STRETCHING EXERCISES
"Jesus said to them: 'There is no need for them to disperse. Give them something to eat yourselves.' " -Matthew 14:16
A large crowd, a deserted place, and a shortage of food - Jesus' disciples recognize that a problem is developing. In fact, they have even worked out a reasonable solution (Mt 14:15). They want Jesus to fix the problem according to their plan. But Jesus has a different approach. He says, "Give them something to eat yourselves" (Mt 14:16). Jesus wants His disciples to fix the problem according to His plan.
Jesus' plan was to multiply loaves and fish to feed the hungry crowd. Before He would stretch the food, however, He wanted to stretch His disciples (see Jn 6:6). Jesus increases faith by stretching His followers to be larger vessels able to contain more faith. However, you don't have to wait for a problem to develop before your faith is increased. You can work with Jesus in advance by:
* repenting of sins so that you may be a larger, "distinguished vessel" (2 Tm 2:21),
* daily reading of "that gracious word of His which can enlarge you" (Acts 20:32), and
* frequent reception of the Eucharist.
When Mary said "Yes" to God's plan, her womb was stretched as the Infant Jesus grew within her. Even more, her subsequent daily life with Jesus constantly stretched her. As we receive Jesus in reconciliation, word, and Eucharist, we carry His body within us, and He will stretch us. Open yourself to Jesus, and He will multiply your faith.
Prayer: Jesus, stretch me any way You choose so that I may increase in faith (see Lk 17:5).
Promise: "All those present ate their fill. The fragments remaining, when gathered up, filled twelve baskets." -Mt 14:20
Praise: St. Alphonsus, suffering himself from severe, crippling rheumatism, founded his congregation for "the most abandoned."

PM eNewsletter 18th Sunday in Ordinary time
July 31st 18th Sunday in ordinary time.
This week, oh! Jesus, Your church celebrates a great saint and a great gift.
St. John Vianney was a priest who loved You so much, that You gave him gifts that made
him a great confessor.
He would hear confessions up to 16 hours a day.
And his knowledge of the sins of the people in his confessional was fantastic.
We also celebrate Your showing 3 of Your apostles Your true self in the transfiguration.
You become glowing in appearance and conversed with Moses and Elijah.
Thank You Jesus, for glowing with love.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday A BOMB
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=7/31/2016
"Relax! Eat heartily, drink well. Enjoy yourself." -Luke 12:19
The late Fr. Rick Thomas said that the verse quoted above, Luke 12:19, is the most obeyed
verse in the Bible. However, God's reaction to those who live out this verse is: "You fool!
This very night your life shall be required of you. To whom will all this piled-up wealth
of yours go?" (Lk 12:20) The Lord does not consider the "good life" of relaxation and
enjoyment to be that good. This comes as a shock to us who have been taught to base our
lives on, and save our money for, entertainment, relaxation, and enjoyment.
Today's Gospel reading is like a bomb which would destroy our whole lives if we let it
explode by believing it. Yet, if we don't lose our lives now, they won't be saved for
eternity (see Lk 9:24). "What profit does he show who gains the whole world and destroys
himself in the process?" (Lk 9:25) We can believe God's Word now and let it be like a hammer
shattering our lives (see Jer 23:29), or we can maintain the status quo, hoping today's
Gospel reading doesn't mean what it seems to mean.
As we look to the future, we naturally have feelings of insecurity. We know that death
awaits us, if Jesus doesn't return first. We know that suffering, sickness, and pain
probably lie ahead. These prospects will leave us insecure unless our lives are built on
the rock of obedience to God's Word (Mt 7:24). The best thing we can do is to obey God's
Word, no matter what the immediate consequences.
Prayer: Father, may my life be based on Your Word, which will last forever (see Lk 21:33).
Promise: "Since you have been raised up in company with Christ, set your heart on what
pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God's right hand." -Col 3:1-2
Praise: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endures forever" (Ps 118:1).
Alleluia!

THE VITAL ROLE OF FAMILIES
"THE POWER OF GRACE"
We must be grateful that most people do value family relationships that are permanent and
marked by mutual respect. They appreciate the Church's efforts to offer guidance and
counseling in areas related to growth in love, overcoming conflict and raising children. Many
are touched by the power of grace experienced in sacramental Reconciliation and in the
Eucharist, grace that helps them face the challenges of marriage and the family. (38)
"KEEP MOVING FORWARD"
I thank God that many families, which are far from considering themselves perfect, live in
love, fulfilling their calling and keep moving forward, even if they fall many times along
the way. (51)
"ENTHUSIASM AND COURAGE"
We need to find the right language, arguments and forms of witness that can help us reach the
hearts of young people, appealing to their capacity for generosity, commitment, love, and even
heroism, and in this way inviting them to take up the challenge of marriage with faith and
courage. (40)

This very night your life shall be required of you. To whom will all this piled-up wealth of yours go?" (Lk 12:20) The Lord does not consider the "good life" of relaxation and enjoyment to be that good. This comes as a shock to us who have been taught to base our lives on, and save our money for, entertainment, relaxation, and enjoyment.
Today's Gospel reading is like a bomb which would destroy our whole lives if we let it explode by believing it. Yet, if we don't lose our lives now, they won't be saved for eternity (see Lk 9:24). "What profit does he show who gains the whole world and destroys himself in the process?" (Lk 9:25) We can believe God's Word now and let it be like a hammer shattering our lives (see Jer 23:29), or we can maintain the status quo, hoping today's Gospel reading doesn't mean what it seems to mean.
As we look to the future, we naturally have feelings of insecurity. We know that death awaits us, if Jesus doesn't return first. We know that suffering, sickness, and pain probably lie ahead. These prospects will leave us insecure unless our lives are built on the rock of obedience to God's Word (Mt 7:24). The best thing we can do is to obey God's Word, no matter what the immediate consequences.
Prayer: Father, may my life be based on Your Word, which will last forever (see Lk 21:33).
Promise: "Since you have been raised up in company with Christ, set your heart on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God's right hand." -Col 3:1-2
Praise: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endures forever" (Ps 118:1). Alleluia!

THE STANDARD FOR SEXUAL PURITY - One Bread, One Body, 7/30/2016
Saturday, July 30, 2016, St. Peter Chrysologus
Jeremiah 26:11-16, 24, Psalm 69:15-16, 30-31, 33-34, Matthew 14:1-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/073016.cfm
THE STANDARD FOR SEXUAL PURITY
"Recall that Herod had had John arrested, put in chains, and imprisoned on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. That was because John had told him, 'It is not right for you to live with her.' " -Matthew 14:3-4
Jesus commands us to be pure as He is pure (1 Jn 3:3). This means that our standards for purity are not those of the world; they are Jesus' standards. Jesus, of course, condemns adultery (Mt 14:4), fornication (Rv 21:8), sterilization (see Gn 1:28), contraception, homosexual acts (Rm 1:27), masturbation (see Gn 38:9), pornography, and all other sexual sins. However, Jesus' standards for sexual purity are focused primarily not on overcoming these temptations but on resisting sexual fantasies.
Jesus says clearly and bluntly: "You have heard the commandment, 'You shall not commit adultery.' What I say to you is: anyone who looks lustfully at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his thoughts. If your right eye is your trouble, gouge it out and throw it away!" (Mt 5:27-29) Because of TV and the Internet, we, more than any people in history, are repeatedly tempted to sin through sexual fantasies. In the summertime, we have even more temptations. We must do whatever it takes to resist sexual fantasies, even if we have to gouge out our TVs and avoid the Internet. Be pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3).
Prayer: Father, by Your grace I will meet Your standards. Immaculate Mary, pray for me.
Promise: "The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not." -Ps 69:34
Praise: St. Peter Chrysologus earned the name ("golden-tongue") for his brief yet concise homilies.

THE HOME FRONT - One Bread, One Body, 7/29/2016
Friday, July 29, 2016, St. Martha
Jeremiah 26:1-9, Psalm 69:5, 8-10, 14, John 11:19-27, or Luke 10:38-42

THE HOME FRONT
"Jesus said to them, 'No prophet is without honor except in his native place, indeed in his own house.' " -Matthew 13:57
We as Christians expect Herod (Mt 14:1ff), Hitler, and Planned Parenthood to be our enemies. We may be surprised when our own religious leaders attack and reject us (see Mt 12:1ff). And we are usually shocked when our hometown folk, even our own family, reject and persecute us (see Mt 13:57). We understand the lament of the psalmist: "If an enemy had reviled me, I could have borne it; if he who hates me had vaunted himself against me, I might have hidden from him. But you, my other self, my companion and my bosom friend! You, whose comradeship I enjoyed; at whose side I walked in procession in the house of God!" (Ps 55:13-15)
We Christians are often our own worst enemies. When we Christians are "hit close to home," we are hit hard. Therefore, we must arm ourselves with the mentality that we will suffer in the flesh (1 Pt 4:1), even from those closest to us. Jesus made it clear that "a man's enemies" would be "those of his own household" (Mt 10:36). Jesus said: "You will be delivered up even by your parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. All will hate you because of Me" (Lk 21:16-17). All who even want "to live a godly life in Christ Jesus" will be persecuted (2 Tm 3:12), possibly by their families.
When we hear this sobering news of persecution on the home front, we should rejoice that we have been chosen to be like Jesus by sharing in His sufferings.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me how to share in Christ's sufferings by being formed into the pattern of His death (Phil 3:10).
Promise: "I am the Resurrection and the Life."-Jn 11:19
Praise: St. Martha believed in Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life. She exercised both her gift of hospitality and her ability to trust in the Lord.

YOUR NET WORTH
"The reign of God is also like a dragnet thrown into the lake, which collected all sorts of things." -Matthew 13:47
What is your favorite parable? Many people especially like the first of the kingdom-parables, the parable of the sower and the seed, which is better named the parable of the types of ground. The parables of the mustard seed and the precious pearl are always favorites. Yet how many claim that the parable of the dragnet is their favorite? Nonetheless, the parable of the dragnet is the grand finale of the kingdom-parables in Matthew's Gospel. It is the last word. Thus, the kingdom-parables end on this ominous note: "That is how it will be at the end of the world. Angels will go out and separate the wicked from the just and hurl the wicked into the fiery furnace, where they will wail and grind their teeth" (Mt 13:49-50).
This is not a happy ending, but it is the ending the Lord wants. The Lord calls us to conversion, to accept Him as Savior, Lord, and God on His terms. We must say and live: "I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Gal 2:19-20). Only those who "live no longer for themselves, but for" Jesus will be saved (2 Cor 5:15). All others will be hurled "into the fiery furnace, where they will wail" (Mt 13:50) in "eternal ruin apart from the presence of the Lord" (2 Thes 1:9).
The dragnet has been thrown into the lake. It is being pulled toward you. It is getting closer. Cry out for Jesus, for "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Rm 10:13).
Prayer: Father, may I end in love and not in hell.
Promise: "Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand." -Jer 18:6
Praise: Sarah had a difficult husband but she was at peace when she realized that when she served him, she served Jesus.

HOW TO BURN-OUT
"Woe to me, mother, that you gave me birth! A man of strife and contention to all the land! I neither borrow nor lend, yet all curse me." -Jeremiah 15:10
Jeremiah wished he had never been born. He sat alone while others were partying (Jer 15:17). His pain was "continuous" and his "wound incurable" (Jer 15:18). According to the terminology of "pop-psychology," Jeremiah was experiencing "burn-out" in his prophetic ministry.
In contrast to "pop-psychology," the Lord in the Scriptures means something very different by the term "burn-out." "Burn-out" is a good thing. In fact, it is the meaning of life, "for our God is a consuming Fire," Who wants to totally consume us in His love (Heb 12:29). Thus, Jesus came "to light a fire on the earth" (Lk 12:49). By the fire of His Word (see Jer 23:29; 20:9), He will burn away the impurities of our hearts (see Lk 24:32) to make us unblemished offerings to be consumed by His love.
We have no choice but to be "burned out," but we can choose whether to be "burned out" in selfishness and self-destruction or to be "burned out" in total self-giving and everlasting love.
"Burn-out" in the bad sense is not caused by total commitment to Jesus but by anything less than total commitment. Sell all that you have (Mt 13:44, 46) and follow Jesus (Mt 19:21). "Burn out" for love of Him so you don't "burn-out."
Prayer: Father, fire-try my faith (1 Pt 1:7). May I not be so reluctant to "burn-out" that I never catch fire.
Promise: "When I found Your words, I devoured them; they became my joy and the happiness of my heart." -Jer 15:16
Praise: Thomas found that going to Mass and receiving the Eucharist during the week was the fuel he needed to keep the fire burning bright.

"JESUS WEPT" (see Lk 19:41) - One Bread, One Body, 7/26/2016

"JESUS WEPT" (see Lk 19:41)
"Let my eyes stream with tears day and night." -Jeremiah 14:17
Many people couldn't care less about the condition of the world, the state of the Church, the destruction of human lives, the breakdown of marriage and family, etc. They just stare at the TV and try to escape from reality through constant indulgence in petty pleasures. We should love the Lord and other people enough to pray: "Let my eyes stream with tears day and night, without rest, over the great destruction which overwhelms the virgin daughter of my people, over her incurable wound" (Jer 14:17).
When Jesus saw people weakened and lost, His heart was moved with pity (Mt 9:36). Jesus cared enough to die on the cross to change this world. As His followers, we should care, too. Because Jesus is Lord and is Love (see 1 Jn 4:16), we should not be depressed. However, we should care enough to cry and live lives of love. If done in love, every act of our lives is precious and powerful. We must not "spend what remains" of our earthly lives "on human desires but on the will of God" (1 Pt 4:2). If we care enough to cry, we will be spared on Judgment Day (see Ez 9:4), and we may hasten the time for the Lord to have pity on us and set us free (see Ps 102:14-15).
When Jesus saw Jerusalem, He wept (Lk 19:41). When we see our world today, should we do anything less? There is hope. There is always hope, for Jesus is Lord. However, hope will be fulfilled only for those who care enough to cry. Love, cry, live, die, and live forever in Jesus.
Prayer: Father, "love never fails" (1 Cor 13:8). I accept Your grace to live a life of love for and in You. May I live, weep, rejoice, die, and rise in love.
Promise: "Then the saints will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. Let everyone heed what he hears!" -Mt 13:43
Praise: Sts. Joachim & Ann taught their daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the love of the Lord.

"LIFT HIGH THE CROSS!" - One Bread, One Body, 7/25/2016
Monday, July 25, 2016, St. James
2 Corinthians 4:7-15, Psalm 126:1-6, Matthew 20:20-28

"LIFT HIGH THE CROSS!"
"Death is at work in us, but life in you." -2 Corinthians 4:12
Peter, James, and John were the three major apostles chosen by Jesus. Only they were chosen by Jesus to be present when He raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead (Mk 5:37), when He was transfigured (Mt 17:1-2), and when He suffered His agony in the garden of Gethsemani (Mt 26:37). Consequently, when James was beheaded (Acts 12:2) and Peter on death row, it seemed that the Church was being quickly destroyed by the systematic extermination of its leaders.
However, the very opposite was true, for in dying we are born to new life, and so is the Church. When we continually "carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus" (2 Cor 4:10) and are "being delivered to death for Jesus' sake," then the life of Jesus is revealed (2 Cor 4:11). In our weakness, God's power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). "It is true He was crucified out of weakness, but He lives by the power of God. We too are weak in Him, but we live with Him by God's power in us" (2 Cor 13:4).
Jesus' death on the cross and our share in His death are our glory, not our shame (see Gal 6:14; Rm 1:16). "The message of the cross is complete absurdity to those who are headed for ruin, but to us who are experiencing salvation it is the power of God" (1 Cor 1:18). "Indeed, everything is ordered to [our] benefit, so that the grace bestowed in abundance may bring greater glory to God" (2 Cor 4:15). "Lift high the cross!"
Prayer: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world" (St. Francis of Assisi).
Promise: "Such is the case with the Son of Man Who has come, not to be served by others, but to serve, to give His own life as a ransom for the many." -Mt 20:28
Praise: St. James was honored by King Afonso of Kongo, the country's second Christian king.

Sunday PRAYER CHANGES ?
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=7/24/2016
"One of His disciples asked Him, 'Lord, teach us to pray.' " -Luke 11:1
Sometimes our prayer is a projection of our own self-hatred rather than a communication
with God. For instance, Abraham began interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah by saying: "See
how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes!" (Gn 18:27) Later
in his prayer, Abraham begged God not to become impatient (Gn 18:30) or angry (Gn 18:32)
with him, as if God could be impatient or angry. Abraham projected his own problems onto
God. Eventually, Abraham quit interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah. He may have thought
these cities didn't deserve to be saved or that God wouldn't save them, although God had
repeatedly said He would. Abraham was impatient with God's timing.
When we pray, may we not project our self-hatred, problems, and limitations onto God.
Rather, may we let God project His love, holiness, and power onto us. We pray not in order
to change God but to allow Him to change us. Praying is not God-changing; rather, it is
"us-changing," which makes it life-changing. "Lord, teach us to pray" (Lk 11:1).
Prayer: Father, change me, then my prayer, and then change me more.
Promise: "He pardoned all our sins. He canceled the bond that stood against us with all its
claims, snatching it up and nailing it to the cross." -Col 2:13-14
Praise: Mighty, omnipotent Lord, we lay our lives before You in homage. All glory be to You,
Alleluia!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
THE VITAL ROLE OF FAMILIES
"SOURCE OF COMFORT"
The word of God is not a series of abstract ideas but rather a source of comfort and
companionship for every family that experiences difficulties or sufferings. (22)
NEEDED VALUES
As Christians, we can hardly stop advocating marriage simply to avoid countering
contemporary sensibilities, or out of a desire to be fashionable or a sense of helplessness
in the face of human and moral failings. We would be depriving the world of values that we
can and must offer. (35)
THE FAMILY'S STRENGTH
The strength of the family "lies in its capacity to love and to teach how to love. For all
a family's problems, it can always grow, beginning with love." (Relatio Finalis, 2015) (53)

PRAYER CHANGES ?
"One of His disciples asked Him, 'Lord, teach us to pray.' " -Luke 11:1
Sometimes our prayer is a projection of our own self-hatred rather than a communication with God. For instance, Abraham began interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah by saying: "See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes!" (Gn 18:27) Later in his prayer, Abraham begged God not to become impatient (Gn 18:30) or angry (Gn 18:32) with him, as if God could be impatient or angry. Abraham projected his own problems onto God. Eventually, Abraham quit interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah. He may have thought these cities didn't deserve to be saved or that God wouldn't save them, although God had repeatedly said He would. Abraham was impatient with God's timing.
When we pray, may we not project our self-hatred, problems, and limitations onto God. Rather, may we let God project His love, holiness, and power onto us. We pray not in order to change God but to allow Him to change us. Praying is not God-changing; rather, it is "us-changing," which makes it life-changing. "Lord, teach us to pray" (Lk 11:1).
Prayer: Father, change me, then my prayer, and then change me more.
Promise: "He pardoned all our sins. He canceled the bond that stood against us with all its claims, snatching it up and nailing it to the cross." -Col 2:13-14
Praise: Mighty, omnipotent Lord, we lay our lives before You in homage. All glory be to You, Alleluia!

WEED LOVERS - One Bread, One Body, 7/23/2016
Saturday, July 23, 2016, St. Bridget
Jeremiah 7:1-11, Psalm 84:3-6, 8, 11, Matthew 13:24-30

WEED LOVERS
"Do you want us to go out and pull them up?" -Matthew 13:28
The farmer in Jesus' parable of the wheat and weeds says something I've never heard a farmer or gardener say before. He says that you shouldn't pull up the weeds because "you might take the wheat along with them" (Mt 13:29). It seems that Jesus' wheat and weeds are much more intertwined than those of other people. This is a scary thought. It's bad enough to put up with the weeds much less having to be closely connected to them.
Jesus doesn't want us intertwined with the values, priorities, morality, idolatry, and selfishness of the weeds. Jesus has chosen us out of the world (Jn 15:19). However, Jesus does want us intertwined with the weeds through love, forgiveness, evangelization, service, and mercy. Our hearts go out to the weeds, and in this way we are intertwined with them. It should be the desire of our hearts that the weeds turn to Jesus in repentance and faith. Then Jesus will transform the weeds into wheat. We are even willing to suffer [for the weeds and] because of the weeds to motivate them to let Jesus make them wheat. We will accept a lifetime of suffering if only the weeds turn into wheat before the ultimate weeding, the end of the world (see Mt 13:30).
Prayer: Father, give me the grace so that the more I love the sinner, the more I hate the sin.
Promise: "I too see what is being done, says the Lord." -Jer 7:11
Praise: St. Bridget's piety and charity blessed many. She was blessed to mother eight natural children, one of whom became a canonized saint.
(For a related teaching on "Evangelization", listen to or download our CD 55-1 and 55-3 or DVD 55-CH. 1, 2, 3, 4, at presentationministries.com or order our tape on audio AV 55-1 and 55-3 or video V 55.)

PERSEVERANCE - One Bread, One Body, 7/22/2016
Friday, July 22, 2016, St. Mary Magdalene
Song of Songs 3:1-4 or, 2 Corinthians 5:14-17, Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9, John 20:1-2, 11-18
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/072216.cfm
PERSEVERANCE
"I will rise then and go about the city; in the streets and crossings I will seek Him Whom my heart loves." -Song of Songs 3:2
When we think of Mary Magdalene, we recall her intense love for Jesus. She received this love from the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22; Rm 5:5). She received the Holy Spirit in such a powerful way because of her perseverance. Just as Elisha received a double portion of Elijah's spirit by persevering in sticking with him (2 Kgs 2:1ff), so Mary Magdalene received the Spirit's gift of love through her perseverance.
When almost all Jesus' disciples had abandoned Him, Mary Magdalene persevered at the foot of the cross (Jn 19:25). When everyone else had left Jesus' tomb, Mary Magdalene persevered and was the first to meet the risen Christ (Jn 20:10-11). Moreover, when she recognized the risen Jesus, she clung to Him (Jn 20:17). Only Jesus' words could break Mary Magdalene's stick-to-it-iveness.
In obedience to her Lord, Mary Magdalene put her hand to the plow and did not look back (Lk 9:62). Jesus promised: "Whoever holds out to the end will escape death" (Mt 10:22). Paul proclaimed: "I put no value on my life if only I can finish my race and complete the service to which I have been assigned by the Lord Jesus" (Acts 20:24). "Watch yourself and watch your teaching. Persevere at both tasks. By doing so you will bring to salvation yourself and all who hear you" (1 Tm 4:16).
Prayer: Father, may I never leave You.
Promise: "The love of Christ impels us who have reached the conviction that since One died for all, all died." -2 Cor 5:14
Praise: St. Mary Magdalene sought Jesus and only Jesus, and was the first recorded person to meet the risen Jesus.

IN LOVE AGAIN
"I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved Me as a bride, following Me in the desert, in a land unsown." -Jeremiah 2:2
Remember when you first fell in love with Jesus? Remember what a joy it was to pray? How you loved to be with God and with His people! How you would praise Him in English and other languages! Remember when...
Many, however, have lost their first love (Rv 2:4). They still believe; they still pray and serve the Lord. But it's not the way it was. "Sluggish indeed is this people's heart" (Mt 13:15). The Spirit is quenched (1 Thes 5:19). The flame is no longer burning bright.
Repent! Return! Revive! Renew! "The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, His mercies are not spent; they are renewed each morning, so great is His faithfulness" (Lam 3:22-23). There's so much more, an eternity of "more" with Jesus. The Lord is saying of you: "I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart...She shall respond there as in the days of her youth" (Hos 2:16-17). Give in, fall into His arms, let Him love you as of old. "Greater will be the future glory...than the former" (Hg 2:9). He calls: "Arise, My beloved, My beautiful one, and come!" (Sg 2:10) Will you love Him again? Will you feel the touch of His nail-scarred hands? "There is no greater love than this" (Jn 15:13). Live in His love (Jn 15:10).
Prayer: "Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All" (see Jn 20:28).
Promise: "To you has been given a knowledge of the mysteries of the reign of God, but it has not been given to the others." -Mt 13:11
Praise: With a burning love for Jesus, St. Lawrence brought souls into the Church in Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Hungary.

THE RADICAL NEWNESS OF LIFE AFTER BAPTISM
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you." -Jeremiah 1:5
For the next two weeks at daily Mass, the Church reads to us from the prophet Jeremiah. Initially, Jeremiah balked at accepting God's call to prophesy. He tried the excuse that he was too young (Jer 1:6). God did not accept this excuse (Jer 1:7). Throughout much of Jeremiah's life, he continued to have problems answering God's call, although he was for the most part faithful to the Lord.
Many Christians can relate to Jeremiah because they too are ambivalent in responding to God's calls. However, Jesus said that every baptized person is greater than Jeremiah (Mt 11:11). Jeremiah never had a new nature, never was a baptized son of God, and never received the body and the blood of Jesus. We live in a covenant whose glory is far beyond anything Jeremiah had ever known (see 2 Cor 3:10). Therefore, we should not relate so much to Jeremiah's ambivalence as to Jesus' faithfulness. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!" (2 Cor 5:17) Live your Baptism radically and fully.
Prayer: Father, may the study of the book of Jeremiah help me appreciate profoundly the radical newness of Baptism.
Promise: "See, I place My words in your mouth!" -Jer 1:9
Praise: The martyr St. Apollinaris was a faithful bishop. He defended Christians to the emperor and Christ to non-Christians.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS
"Show us wonderful signs." -Micah 7:15
The Lord wants to show us signs. One sign for our guilt-ridden world is that the Lord will not only remove our guilt, but also tread it underfoot (Mi 7:18-19). Guilt has a way of weighing on us, but Jesus has a way of stomping on it and thereby freeing us from it. Moreover, in our sin-sick world, sin clings to us (see Heb 12:1) with tentacles that imbed themselves into our flesh. However, Jesus will break the hold of sin in our lives, "cast into the depths of the sea all our sins" (Mi 7:19), and separate our sins from us "as far as the east is from the west" (Ps 103:12). These are two of the countless "wonderful signs" the Lord has shown us.
Jesus has done these "wonderful signs" by taking on human flesh and dying on the cross. We are freed from guilt and forgiven from our sins at the price of Jesus' shed blood and sacrificial death. The "sign of the cross" is the cause of the "wonderful signs" of freedom, forgiveness, victory, and salvation. Therefore, we say with St. Paul: "May I never boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!" (Gal 6:14) We pray with St. Francis of Assisi: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world." Make and live the sign of the cross.
Prayer: Father, may I make the sign of the cross not from habit but in awe.
Promise: "Whoever does the will of My heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to Me." -Mt 12:50
Praise: Patrick repented of his vasectomy, had reversal surgery, and was blessed with two more children.

WHO IS REALLY ON TRIAL?
"God Himself is the Judge." -Psalm 50:6
In all three eucharistic readings today, a type of courtroom scene is portrayed. The prophet Micah announces a cosmic court session. "The Lord has a plea against His people, and He enters into trial with" them (Mi 6:2). He demands to know why His people have turned away from Him, despite all the marvelous deeds and loving provisions He has bestowed on them. God says to His people: "Answer Me!" (Mi 6:3) The psalm response continues the cosmic trial scene. God "summons the heavens from above, and the earth, to the trial of His people" (Ps 50:4).
In the Gospel reading, the "scribes and Pharisees," who would have known Micah 6 and Psalm 50, decide to switch seats with Jesus, attempting to become judge instead of defendant. They heard His preaching, saw His miracles, and were still not satisfied. As self-appointed judges, they want a sign all their own. In effect, the scribes and Pharisees say to Jesus: "Answer Me!" (see Mi 6:3) Jesus doesn't grant their answer in the way they wish, and so they eventually pronounce Him guilty.
The queen of Sheba shows the best way to get an answer from the Lord. She was a queen, but instead of standing on her authority, she sought the truth with openness. She spent a long time with Solomon to gain some of his wisdom. The truth is found by those who seek it. Jesus, the Truth (Jn 14:6), and the Spirit of Truth (Jn 16:13) are likewise found by those who seek with openness and honesty. Therefore, "seek the Lord while He may be found" (Is 55:6).
Prayer: Father, I will seek You "ten times the more" (Bar 4:28).
Promise: "To him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God." -Ps 50:23
Praise: St. Camillus devoted himself to the sick because of his own diseased leg.

PMeNewsletter 16th Sunday in ordinary time
July 17th 16th Sunday in ordinary time.
Jesus, we have all sinned and fallen far from Your presence.
We need to see examples of those who You have touched and
freed them from there sinful ways.
This week, Jesus, Your church celebrates a feast of a lady
who loved You dearly and followed You all the way to the cross.
Mary Magdalene was a sinner who you freed from the clasp of satan.
When she was freed she walked with You everyday for the rest
of Your earthly life.
Give us all that same freedom from serious sin, and help us
to follow You everyday, by picking up our crosses of life,
and knowing that You are with us always.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday M & M
http://www.presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=7/17/2016
"Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him to her home. She had a sister named
Mary." -Luke 10:38-39
Some people say they are like Martha; others say they are like Mary. However, the Lord is not calling
us to be Martha or Mary, but Martha and Mary.
We should imitate Abraham, Sarah, and Martha by making great sacrifices in offering hospitality. Prior
to our high-tech times, a family began preparing a meal by picking out a steer and working with flour
(Gn 18:6-7). No freezer, microwaves, or packaged foods! To offer hospitality was a monumental,
sacrificial task. We can understand why Martha complained about being left alone to do such daunting
household tasks (Lk 10:40).
We also need to imitate Mary by sitting at the Lord's feet and listening to His words (Lk 10:39). This
too is a formidable task. Listening to someone, especially to God, is often more challenging than the
hardest work.
All workers must be listening to the Lord, or they won't know what they're doing or why they're doing
it. All listeners need to do some working. Those who hear God's Word must do God's Word, or they will
be deceiving themselves (Jas 1:22). "Work with anxious concern to achieve your salvation" (Phil 2:12).
Only those who are like both Martha and Mary are like Jesus. Be like Jesus.
Prayer: Father, teach me to work, listen, and sacrifice.

Promise: "Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for you. In my own flesh I fill up what is
lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His body, the Church." -Col 1:24
Praise: All glory, honor, and praise to You, risen Lord Jesus. We worship You forever.
