I'M DYING TO BE MARRIED
"When people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but live like angels in heaven." -Mark 12:25
Once while attending a men's retreat, the above passage was read for the Gospel during Mass. As the priest proclaimed that people do not marry in heaven, a man near me, who had been married nearly forty years, exclaimed, "Thank God!" Of course, this remark elicited a few chuckles among the nearby men.
Tomorrow's readings focus on the beauty of love and marriage, but today's readings focus on death and marriage. An insult from his wife, who was merely responding to his own unjust accusation (Tb 2:14), drove Tobit to the brink of death (Tb 3:6). Sarah had seven husbands die on seven wedding nights (Tb 3:8). In today's Gospel, the Sadducees illustrate marriage using a series of failures and deaths (Mk 12:19ff).
A marriage full of life takes two "dead" people. Each spouse has died to themselves (Jn 12:24). They carry around in their bodies the dying of Jesus so the life of Jesus may be revealed in them (2 Cor 4:10). In dying so completely to self, each spouse learns their true identity (Mt 10:39) and becomes fully alive. The husband empties himself of his desires and sacrifices his life out of love for his wife (Eph 5:25). The wife subordinates herself to her husband, ordering her life around his plans (Col 3:18). This mutual dying to self opens the floodgates of love.
Too many Christian marriages are "among the living dead" (1 Jn 3:14). Marriages often die because one or both spouses couldn't "die." Die to yourself; live and love abundantly (Jn 10:10).
Prayer: Father, we offer You our lives.
Promise: "He is the God of the living, not of the dead." -Mk 12:27
Praise: St. Justin, the first Christian philosopher, defended the Faith and died as a martyr for Jesus.

LATE, GREAT PENTECOSTS
"Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit." -Luke 1:39-41
About two weeks ago, the Lord gave you the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost. Did you receive the gift of the Spirit? If so, you are acting as Mary did. You're probably visiting people to share with them Jesus in you. As you do this, they too are filled with the Spirit.
Pentecost is contagious. It is catalytic. One Pentecost leads to another. 120 people received the Holy Spirit the morning of the first Christian Pentecost, and by evening 3,000 had received the Spirit (Acts 1:15; 2:41). Pentecost is a movement with momentum. This is how the Spirit renews the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).
If you are out of the upper room, moving in the Spirit, and visiting, don't stop. Witness for Jesus right where you are and eventually to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
If you are still in the upper room, ask Mary to visit you so that you can get into the Acts of the Apostles. Consider this feast day a visitation and an opportunity for late, great Pentecosts. Come, Holy Spirit, again and again!
Prayer: "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior" (Lk 1:46-47).
Promise: "Do not grow slack but be fervent in spirit; He Whom you serve is the Lord." -Rm 12:11
Praise: Mary's "Magnificat" has been prayed in the liturgy daily since before the year 502.

LOVING YOUR CHILD'S MURDERERS - One Bread, One Body, 5/30/2016

LOVING YOUR CHILD'S MURDERERS
"It was the Lord Who did it and we find it marvelous to behold." -Mark 12:11
The owner of a vineyard sent slave after slave "to the tenants to obtain from them his share of produce from the vineyard" (Mk 12:2). "Some they beat; some they killed. He still had one to send - the son whom he loved. He sent him to them as a last resort, thinking, 'They will have to respect my son' " (Mk 12:5-6). "Then they seized and killed him and dragged him outside the vineyard" (Mk 12:8). The owner of the vineyard seems astoundingly naive for continuing to send slaves to almost certain beatings or death and then send his own son to be killed.
In this allegory, the owner of the vineyard represents God the Father. He sent prophet after prophet to turn us away from our sins. Almost all of these prophets were rejected. Many were murdered. Then God the Father sent His Son. Unlike the owner of the vineyard in the allegory, God the Father knew for certain that His Son, Jesus, would be tortured, nailed to a cross, and murdered. Nevertheless, He sent Jesus so that all could be saved from sin and death, and some would be saved.
If you knew a person would be party to killing your child, would you send your child to him? Would you create a person whom you knew would drive a nail into your child or imbed a thorn into his head? God the Father did this when He created each one of us and sent His Son, Jesus, to save us. Why did He do this? "God is Love" (1 Jn 4:16).
Prayer: Father, may the love from the Spirit impel me (2 Cor 5:14). May I love others without counting the cost.
Promise: "He has bestowed on us the great and precious things He promised, so that through these you who have fled a world corrupted by lust might become sharers of the divine nature." -2 Pt 1:4
Praise: After a long struggle, Jane finally accepted God's forgiveness for aborting her daughter.

us to have You, God, inside us.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday "INTENSELY EUCHARISTIC"
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/29/2016
"This is My body, which is for you." -1 Corinthians 11:24
Jesus continues to say to each of us: "This is My body" and "This is My blood." Jesus says:
"My flesh is real food and My blood real drink" (Jn 6:55). When we receive Holy Communion,
we receive the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus.
Most of us reading this believe in the miracle of Jesus' eucharistic presence. However, we
may need to cry out to Jesus: "I believe. Help my lack of faith!" (Mk 9:24, our transl) How
deeply do we believe in the Eucharist? How do our lives answer this question? Do you make
any sacrifices necessary to receive Jesus daily in Communion? Would you walk twenty miles
to go to Mass? Would you give up the possibility of having grandchildren by encouraging your
only child to be a priest? Would you risk your life to receive Communion in Muslim countries
or China? Do you make visits to the Blessed Sacrament? Do you try to make frequent holy
hours before the Blessed Sacrament?
Pope St. John Paul II called us to be "intensely eucharistic" (Towards the Third Millennium,
55). If this book, One Bread, One Body, has been used by the Lord to deepen your faith in the
Eucharist, please tell us and we will be forever thankful for the Lord letting us be part of
His wondrous works. Praise our eucharistic Lord forever!
Prayer: Jesus, with great desire, I desire to receive You in Holy Communion (see Lk 22:15).
Promise: "Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus raised His eyes to heaven,
pronounced a blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to His disciples for distribution
to the crowd. They all ate until they had enough." -Lk 9:16-17
Praise: "Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore. O make us love Thee more and more."

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2016-03.asp?navlink=latest
Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
GOD'S MERCY
EXPERIENCE FIRST HAND
The mercy of God is a proclamation made to the world, a proclamation which each Christian
is called to experience at first hand.
MYSTERY OF GOD'S MERCY
The mystery of divine mercy is revealed in the history of the covenant between God and His
people Israel. God shows Himself ever rich in mercy, ever ready to treat His people with
deep tenderness and compassion ...
GOD'S WAY
Mercy "expresses God's way of reaching out to the sinner, offering him a new chance to look
at himself, convert, and believe" (Misericordiae Vultus), thus restoring his relationship
with him.

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
GOD'S MERCY
EXPERIENCE FIRST HAND
The mercy of God is a proclamation made to the world, a proclamation which each Christian
is called to experience at first hand.
MYSTERY OF GOD'S MERCY
The mystery of divine mercy is revealed in the history of the covenant between God and His
people Israel. God shows Himself ever rich in mercy, ever ready to treat His people with
deep tenderness and compassion ...
GOD'S WAY
Mercy "expresses God's way of reaching out to the sinner, offering him a new chance to look
at himself, convert, and believe" (Misericordiae Vultus), thus restoring his relationship
with him.

FALLEN-AWAY CATHOLICS? - One Bread, One Body, 5/28/2016
Saturday, May 28, 2016
Jude 17:20-25, Psalm 63:2-6, Mark 11:27-33
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/052816.cfm
FALLEN-AWAY CATHOLICS?
"There is One Who can protect you from a fall." -Jude 24 Each of us is in danger of falling away from our "sincere and complete devotion to Christ" (2 Cor 11:3). Even whole
churches can fall away from their love for Christ (see Gal 1:6; Mt 24:12). The majority of Christians will apostatize before Jesus comes a final time (2 Thes 2:3). When Jesus returns, will He find any faith on the earth? (Lk 18:8) "For all these reasons, let anyone who thinks he is standing upright watch out lest he fall!" (1 Cor 10:12)
"There is One Who can protect you from a fall and make you stand unblemished and exultant in the presence of His glory. Glory be to this only God our Savior" (Jude 24-25). Only by God's grace will we be protected from the deceit of Satan, the father of lies (Jn 8:44), who "is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Pt 5:8). We must resist temptation by growing strong in our "holy faith through prayer in the Holy Spirit" (Jude 20). If we fall into sin, we should repent and go to Confession as soon as possible. The Lord commands: "Submit to God; resist the devil and he will take flight. Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you backsliders" (Jas 4:7-8).
We can remain faithful to the Lord no matter what Satan does and no matter how many fall (see Ps 91:7). Repent, confess, grow strong, stand firm in your faith.
Prayer: Father, at Jesus' return, may I be a "member in good standing" of Your glorious, holy, and immaculate Church (see Eph 5:27).
Promise: "Your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify You." -Ps 63:4
Praise: With confident faith, Sarah prays daily, year after year, for her children and grandchildren to return to the Church.

WHEN YOUR WORLD FALLS APART - One Bread, One Body, 5/27/2016

1 Peter 4:7-13, Psalm 96:10-13, Mark 11:11-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/052716.cfm
WHEN YOUR WORLD FALLS APART
"The consummation of all is close at hand." -1 Peter 4:7
When your world is falling apart:
* "above all, let your love for one another be constant" (1 Pt 4:8),
* "put your trust in God" (Mk 11:22),
* "do not be perturbed" (1 Pt 4:7),
* "remain calm so that you will be able to pray" (1 Pt 4:7),
* "when you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance" (Mk 11:25),
* "put your gifts at the service of one another" (1 Pt 4:10),
* "do not be surprised, beloved, that a trial by fire is occurring in your midst" (1 Pt 4:12), and
* "rejoice instead, in the measure that you share Christ's sufferings" (1 Pt 4:13).
To summarize, when "the consummation of all is close at hand," that is, when the world is falling apart, love, trust, pray, forgive, serve, and rejoice. Don't be upset or surprised.
This may seem to be a very unusual way of reacting to the end of the world or of our own world, but we can react this way because of our personal relationship with Jesus. When we have totally surrendered our lives to Him, we can confidently say: "I am certain that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor powers, neither height nor depth nor any other creature, will be able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord" (Rm 8:38-39). "The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; Whom should I fear?" (Ps 27:1)
Prayer: Jesus, may I look forward to the end of the world because of Your final coming.
Promise: "I give you My word, if you are ready to believe that you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer, it shall be done for you." -Mk 11:24
Praise: St. Augustine spread the gospel. He converted the king, and through him thousands of English people.

"IF ANYONE THIRSTS..." (Jn 7:37) - One Bread, One Body, 5/26/2016
Thursday, May 26, 2016, St. Philip Neri
1 Peter 2:2-5, 9-12, Psalm 100:2-5, Mark 10:46-52

"IF ANYONE THIRSTS..." (Jn 7:37)
"Be as eager for milk as newborn babies." -1 Peter 2:2
Some of you may have missed out on Pentecost this year because, even after forty days of Lent and fifty days of Easter, you did not thirst that much for the Holy Spirit. Jesus continues to cry out: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me; let him drink who believes in Me. Scripture has it: 'From within him rivers of living water shall flow.' (Here He was referring to the Spirit)" (Jn 7:37-39).
To receive the Spirit, we must thirst. Thirst is one of the strongest human desires, and the thirst of a nursing baby is one of the best examples of this. Thus, the Lord commands us: "Be as eager for milk as newborn babies - pure milk of the Spirit to make you grow unto salvation" (1 Pt 2:2).
If we were not thirsty on Pentecost Sunday, why, on the Thursday after Pentecost, should we expect to be as thirsty as newborn babies for their mothers' milk? We can be this thirsty because the Lord is at work. This week, the Lord has repeatedly called you to stifle the desires of the flesh and thirst for the things of the Spirit (see Gal 5:17). Although Pentecost Sunday may not have been the time you received the Spirit, you may have at least started to thirst a little more for the things of God. Just the grace to read the Bible teaching in this book is God's way of increasing your thirst for the "pure milk of the Spirit."
Maybe your thirst isn't great, but it is greater. Right now, pray for either a greater thirst or a new Pentecost. Receive Pentecost now or very soon. Thirst as an infant thirsts.
Prayer: Father, may I want life in the Spirit more than I want pleasure.
Promise: "Jesus asked him, 'What do you want Me to do for you?' 'Rabboni,' the blind man said, 'I want to see.' Jesus said in reply, 'Be on your way. Your faith has healed you.' " -Mk 10:51-52
Praise: St. Philip was a teacher, but sold all his books, gave to the poor, and became "the lovable saint."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Rescript: In accord with the "Code of Canon Law", I hereby grant my permission to publish "One Bread, One Body" covering the period from April 1, 2016 through May 31, 2016

IS YOUR LOVE GENUINE? - One Bread, One Body, 5/25/2016
Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Venerable Bede, Pope St. Gregory VII, St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi
1 Peter 1:18-25, Psalm 147:12-15, 19-20, Mark 10:32-45

IS YOUR LOVE GENUINE?
"By obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves for a genuine love." -1 Peter 1:22
Is your love for your spouse, parents, or children genuine? Almost everyone would automatically answer "Yes." Do you believe that your family members and friends genuinely love you? Early in their lives, most people automatically answer "Yes."
Over the years, however, we usually are forced to conclude that some people's "love" for us has not been genuine. This makes us wonder if we will be sadly disappointed in other people's "love" for us. At some point in our lives, we suspect that even we ourselves have not been totally genuine in our love. Others are surprised that we haven't noticed it earlier.
Why not find out about "genuine love" now? Has your love been preceded by being purified through obedience to the truth? (1 Pt 1:22) If not, it probably isn't genuine. Is your love based on faith, virtue, discernment, self-control, perseverance, piety, and care for your brothers and sisters? (2 Pt 1:5-7) If not, your love probably isn't genuine.
Genuine love is humanly impossible, always accessible by God's grace, and the culminating grace of a great series of graces. Love genuinely.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit of love to teach me to love (see Rm 5:5).
Promise: "Realize that you were delivered from the futile way of life your fathers handed on to you, not by any diminishable sum of silver or gold, but by Christ's blood beyond all price." -1 Pt 1:18-19
Praise: At age 14, her teachers prophesied that Catherine would become a great saint. At age 17, she took the name Mary Magdalene and eventually became St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi.

THE BATTLE OF DESIRES - One Bread, One Body, 5/24/2016

THE BATTLE OF DESIRES
"Do not yield to the desires that once shaped you in your ignorance." -1 Peter 1:14
Satan is trying to make us his slaves by pressuring and manipulating us through our carnal desires. He wants us to live "at the level of the flesh" (Eph 2:3) and to die spiritually (Eph 2:1). Therefore, we must "lay aside" our "former way of life and the old self which deteriorates through illusion and desire" (Eph 4:22). We are to "put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of the flesh" (Rm 13:14). "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires" (Gal 5:24).
Instead of living to fulfill the desires of our flesh, we should hunger and thirst for righteousness' sake (Mt 5:6). We are called to desire and seek first the kingdom of God and His way of righteousness (Mt 6:33). Like Jesus, "with great desire" we must "desire to eat" the new Passover with Him (Lk 22:15, our transl.), that is, celebrate the Eucharist with Jesus.
Finally, both our good and bad desires will be fulfilled. If our carnal desires have not been crucified, they will be "fulfilled" in the selfishness and isolation of damnation in hell. If we have crucified our carnal desires and nourished our godly desires, we will live in love forever, face-to-face with God in heaven. Desire the Lord's desires.
Prayer: Jesus, be Lord of my desires.
Promise: "There is no one who has given up home, brothers or sisters, mother or father, children or property, for Me and for the gospel who will not receive in this present age a hundred times as many homes, brothers and sisters, mothers, children and property - and persecution besides - and in the age to come, everlasting life." -Mk 10:29-30
Praise: Timothy gave up family, home, and property to become a missionary for the Lord Jesus.

LOSING EVERYTHING TO BE SAVED - One Bread, One Body, 5/23/2016

LOSING EVERYTHING TO BE SAVED
"Then who can be saved?" -Mark 10:26
We should rejoice when we "suffer the distress of many trials" (1 Pt 1:6), if these trials will help us achieve "faith's goal, [our] salvation" (1 Pt 1:9). We should be quite willing to sell everything we have and give the proceeds to the poor (Mk 10:21), if this is the way the Lord wants us to work out our salvation (Phil 2:12). We should even be willing to die at a young age "lest wickedness pervert" our minds "or deceit beguile" our souls (Wis 4:11). We have only one goal in life: to be saved. We will lose everything to gain our salvation (Lk 9:24).
I invite and challenge you to pray to the Lord: "I accept salvation - no matter what it takes." By praying this prayer, you are:
* saying that you will sacrifice everything to be saved,
* trusting in the Lord,
* increasing the likelihood of more sufferings in your life,
* increasing the likelihood of more joy in your life (see Col 1:24),
* making your life more simple,
* making your life more counter-cultural, and you therefore are more likely to be persecuted, and
* expressing the ultimate freedom.
Jesus is our Savior. Only through His name can we be saved (Acts 4:12). This is the only meaning of life. Accept Jesus as your Savior.
Prayer: Father, I put my life in Your hands.
Promise: "Praised be the God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He Who in His great mercy gave us new birth." -1 Pt 1:3
Praise: George was an addict to whom a "fix" was everything, but gave it up for He Who is All in All.

PM eNewsletter Trinity Sunday
May 22nd Trinity Sunday
Oh, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, fill us with the love that You have as the Triune God.
Fill us with your presence and let us be on fire, yet confident of how loved we are.
Let your love for each other come upon us and let it set us on a course of loving actions
toward all around us.
Let your love set upon us as a seal, a seal that cannot be broken through sin and
disobedience.
Continue to guide us to all truth and let us be instruments for you to others, to better
this beautifully created world that you gave us.
Let our fire cause us to see with Your eyes and love with Your love and touch with Your
touch.
Let us be as Christ to each other and let us raise our hearts to offer You praise and
worship through Your Church and its leaders.
Thank you for your never failing presence.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday ETERNAL, UNIQUE, TRIUNE RELATIONSHIPS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/22/2016
"All that the Father has belongs to Me (Jesus). That is why I said that what He
(the Holy Spirit) will announce to you He will have from Me." -John 16:15
God is one. He is uniquely one, for He is three Persons in one God. God is Trinity. He is
Family and Community.
God is a community of eternal begetting and "begottenness." The Father has been begetting
and is always begetting the Son. Therefore, the Son is uniquely begotten, and the Holy
Spirit is the eternal Fruit of this love of the Father and the Son.
God is a community of eternal sending. The Father has been sending and is always sending
Jesus and the Holy Spirit; Jesus also is always sending the Holy Spirit
(see Jn 20:21-22; 14:26; 16:7).
God is a community of eternal witnessing. The Spirit witnesses to the Son (Jn 15:26), Who
is the faithful and true Witness (Rv 1:5) of the Father, Who also witnesses for Jesus
(Jn 5:37; 8:18).
God is Triune Community, and the relationships in this Community are unique. We can
understand them enough to know that we can never understand them very well. God is
transcendent. His triune life is the mystery of mysteries. Yet He has chosen us to live in
Him and in Trinitarian love. Praise the Holy Trinity!
Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I have been immersed in You through Baptism
(Mt 28:19). May my life give glory to You.
Promise: "This hope will not leave us disappointed, because the love of God has been poured
out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us." -Rm 5:5
Praise: "Praise the Holy Trinity, undivided Unity; Holy God, Mighty God, God immortal, be
adored!"

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2016-03.asp?navlink=latest
Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
GOD'S MERCY
WORKS OF MERCY
These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to
help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing
them. On such things we will be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that "the
Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; this will be
a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to
enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience
of God's mercy" (Misericordiae Vultus).
NEVER SEPARATE
The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh
of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that
they too are poor and in need.
DON'T WASTE TIME
Let us not waste this ... favorable ... time for conversion! We ask this through the
maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, who encountering the greatness of God's mercy
freely bestowed upon her, was the first to acknowledge her lowliness (cf. Lk 1:48) and
to call herself the Lord's humble servant (cf. Lk 1:38).

Praise: "Praise the Holy Trinity, undivided Unity; Holy God, Mighty God, God immortal, be
adored!"

PRAY DAY, PRAY DAY - One Bread, One Body, 5/21/2016
Saturday, May 21, 2016, St. Christopher Magallanes
James 5:13-20, Psalm 141:1-3, 8, Mark 10:13-16
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/052116.cfm
PRAY DAY, PRAY DAY
"They in turn are to pray over him." -James 5:14
The Christians addressed by James were divided and lukewarm. They needed help desperately. After dealing with an array of problems, the author came to the conclusion that the best thing to do would be to pray. He reiterates: "If anyone among you is suffering hardship, he must pray" (Jas 5:13). "This prayer uttered in faith will reclaim the one who is ill" (Jas 5:15). "Pray for one another, that you may find healing. The fervent petition of a holy man is powerful indeed. Elijah was only a man like us, yet he prayed earnestly" (Jas 5:16-17).
Pray for those suffering, sick, or strayed (Jas 5:19), but whatever you do, PRAY. Pray as if your life depended on it. Pray when you feel like it and when you don't feel like it. Pray always and never lose heart (Lk 18:1). "Never cease praying" (1 Thes 5:17).
Mary at Fatima, Pope St. John Paul II at Rome, Bl. Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and other prophets all said the same thing: the Church must once again become a "house of prayer" (Is 56:7).
Jesus is praying at the right hand of the Father (Heb 7:25). The Spirit will help us join Him in prayer (Rm 8:26). Pray!
Prayer: Lord, may I "pray in the Spirit" at every opportunity (Eph 6:18; 1 Cor 14:15).
Promise: "He embraced them and blessed them, placing His hands on them." -Mk 10:16
Praise: St. Christopher gave absolution to his executioners and then prayed, "I ask God that the shedding of my blood serves toward the peace of our divided Mexico."
(Order, listen to, or download our CDs to help you increase your prayer life at presentationministries.com: "Daily Prayers" CD 62-3, "Liturgy of the Hours" CD 89-3, "Married Couples Praying Together" CD 116-1, "Family Prayer" CD 59-1, "Praying the Our Father" CD 67-3.)

SAVING MARRIAGE - One Bread, One Body, 5/20/2016
Friday, May 20, 2016, St. Bernardine of Siena
James 5:9-12, Psalm 103:1-4, 8-9, 11-12, Mark 10:1-12

SAVING MARRIAGE
"They are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore let no man separate what God has joined." -Mark 10:8-9
The name Jesus means: "Yahweh saves." We need Jesus to save us not only from sin and death but also from the impossible dilemmas of marriage. For example, human beings are social and sexual. Therefore, we want to be with others and are attracted to have sexual relations with some of these people. Human beings also want to be loved deeply and forever. We do not want to be used, "dumped," and rejected. Therefore, we are made to seek a permanent commitment of love, which is often expressed in marriage. However, because of our stubborn, fallen human nature (see Mk 10:5), we aren't able to be close to people for a long time without hurting them badly and being hurt by them. Consequently, our nature has deep-seated needs which can't be fulfilled. We are doomed. Marriage is doomed. Therefore, Moses permitted divorce in an attempt to limit the bad effects of being married in our human condition.
Jesus announced that divorce was no longer necessary. He is God and is able to change our human nature so that we can fulfill our legitimate needs. Baptized into Jesus, we can love deeply and forever. The life and marriage we want are now possible. Christ's salvation and our Baptism into Him makes divorce obsolete and matrimony holy, not harmful. Accept Jesus as the Savior of your marriage and your life.
Prayer: Father, I will live my new marriage and my new life in Jesus.
Promise: "Let it be 'yes' if you mean yes and 'no' if you mean no. In this way you will not incur condemnation." -Jas 5:12
Praise: St. Bernardine was called "The Apostle of Italy." He served plague victims before becoming a priest.

HOW MUCH HELL? - One Bread, One Body, 5/19/2016
Thursday, May 19, 2016

HOW MUCH HELL?
"Like sheep they are herded into the nether world." -Psalm 49:15
Years ago, preachers and people in general talked about hell frequently. Today, although the word "hell" is repeatedly mentioned by those using profanity, hell is denied by many people, even Christians, or it is greatly de-emphasized. How much "hell" should we give people, that is, how often should we seriously mention hell at church and other places? This question is difficult to answer.
A possible rule of thumb is to mention hell as often as Jesus does in the Gospels. Jesus wasn't always talking about hell. His favorite subjects were His Father, the kingdom of heaven, and the cross. Nevertheless, Jesus did not ignore or de-emphasize hell. He did not use the term "hell" but spoke of "Gehenna with its unquenchable fire" (Mk 9:43) where "the worm dies not" (Mk 9:48). Jesus also referred to "Hades," translated "the abode of the dead" (Lk 16:23, NAB) or "the netherworld" (Lk 16:23, RNAB). In this place, people are tortured in flames (Lk 16:24). When Jesus taught about Judgment Day, He mentioned "eternal punishment" (Mt 25:46) for evildoers who have been hurled "into the fiery furnace where they will wail and grind their teeth" (Mt 13:42).
Let's fix our eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2) and not on hell or anything else. Nevertheless, let us be as conscious of hell as Jesus wants us to be, as indicated by His words in the Gospels.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me the power to snatch people away from going to hell (see Jude 22).
Promise: "But God will redeem me from the power of the nether world by receiving me." -Ps 49:16
Praise: José prays a rosary each morning on his walk into work.

SINS OF OMISSION - One Bread, One Body, 5/18/2016

SINS OF OMISSION
"When a man knows the right thing to do and does not do it, he sins." -James 4:17
Sins are not just what we commit but also what we omit. We will be judged not only for what we say (Mt 12:36) but also for what we don't say (see Ez 3:18; 33:6). We will be judged not only for lending our presence to things that do not glorify God (see 1 Cor 10:31) but also for our absences from the assembly of God's people (Heb 10:25) and from other works of the Lord.
Before we were created, the Lord prepared a life of good deeds for each of us to do (Eph 2:10). He holds us accountable to do all of these deeds. For example, Jesus warned the church of Sardis: "Wake up, and strengthen what remains before it dies. I find that the sum of your deeds is less than complete" (Rv 3:2).
If you are sinning by omission, repent and cry out for the Lord's mercy. "He is an Offering for our sins" (1 Jn 2:2). The Lord will forgive. By His grace, we will do the impossible. We will do all that He asks of us. Live your life for Jesus to the full (see Jn 10:10).
Prayer: Father, I put my life in Your hands.
Promise: "Yet in no way can a man redeem himself, or pay his own ransom to God; too high is the price to redeem one's life; he would never have enough to remain alive always and not see destruction." -Ps 49:8-10
Praise: Pope St. John I celebrated Easter in Constantinople and died in prison soon afterward.

RANKLED WITH RANKINGS
"If anyone wishes to rank first, he must remain the last one of all." -Mark 9:35
Rankings! Ratings! Polls! Surveys! Standings! Our culture thrives on these measures. We constantly argue about who is most important (Mk 9:34). We have political approval polls, opinion polls, talk shows, sports standings, Most Valuable Players, Nielsen ratings of TV shows, Fortune 500 companies, and even TV shows which rank who is worthy to "survive" another week at the expense of eliminating someone else. However, our modern culture is not the first to be obsessed about ranking. The apostles on several occasions fell into this trap of rivalry. It's part of our fallen human nature (Jas 4:5). If we continue to live by the world's competitive standards, we will destroy ourselves or at least "vote each other off the island"! (see Gal 5:15) We need a new nature to escape this trap.
In our Baptism, Jesus gives us a new nature which brings us into His kingdom. Jesus' kingdom is not like that of this world; living under Jesus' lordship is the complete opposite (Jas 4:4). We are to "never act out of rivalry or conceit" (Phil 2:3). Jesus warns: "It cannot be that way with you" (Mt 20:26). Jesus molds diverse people into complementary parts (1 Cor 12:12ff), not competing ones. We are to be "like-minded" and not rivals (see 1 Cor 1:10). "Let all parties think humbly of others as superior to themselves" (Phil 2:3).
Prayer: Father, "I have come to rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:8). Give me the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16).
Promise: "Cast your care upon the Lord, and He will support you; never will He permit the just man to be disturbed." -Ps 55:23
Praise: José accepted Jesus as Lord and himself as His servant.

A father had a very serious problem. For years, his son had been possessed by a "mute and deaf spirit" (Mk 9:25), who threw the son into convulsions in which he ground his teeth, rolled on the ground, foamed at the mouth, and became rigid (Mk 9:18, 20).
Jesus challenged the father to look at this situation in a new way. The father had been looking to others to rescue him and his son. Jesus challenged the father to take responsibility for the continuation of his problem. He challenged the father to accept correction, admit the weakness of his faith, and pray for greater faith (Mk 9:23-24). Jesus had just admonished the crowd for being "an unbelieving lot" (Mk 9:19). Later, He would correct the disciples for their lack of prayer (see Mk 9:29).
If you have problems,
* take responsibility,
* take correction from Jesus,
* admit the weakness of your faith, and
* pray for greater faith.
Prayer: Father, help me see my problems in a new way - Your way.
Promise: "The harvest of justice is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace." -Jas 3:18
Praise: Louis repented, placed his trust in Jesus, had his vasectomy reversed, and accepted the five additional children God gave.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday THE PENTECOSTAL CYCLE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/15/2016
"Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive men's sins, they are forgiven them." -John 20:22-23
Come, Holy Spirit! Happy Pentecost! Happy birthday to the Church! Alleluia!
Before receiving the Holy Spirit, we must repent of sin (Acts 2:38). After receiving the
Spirit, we are to proclaim to the nations repentance and the forgiveness of sins (Lk 24:47).
After Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to the leaders of the Church, He commanded: "If you forgive
men's sins, they are forgiven them; if you hold them bound, they are held bound"
(Jn 20:22-23). In summary, before receiving the Spirit, we must begin to remove the planks
of sin from our lives (Mt 7:5). After receiving the Spirit, we must then remove the specks
of sin from others' eyes (Mt 7:5).
When we first repent ourselves and then try to remove others' sins by warning them
(see Ez 3:18; 33:8) and praying for them (1 Jn 5:16), we realize even more our need for
greater repentance. This greater repentance opens us to receive the Holy Spirit in greater
ways. Then we again join with the Spirit in convicting the world of sin (Jn 16:8) and
helping others even more to accept God's grace and be freed from sin. As we see others
convicted of sin, we become convicted ourselves. We repent more and receive the Spirit more
deeply. Thus we have a cycle which results in ever greater life in the Spirit. By obeying
Matthew 7:5, we can have a continuing, ever-increasing Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Father, thank You for the privilege of repenting and leading others to do the same.
Come, Holy Spirit!
Promise: "Tongues as of fire appeared, which parted and came to rest on each of them. All
were filled with the Holy Spirit." -Acts 2:3-4
Praise: Praise You, Lord, for sending the Spirit to instruct us in all things (Jn 14:26).
Alleluia!
