CUE STICKS

"Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments." -Daniel 3:15

Jesus wants us to be free, for He is the Truth (see Jn 14:6), the Son of Man, Who truly frees us (Jn 8:32, 36). When we renew our baptismal promises on the first day of Easter, we will proclaim our freedom from Satan and our freedom to believe in the Holy Trinity. During the Easter season, we profess and live the ultimate freedom of the risen life. Finally, the Easter season culminates in Pentecost, when Jesus' apostles and disciples were freed from their fears and unbelief to leave the upper room and lead three-thousand people to Baptism into Christ and into the newborn Church.

Jesus wants us to be free from the cues which trigger certain moods and behaviors. For example, King Nebuchadnezzar devised an orchestra to set the tone for his subjects to obey his commands to idolatry (Dn 3:15). Some music is still used to put us in the mood for sin, which is contrary to freedom (see Jn 8:34). TV and other visual stimuli can influence us to modify our behavior and thereby can rob us of our freedom. Nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, and other substances can alter our consciousness in subtle yet enslaving ways.

As we treasure these last days of Lent, let us accept God's grace to clear out of our lives everything which can threaten our freedom, in particular any manipulations, promptings, or cues.

Prayer: Father, give me the freedom of Pentecost.

Promise: "Were God your Father you would love Me, for I came forth from God, and am here. I did not come of My own will; it was He Who sent Me." -Jn 8:42

Praise: Joseph found prayer time with his wife more rewarding than the momentary relief of his former alcoholic binges.

ARE YOU FATHER-CHALLENGED? - One Bread, One Body, 3/31/2020

Tuesday, March 31, 2020

Numbers 21:4-9, Psalm 102:2-3, 16-21, John 8:21-30

ARE YOU FATHER-CHALLENGED?

"They did not grasp that He was speaking to them of the Father." -John 8:27

Here's a quick quiz from the Gospels of last week's Masses. Who is Jesus talking about?

* Today: "I only tell the world what I have heard from Him, the Truthful One Who sent me" (Jn 8:26).
* Yesterday: "You know neither Me nor My ______. If you knew Me, you would know My ______ too" (Jn 8:19).
* Friday: "I was sent by One Who has the right to send, and Him you do not know. I know Him, because it is from Him I come: He sent Me" (Jn 7:28-29).
* Thursday: "His voice you have never heard, His form you have never seen, neither do you have His word abiding in your hearts because you do not believe the One He has sent" (Jn 5:37-38).
* Wednesday: "I am not seeking My own will but the will of Him Who sent Me" (Jn 5:30).

I hope you scored a perfect five out of five on this quiz. The answer to all five questions is, of course: God the Father.

Your homework is to pay close attention to the Gospel readings at Mass the next three days. I challenge you to score a perfect three for three in focusing on the Father these three days. If you do, you'll be imitating Jesus well, for He is always focused on His Father (Jn 5:19). Are you immersed in the presence of the Father? Or will you get all the right answers, but forget about Him when the test is over?

Prayer: Father, never let me forget You even for a moment.

Promise: "When you lift up the Son of Man, you will come to realize that I AM." -Jn 8:28

Praise: Rico cut back his hours at work, and accordingly reduced his income, in order to spend more time with his family.

UN-ADULTERATED - One Bread, One Body, 3/30/2020

UN-ADULTERATED

"The assembly believed them, since they were elders and judges of the people, and they condemned her to death." -Daniel 13:41

We spend our time judging adulteresses rather than fighting adultery and the demons behind it. Our battle is not against human forces but against the principalities and powers, the legions of demons (Eph 6:12). Like Jesus, we should hold our ground against the evil one (Jn 8:6). "Resist the devil and he will take flight" (Jas 4:7).

The first battlefield on which we attack the evil one is our own hearts. We must fight the Pharisee within us (Jn 8:3) and remove the plank from our own eyes (Mt 7:5). Then we can remove specks from others' eyes. When our obedience is complete, we can make every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor 10:5-6).

In summary, our business is to love the sinner but hate the sin, repent personally, or convict and convert others if they delay in repenting. We have the authority and power to do all these things, and therefore we will be successful.

Prayer: Father, this Lent may I do my job and not Yours.

Promise: "Jesus said, 'Nor do I condemn you. You may go. But from now on, avoid this sin.' " -Jn 8:11

Praise: Juan shares his faith with his brother while praying for him to return to the Church.

PM eNewsletter 5th Sunday of Lent

March 29th, Fifth Sunday of Lent

Jesus, Lent is practically over, and we pray that we now know what exactly you want us to give You as an
Easter present.

Lord, what sin or defect of ours do You want that will help free us from the snares and entrapments of
this world?

Jesus, You gave us Lent as a time to pray, fast, and give alms, and You also gave us Lent as a time of
personal growth to You.

Help us to see that You always want us to become more like You, by growing in spirituality, and getting
freed from the ways fo the world.

By this freedom, we will be able to see the needs of others with clear eyes, that see to the heart.

Let us be vessels of love and forgivness to all.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday RESURRECTIONS
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=3/29/2020

"I am the Resurrection and the Life: whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life; and
whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die." -John 11:25-26

How strong is your faith that the Holy Spirit will raise your body from the dead on the last day? (Rm 8:11)
Do you believe your spirit will be raised at your death to meet the Lord? Do you believe Jesus still raises
people from the dead, as He raised Lazarus from the dead? (Jn 11:44; Mt 10:8) Do you believe Jesus'
Resurrection can transform your life now?

Jesus' Resurrection is a promise of the resurrection of the bodies and spirits of all His disciples. Jesus
continues to raise Lazaruses as proofs of His Resurrection and previews of ours. Jesus' past Resurrection
and our future resurrection should overshadow our present circumstances. Risen life begins when we believe
in the risen Lord, not when we die. All the resurrections go together. The Resurrection is past, present,
and future. The Resurrection is physical and spiritual. The Resurrection is historical, personal, and
eschatological.

We are a Resurrection people, or more precisely a resurrections-people. In these next two weeks, prepare to
celebrate the Resurrection with a faith and joy that is unexplainable except for those who have met the
risen Christ.

Prayer: Father, increase my faith in Your risen Son so that I become a new person.

Promise: "I will open your graves and have you rise from them." -Ez 37:12

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who "is the Reflection of the Father's glory, the exact Representation of
the Father's being" (see Heb 1:3).

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that
great number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and
yet recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to concrete
action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

"THE AVENGER OF BLOOD" (NM 35:12)

"Let me witness the vengeance You take on them." -Jeremiah 11:20

The people to whom Jeremiah prophesied were treacherously planning to kill him (Jer 11:19). Jeremiah risked his neck to serve God and wanted God to back him up by taking vengeance on these enemies. In addition, Jeremiah wanted to see it personally.

We Christians have enemies also. Unlike Jeremiah, we do get to witness the vengeance God takes on them. We see:

* Jesus destroying the devil's works (1 Jn 3:8),
* the pride of the powerful crushed as they gaze upon Jesus crucified (see Is 52:15),
* sinners emerging from the confessional with tears of repentance and gratitude as Jesus in His vengeance robs Satan of still more of his former captives (Col 2:15).

God commands in His Word: "Beloved, do not avenge yourselves; leave that to [Me]...'Vengeance is Mine; I will repay' " (Rm 12:19). Yet we can have a role. God's Word tells us: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon his head" (Rm 12:20).

God is perfectly just (1 Cor 1:30; Is 30:18). He is able to punish the wicked until they are forced to choose for Him or against Him (2 Pt 2:9). He can avenge by acting in justice or avenge through mercy. Let's do our part as God's agents so His enemies and ours receive the merciful kind of vengeance from God (Rm 12:20).

Prayer: Father, may the burning coals of kindness I pour on my enemies melt their hearts and lead them to You.

Promise: "No man ever spoke like that before." -Jn 7:46

Praise: Theresa sponsors both Christian and Muslim children through the missions.

YEARS OF BITTER SUFFERING AND PERFECT LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 3/27/2020

Friday, March 27, 2020

Wisdom 2:1, 12-22, Psalm 34:17-21, 23, John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/032720.cfm

YEARS OF BITTER SUFFERING AND PERFECT LOVE

"With revilement and torture let us put Him to the test that we may have proof of His gentleness and try His patience. Let us condemn Him to a shameful death." -Wisdom 2:19-20 "At this they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a finger on Him because His hour had not yet come." -John 7:30

Jesus suffered for love of us not only during His long hours on the cross but also in His three years of public ministry. Even early in Jesus' ministry, there were attempts to kill Him (see Lk 4:29-30). This continued throughout His ministry with even greater intensity (see Jn 7:1, 30; 8:59). Although some people accepted Jesus at least temporarily, for the most part Jesus was the Keystone of the structure Who was rejected by the builders (Mt 21:42; Ps 118:22). Incredibly, Jesus was accused of being in league with the devil (Mk 3:22). Even His relatives thought He was crazy (Mk 3:21). Peter, the leader of Jesus' apostles, denied Jesus three times. Judas betrayed Jesus by selling Him for thirty pieces of silver. Furthermore, Jesus, Who is God and therefore lives outside of time, was rejected and brutalized by the sins of each one of us.

Jesus suffered more than anyone has ever suffered. It is impossible for any creature to conceive of the magnitude of His suffering. Jesus loves more than anyone has ever loved. He is literally Love Himself (see 1 Jn 4:16). As we have personally caused His sufferings, may we take personally His crucified love. Give yourself totally to Jesus and worship Him forever.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to lead me more deeply into the mystery of Christ's sufferings.

Promise: "They knew not the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls' reward." -Wis 2:22

Praise: Bill fasted two days each week on bread and water, and now has both more energy and more joy than before.

A HEART FOR YOUR PROBLEM-PEOPLE

" 'I see how stiff-necked this people is,' continued the Lord to Moses. 'Let Me alone, then, that My wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation.' " -Exodus 32:9-10

God offered Moses the chance to be free from the unfaithful people he led (Ex 32:9-10). These people, the Hebrew nation, continually provoked Moses, yet Moses loved them deeply. Moses spent forty years in the desert loving and leading his people, but they often rebelled and grumbled against him. However, instead of gaining freedom from this burdensome people when God gave him the chance, Moses interceded for their salvation and asked God to be merciful to them (Ex 32:11ff).

Jesus likewise acted like Moses. His people turned their backs, not their faces, to His love. Although Jesus could have returned to the bliss of heaven and left us to a future "without hope and without God in the world" (Eph 2:12), He pleaded before God on our behalf (1 Jn 2:1), a Priest representing His people before the throne of the Father (Heb 2:18; 4:16). Jesus even offered His life as a sacrifice on behalf of His sinful, ungrateful people.

What about us? Is there a person in your life who is a burden to you? What if God offered to kill your current spouse and give you a loving, tender spouse who would appreciate you? The same offer could apply to a parent, sibling, or child. Could you act as did Jesus and Moses and remain sacrificially faithful to that burdensome person?

Fall on your knees in gratitude before the Lord (see Lk 17:15-16). Thank the Lord forever for His never-failing love. Then ask Him for the grace to love others as He loves us (see Jn 15:13).

Prayer: Father, bring me to the next level of sacrificial love. May my love for the people in my life reflect Your love for them.

Promise: "These very works which I perform testify on My behalf that the Father has sent Me." -Jn 5:36

Praise: Besides giving money, Robert prays with beggars.

"Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God." -Isaiah 7:11

Throughout this Lenten season, the Lord promises abundant, resurrected, eternal life. Do we believe Him? Will we let the Holy Spirit of Easter and Pentecost come upon us? (Lk 1:35) Will we let the power of the Most High overshadow us? (Lk 1:35) Will we say with Mary, "I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say"? (Lk 1:38)

We need a sign to strengthen our faith. Gabriel announced the sign to Mary that Elizabeth in her old age had conceived a son (Lk 1:36). "The Lord spoke to Ahaz: ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be as deep as the nether world, or as high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask!' " (Is 7:10-12) May we not be closed as Ahaz but be open to the sign of signs. "The Lord Himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and He shall be called Immanuel" (Is 7:14).

May the Annunciation be a Lenten sign that Easter and Pentecost are not merely holidays but realities. When God became man and was conceived in the womb of Mary, it was and is a sign that God loves us infinitely, we have nothing to fear, the future is glorious, and nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Rm 8:35).

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for becoming a man. Mary, pray for me to say "yes" as you did.

Promise: "By this 'will,' we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." -Heb 10:10

Praise: Mary's role in salvation history is prefigured in the Hebrew Scriptures. "Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth" (see Jdt 13:18).

ROOTED IN THE STREAM - One Bread, One Body, 3/24/2020

Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12, Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9, John 5:1-16

ROOTED IN THE STREAM

"They shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary." -Ezekiel 47:12

The fruit trees growing along the river in Ezekiel's vision represent us as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ and as sons and daughters of the Church. We are to be disciples who offer the food of the Word of God and the medicine of the healing of God to a hurting world, which desperately needs the Good News of salvation and liberation in Jesus Christ.

The trees in Ezekiel's vision are life-giving and healing because they are watered "by the flow from the sanctuary," the Church (Ez 47:12). Without the gift of the Holy Spirit, the world in which we live is like a desert, "parched, lifeless and without water" (see Ps 63:2). It is from the flow of grace that we disciples minister. Apart from Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). In the grace of the Holy Spirit, all things are possible for us (see Mt 19:26).

The desert is the world in which we live. God's plan is to lead us to the restful waters of the Church (see Ps 23:2). There we find rest and food for our souls. If we try to operate apart from the river of grace, we'll soon be as dry and lifeless as the surrounding desert. Is ministry too hard for you? Do you think you need a break from the Church? Stay planted firmly beside the river. Keep your roots in the Church. The Holy Spirit will flow through you, keep you refreshed, and bring life to a hurting world.

Prayer: Father, anchor me in the Church and never let me be parted from You.

Promise: "God is our Refuge and our Strength, an ever-present Help in distress. Therefore, we fear not." -Ps 46:2-3

Praise: John and Carol actively began planning their divorce. Then their son was arrested. Jesus used this situation to unite the couple in prayer for their son and restore their commitment to one another.

WILL YOU HARVEST EASTER JOY? - One Bread, One Body, 3/23/2020

Monday, March 23, 2020, St. Toribio de Mogrovejo

Isaiah 65:17-21, Psalm 30:2, 4-6, 11-13, John 4:43-54

WILL YOU HARVEST EASTER JOY?

"At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing." -Psalm 30:6

Yesterday was Laetare Sunday, meaning Rejoice Sunday. We are rejoicing because we are getting close to Easter, the celebration of the risen Christ, and a deepening of our relationship with Him.

Today, the Church calls us to hear: "There shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create; for I create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight; I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in My people" (Is 65:18-19). The Lord promises us that we will have everlasting joy, be a joy as His people, and be a joy for Him.

Joy is the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22). Because it is a fruit, it is an end product of a process of growth. Because it is a fruit, it takes some time for it to be produced. The Holy Spirit is at this moment in the process of producing the fruit of joy in our lives. The Spirit is calling us to be unselfish so that we can rejoice always (Phil 4:5). The Spirit is lusting against (Gal 5:17) and crucifying the flesh so that we will not stifle in selfishness the joy of the Spirit (see 1 Thes 5:19). The Spirit is also giving us the privilege of suffering for Jesus. In these sufferings, we find our joy (Col 1:24; see also 1 Pt 4:13).

The Holy Spirit is growing a great Easter harvest of joy. Will you be the seed that falls to the earth and dies so as to joyfully bear abundant fruit? (see Jn 12:24)

Prayer: Father, may I receive joy and be a joy for You.

Promise: "He and his whole household thereupon became believers." -Jn 4:53

Praise: St. Toribio was the first known saint in the New World in Lima, Peru. The Spanish conquerors were guilty of oppression of the native people where abuses among the clergy were flagrant. He became a Christ-like shepherd to these people.

PM eNewsletter 4th Sunday of Lent

March 22nd, Fourth Sunday of Lent

This week, Jesus, we celebrate the feast of the start of the journey of our faith to You.

The Annunciation, Mary's accepting the path of life that made her the mother of God.

This week, St. Gabriel, the archangel, came and told Mary that see could change the worlds path of
history, if she would accept the role of being the mother of Jesus.

Her words of acceptance started salvation history for all of us.

Thank You Jesus, for so great a mother who was so willing to trust the Fathers plan for us all.

Help us all also follow the plan You have for each of us.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday BLIND MAN'S BLUFF
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=3/22/2020

"Some of the Pharisees around Him picked this up, saying, 'You are not calling us blind, are You?' "
-John 9:40

Jesus told the Pharisees they were blind. He called them blind guides and blind fools
(Mt 23:16, 17, 24, 26). He called the apostles blind when He exclaimed: "Are your minds completely blinded?
Have you eyes but no sight?" (Mk 8:17-18) Jesus called the whole church of Laodicea blind (Rv 3:17).

Jesus may be calling us spiritually blind right now. How will we take Jesus' diagnosis of our condition?
Will we become defensive, or will we thank Jesus for telling us the truth? The Pharisees got angry at Jesus
for calling them blind. They blinded themselves (see Is 29:9) to being blind. They resented the man cured
of blindness and threw him out of the synagogue (Jn 9:34). They even tried to impose blindness on everyone
else. The Pharisees became so blind that they became darkness (see Eph 5:8). As darkness, they hated the
light (Jn 3:20). They hated Jesus, "the Light of the world" (Jn 9:5), and demanded He be crucified.

Spiritual blindness is degenerative. It turns into darkness and violence. We must admit our spiritual
blindness (2 Cor 4:4) and ask Jesus to heal us. Otherwise, we will hurt and even crucify our Healer
(see Heb 6:6) and those whom He has healed of spiritual blindness. Let Jesus heal you from being blind to
your spiritual blindness.

Prayer: Father, today on this Lenten Sunday, scrutinize my heart and free me from blindness before it
becomes worse.

Promise: "Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart."
-1 Sm 16:7

Praise: "Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of
Jesus may also be revealed" (2 Cor 4:10). Praise You, Jesus!

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"

There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and this
ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all religious
persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and consists in
"doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways and
through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are not
different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support
them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its
own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

Jesus told the Pharisees they were blind. He called them blind guides and blind fools (Mt 23:16, 17, 24, 26).

The Pharisees got angry at Jesus for calling them blind. They blinded themselves (see Is 29:9) to being blind. They resented the man cured of blindness and threw him out of the synagogue (Jn 9:34). They even tried to impose blindness on everyone else. The Pharisees became so blind that they became darkness (see Eph 5:8). As darkness, they hated the light (Jn 3:20). They hated Jesus, "the Light of the world" (Jn 9:5), and demanded He be crucified.

Spiritual blindness is degenerative. It turns into darkness and violence. We must admit our spiritual blindness (2 Cor 4:4) and ask Jesus to heal us. Otherwise, we will hurt and even crucify our Healer (see Heb 6:6) and those whom He has healed of spiritual blindness. Let Jesus heal you from being blind to your spiritual blindness.

Prayer: Father, today on this Lenten Sunday, scrutinize my heart and free me from blindness before it becomes worse.

Promise: "Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart." -1 Sm 16:7

Praise: "Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed" (2 Cor 4:10). Praise You, Jesus!

ONLY THE HUMBLE LOVE THEMSELVES - One Bread, One Body, 3/21/2020

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Hosea 6:1-6, Psalm 51:3-4, 18-21, Luke 18:9-14

ONLY THE HUMBLE LOVE THEMSELVES

"Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled while he who humbles himself shall be exalted." -Luke 18:14

The Pharisee's prayer was not pleasing to the Lord because he was not humble. One sign of lacking humility is to compare ourselves with others. "The Pharisee with head unbowed prayed in this fashion: 'I give You thanks, O God, that I am not like the rest of men - grasping, crooked, adulterous - or even like this tax collector' " (Lk 18:11).

It is obvious that to put others down to make ourselves look better is a comparison steeped in pride. However, it is also contrary to humility to compare ourselves unfavorably to others. To think that we aren't as good as someone else is not focusing on our God-given uniqueness, is not seeing ourselves the way the Lord wants us to see ourselves, and is not being humble. Humility is not humiliation. "With humility, have self-esteem; prize yourself as you deserve" (Sir 10:27). Humility is to see ourselves as utterly dependent on God and as redeemed, chosen, precious, priestly, and royal (see 1 Pt 2:9). Therefore, neither favorable nor unfavorable comparisons of ourselves with others are in accord with humility.

Throughout the Lenten season and especially in Holy Week, we focus on the Passion and death of Jesus. Our meditation on the crucified Christ must not make us hate ourselves for sharing through our sins in such a despicable crime. Our focus on Christ crucified should fill us with thanksgiving that we are so loved and with awe that we are considered so precious by the Lord.

Humble yourself to love yourself.

Prayer: Father, as I meditate on Your Son's Passion and crucifixion, send the Holy Spirit to teach me the meaning of humility.

Promise: "Let us know, let us strive to know the Lord; as certain as the dawn is His coming, and His judgment shines forth like the light of day!" -Hos 6:3

NOW AND NEVER - One Bread, One Body, 3/20/2020

Friday, March 20, 2020

Hosea 14:2-10, Psalm 81:6-11, 14, 17, Mark 12:28-34
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/032020.cfm

NOW AND NEVER

"Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! Therefore you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." -Mark 12:29-30

The Lord is saying things to us today He's said surely a hundred times. He says: "Return to Me" (see Hos 14:2), and "love Me with all your heart" (see Mk 12:30). It can be difficult for us to respond to these words. They're familiar enough to be forgotten. But this Lent, after these days of prayer and fasting, maybe we'll hear God for the first time in a long time. Maybe we'll let Him love us freely and heal our defection (Hos 14:5). Maybe we'll obey the first and the greatest commandment after all these years of "playing church" and playing games with a crucified Savior (see Mk 12:28).

The Lord is waiting for us to come down off the throne and let Him be the King and Lord of our lives. Sure, we've gone to Church, prayed, and even obeyed some of the commandments; but Jesus died on the cross for more than that. He wants our lives, our all. He wants us. Yes, sooner or later God will break through in our lives. May it be sooner, this Lent, even now.

Prayer: "Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All" (see Jn 20:28).

Promise: "Jesus approved the insight of this answer and told him, 'You are not far from the reign of God.' " -Mk 12:34

Praise: God broke through into Jonathan's life at his first Communion. He developed a lifelong habit of daily prayer.

A SURROGATE? - One Bread, One Body, 3/19/2020

Thursday, March 19, 2020, St. Joseph

2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14,16, Romans 4:13, 16-18,22, Psalm 89:2-5, 27,29, Matthew 1:16, 18-21,24, or Luke 2:41-51

A SURROGATE?

"Did you not know I had to be in My Father's house?" -Luke 2:49

From a purely human viewpoint, it would appear that St. Joseph was a "surrogate" father to Jesus. When Jesus was twelve, Joseph received a blunt reminder from his Foster-Son that Jesus' real Father was God the Father, not Joseph (Lk 2:49).

From a purely human viewpoint, it would appear that St. Joseph was a "surrogate" husband to Mary. Her Son Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Mary's true Spouse (Lk 1:35). Joseph's celibate relationship with Mary would have been ongoing evidence that Mary belonged to the Holy Spirit rather than himself.

Joseph could have been tempted to feel like a "second fiddle" as a father and husband. Yet God did not regard Joseph as a surrogate father and husband. From all the men ever created, God chose St. Joseph for the critical role of protector and guardian of the Holy Family. Mary didn't consider Joseph as second-rate. She instantly obeyed his lead on multiple occasions. It was Joseph whom God warned to flee to Egypt and then return to Nazareth from Egypt. When Jesus was found in the Temple, Mary used the words "Your father and I....", showing that she regarded Joseph as the father of the Holy Family (Lk 2:48). Jesus returned from the Temple and obeyed Joseph (Lk 2:51).

Mary, Jesus, and God the Father all placed the highest trust in Joseph, and Joseph succeeded. This is no surrogate, second-fiddle father and husband. The plan of salvation succeeded in large part because of Joseph's instant obedience, complete trust, and extraordinary humility. May each of us imitate St. Joseph daily.

Prayer: Father, may I decrease so that Jesus may increase (see Jn 3:30).

Promise: "All depends on faith, everything is grace." -Rm 4:16

Praise: "Observe, my son, your father's bidding, and reject not your mother's teaching" (Prv 6:20). St. Joseph, pray for us!

LIVING NOW IN THE LAST AND GREATEST DIMENSION - One Bread, One Body, 3/18/2020

Wednesday, March 18, 2020, St. Cyril of Jerusalem

LIVING NOW IN THE LAST AND GREATEST DIMENSION

"Whoever fulfills and teaches these commandments shall be great in the kingdom of God." -Matthew 5:19

The Lord in the Old Covenant commanded His people to obey 613 commandments. Of course, they were unable to obey them. In the New Covenant, the Lord has much higher standards. We must obey not only the smallest part of the letter of the Law (see Mt 5:18) but also its spirit (2 Cor 3:6). We must obey not only the Ten Commandments but also the Beatitudes. Moreover, Jesus forbids some acts which were previously allowed, such as anger, divorce, swearing oaths, retaliation, and hating enemies (see Mt 5:21ff). If necessary, we are to resist temptations to disobey by plucking out our eyes, cutting off our hands, or even laying down our lives (see Mt 5:29-30).

If you are a "do-it-yourselfer," Jesus' extreme demands are very disturbing. How can you do it? But if you are like Mary and know that life is "letting it be done" (see Lk 1:38) rather than "doing it yourself," then you are excited to be taken by Jesus into a new dimension of grace, miracles, and mystery. The most important aspects of life, including death, are beyond our merely human capacities. We need Jesus to take us into the realm of the supernatural. Why not start now in living the miraculous grace of our Baptism? Let Jesus do the impossible in you.

Prayer: Father, in this Lent teach me the "radical newness" of Baptism (see Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10).

Promise: "What great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon Him?" -Dt 4:7

Praise: St. Cyril was Bishop of Jerusalem during the Fourth Century. He fostered the development of the holy city as a pilgrimage center for all Christendom. Twice he returned from exile to serve his diocese of Jerusalem.

UNPRECEDENTED RECONCILIATION - One Bread, One Body, 3/17/2020

Tuesday, March 17, 2020, St. Patrick

Daniel 3:25, 34-43, Psalm 25:4-9, Matthew 18:21-35

UNPRECEDENTED RECONCILIATION

"Should you not have dealt mercifully with your fellow servant, as I dealt with you?" -Matthew 18:33

Twenty years ago, on the first Sunday of Lent, March 12, 2000, Pope St. John Paul II did something shocking. He asked for forgiveness of the sins committed by Catholics throughout the centuries. This event was prepared for by a study of the International Theological Commission. In this study, the Commission stated: "In the entire history of the Church there are no precedents for requests for forgiveness by the Magisterium for past wrongs" (1:1). Pope St. John Paul II continued this unprecedented, radical initiative for reconciliation a week later when He realized His dream of visiting the Holy Land. There He again apologized to the Jewish people and even inserted this apology in the wailing wall in Jerusalem. This act was of unfathomable, symbolic significance.

This great movement of the Spirit in forgiveness and reconciliation continues to sweep across the face of the earth. Are you fulfilling your ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18) in your family, church, neighborhood, and workplace? Are you forgiving seventy times seven times? (Mt 18:22) Are you forgiving from your heart? (Mt 18:35) Are you breaking new ground in forgiveness and reconciliation?

Prayer: Father, let the Holy Spirit of forgiveness work through me.

Promise: "But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received." -Dn 3:39

Praise: St. Patrick loved his enemies and so led them to Jesus. St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to the pagans of Ireland, pray for all who are embracing the culture of death in Ireland today.
