GOD'S WORD FOR YOU
"Is a lamp acquired to be put under a bushel basket or hidden under a bed? Is it not meant to be put on a stand?" -Mark 4:21
The above Scripture verse instantly transformed my life. While attending a retreat forty-two years ago, a friend wrote an encouraging note to me (see Heb 10:24-25) and concluded it with the above passage. I was intensely shy, attending the retreat only to gain solitude for prayer. My friend observed that God had given me spiritual gifts and a calling to share those gifts with a hurting world. The letter touched me, but it was the words of the Scripture that penetrated my timid heart (Heb 4:12). Rather than experiencing guilt and shame for gifts unused, Jesus' words ignited my heart with the desire of putting His light on the stand for others to see and glorify Him (Mt 5:15-16). Simultaneously, His words infused me with power, giving me a new heart to love others rather than fear them.
Jesus has a Scripture passage for you as well. His Word for you is life-giving (Mt 4:4), liberating (Jn 8:31-32), and sustaining (Heb 1:3). His Word will guide (Is 30:21) and direct your paths (Ps 119:105). Read His Word and find it. Perhaps God has already led you to that special Scripture. Your lamp is lit and you have placed it on the stand. Ask God for more; give that Word to others, and still more will be given to you (Mk 4:24). God surely wants to use you as He used my friend: to sow His Word abundantly (Mk 4:14). The Scripture you sow will not return to God void, but shall achieve His purposes in this world (Is 55:11).
Prayer: Father, may Catholics increasingly hear, love, read, understand, live, and spread Your Word.
Promise: "Let us hold unswervingly to our profession which gives us hope, for He Who made the promise deserves our trust." -Heb 10:23
Praise: St. John Bosco answered his call to lead youth to Christ. He is the patron of apprentices, school children, and juvenile delinquents.

A SOW-SOW HARVEST
"What the sower is sowing is the word." -Mark 4:14
In His parable of the sower, Jesus doesn't mention anything about the farmer except that he "went out sowing" (Mk 4:3). However, we can conclude the following about the sower from Jesus' parable:
* "God's word is living and effective" (Heb 4:12). The seed, that is, the Word of God (Mk 4:14), grew regardless of the skill and holiness of the farmer. God's Word is far greater than those who sow it.
* The only skill the farmer needed was to get out there in the field and put the seed out (see 2 Tm 4:2). Evangelists fail only when they keep the Word of God to themselves.
* The farmer used the broadcast method of sowing, that is, he threw the seed everywhere. Likewise, we evangelists must spread God's Word everywhere (see Mt 24:45). We must never filter out those people we think will not be receptive. Our efforts are never wasted, even if it seems so to us (see Is 49:4; 1 Cor 15:58).
* In Jesus' time, a good harvest was a seven-to eight-fold increase. A "thirty- and sixty- and a hundredfold" harvest (Mk 4:20) is miraculous. God's Word does not return to Him void, but achieves His great purposes (Is 55:10-11).
What might look like barren ground to us who sow can be instantly changed by Jesus into good ground. So, sow!
Prayer: Jesus, I love You. I dedicate myself to feeding Your sheep with Your Word (Jn 21:17).
Promise: "Their sins and their transgressions I will remember no more." -Heb 10:17
Praise: Father John arises three hours before early morning Mass to listen to the Lord, pray, and prepare his heart to give Jesus to others in Word and Eucharist.

LOVE-LIFE
"Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me." -Mark 3:35
God is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). He made us in His image, in the image of Love (Gn 1:27). Therefore, we are made for love and are automatically looking for love. So we are happy if we know we are loved, but are brokenhearted and depressed if we think we are not loved.
Because of His love for us, the Lord wants us to abide in Love and in Him (1 Jn 4:16). Therefore, He became a man, died on the cross for love of us, and rose from the dead for love of us. Thus He has given us an intimacy with Him which is beyond human words and ideas. God the Father has even adopted us as His sons and daughters. If we do His will, we become Jesus' mothers, brothers, and sisters (Mk 3:35). Jesus loves us so much that He gives us His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. He will come back to take us to be with Him in the everlasting love of heaven.
The Lord cannot love us any more than He does. His love for us is infinite, perfect, unconditional, crucified, and eternal. The purpose of our lives is to enter into and live in God's love and "be able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love" (Eph 3:18-19).
Live in love (Jn 15:9-10). Be yourself. Be happy. Live in God forever.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to produce in me the fruit of love (Gal 5:22).
Promise: "I have come to do Your will, O God." -Heb 10:7
Praise: Susan's father hit her several times while she was a teenager. They were estranged for two decades until Susan traveled a thousand miles to forgive him and be reconciled.

JESUS SAVES US - One Bread, One Body, 1/28/2019

JESUS SAVES US
Jesus "entered heaven itself that He might appear before God now on our behalf." -Hebrews 9:24
If we had sinned only once, and if that lone sin was the most seemingly innocuous sin, we are still guilty of breaking God's entire law (Jas 2:10). How could we then, with all our sins, ever get back into God's good graces? Nothing we could do would ever satisfy, make up for, atone, or expiate that one sin, let alone all our sins. We have all sinned and are deprived of the glory of God (Rm 3:23). In our sinfulness, we are filthy rags before God (Is 64:5; Jer 13:1-11). We are in danger of dying in our sins (Jn 8:21, 24) and suffering eternal condemnation in the fires of hell (Mt 25:41). Moreover, we cannot save ourselves (Ps 49:8; Is 26:18). This is bad news.
There is Good News. "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Rm 5:8). He entered heaven on our behalf, for you and for me. He brought His own blood, shed for our sins, before Almighty God to satisfy, make up for, atone, and expiate every one of our sins (Heb 9:24ff). He didn't wait until we repented or even understood the damage our sins caused. He loved us first (1 Jn 4:19). We have only to repent, believe that Jesus loves us this much, go to Confession, and offer our lives to Him in return. "Now that we have been justified by His blood, it is all the more certain that we shall be saved by Him" (Rm 5:9).
Repent! Believe in Jesus' saving love for you. Receive His forgiveness and salvation. Then go and sin no more (Jn 8:11). Live as His disciple and make disciples of all the nations (Mt 28:19).
Prayer: Father, may I think of Jesus crucified if I am tempted to sin.
Promise: "Christ was offered once to take away the sins of many; He will appear a second time not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him." -Heb 9:28
Praise: St. Thomas, like his teacher St. Albert the Great, sought the Holy Spirit.

PM eNewsletter 3rd Sunday in ordinary time
January 25th Third Sunday in ordinary time
Jesus, Your gift of Your presense in the Eucharist should fill us with gratitude and love.
Lord, help us to come and sit with You, and let us do everything we can do to draw others to
Eucharistic Adoration.
Help us to see that everytime we sit with You, You give us a sense of well being, and that well being
helps us walk the talk, and not just talk the talk.
Jesus, help us always be authentic in our lives, by being so in love with You, that You truly become
our center focus, and purpose.
Let us be all that You want us to be, and let us give to all, that all may see the Christ in us.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday GUESS WHAT HAPPENED AT CHURCH TODAY?
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/27/2019
"...entering the synagogue on the sabbath as He was in the habit of doing..." -Luke 4:16
For nearly thirty years, Jesus had habitually entered the synagogue on the sabbath to worship God
(Lk 4:16). Then, on one special sabbath day, the time "of favor" came (Lk 4:19). On that day, the
Holy Spirit anointed and sent Jesus out, Scriptures were fulfilled, Jesus prophesied in power, and
was nearly killed (Lk 4:23ff).
Since Jesus is the same today as He was then (Heb 13:8), He is working in power today, His day, the
Lord's Day. Therefore, we should never be comfortable and complacent walking into Church; rather, we
should approach "the liturgy of the Lord" (Acts 13:2) with trembling, anticipation, reverence, and
awe. At any moment, in any Mass, the Spirit may explode and an international, earthshaking ministry
could be born (see Lk 4:18; Acts 13:2). Great healings (Acts 20:7-12) or life-changing revelations
(Lk 24:30-32) might occur. Miracles will occur, as bread and wine are being transformed into the Body
and Blood of Jesus, Who is God. The proclaimed Scriptures will be fulfilled in the lives of many today
as Jesus comes alive in their hearts and sets them free (Lk 4:18; Jn 8:32).
Today is the Lord's Day, "the first of all days" (Catechism, 2174). "Today is holy to the Lord"
(Neh 8:9). Today the Holy Spirit anoints you (Lk 4:18). Expect today's Mass to be charged with power
as Jesus makes all things new (Rv 21:5) - today.
Prayer: Jesus, may I never be so "familiar" with You that I become like the people of Nazareth and
fail to see You as God.
Promise: "You, then, are the body of Christ. Every one of you is a member of it." -1 Cor 12:27
Praise: "My Lord and my God!" (Jn 20:28)

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
END HUNGER
"WE MUST DO BETTER"
We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to
concrete action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.
WE CAN DO IT
We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become
an action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this
end we need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the
other's problems one's own.
"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"
There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and
this ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all
religious persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and
consists in "doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."

CHRISTIAN RELATIONSHIPS - One Bread, One Body, 1/26/2019
Saturday, January 26, 2019, Sts. Timothy & Titus
2 Timothy 1:1-8 or, Titus 1:1-5, Psalm 96:1-3, 7-8, 10, Mark 3:20-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012619.cfm
CHRISTIAN RELATIONSHIPS
"Paul, by the will of God an apostle of Christ Jesus sent to proclaim the promise of life in Him, to Timothy, my child whom I love." -2 Timothy 1:1-2
St. Paul considered St. Timothy and St. Titus his spiritual children (2 Tm 1:2; Ti 1:4). Paul remembered them in his prayers "constantly, night and day" (2 Tm 1:3). When Paul and Timothy went their separate ways to serve the Lord, Timothy broke into tears (2 Tm 1:4). Paul felt so close to Titus that his very presence lifted Paul's spirits (2 Cor 7:6). Both Timothy and Titus were accountable to and submissive to Paul. Timothy obeyed Paul by staying on in Ephesus although he may have wanted to quit that ministry (see 1 Tm 1:3). Titus obeyed Paul by taking on the exceptionally difficult ministry of appointing presbyters in every town of Crete (Ti 1:5).
Paul's relationships with Timothy and Titus are a good model of authentic Christian relationships. These relationships are Christ-centered, prayerful, submissive, deep, loving, pure, and self-sacrificing. The Lord wants to gift us with these kinds of relationships. If we die to ourselves and obey the Lord, He will give us relationships of unconditional love, permanent commitment, and deep joy. Let Jesus be Lord of all your relationships.
Prayer: Father, may my relationships not be conformed to this world, but transformed by Your Spirit (see Rm 12:2).
Promise: "For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you." -2 Tm 1:6
Praise: "Thanks be to God, Who has put an equal zeal for you in the heart of Titus!" (2 Cor 8:16)
(For a related teaching on "Who Am I in Christ?", order, view, or download our leaflet or order, download, or listen to our four-part series of CDs starting with CD 7A-1 or our two-part series of DVDs starting with DVD 7A on our website.)

Promise: "For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you." -2 Tm 1:6
Praise: "Thanks be to God, Who has put an equal zeal for you in the heart of Titus!" (2 Cor 8:16)

"NOW ALL IS NEW!" (2 COR 5:17) - One Bread, One Body, 1/25/2019
Friday, January 25, 2019, Conversion of St. Paul
Acts 22:3-16 or, Acts 9:1-22, Psalm 117:1-2, Mark 16:15-18

"NOW ALL IS NEW!" (2 COR 5:17)
"The men who were traveling with [Saul] stood there speechless." -Acts 9:7
The conversion of St. Paul is so spectacular, so sudden, and so unexpected that it leaves us awestruck at the sovereign majesty and converting power of the Lord Jesus. Because of the incomprehensible power of Jesus to convert anyone, even the worst of sinners like St. Paul (1 Tm 1:15), each one of us "shall stand speechless" in the sight of God (Is 52:15), "for nothing is impossible with God" (Lk 1:37). Therefore, today's feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul is a sign of great hope for us (see 1 Pt 1:3).
The conversion of St. Paul is so important that it is recorded three times in the Acts of the Apostles. Possibly you have long been praying for the conversion of loved ones, family members, or leaders. I encourage you to read and pray Paul's conversion accounts for the conversion of someone whom you struggle to imagine could ever convert. For example, if you are praying for three people to come to faith in Jesus, pray Acts 9:1-22 for one person, pray Acts 22:3-16 for the second person, and pray Acts 26:1-23 for the conversion of the third.
Jesus has come that all might be saved (1 Tm 2:4). Believe in His converting power. St. Paul, pray for us and all those in need of conversion.
Prayer: "Those things I used to consider gain I have now reappraised as loss in the light of Christ. I have come to rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:7-8).
Promise: "Saul for his part grew steadily more powerful, and reduced the Jewish community of Damascus to silence with his proofs that this Jesus was the Messiah." -Acts 9:22
Praise: The humbled Saul of Taurus may have taken the Baptismal name Paulus because it means "small."

"A MORE EXCELLENT MINISTRY" (HEB 8:6) - One Bread, One Body, 1/24/2019
Thursday, January 24, 2019, St. Francis de Sales
Hebrews 7:25-8:6, Psalm 40:7-10, 17, Mark 3:7-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012419.cfm
"A MORE EXCELLENT MINISTRY" (HEB 8:6)
"Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry now, just as He is Mediator of a better covenant." -Hebrews 8:6
Today's 7AM Mass had forty-three faithful worshippers. That's a pretty good crowd for a morning Mass, but several million people live in the Greater Cincinnati area and most of them are not attending Mass today. Understandably, many are unable to fit Mass into their busy schedules, but others could make the time but are not attracted to Mass.
Jesus is present at this Mass. He is present in the Holy Eucharist (Catechism, 1373). Miracles and healings are undoubtedly happening at this Mass, most particularly at the consecration. However, these miracles are not easily perceived. In today's Gospel passage, Jesus performed visible miracles, such as healings and deliverance (Mk 3:10-11), to the extent that crowds pressed upon Him (Mk 3:10). "A great crowd followed Him" (Mk 3:7).
Though His ministry in Galilee was spectacular, "Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry now" (Heb 8:6). People throng to experience the extraordinary, but Mass deals with the ordinary, such as bread, wine, and Ordinary Time. God calls us to seek Him in the ordinariness of each day, and to accept Him in the ordinary means He chooses to minister. For example, Naaman wanted an extraordinary, customized healing (2 Kgs 5:1ff), but God chose to heal him through the ordinary. So I encourage you to add at least one weekday Mass a month to your schedule. "Seek the Lord while He may be found" (Is 55:6).
Prayer: Jesus, You are not hiding from us, it's just that we are not seeking You where You are. May I turn ten times the more to seek You, beginning today (Bar 4:28).
Promise: "To do Your will, O my God, is my delight." -Ps 40:9
Praise: St. Francis hoped to become a priest. One day, while riding a horse, he fell three times. Each time, his sword and scabbard fell to the ground and landed in the shape of a cross. Francis soon entered the seminary.

SHRIVELED? - One Bread, One Body, 1/23/2019
Wednesday, January 23, 2019, St. Vincent of Saragossa, St. Marianne Cope
Hebrews 7:1-3, 15-17, Psalm 110:1-4, Mark 3:1-6

SHRIVELED?
"He addressed the man with the shriveled hand: 'Stand up here in front!' " -Mark 3:3
Is any part of your life shriveled, withered, atrophied? Do you use the power given by your Baptism to evangelize, heal, free, and feed the broken, starving masses? Are you exercising your spiritual muscles, or are they atrophied because of non-use? Jesus wants to heal you. He wants every part of His body and of our bodies and spirits to work.
Perhaps your ability to produce children is atrophied through the shriveling effects of artificial contraception, sterilization, or abortion. Jesus wants every part of your body to work so that every part of His body can work. Jesus calls you to come to Him and stand up in front of Him (Mk 3:3). He plans to undo the shriveling and withering, and use your reproductive system as He wills.
Many other shriveled people, and even Satan himself, do not want you healed. By faith in Jesus, however, "stretch out your hand" (Mk 3:5). Put your whole life, including the shriveled parts of your life, in Jesus' hands. "The man did so and his hand was perfectly restored" (Mk 3:5).
Prayer: Father, straighten out every area of my life.
Promise: Jesus "said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' The man did so and his hand was perfectedly restored." -Mk 3:5
Praise: St. Marianne spent much of her life ministering the love of God and healing care to lepers on the island of Moloka'i, Hawaii.

NEVER LOSING BY NEVER LOSING HOPE - One Bread, One Body, 1/22/2019

Hebrews 6:10-20, Psalm 111:1-2, 4-5, 9-10, Mark 2:23-28

NEVER LOSING BY NEVER LOSING HOPE
"Like a sure and firm anchor, that hope extends beyond the veil." -Hebrews 6:19
In the Christian life, the old saying is true: "All's well that ends well." Some people are like the good thief who probably lived a terribly sinful life but repented moments before his death (Lk 23:42-43). Others may be like Judas Iscariot, who spent every day with Jesus for three years, but in the end betrayed Christ and committed suicide.
Will each of us persevere in our faith? "Our desire is that each of you show the same zeal to the end" (Heb 6:11). We persevere because we hope. "In hope we were saved" (Rm 8:24). The Lord gives us hope by His promise and His oath (Heb 6:13, 16). "By two things that are unchangeable, in which He could not lie, we who have taken refuge in Him might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope which is placed before us" (Heb 6:18). Not only does faith come through hearing God's Word (see Rm 10:17) but also hope comes by believing God's Word. Believing God's promise and oath, we hold on to hope and refuse to let go until we are home in heaven with our Lord forever. We persevere because we "hope so." "Seize the hope" (Heb 6:18).
Prayer: Father, fulfill my hopes by pouring out Your love in my heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5).
Promise: "I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just." -Ps 111:1
Praise: Believing in the Bible and the Church's teaching saved Theresa from succumbing to despair.

PUNCHING BAG - One Bread, One Body, 1/21/2019

PUNCHING BAG
"On that day they will fast." -Mark 2:20
Many years ago there was an expression: "He couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag." This was a way of calling someone a weakling.
People questioned why Jesus' disciples did not fast. Jesus answered that the fasting by His disciples would be so powerful and extreme that their lives wouldn't be able to take the effects of it. It would be like pouring fermenting, volatile new wine into an old wineskin (Mk 2:22). Only after Jesus' death, Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven culminating in Pentecost would His disciples have the life and lifestyle to contain the explosiveness of New Testament fasting.
* Do you fast?
* Do you fast at least weekly?
* Do you believe that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil? (Gospel of Life, Pope St. John Paul II, 100; cf Mt 17:21, NAB)
* How much punch, wallop, and explosive power does your fasting have?
* Can you fast your way out of a wet paper bag? Can you fast your way out of a culture of death?
Fast and you shall receive.
Prayer: Father, teach me and empower me to fast explosively.
Promise: "He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." -Heb 5:9
Praise: St. Agnes, a twelve-year-old girl, chose to die as a martyr rather than renounce a vow of virginity she made when she gave her life to Jesus.

* Do you fast?

Sunday ON EMPTY?
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/20/2019
"The wine ran out, and Jesus' mother told Him, 'They have no more wine.' " -John 2:3
In John's Gospel, Jesus began His public ministry at a wedding feast where they had "no more wine."
Likewise, many people begin to let Jesus work in their lives when they realize they are out of wine,
love, strength, energy, ideas, or hope. In the weakness of our emptiness, God's power in us can reach
perfection (2 Cor 12:9).
It is literally true that without Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Of ourselves, we are always on
"empty" in the important things in life. Life is an impossible situation. This gradually or at least
eventually becomes obvious. We are doomed to despair. Who can save us? (see Rm 7:24)
Jesus alone is our Savior. "There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the
whole world given to men by which we are to be saved" (Acts 4:12). So the most important thing in life
is to give our lives and our emptiness totally to Jesus. We must take Mary's advice and do whatever
Jesus tells us (Jn 2:5). Jesus is our only Hope.
Hope in His lordship over our lives. Hope through our obedience to Him. He will take us from our
emptiness to the fullness of the wedding feast of heaven (see Rv 19:7). Thank You, Jesus!
Prayer: Father, I rejoice that "absolute fullness" resides in Jesus (Col 1:19).
Promise: "For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her
vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch." -Is 62:1
Praise: Reading and pondering the daily Mass readings have helped George remain constant in his
Catholic faith. He makes it a practice to share his insights on the daily Scriptures with several
people each day. Praise You, risen Jesus, the Living Word. Alleluia!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
END HUNGER
THE CHURCH AND THE POOR
For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways
and through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery
are not different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help
and support them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity
may boast its own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.
"HOPES OF MILLIONS"
The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that
great number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite
and yet recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.
"EFFECTIVE HELP"
The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

ON EMPTY?
"The wine ran out, and Jesus' mother told Him, 'They have no more wine.' " -John 2:3
In John's Gospel, Jesus began His public ministry at a wedding feast where they had "no more wine." Likewise, many people begin to let Jesus work in their lives when they realize they are out of wine, love, strength, energy, ideas, or hope. In the weakness of our emptiness, God's power in us can reach perfection (2 Cor 12:9).
It is literally true that without Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Of ourselves, we are always on "empty" in the important things in life. Life is an impossible situation. This gradually or at least eventually becomes obvious. We are doomed to despair. Who can save us? (see Rm 7:24)
Jesus alone is our Savior. "There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved" (Acts 4:12). So the most important thing in life is to give our lives and our emptiness totally to Jesus. We must take Mary's advice and do whatever Jesus tells us (Jn 2:5). Jesus is our only Hope.
Hope in His lordship over our lives. Hope through our obedience to Him. He will take us from our emptiness to the fullness of the wedding feast of heaven (see Rv 19:7). Thank You, Jesus!
Prayer: Father, I rejoice that "absolute fullness" resides in Jesus (Col 1:19).
Promise: "For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch." -Is 62:1
Praise: Reading and pondering the daily Mass readings have helped George remain constant in his Catholic faith. He makes it a practice to share his insights on the daily Scriptures with several people each day. Praise You, risen Jesus, the Living Word. Alleluia!

HE LOVES THE UNLOVABLE - One Bread, One Body, 1/19/2019

HE LOVES THE UNLOVABLE
"As He moved on He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus, at his tax collector's post, and said to him, 'Follow Me.' Levi got up and became His follower." -Mark 2:14
Although it was a serious sin for a Jew to be a tax collector, Levi chose to be one. Jesus called Levi out of his sinful job and into being an apostle and missionary. If we repent, we can follow Jesus' call even if we are damaged goods, for Jesus comes not for the healthy but for the sick, not for the righteous but for sinners (Mk 2:17). Jesus is a merciful High Priest Who will "sympathize with our weakness" (Heb 2:17; 4:15). He did not come to condemn but to save (Jn 3:17). Even if everyone else rejects us, Jesus will never reject us (Jn 6:37).
There is hope for the human race because of Jesus' mercy - and only because of His mercy. No matter how low we've been, Jesus will take us to heights where we alone could never go. Jesus loves the unlovable. Trust in Jesus. "So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to find help in time of need" (Heb 4:16).
Prayer: Father, give mercy to me and through me.
Promise: "Indeed, God's Word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates and divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart." -Heb 4:12
Praise: Julia did not receive love from her family, but she did find love in Jesus' family and in joining a home based community.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ME? - One Bread, One Body, 1/18/2019
Friday, January 18, 2019
Hebrews 4:1-5, 11, Psalm 78:3-4, 6-8, Mark 2:1-12

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ME?
"I command you: Stand up! Pick up your mat and go home." -Mark 2:11
Will you receive "the promise of entrance" into God's rest (Heb 4:1), that is, will you be with the Lord forever in the perfect happiness of heaven? "Therefore, while the promise of entrance into His rest still holds, we ought to be fearful of disobeying lest any one of you be judged to have lost his chance of entering" (Heb 4:1).
By ourselves, we are unable to obey the Lord and enter eternal rest. We are spiritually paralyzed. Our only hope is to come to Jesus just as we are. We need to be carried to Jesus through the intercession, evangelization, redemptive suffering, and service of the members of His Church (see Mk 2:3ff). Jesus in His mercy will say to us in our spiritual paralysis: "Your sins are forgiven" (Mk 2:5). At this point, we can receive the grace to repent and accept Jesus as our Savior, Lord, and God on His terms. If we are freed from our paralysis and become children of God (Jn 1:12), we will enter heaven where we belong, that is, with our heavenly Father forever.
Jesus is the only Way to our Father in heaven (Jn 14:6). Accept Jesus. "Rise" and "go home" to heaven (see Mk 2:11).
Prayer: Father, may I repent and bring joy to heaven (Lk 15:7, 10).
Promise: "The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." -Mk 2:10
Praise: Being in community has helped Dorothy grow spiritually and remain faithful to the Lord and His Church.

CASUAL DISOBEDIENCE
"Oh, that today you would hear His voice: 'Harden not your hearts.' " -Psalm 95:7-8
Jesus miraculously and instantaneously healed a leper and then gave him a stern warning not to tell anyone (Mk 1:43-44). The man promptly and completely disobeyed Jesus and began to publicize the whole matter (Mk 1:45). This casual attitude toward disobedience has been the curse of the human race from Adam and Eve to the last person going to hell.
All of us recognize this casual attitude toward disobedience in other people. We chide or condemn those who disobey in areas where we may be obeying. Nonetheless, we probably harbor a casual attitude toward disobedience in our own ways. For example, do we obey the Lord by taking up our daily cross (Lk 9:23), tithing, submitting to authority, sacrificing, telling the truth, avoiding occasions of sin, or evangelizing? These commandments are not options, but they are widely ignored.
The fact that the majority of Catholics in the Western world miss Mass on Sundays is symptomatic of a culture of rebellion. The fact that so many contracept shows that we don't just have a problem but a whole culture of death.
When our obedience is complete, however, we have the authority to bring down Satan's strongholds and make every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor 10:4-6). Otherwise, we are trapped in disobedience. For God's sake, and for your sake, obey!
Prayer: Father, teach me obedience, even through suffering if necessary (see Heb 5:8).
Promise: "Encourage yourselves daily while it is still 'today,' so that no one grows hardened by the deceit of sin." -Heb 3:13
Praise: St. Anthony's holiness attracted others, who joined him and became known as the Desert Fathers.

LORD OF OUR DARKNESS
"As evening drew on, they brought Him all who were ill, and those possessed by demons." -Mark 1:32
In today's Gospel, Jesus heals in the evening, in the midst of the darkness (Mk 1:32-34). Jesus entered the darkness to drive the demons out of the darkness. "A people living in darkness has seen a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen" (Mt 4:16).
In today's first reading, Jesus enters the darkness of our fallen human state (Heb 2:14ff). He became one of us. The Almighty God, Whom the universe could not contain (1 Kgs 8:27), became "like His brothers in every way, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest before God on their behalf, to expiate the sins of the people. Since He was Himself tested through what He suffered, He is able to help those who are tempted" (Heb 2:17-18).
Jesus took on our human condition. He bears our afflictions and infirmities (Mt 8:17; Is 53:4). He takes the initiative to come to us not in our strength and beauty, but in our weakness and darkness. Have you ever felt unworthy of God's love? You are not unworthy to Jesus. He came to seek and save the lost (Lk 19:10). He is the Lamb of God, gentle, innocent, and pure, yet He comes to take away the sins of the world, including yours (Jn 1:29).
Jesus stands and knocks at the door of your darkness (Rv 3:20). "Open wide your hearts!" (2 Cor 6:13) Let the Lord enter.
Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, nothing can separate me from Your love, not even the darkness (Rm 8:35-39). Come into my heart right now.
Promise: "Jesus likewise had a full share in [our humanity], that by His death He might rob the devil, the prince of death, of his power." -Heb 2:14
Praise: Jesus delivered David from addiction, thereby changing David's life and the lives of many others.

ORDERED TIME
"Have You come to destroy?" -Mark 1:24
The Church has now entered the season of Ordinary Time. A more precise meaning would be "Ordered Time," for this season of the Church Year is marked by godly order rather than ordinary, boring activity. Today's Gospel shows the impact of God's order coming into a situation. A man in the synagogue is possessed by a demon (Mk 1:23). His life is disordered by Satan and his demons rather than ordered under the freedom and order of the children of God. Jesus casts out the demon and sets this man free. This is no "ordinary" worship service! This man's life is now under the order of God instead of the possession of Satan.
The demon asks Jesus: "Have you come to destroy us?" (Mk 1:24) The answer is a resounding "Yes!" "It was to destroy the devil's works that the Son of God revealed Himself" (1 Jn 3:8). Jesus came to destroy the godless secular culture, sin, death, fear, injustice, hatred, the kingdom of darkness, and all that opposes the reign of God in this world. Jesus destroys so that the foundation site can be clear to build what will last. Jesus is a Carpenter (Mt 13:55), and He knows that a house cannot be built on a disordered foundation (see Mt 7:24-27).
In this season of Ordered Time, cooperate with Jesus as He destroys and builds. Clear out of your life whatever is opposed to God's order. Allow Jesus to destroy whatever He wishes. Be still, and know that He is God (see Ps 46:11).
Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me so much that You send a "Master-Builder" (1 Cor 3:10) to remodel my life. Do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.
Promise: "A completely new teaching in a spirit of authority! He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey!" -Mk 1:27
Praise: Observing the Presentation Ministries' co-worker commitments have put order into Margaret's spiritual life.

NET-WORK
Jesus "observed Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea." -Mark 1:16
Jesus called the fishermen, Simon and Andrew, after observing them casting their nets into the sea. When Jesus called them, "they immediately abandoned their nets and became His followers" (Mk 1:18). He called the next two apostles, James and John, while they were putting their nets in order (Mk 1:19). Nets are mentioned three times in Mark's account of Jesus calling the first four apostles. What is the significance of the nets?
From the fish's point of view, nets are traps which take away the fish's freedom and lead to their death. When we follow Jesus, we must abandon our nets. We must repent of sinful patterns in our lives which have trapped us and brought about our spiritual death. Through repentance, we can be free to follow Jesus.
From the fisherman's point of view, nets are essential to his work. Therefore, these nets need to be in order, and the fisherman must cast them into the sea skillfully and frequently. The nets are our evangelistic outreach. To follow Jesus means to be fishers of men and women (Mk 1:17). To follow Jesus without daily and frequently evangelizing is a contradiction.
All Christians must evangelize. Leave the nets of sin and cast the nets of faith.
Prayer: Jesus, may I not let a day go by without telling someone about Your love.
Promise: "In times past, God spoke in fragmentary and varied ways to our fathers through the prophets; in this, the final age, He has spoken to us through His Son." -Heb 1:1-2
Praise: Peter started a Bible study during his lunch hour at work.
