One is the loneliest number

Source: The Alternative
At certain times and to varying degrees, we all detest being alone. To avoid
its pain, we turn the car radio on or the television 'just for company'.
Perhaps we resist solitude because of what we may discover about ourselves;
we fear being alone will reveal the insecurities which lurk deep within. If
we have unresolved issues, loneliness demands that we listen to their voices
and recollections.

Their sounds however, are like those of unwelcome guests, so we try to
silence them by frantic activity, loud music or energetic pastimes.

Even the most reclusive, anti-social of people look for something in the
clamour of their personal quietness, finding no comfort in the company of
others, they despise the presence of their own.

Being alone is a most necessary part of life, it is in the stillness that we
confront our inner demons and fears; if we never confront them, we can never
hope to defeat them.

Physical activity brings us into contact with the reality of the external
world, but it is solitude that we discover the reality of the interior.

It is only ever in times of alone-ness that we see our undisguised
nakedness, it is during silence that we gain access to the quiet secret
chamber of the depth of our being. Times of being alone will always arise.

Our busy-ness will forever be punctuated by occasions of quietness and
loneliness; these times of solitude are God-given occasions which possess
great potential.

If they are not used constructively, such occasions will be resented; we
will waste these moments, and we will never become real people. Take
advantage of these times - even create them; they are transforming because
they yield new insights, character development and maturity.

It is during these moments that we hear God speaking to us, and leading us
to new life.
