the boss was moved to conversion and faith in Jesus.

"The reign of God is already in your midst." —Luke 17:21

The world is a mess. Surely a number of us who read this would be happy if Jesus returned in His Second Coming right now to bring us who live for Him into the kingdom of God forever.

Well, in today’s Gospel, Jesus has a message for us: “I am here! The kingdom of God is here and is already among you” (see Lk 17:20-21). Jesus is cleaning up the mess of this world, and His plan is to clean it up by using us as His instruments. Do we want the messes of this world to be cleaned up badly enough to embrace the daily cross Jesus has placed before us and follow Him through redemptive suffering?

Jesus is here! The kingdom of God is here, and is already among us. Jesus is with us, even to the ends of the earth (Mt 28:20). Now our calling is to sit daily at His feet and listen to His words (Lk 10:39). Hear the message of Jesus. He is here, and that is “enough” (2 Cor 12:9). “Be content with what you have” (Heb 13:5): the presence of Jesus in your midst. Follow Jesus (Jn 21:19). His grace is sufficient (2 Cor 12:9-10).

Prayer: Lord, "speak, for Your servant is listening" (1 Sm 3:10). You are the Potter and I am the clay in Your hands (Is 64:7). Use me as You see fit to help build Your kingdom.

Promise: "For there is nought God loves, be it not one who dwells with Wisdom." —Wis 7:28

Praise: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, known affectionately as Mother Cabrini, wanted to be a missionary to China. Pope Leo XIII, however, sent her from her native Italy to the United States to minister to thousands of immigrants. She established over sixty schools, hospitals, and orphanages.

KNOW THANK-YOU OR NO THANK-YOU?
"Was there no one to return and give thanks to God except this foreigner?" —Luke 17:18

Jesus healed ten lepers and taught us that:

We have a lot to be thankful for.
Most of us are probably not thankful much of the time.
Those who are thankful are often not the ones we expected to be thankful (see Lk 17:16).
Thankfulness is an act of faith (Lk 17:19).
Thankfulness can be a way of receiving salvation from Jesus (see Lk 17:19).

Because of Who God is and what love He has given us, the Lord commands us to:

“Render constant thanks” (1 Thes 5:18).
“Give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph 5:20).
“Enter His gates with thanksgiving” (Ps 100:4).

Jesus died for you. Thank Him by living for Him. Happy “Thanks‑living!”

Prayer: Father, may thanksgiving take precedence over selfishness.

Promise: "Desire therefore My words; long for them and you shall be instructed." —Wis 6:11

Praise: St. Josaphat was renowned at leading people to Jesus and His Church. His enemies called him the "Thief of Souls."
