ABBA

"This will prove that you are sons of your heavenly Father." -Matthew 5:45

In this time of Lent, the Church emphasizes more than ever the command: "In a word, you must be made perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5:48). Like our Father, we must show love practically even to our persecutors and enemies (Mt 5:44-45).
Lent is traditionally a time of God the Father confirming His love for us as His sons and daughters. Before Jesus was led into the desert by the Holy Spirit (Mt 4:1), He heard His Father say: "This is My beloved Son. My favor rests on Him" (Mt 3:17). In the desert, Satan tempted Jesus to doubt that He was the beloved Son of God (Mt 4:3, 6). Jesus overcame these temptations and was confirmed in His Father's love. During this Lent we, like Jesus, will be tempted to doubt the Father's love for us. Yet we will be given the grace to overcome these temptations and to believe more than ever in the Father's infinite love for us.
The Holy Spirit will grace us with confirmation of our Father's love through our Lenten penances. Therefore, "keep your deeds of mercy secret, and your Father Who sees in secret will repay you" (Mt 6:4). "Whenever you pray, go to your room, close your door, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, Who sees what no man sees, will repay you" (Mt 6:6). "When you fast, see to it that you groom your hair and wash your face. In that way no one can see you are fasting but your Father Who is hidden; and your Father Who sees what is hidden will repay you" (Mt 6:17-18). Live a Lent in which you trust God the Father completely and let Him father you in simple, practical ways. Let the Holy Spirit cry out in your heart, "Abba" ("Father") (Gal 4:6; Rm 8:15).

Prayer: Abba, give me humble faith to be secure in Your love.

Promise: "Provided you keep all His commandments...you will be a people sacred to the Lord, your God." -Dt 26:18, 19

Praise: Martin studied Hebrew and visited the Holy Land in order to understand the Scriptures more deeply.

TODAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME - One Bread, One Body, 2/27/2015

TODAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

"Lose no time." -Matthew 5:25

"All's well that ends well." "If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all My statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die" (Ez 18:21). The "good thief" lived a miserable life, but ended well and was in paradise with Jesus on the day they both died (Lk 23:43).
Because our ending is all-important, some people wait until the end to convert to Jesus. This is a serious mistake. "Delay not your conversion to the Lord, put it not off from day to day; for suddenly His wrath flames forth; at the time of vengeance, you will be destroyed" (Sir 5:8-9). If we truly want to die with Christ, why wouldn't we want to live with Him as soon as possible? Imagine waiting till you're almost dead to marry someone! Your marriage would not have time enough to break up, but you would have lost years of married love. When you give your life to Jesus, your only regret will be that you didn't do it sooner.
The best way to die in Christ is to live in Him. How can you persevere if you haven't started or are reluctant to start? "Lose no time" (Mt 5:25). "Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" (2 Cor 6:2) Now, at this moment, give your whole life to the Lord.

Prayer: Father, may I not miss another minute of life with You.

Promise: "If you bring your gift to the altar and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift at the altar, go first to be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift." -Mt 5:23-24

Praise: Hearing how three sisters agreed to give up candy for a year for their ailing father, Marsha was inspired to renew her fasting efforts.

FORMING AN ASK-FORCE - One Bread, One Body, 2/26/2015

FORMING AN ASK-FORCE

"Ask, and you will receive. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you. For the one who asks, receives." -Matthew 7:7-8

Some ingenuous Bible preachers and teachers have tried to expound on the differences between asking, seeking, and knocking. However, all three commands probably mean the same thing. Jesus is simply and repeatedly commanding us to ask, ask, and ask. Are we getting the message? If so, then why does Jesus keep repeating Himself?
Most of us ask God for a thing or two. Yet it may be that He wants us to ask Him for hundreds or thousands of things. Jesus told His apostles: "Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full" (Jn 16:24). The writer of the book of James bluntly stated: "You do not obtain because you do not ask" (Jas 4:2).
Jesus wants us to ask more - not because He won't give without our asking, but because He wants us to communicate with Him more. He calls us to abide in Him (see Jn 15:5, 7), to live in His presence. He does not call us to ask out of selfishness but out of love (Jas 4:3). He wants us to share every detail of our lives with Him. He wants to be our Life (see Phil 1:21; Gal 2:20).
Constantly asking Him means constantly loving Him and living in Him. Ask Love (1 Jn 4:16). Ask Life (Jn 14:6; Jn 11:25). Ask Jesus.

Prayer: Father, this Lent teach me to ask as Your child.

Promise: "Save us by Your power, and help me, who am alone and have no one but You, O Lord. You know all things." -Est C:25

Praise: Jesus delivered Rob from the desire to smoke.

(To grow in prayer, order our book, "Conversion-Conversations". This book is written in the format of daily conversations with God for forty weeks. By faithfully praying the "conversation" each day, you will grow in confidence of God's personal love for you.)

CONNECT THE DOTS - One Bread, One Body, 2/25/2015

CONNECT THE DOTS

"Every man shall turn from his evil way." -Jonah 3:8

The people of Nineveh, wicked as they were, made the connection between their sins and the destruction to come. These people frequently brutalized and butchered large numbers of people. They were pagans, spiritually dead, the least likely to repent. Yet the prophetic word pierced their hearts, and they repented. Jesus commended them for this (Lk 11:32).
We fancy ourselves more sophisticated than the ancient Ninevites. We specialize in knowing connections, such as the connection between cholesterol and heart disease, drinking alcohol and liver disease, sanitation and the prevention of infection, physical health and mental health, etc. Yet we, in our "advanced" culture, miss the all-important connection between sin and damnation.
Our culture misses the connections between sexual sin and spiritual guilt, consumerism and lack of concern for the poor, contraception and the breakdown of marriage and family, relativism and the shortage of vocations, etc. Our culture specializes in missing the connection between Jesus and forgiveness of sin. So many act like the Pharisee, thinking they are OK with God while failing to know what acts are sinful, or even failing to know that they are sinners (Lk 18:11-12). If we were making these connections, the Confession lines in our churches would be full every week.
Jesus came to save sinners like us. All we need to do is make the connection that we are sinners and He is our Lord, Savior, and Redeemer. Repent!

Prayer: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner" (Lk 18:13).

Promise: "A heart contrite and humbled, O God, You will not spurn." -Ps 51:19

Praise: Realizing an unforgiveness in her life was stifling the Holy Spirit, Nancy went to Confession and was set free.

THE WORD FOR LENT - One Bread, One Body, 2/24/2015

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

Isaiah 55:10-11, Psalm 34:4-7, 16-19, Matthew 6:7-15
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022415.cfm

THE WORD FOR LENT

"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but shall do My will, achieving the end for which I sent it." -Isaiah 55:11

God's Word does not return void but achieves the end for which it is sent. Because God's Word is always "living and effective" (Heb 4:12), it is "more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces" (Ps 119:72). Therefore, we should read and share God's Word daily (Acts 17:11), for ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ (Catechism, 133, St. Jerome).
This Lent, may God's Word find a home in your life. "Humbly welcome the word that has taken root in you, with its power to save you" (Jas 1:21). Like Jesus, use God's Word to resist the temptations of Satan (Lk 4:4, 8, 12). Abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31). Soak in it, and let yourselves be purified "in the bath of water by the power of the word" (Eph 5:26). Delight in the Word of the Lord and meditate on it day and night (see Ps 1:2). "Keep this book of the law on your lips. Recite it by day and by night, that you may observe carefully all that is written in it; then you will successfully attain your goal" (Jos 1:8). This Lent, prepare for Easter by taking a long walk with Jesus as He interprets for you "every passage of Scripture which [refers] to Him" (Lk 24:27). A Lent in God's Word is a Lent in God's will - a Lent of a lifetime.

Prayer: Father, this Lent may Your Word burn in me and purify me (Lk 24:32).

Promise: "Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us the wrong we have done as we forgive those who wrong us." -Mt 6:11-12

Praise: Several pre-teens and teenagers join with a group of adults to faithfully prepare One Bread, One Body for mailout. The book you are currently reading may have been provided to you through the love of a teenager.

(Easter is approaching. To abide in the Word, order our leaflet, "Through the New Testament in Easter".)

POOR PLANNING - One Bread, One Body, 2/23/2015

Monday, February 23, 2015, St. Polycarp

Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18, Psalm 19:8-10, 15, Matthew 25:31-46
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022315.cfm

POOR PLANNING

"I assure you, as often as you did it for one of My least brothers, you did it for Me." -Matthew 25:40

The Lord says that you shall not "stand by idly when your neighbor's life is at stake" (Lv 19:16). The Lord says: "I assure you, as often as you did or did not provide for the needs of the least of your brothers and sisters, you did or did not do it for Me" (see Mt 25:40, 45). The Lord expects us to recognize the Lazaruses at our doors (Lk 16:19ff) and "love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it" (1 Jn 3:18). We are to see Jesus in the poor, love and serve the poor, and even be in solidarity with the poor.
This means that we must listen to the teachings of the Church. Pope John Paul II taught that we should "carry out a sincere review of [our] lives regarding [our] solidarity with the poor" (Mission of the Redeemer, 60). We must imitate Jesus and have a preferential love for the poor (Catechism, 2448). St. John Chrysostom insisted: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." St. Gregory the Great taught: "When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice" (Catechism, 2446).
The Church through the centuries echoes: "Love the poor in Jesus; love Jesus in the poor."

Prayer: Father, this Lent may I give alms to the extent that my lifestyle changes significantly.

Promise: "Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord." -Lv 19:18

Praise: St. Polycarp, a student of St. John the Evangelist for nearly sixteen years, was one of those early Christians honored by God to give his life in martyrdom for his King.

PM eNewsletter 1st Sunday of Lent

February 22nd, 2015 1st Sunday of Lent

Jesus, many times we have given up things for lent, but still remained
the same in heart.

So this year Jesus, give us the grace to understand what You want us to
give up, so that we can truly be freed from the bondage of past hurts,
that we may have caused to others, or that others did to us.

Let this lent cause a cleansing of heart, so that when you rise again
on Easter morn, we also will rise anew with You.

Let us all search our hearts, and see if Your throne room is clean and
in order, for Your coming this resurrection day.

Grace us to be willing to give up anything that is stopping our hearts
to be a palace of love for You and others.

Let us truly make the declaration, that only in You Christ, will life
ever be worth living.

Open us Jesus, please open us.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=2/22/2015

"He stayed in the wasteland forty days...He was with the wild beasts."
-Mark 1:13

Mark's Gospel was written around 70 A.D., and is believed to have been
written in Rome. At that time in Rome, it was not uncommon for
Christians to be thrown into an arena with hungry wild beasts, such as
lions and tigers, to be martyred by being devoured by them.

Can you imagine how the early Christians of Rome must have been
encouraged to hear that Jesus dwelt in safety among the wild beasts?
(Mk 1:13) Jesus not only survived being in the presence of the wild
beasts, but apparently lived in peace with them. The prophet Isaiah
announced that in Jesus the wild beasts will likewise live in peace
with all creation (see Is 11:6-8). The Lord in His power can shut the
jaws of the wild beasts to protect His holy ones (Dn 6:23). In fact,
in Daniel's case, the wild beasts eventually destroyed the human
beasts (Dn 6:25).

Today we're always facing the wild beasts of the godless secular
culture, economic tyranny, government attacks on religious freedom,
and so on. Satan is prowling around like a roaring lion, that is, a
wild beast, looking for someone to devour (1 Pt 5:8).

When Jesus was with the wild beasts, He was not alone. The Spirit
was with Him, and angels of God ministered to Him (Mk 1:12-13). The
Lord can save us from the jaws of the wild beasts, human, animal, or
spiritual (see 2 Tm 4:17). Nothing, not even wild beasts, can
separate us from the love of Jesus (Rm 8:39).

Prayer: "In God I trust without fear; what can flesh do against me?"
(Ps 56:12)

Promise: "Good and upright is the Lord; thus He shows sinners the
way." -Ps 25:8

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! Your first act after You rose from
the dead was to offer Your disciples peace and reconciliation
(Jn 20:19, 23). Praise You, Jesus, "rich in mercy" (Eph 2:4).

Lord Jesus may I not spiritualize fasting and take away its essential
material element. May I not spiritualize Christianity and forget its
fundamental, incarnational essence. For " the spiritual was not first;
first came the natural and after that the spiritual" ( 1 Cor 15:46 ).
May I have both a natural and a spiritual Lent. May my Lent be as
physical as growling stomachs, hunger pains, and lost weight. May Lent
then be as spiritual as repentance, reconciliation in relationships,
and total commitment to the Lord. In this Lent, may I both offer my
body as a living sacrifice and be transformed by the renewal of your
mind ( Rm 12:1-2 ). In Jesus name I pray Amen.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE SICK AND SUFFERING

SOLIDARITY WITHOUT JUDGMENT

Wisdom of the heart means showing solidarity with our brothers and
sisters while not judging them... True charity is a sharing which
does not judge, which does not demand the conversion of others; it
is free of that false humility which, deep down, seeks praise and
is self-satisfied about whatever good it does.

LOOK AT JESUS

Job's experience of suffering finds its genuine response only in the
cross of Jesus, the supreme act of God's solidarity with us,
completely free and abounding in mercy.

TURN TO MARY

O Mary, Seat of Wisdom, intercede as our Mother for all the sick and
for those who care for them! Grant that, through our service of our
suffering neighbors, and through the experience of suffering itself,
we may receive and cultivate true wisdom of heart.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - One Bread, One Body, 2/22/2015

Sunday, February 22, 2015, First Sunday of Lent

Genesis 9:8-15, 1 Peter 3:18-22, Psalm 25:4-9, Mark 1:12-15

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

"He stayed in the wasteland forty days...He was with the wild beasts." -Mark 1:13

Mark's Gospel was written around 70 A.D., and is believed to have been written in Rome. At that time in Rome, it was not uncommon for Christians to be thrown into an arena with hungry wild beasts, such as lions and tigers, to be martyred by being devoured by them.
Can you imagine how the early Christians of Rome must have been encouraged to hear that Jesus dwelt in safety among the wild beasts? (Mk 1:13) Jesus not only survived being in the presence of the wild beasts, but apparently lived in peace with them. The prophet Isaiah announced that in Jesus the wild beasts will likewise live in peace with all creation (see Is 11:6-8). The Lord in His power can shut the jaws of the wild beasts to protect His holy ones (Dn 6:23). In fact, in Daniel's case, the wild beasts eventually destroyed the human beasts (Dn 6:25).
Today we're always facing the wild beasts of the godless secular culture, economic tyranny, government attacks on religious freedom, and so on. Satan is prowling around like a roaring lion, that is, a wild beast, looking for someone to devour (1 Pt 5:8).
When Jesus was with the wild beasts, He was not alone. The Spirit was with Him, and angels of God ministered to Him (Mk 1:12-13). The Lord can save us from the jaws of the wild beasts, human, animal, or spiritual (see 2 Tm 4:17). Nothing, not even wild beasts, can separate us from the love of Jesus (Rm 8:39).

Prayer: "In God I trust without fear; what can flesh do against me?" (Ps 56:12)

Promise: "Good and upright is the Lord; thus He shows sinners the way." -Ps 25:8

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! Your first act after You rose from the dead was to offer Your disciples peace and reconciliation (Jn 20:19, 23). Praise You, Jesus, "rich in mercy" (Eph 2:4).

WALKING INTO GLORY - One Bread, One Body, 2/21/2015

Isaiah 58:9-14, Psalm 86:1-6, Luke 5:27-32

WALKING INTO GLORY

"Then you shall delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth." -Isaiah 58:14

We are on the fourth day of a forty-day journey through the desert of Lent. Our destination is the celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead. When we meet the risen Christ in a new way this Easter time, "light shall rise" for us "in the darkness, and the gloom shall become" like midday (Is 58:10). "Then the Lord will guide" us always and give us "plenty even on the parched land" (Is 58:11). "The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt" for our sakes and "the foundations from ages past" we shall raise up (Is 58:12). " 'Repairer of the breach,' they shall call" us, " 'Restorer of ruined homesteads' " (Is 58:12).
Yes, this Easter season will be more than we could ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). Isaiah's prophecies from over 2,500 years ago will be fulfilled again. The risen Christ's love and glory will be so greatly manifested this Easter that it would be too much for us if we had not prepared our hearts through our Lenten repentance, fasting, penance, and prayer. Because Easter is so great, Lent is so necessary. Enter fully into Lent.

Prayer: Father, make me ready for anything as I grow in holiness this Lent more than ever before.

Promise: Jesus "said to him, 'Follow Me.' Leaving everything behind, Levi stood up and became His follower." -Lk 5:27-28

Praise: St. Peter Damian's faith enabled him to fight against scandals in the priesthood that were occurring over a thousand years ago.

(To help you observe Lent more deeply, order our book, "Scriptural Stations of the Cross", and our leaflets "A Prophetic Lent", "Lent and the Renewal of Our Baptismal Promises", "The Secret of Fasting", and "The Secret of Confession".)

PULLING A FAST ONE

"Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?" -Isaiah 58:5

Fasting is limiting our intake of food in obedience to God for the building of His kingdom. It may involve eating nothing, eating a little less, or eating plainer, less tasty foods. Although the Lord often calls us to cut back significantly in eating, fasting is not a matter of quantity but obedience. For instance, to fast severely when God is calling us to something else is not pleasing to Him.
A Lenten fast is a little different than another fast. The Lenten fast is an intentional imitation of Christ as He fasted forty days in the desert. Thus, the purpose of a Lenten fast is to be united with Christ and to grow in a deep, personal relationship with Him.
On this Friday, the third fast day of Lent, the Church obliges the Catholics of the world to unite by abstaining from meat. This simple expression of unity encourages all of us to persevere in fasting and to fast with our focus on unity - unity with all the Catholics of the world and especially with Jesus. "Would that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high!" (Is 58:4)

Prayer: Jesus, may I be in communion with You when I eat Your flesh and drink Your blood (Jn 6:56). May I also receive communion with You and Your people when I fast.

Promise: "When the day comes that the Groom is taken away, then they will fast." -Mt 9:15

Praise: As he fasted, Robert had more prayer distractions, health changes, and interruptions than before. He persevered and grew much closer to Jesus.

A LIFE-GIVING LENT? - One Bread, One Body, 2/19/2015

A LIFE-GIVING LENT?

"I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life." -Deuteronomy 30:19

On this second day of Lent, the Lord tells us that Lent is a matter of life or death. Because of what we let the Lord do in us last Lent, some babies, poor people, and elderly people are alive today who would have been killed in our culture of death. Conversely, it is possible that because of our resistance to God's grace last Lent, some attacks on life which could have been stopped are continuing to plague us.
Moreover, Lent is a matter of everlasting life or death. The Lord is working through us this Lent in a special way so that all people will be saved (see 1 Tm 2:4). By loving the Lord, "walking in His ways, and keeping His commandments" (Dt 30:16), we will be used by the Lord this Lent to lead many into God's kingdom. However, if we refuse to deny ourselves and take up Jesus' cross each day (see Lk 9:23), we may defeat God's plan for ourselves and others (Lk 7:30). Therefore, have the Lent of a lifetime. May this Lent deepen greatly your love for the Father of life. This Lent, choose life.

Prayer: Father, may I die like a grain of wheat so that I will bring forth abundant life (see Jn 12:24).

Promise: "Whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. What profit does he show who gains the whole world and destroys himself in the process?" -Lk 9:24-25

Praise: Ed made a daily habit of listening for God's voice. One day in a business meeting, Ed felt God tell him that he must go home immediately. He dropped everything and returned to his home. His house was located on the seashore, and he arrived just in time to save his wife, who was caught in a riptide and was being carried out to sea.

HOME ALONE - One Bread, One Body, 2/18/2015

HOME ALONE

"Yet even now, says the Lord, return to Me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; rend your hearts." -Joel 2:12-13

Because we are all members of Christ's Body and therefore need each other (1 Cor 12:12ff), we must not absent ourselves from the assembly (Heb 10:25). Instead, we should "call an assembly; gather the people, notify the congregation; assemble the elders" (Jl 2:15-16). God the Father wants His family together. Jesus prays that we would be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). The Holy Spirit makes us one body (1 Cor 12:13).
As essential as it is for us to live in Christian community, there is nonetheless a danger in communal life. In Christian community, we are tempted to serve the Lord because everybody else is doing it, to go with the flow of the crowd. However, we must not go along with the crowd but with the Lord. We must serve the Lord because of our personal, interior commitment to Him, regardless of what anyone else is doing.
Would you receive an ashen cross on your forehead today if you were the only one willing to publicly declare yourself a sinner and a penitent? If you were to be mocked or even persecuted for the ashes on your forehead, would you wash them off? Do you stand up for Jesus, even in those situations when you stand alone?
As Christians, we need community. However, Christian community needs to be made up of persons who are individually committed to Jesus. May this Lent be both communal and individual.

Prayer: Father, for love of You, may I stand together when possible and alone when necessary.

Promise: "Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" -2 Cor 6:2

Praise: Praise the Holy Spirit, Who leads us into the desert with the Son to find the Father.

BLINDING SPEED

"Are your minds completely blinded? Have you eyes but no sight?" -Mark 8:17-18

Jesus was appalled at His disciples' spiritual blindness. They were blinded to the significance of the two multiplications of the loaves and fishes. They were blinded to Who Jesus was. This blindness would eventually lead His disciples to abandon Jesus on Calvary.
Spiritual blindness caused Jesus' death on the cross. It caused the Third Reich, the Holocaust of six million Jews, slavery for centuries, and countless other atrocities. Spiritual blindness causes starvation, racism, the sexual abuse of children, mass murder from abortion, etc.
Spiritual blindness is caused by the god of the present age (2 Cor 4:4) and by our complicity with the evils of this god of selfishness and secular humanism. Spiritual blindness is caused by sin. The darkness of sin blinds us (1 Jn 2:11), blinds us to being blind (Jn 9:40), and causes us to blind ourselves (see Is 29:9). Whole nations, cities, and even churches (see Rv 3:17) can become spiritually blind.
Jesus has divided the world into two groups - those going blind and those receiving sight (Jn 9:39). Repent, go to Confession, and let Jesus heal you of blindness.

Prayer: Father, through my monthly celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, restore my sight and keep me from going spiritually blind.

Promise: "Noah found favor with the Lord." -Gn 6:8

Praise: The Servite founders honored God in their service and gave their hearts to Him and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

THE BEST OR THE REST?

"Abel, for his part, brought one of the best firstlings of his flock." -Genesis 4:4

Both Cain and Abel brought offerings to the Lord. God accepted Abel and his offering, but He did not look with favor on Cain and his offering. Although we don't know the details of this event, Scripture does provide us with a clue into what God looks for in a sacrifice. Abel brought to the Lord his "best" (Gn 4:4). Cain simply brought "an offering" (Gn 4:3).
The Lord repeatedly emphasizes offering the best we have, without blemish (see Lv 1:10). What we give to the Lord should be as perfect as we are capable of making it. The prophet Malachi bluntly accused priests who offered tarnished sacrifices of despising the Lord (Mal 1:6ff). These priests kept the best lambs for their own meals, and burned the weak, blind, and lame ones as offerings to the Lord, in opposition to the command of the law of Moses. Malachi says to those who offered these half-hearted, self-seeking sacrifices: "Present it to your governor; see if he will accept it, or welcome you" (Mal 1:8).
Would our boss be happy to receive the same quality we give to the Lord, Who created our boss? Do we give our best time to our jobs, recreation, TV, and friends, and then give God the leftovers? Give the Lord your best, and He will multiply the rest (see Mal 3:10).

Prayer: Father, I give You my life, my energies, my entire will.

Promise: "If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master." -Gn 4:7

Praise: Louise greets each dawn with praise. She obeys the psalm: "From the rising to the setting of the sun is the name of the Lord to be praised" (Ps 113:3).

PM eNewsletter Sixth Sunday in ordinary time

February 15th The Sixth Sunday in ordinary time

This week oh! Jesus, we begin Lent.

Jesus, help us to make this Lent truly a time of conversion and
the start of a new and deeper relationship with You.

Let us really see, through You, what we have to give up or get
rid of from our lives.

Let us give up whatever is keeping us from truly being one in You.

Let Your light of love open our hearts so that we may see You as
our Lord, God, and King of Kings.

Let this Lent truly be the beginning of a new life of love and service.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/15/2015

"The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 'If someone has on his skin a scab
or pustule or blotch which appears to be the sore of leprosy, he shall
be brought to Aaron, the priest.' " -Leviticus 13:1-2

Do you have a spiritual scab, pustule, or blotch? Do you need inner
healing? A scab is a past hurt beginning to heal but still a touchy
subject. You feel like picking at it or at a certain person and opening
the wound once again. Don't touch the scab. Don't reverse the healing
process.

A pustule is an effect of spiritual infection. You may be infected with
unforgiveness, resentment, bitterness, or anger. The pus from these
wounds may be reaching a head. How many times have we innocently started
to talk to others when suddenly they burst forth in a fit of rage,
resentment, and bitterness? Their pustule broke.

A blotch is like an allergic reaction. Did you ever bring up a subject
to which others were allergic? Suddenly there's a tension in the room
and a changed tone of voice. The conversation turns ugly.

These scabs, pustules, and blotches need healing. "Moved with pity, Jesus
stretched out His hand, touched him, and said: 'I do will it. Be cured.'
The leprosy left him then and there, and he was cured" (Mk 1:41-42).

Prayer: "Heal me, Lord, that I may be healed; save me, that I may be
saved, for it is You Whom I praise" (Jer 17:14).

Promise: "Whether you eat or drink - whatever you do - you should do all
for the glory of God." -1 Cor 10:31

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who still carries the nail wounds as a sign of His
great love for us.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2015-01.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE SICK AND SUFFERING

"GREAT PATH"

And yet, what a great path of sanctification this is! In those difficult
moments we can rely in a special way on the closeness of the Lord, and
we become a special means of support for the Church's mission.

"HOLY TIME"

Wisdom of the heart means being with our brothers and sisters. Time spent
with the sick is holy time. It is a way of praising God Who conforms us
to the image of His Son, Who "came not to be served but to serve, and to
give His life as a ransom for many" (Mt 20:28).

"OUR WORLD FORGETS"

Occasionally our world forgets the special value of time spent at the
bedside of the sick, since we are in such a rush; caught up as we are in
a frenzy of doing, of producing, we forget about giving ourselves freely,
taking care of others, being responsible for others,. Behind this
attitude there is often a lukewarm faith which has forgotten the Lord's
words: "You did it unto Me" (Mt. 25:40).

DAILY GRIND OR DAILY BREAD? - One Bread, One Body, 2/14/2015

DAILY GRIND OR DAILY BREAD?

"By the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat." -Genesis 3:19

When God created the human race, He gave us dominion over all creation (Gn 1:28). Created things did not resist us but were in perfect harmony with us. Working the land was a pleasure, not a burden. We didn't have to struggle to provide food for ourselves.
After we sinned, we changed and the world changed. We and the rest of creation were no longer in harmony. For the first time there was such a thing as bad weather, sick people, and dangerous wild animals. Work became a drag, yet a necessity, not a pleasing re-creation. We had to sweat to get food (Gn 3:19) and had to struggle to survive. The ground was cursed because of us (Gn 3:17). Sometimes it brought forth only thorns and thistles (Gn 3:18), no matter how hard we had worked. Human beings were hungry and starving for the first time.
Then Jesus came and told us that the Father would provide our daily bread (Mt 6:11), and we could now work for Jesus (Col 3:23) rather than for perishable food (Jn 6:27). Jesus is "the Bread of life" (Jn 6:35). He can multiply a few loaves and fish to feed thousands of people (Mk 8:9). He can change bread and wine into His Body and Blood. He has removed the curse of sin. Jesus is Lord of all creation.

Prayer: Jesus, I accept You as my Bread, Creator, Recreator, Savior, Redeemer, Lord, Life, and God.

Promise: "Those who had eaten numbered about four thousand." -Mk 8:9

Praise: Sts. Cyril and Methodius, who were brothers, created the Slavonic alphabet and translated the Bible and the liturgy into Slavonic, bringing the light of the gospel to the Slavic nations.

ANSWER THE FALL - One Bread, One Body, 2/13/2015

Friday, February 13, 2015

Genesis 3:1-8, Psalm 32:1-2, 5-7, Mark 7:31-37
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021315.cfm

ANSWER THE FALL

"The woman answered the serpent." -Genesis 3:2

We read today's first reading and we want to shout: "Oh, Eve! Flee from the serpent! Don't give him the time of day. Oh, Adam! Don't eat it! Throw the fruit away!"
Through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, we have inherited a world polluted with sin and death (Rm 5:12). It's so tempting to want to put all the blame on Adam and Eve: "Now look what you've done. You messed up the whole world and now we have to live in your mess. It's all your fault." Yet that is exactly what Adam did: he shifted the blame from himself to Eve (Gn 3:12). Eve took her cue from Adam and shifted the blame to the serpent (Gn 3:13).
We have inherited a fallen nature from our first human parents, Adam and Eve. It's in our spiritual genes, and we can't help it. We are programmed to sin, and then to blame others for the consequences. But God is rich in mercy: He sent His only Son, Jesus, into the world to conquer sin and death. Jesus came to redeem us from our sins. Through His obedience, all of us can become just (Rm 5:19). We rejoice with the words of the Easter Vigil liturgy: "O happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!"
Adam and Eve shifted the blame onto others. We have done the same. God, however, has shifted the weight of our sins onto Jesus. Give your fallen nature to Jesus, and receive His risen life.

Prayer: "I confess my faults to the Lord" (Ps 32:5). "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner" (Lk 18:13).

Promise: "Their amazement went beyond all bounds: 'He has done everything well! He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!' " -Mk 7:37

Praise: Jesus healed Laura of a tumor in her neck.

STRIKE THE ORIGINAL MATCH - One Bread, One Body, 2/12/2015

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Genesis 2:18-25, Psalm 128:1-5, Mark 7:24-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021215.cfm

STRIKE THE ORIGINAL MATCH

"The Lord God said: 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.' " -Genesis 2:18

God created a suitable partner for Adam, the first man. This partner was so perfect a match for Adam that he could call her "bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh" (Gn 2:23). Eve literally completed Adam's flesh; she was created out of the missing piece of Adam's body, his rib. In becoming one with Eve, Adam's missing piece (Gn 2:21) was restored and they were both made whole.
A young person who has discerned the call to a married vocation should ponder these words: "Are you free of a wife (or husband)? If so, do not go in search of one" (1 Cor 7:27). God has created a suitable partner for you. The key to beginning your married vocation is to allow God to put you and your suitable partner together. God's Word tells you not to search for a spouse. Just continually seek to serve God in your present state in life, and allow him to bring your future spouse into your life (see Mt 6:33). God is extremely talented and creative in matchmaking. His only hindrance is when we get impatient, choose our own spouse, and do not wait for Him to unfold His perfect plan.
For those who are already married, if your marriage is less than perfect, it's tempting to wonder if you jumped the gun and married the wrong person. Reflect on this passage: "Are you bound to a wife (or husband)? If so, do not seek your freedom" (1 Cor 7:27). Jesus can make all things new (Rv 21:5). He performed his first miracle at a wedding, changing the empty into the full and beautiful, far surpassing the quality of what existed before (Jn 2:1ff). Even now, God can make you into suitable partners.

Prayer: "Teach me, Lord, to wait" for Your perfect timing.

Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways!" -Psalm 128:1

Praise: Joan quietly asked the Lord to give her rose petals as a sign that she should marry Bill. The next day, her sister gave her a bag full of them.
