COMMUNION OF SAINTS ALIVE
"See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God! Yet that is what we are." —1 John 3:1

When my son was a seminarian, he had major knee surgery on All Saints Day morning. As we returned to his dorm room from the hospital, I was privileged to see the “communion of saints” in action. A group of seminarians visited him for the purpose of making him laugh. Two others stopped by to pray the Divine Office with him in the evening. Another seminarian dropped in to pray a rosary with him. Yet another kept him supplied with food and drink. Several left him their phone numbers with instructions to call at any hour of the night. One of the priests brought him Holy Communion. The living saints in his seminary community took care of his every spiritual, social, and physical need.

As powerful as is this earthly “communion of saints...we who live...in no way have an advantage over those who have” died (1 Thes 4:15). This is because, as Jesus so clearly stated to those who disputed the resurrection of the body, “all are alive for” God (Lk 20:38). In the Mass and in our prayers, we saints who are living in Christ share an unbroken fellowship with the saints who have died — “through Him, with Him, and in Him.” Thus the seminarians who prayed with my son invoked the prayers of several canonized saints in heaven. These young men requested prayer support from these saints with just as much confidence as they would have talked to a living seminarian standing in the room. We are all connected in the Body of Christ. “Neither death nor life...will be able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord” (Rm 8:38, 39).

Prayer: Father, may I relate to every member of Your family, whether in heaven or on earth, as You would have me do.

Promise: "Beloved, we are God's children now." —1 Jn 3:2

Praise: All Saints in heaven and still here on earth, pray for us.

JOY ON DEATH ROW
"I have full confidence that now as always Christ will be exalted through me, whether I live or die." —Philippians 1:20

When St. Paul wrote to the Philippians, he was on death row and very happily awaiting his execution. He was looking forward to dying and being with Christ (Phil 1:23). If, however, Paul would be spared death and/or released from prison, that would mean “productive toil” for the Gospel (Phil 1:22), and this would be good too.

Paul was in a great mood because no matter what could happen to him, it would be good. If we sat on death row, most of us would be beside ourselves, depressed, and fearful. Paul felt differently because all that mattered to him was that Christ be proclaimed “in any and every way” (Phil 1:18). To Paul, “life” meant Christ, hence, dying was so much gain (Phil 1:21). Living for Christ was a joy, whether this meant working for Him, or dying for Him.

Paul showed us that the secret of happiness is not favorable circumstances but being in love with Jesus. The Lord’s love covers a multitude of sins (1 Pt 4:8). It gives us joy in the midst of sorrows. God’s love never fails (1 Cor 13:8).

Prayer: Jesus, may Your love make me forget about myself and my problems.

Promise: "For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted." —Lk 14:11

THE PROPHECY OF A LIFESTYLE
"My prayer is that your love may more and more abound, both in understanding and wealth of experience, so that with a clear conscience and blameless conduct you may learn to value the things that really matter, up to the very day of Christ." —Philippians 1:9-10

Paul prayed that the Philippians would “learn to value the things that really matter.” He wanted their relationship with Christ to shine a light on their priorities, surpass them in importance, and cause them to reappraise all as loss (Phil 3:7-8). Once the Philippians forfeited everything because of their love for Jesus and accounted all else rubbish, Christ would truly be their Wealth (Phil 3:8). Thus they would have learned to value the things that really matter by valuing the One Who really matters, Jesus Christ.

Do your priorities seem insane to those “set upon the things of this world”? (Phil 3:19) Are others surprised or even threatened by the changes in your life? Are you worth persecuting? (see 2 Tm 3:12) Has your relationship with Jesus had a dramatic effect on your lifestyle? Does your life make sense only to those who know Jesus personally? Are you “crucified to the world”? (Gal 6:14) Do you “find that the world hates you”? (Jn 15:18) Is your lifestyle in the same Spirit as that of the early Church after Pentecost?

Unless Jesus is Lord of our lifestyle, He’s not Lord of our lives.

Prayer: Father, may my lifestyle be a clear prophecy of Your presence, love, and truth.

Promise: "He took the man, healed him, and sent him on his way." —Lk 14:4

Praise: Anne lives on contributions of her Home-based Community, volunteering for the Lord's work full-time.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE
"Stand firm against the tactics of the devil." —Ephesians 6:11

“Stay sober and alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Pt 5:8). The devil hates us. He wants to use us to show his hatred of Jesus. His plan is to deceive, enslave, use, abuse, degrade, kill, and damn us. Therefore, “our battle is not against human forces but against the principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits in regions above” (Eph 6:12).

We are in extreme danger, but we need not be afraid because in Christ the Church has authority over all demons (see Mt 10:1). We will have victory if we:

  • draw our “strength from the Lord and His mighty power” (Eph 6:10),
  • “put on the armor of God” (Eph 6:11),
  • “stand firm against the tactics of the devil” (Eph 6:11),
  • “do all that [our] duty requires” (Eph 6:13),
  • by faith “extinguish the fiery darts of the evil one” (Eph 6:16),
  • resist the devil with the two-edged sword of the Spirit using the Word of God and prayer (Eph 6:17-18),
  • pray and fast (Mt 17:21), and
  • obey the Lord and His Church (see 2 Cor 10:6).

Obey the Lord and His Church, and you will see the Lord quickly crush Satan under your feet (Rm 16:20).

Prayer: Father, put Your Word on our lips that we "may courageously make known the mystery of the gospel" (Eph 6:19).

Promise: "Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord." —Lk 13:35

Praise: Philip resisted a particular temptation for years and was then delighted to find God removed it.

APOSTOLIC SUCCESS-ION - One Bread, One Body, 10/28/2020

APOSTOLIC SUCCESS-ION
"At daybreak He called His disciples and selected twelve of them to be His apostles." —Luke 6:13

Jesus went up the mountain, prayed all night long in communion with God, and, as the sun rose, chose the twelve who were to be His apostles (Lk 6:12-13). By this dramatic setting, Luke indicates that the apostles were very important in God’s plan. In fact, the Church is founded on them (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14).

The early Church believed that the apostles were to have successors. Through the bishops of the Church (cf Acts 1:20-22), the apostolic ministry would continue as an essential part of the order of the Church and of God’s plan of salvation. Apostolic succession was an almost universally accepted belief of the Church for 1,500 years up to the time following the Protestant Reformation. Some Protestants deny apostolic succession. The splintering of the Church into thousands of denominations and the weakening of the Church through the Enlightenment and secular humanism has certainly not confirmed the denial.  Today we have even more reason to believe that the apostolic ministry continues through the bishops of the Church.

This means that bishops are important, and that it is vitally important for us to know and submit to their teachings. The truth of apostolic succession also indicates that the Pope, as the bishop of all bishops, is very important. By obeying the Pope and the bishops, we will know the truth which will set us free (Jn 8:32), be united as members of Christ’s body, and truly build the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

Prayer: Father, may it make a significant difference to me that the Church is apostolic.

Promise: "You are strangers and aliens no longer. No, you are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God." —Eph 2:19

Praise: "Glory be to this only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Majesty, too, be His, might and power from ages past, now and for ages to come. Amen" (Jude 25).

FREE, JOYFUL SUBMISSION
"Be submissive to one another out of fear of Christ. Wives should be submissive to their husbands as if to the Lord." —Ephesians 5:21-22, our transl.

The most important thing in life is to do God’s will. To do God’s will is our food (Jn 4:34). Without doing His will, we do not enter His kingdom (Mt 7:21). He who does God’s will is “brother and sister and mother” to Jesus (Mt 12:50). “By this ‘will,’ we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Heb 10:10).

A major question in life is: “Am I doing God’s will?” Most of the time we can know whether we are doing God’s will because He has revealed His will to us through the Church and especially her Scriptures. Yet there are often times when we don’t definitely know God’s will. In these cases, we must either discern His will and follow our consciences or be in submission to God-given authority. When we follow our consciences, we aren’t always sure whether we are in God’s will. When we are in submission to those whom God has given authority over us, we are sure we are in God’s will.

Submission is a gift which guarantees we are doing God’s will. Submission gives us freedom and joy. Rejoice in the gift of submission.

Prayer: Father, through submission make me free and not co-dependent.

Promise: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church. He gave Himself up for her to make her holy, purifying her in the bath of water by the power of the word." —Eph 5:25-26

Praise: Robert and Ann have planned a date night regularly even as their family grew. They trust the Lord to bless their marriage with His ever-increasing grace.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF SEXUAL PURITY
"No fornicator, no unclean or lustful person...has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." —Ephesians 5:5

God’s Word speaks boldly to a society wallowing in sexual sin.

1)      Our holiness forbids the mention of “lewd conduct or promiscuousness or lust of any sort” (Eph 5:3).

2)      Not only obscene but silly or suggestive talk is out of place (Eph 5:4).

3)      We should replace such talk with words of thanksgiving (Eph 5:4).

4)      An unclean or lustful person is in effect an idolator (Eph 5:5).

5)      No lustful person “has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God” (Eph 5:5).

6)      People will use “worthless arguments” to deceive us about sexual morality (Eph 5:6).

7)      Sexual sins “bring God’s wrath down on the disobedient” (Eph 5:6).

8)      We are to “have nothing to do with” sexual sins (Eph 5:7).

9)      We are to go to extremes to resist the temptation to look lustfully (Mt 5:28).

10) “Whoever rejects these instructions rejects, not man, but God” (1 Thes 4:8).

The Lord not only commands us to resist sexual temptations but gives us the grace to do so. By His grace, we can be pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Prayer: Father, may I be "pure and follow the Lamb wherever He goes" (Rv 14:4).

Promise: "Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles on the sabbath?" —Lk 13:16

Praise: Jane and her godly friends dress alike, modestly (see 1 Jn 3:3).

PM eNewsletter 30th Sunday in ordinary time

October 25th 30th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, it is good for us to pray for all those who have died and gone before us.

Give us the inspiration to pray especially for those in purgatory who have no one to pray for them.

Let us be aware that those in purgatory depend on us to get them into the glory of heaven through our
prayers, masses, and the charitable acts that we do for there release.

Jesus, continue to grace us to understand that our brothers and sisters who have gone before us have
changed into eternal beings that are now in the communion of saints forever and ever.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday QUESTION BOX
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-10-25-en

"When the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled in a body; and one of them, a
lawyer, in an attempt to trip Him up, asked Him..." -Matthew 22:34-35

Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment. He answered not only by giving the greatest commandment
but also the first one, the second one, and the basis of the whole law and of the prophets (Mt 22:37-40).
When we ask Jesus a question, we often get much more than we bargained for. That's why we may feel afraid
to ask Him questions (Mk 9:32).

Jesus may be "too much" for us (Mk 6:3). He will give us more than we can ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20).
That means we're not in control of everything. The Lord will be Lord of our questions. In fact, He wants to
be Lord of everything, including our lives. At the name of Jesus, every knee must bend (Phil 2:10).

Nonetheless, I challenge you to ask Jesus a question. Be prepared to not be prepared and not be in control.
Be prepared to be loved and surprised, to repent and obey.

Jesus alone is the Answer. Therefore, when we ask Jesus a question, we can expect something special. Go
ahead; dare to ask Jesus a question.

Prayer: Jesus, I will trust You enough to ask and receive (Mt 7:7).

Promise: "The word of the Lord has echoed forth from you resoundingly." -1 Thes 1:8

Praise: "Just as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will come to life again" (1 Cor 15:22). Risen Jesus, how
can we thank You enough for Your sacrifice? We are all Yours.

QUESTION BOX
"When the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled in a body; and one of them, a lawyer, in an attempt to trip Him up, asked Him..." —Matthew 22:34-35

Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment. He answered not only by giving the greatest commandment but also the first one, the second one, and the basis of the whole law and of the prophets (Mt 22:37-40). When we ask Jesus a question, we often get much more than we bargained for. That’s why we may feel afraid to ask Him questions (Mk 9:32).

Jesus may be “too much” for us (Mk 6:3). He will give us more than we can ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). That means we’re not in control of everything. The Lord will be Lord of our questions. In fact, He wants to be Lord of everything, including our lives.

Go ahead; dare to ask Jesus a question.

Prayer: Jesus, I will trust You enough to ask and receive (Mt 7:7).

Promise: "The word of the Lord has echoed forth from you resoundingly." —1 Thes 1:8

Praise: "Just as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will come to life again" (1 Cor 15:22). Risen Jesus, how can we thank You enough for Your sacrifice? We are all Yours.

“A TIME TO UPROOT THE PLANT” (Eccl 3:2) - O=?utf-8?Q?ne_Bread,_One_Body,_10/24/2020?=

"A TIME TO UPROOT THE PLANT" (Eccl 3:2)
"Through Him the whole body grows." —Ephesians 4:16

God began His cultivation of the earth in the Garden of Eden (Gn 2:8ff). Man was assigned to care for the Garden of Eden, but man and woman didn’t care for the garden. Instead, they cared for their own curiosity. So man was banished from the garden. Then Jesus came and restored man’s access to God’s gardening. To do this, Jesus had to be betrayed, suffer anguish, and be arrested in a garden, Gethsemane. Finally, “in the place where [Jesus] had been crucified there was a garden” (Jn 19:41).

Mary Magdalene on the morning of the Resurrection thought Jesus was the Gardener (Jn 20:15). In a way, she was correct. Jesus restored the garden and made it surpass even the original beauty of Eden. He now calls us to join Him forever in “the garden of God” (Rv 2:7).

We are to grow from little plants (Eph 4:12-15) to full, fruitful plants. Jesus the Gardener gives us everything needed to flourish in His garden. But we don’t have unlimited time to bear fruit. There is a time of reaping fruit from our lives (see Lk 13:8-9). We have a merciful Gardener Who gives us every opportunity, and does so far more patiently than most gardeners ever will. So let us surrender all to the cultivation of Jesus the Gardener.

Even if we have had many fruitless, sinful years of life, Jesus the Gardener can make our lives beautiful and fruitful — by His grace and not our efforts. Like Mary, let it be done to us according to God’s will.

Prayer: Father, do in me whatever You must, to do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "Let us profess the truth in love and grow to the full maturity of Christ the Head." —Eph 4:15

Praise: St. Anthony Claret is known as the spiritual father of Cuba. In his popular missions he placed emphasis on the Eucharist and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

THE SEVENFOLD UNITY - One Bread, One Body, 10/23/2020

Ephesians 4:1-6
Psalm 24:1-6
Luke 12:54-59

THE SEVENFOLD UNITY
"Make every effort to preserve the unity." —Ephesians 4:3

From prison, St. Paul pleaded with his Christian brothers and sisters to “live a life worthy” of their calling (Eph 4:1). This meant being humble, meek, long-suffering, and lovingly forbearing (Eph 4:2). This radically different way of life was necessary to preserve and deepen the early Church’s unity in the Spirit (Eph 4:3). The priority was unity in the body, unity in the Spirit, and unity in hope; unity in the Lord, faith, and baptism, and unity in the God and Father of all (Eph 4:4-6). This sevenfold unity is still necessary for our lives to be worthy of our calling by the Lord.

Jesus is continuing to pray that we be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Despite centuries of disunity among the various Christian denominations; despite millions of people not living their marriage vows or living together without making marriage vows; despite an almost total disregard for a practical living out of our baptismal brotherhood and sisterhood; despite the utter divisiveness and disunity of sin, the Lord will never change (see Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8). He wants us in unity with Him and with each other. We must be united even if we have to die for it, because He already has died for it (Jn 11:51-52).

Repent! Live a worthy, humble life of unity.

Prayer: Father, give me Your heart for the unity of all Christians.

Promise: "There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, Who is over all, and works through all, and is in all." —Eph 4:5-6

Praise: Have you ever been drawn to an exceptional preacher? St. John lived during a time of religious apathy, yet defied the odds by attracting tens of thousands of listeners to his sermons. He and twelve of his fellow Franciscans were instrumental in the renewal of a dying faith in Central Europe.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
"I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray." —Ephesians 3:14-16

Today’s first reading is possibly the greatest family prayer ever. It teaches us that, when we pray for our family and others, we should first of all pray for “gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory” (Eph 3:16). Family life is humanly impossible. We must admit this and then pray for supernatural gifts from God.

The demands of family life are overwhelming. The only way we will survive is by asking for and receiving inward strength “through the working of His Spirit” (Eph 3:16). We need not only divine gifts and inward strength, but we need God Himself to reside in our family (Eph 3:17). We bring this about by inviting Jesus into our hearts through faith (Eph 3:17). With God actually living in our family, love can now be the root and foundation of our family life (Eph 3:17), for God is Love (1 Jn 4:16). Because “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Pt 4:8) and “never fails” (1 Cor 13:8), our families will be holy families, built up in love (Eph 4:16).

This may seem impossible to you, but God’s “power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine” (Eph 3:20). So start praying the family prayer in Ephesians 3:16-17. Keep praying and obeying. Your family will be so transformed that, when you have a family reunion in heaven soon, not one family member will be missing.

Prayer: Father, may my family "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love" (Eph 3:18-19).

Promise: "I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!" —Lk 12:49

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II beatified 1,338 people and canonized 482 saints in his long papacy. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. He is credited with the collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

NOW IS THE TIME (see 2 Cor 6:2)
"My Master is taking His time about coming." —Luke 12:45

Each day is the time when Christ comes. Jesus teaches that instead of trying to know the time of His return or our death, we are to live each day, and indeed each moment, as though the Master could return. If we strive to live like that, we will be “confident and unafraid” (Is 12:2; see also Eph 3:12). The Lord is here — present at every Mass in the Holy Eucharist, present in His Word, His people, His creation. He is Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23). When we serve the least of His people, Jesus has made it clear we are serving Him (Mt 25:40, 45).

“Why delay, then?” (Acts 22:16). Serve Jesus now. Live for Him now. Today, this moment, “turn now ten times the more to seek Him” (Bar 4:28).

Yes, the Lord expects much. Yet He gives even more. Jesus said that to whom much has been given, much will be expected (Lk 12:48). The fruit Jesus expects from us flows through us because of the Holy Spirit living in us (see Gal 5:22). His burden is light and His yoke is easy (Mt 11:30). So, “seek to serve Him constantly” (Ps 105:4). “Now is the time!”

Prayer: Father, I trust in the Holy Spirit's ability to make me Your faithful and willing instrument more than I trust in my own weaknesses. Fill me with the Holy Spirit right now.

Promise: "In Christ and through faith in Him we can speak freely to God, drawing near Him with confidence." —Eph 3:12

Praise: Carson doesn't search high and low for a person to minister to. He believes God wants him to converse with the person by his side. It is an excellent opportunity to be Jesus to the world. "Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus."

KNOCK, KNOCK
"Be like men awaiting their master's return from a wedding, so that when he arrives and knocks, you will open for him without delay." —Luke 12:36

Jesus says that when we knock, the door will be opened for us (Mt 7:7). God neither sleeps nor slumbers (Ps 121:4); He is always ready to answer our knocking. Scripture also reveals that Jesus knocks on our door. He says: “Here I stand, knocking at the door” (Rv 3:20). Will we open for Him without delay? (Lk 12:36)

We are to make the most of the present opportunity (Eph 5:16). To do so, we must be expecting a knock on our door, so that we have the chance to open to the Master. Simeon was expecting the Messiah; God had informed him in advance (Lk 2:26). Accordingly, Simeon was prepared and ready when Jesus came into his life. Anna the prophetess did not have the benefit of advance warning. However, she was also immediately ready to greet the Lord and speak of Him (Lk 2:38ff). Likewise, the Gospel readings give us the forewarning to be constantly ready and vigilant to answer the Lord’s knock.

Pope St. John Paul II frequently exhorted: “Open wide the doors to Christ!” It is likely a prophecy that two of the most prolific healers of the Twentieth Century were doorkeepers. St. André Bessette and Fr. Solanus Casey spent years as doorkeepers in their religious orders. They were ready to hear and answer the Lord, opening wide their doors to Christ and His hurting people. Many thousands of people were healed through their ministry of answering the knocking on their door. They were trained to listen, open, and respond. Let us “go and do the same” (Lk 10:37).

Prayer: Father, open my ears, eyes, and heart so that I will always be ready for You in every moment.

Promise: "It is [Jesus] Who is our Peace." —Eph 2:14

Praise: St. Paul of the Cross was inspired by meditating upon the sufferings of Jesus. He founded the Passionists.

RICH IN CHRIST - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2020

RICH IN CHRIST
"Teacher, tell my brother to give me my share of our inheritance." —Luke 12:13

In the ancient world, receiving an inheritance was a make-or-break deal for the rest of one’s life. Not getting his share of the inheritance he was entitled to could have possibly doomed this man to poverty. Was Jesus insensitive to this man’s request to have his brother share the inheritance he had coming? It sounds that way.

Yet Jesus has a heavenly perspective. He is trying to persuade people to focus on what does not fade away. He is concerned with higher things (see Col 3:2). What matters to Jesus is so different than what humans spend so much time on: our security, wealth, etc.

At least five times in today’s readings the word “rich” is used:

1)      “There was a rich man” but he was ultimately labeled a “fool” by Jesus (Lk 12:16, 20).

2)      Though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist in possessions (Lk 12:15).

3)      ...the immeasurable riches of His grace in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus (see Eph 2:7, RNAB).

4)      “God is rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4).

5)      Try to be rich in what matters to God (Lk 12:21), in contrast to the rich man, who grew rich for himself.

You cannot serve both God and money (Mt 6:24). You are rich because of Jesus (2 Cor 8:9). Spend your life building treasure in heaven (Mt 6:20).

Prayer: Father, teach me to seek Your way of holiness (Mt 6:33).

Promise: "He brought us to life with Christ when we were dead in sin. By this favor you were saved." —Eph 2:5

Praise: St. Isaac and his companions returned to save their torturers' souls.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday AND ALL THE TRAPPINGS
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-10-18-en

"Then the Pharisees went off and began to plot how they might trap Jesus in speech." -Matthew 22:15

The disciples of the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking Him the question: "Is it lawful to pay tax to
the emperor or not?" (Mt 22:17) If Jesus would answer: "Pay taxes to Rome," He would lose His popularity
with the masses of simple people who comprised the great majority of His followers. These simple folks
were Jews who naturally opposed their conquerors and oppressors, the Romans. The Pharisees encouraged
Jesus to disappoint His followers by reminding Him that He didn't court anyone's favor or act out of human
respect (Mt 22:16). But Jesus did not answer: "Pay taxes to Rome."

On the other hand, if Jesus answered: "Don't pay taxes to Rome," He would keep His popularity with the
masses but get in trouble with Rome. Jesus' opposition to Roman taxation would then be dutifully reported
to Roman officials by the Herodian sympathizers present for the occasion (see Mt 22:16). But Jesus did not
answer: "Don't pay your taxes."

What did Jesus do? Did He evade the question? No. Instead, He became the Questioner rather than the
questioned. Through His questions (Mt 22:18-20), He may have convicted the Pharisees and their disciples of
their sinful compromise with the oppressive Roman government. To merely hold a Roman coin was a convicting
experience for an orthodox Jew who considered the graven image on a coin idol worship. To simply say the
name "Caesar" left a bad taste in the mouth of a Jew. Jesus' would-be trappers may have realized they were
trapped. "Taken aback" by Jesus' reply, "they went off and left Him" (Mt 22:22).

Prayer: Father, on this World Mission Sunday, take me captive to do Your will so that I will escape the
devil's trap (2 Tm 2:26).

Promise: "Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power."
-1 Thes 1:5

Praise: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory!

AND ALL THE TRAPPINGS
"Then the Pharisees went off and began to plot how they might trap Jesus in speech." —Matthew 22:15

The disciples of the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking Him the question: “Is it lawful to pay tax to the emperor or not?” (Mt 22:17) If Jesus would answer: “Pay taxes to Rome,” He would lose His popularity with the masses of simple people who comprised the great majority of His followers. These simple folks were Jews who naturally opposed their conquerors and oppressors, the Romans. The Pharisees encouraged Jesus to disappoint His followers by reminding Him that He didn’t court anyone’s favor or act out of human respect (Mt 22:16). But Jesus did not answer: “Pay taxes to Rome.”

On the other hand, if Jesus answered: “Don’t pay taxes to Rome,” He would keep His popularity with the masses but get in trouble with Rome. Jesus’ opposition to Roman taxation would then be dutifully reported to Roman officials by the Herodian sympathizers present for the occasion (see Mt 22:16). But Jesus did not answer: “Don’t pay your taxes.”

What did Jesus do? Did He evade the question? No. Instead, He became the Questioner rather than the questioned. Through His questions (Mt 22:18-20), He may have convicted the Pharisees and their disciples of their sinful compromise with the oppressive Roman government. To merely hold a Roman coin was a convicting experience for an orthodox Jew who considered the graven image on a coin idol worship. To simply say the name “Caesar” left a bad taste in the mouth of a Jew. Jesus’ would-be trappers may have realized they were trapped. “Taken aback” by Jesus’ reply, “they went off and left Him” (Mt 22:22).

Prayer: Father, on this World Mission Sunday, take me captive to do Your will so that I will escape the devil's trap (2 Tm 2:26).

Promise: "Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power." —1 Thes 1:5

Praise: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory!

32 TIMES ALL EQUALS 100
God "has made [Jesus]...Head of the church, which is His body." —Ephesians 1:22-23

As I write this, a speaker quoted a statistic that only thirty-two percent of registered Catholics in the USA attend Sunday Mass. Our Catholic Church is emaciated. Our spiritual arteries are blocked. Our lifeblood, that is, the Precious Blood of Jesus, is literally not circulating throughout the full body.

Jesus cares deeply about any wounded area of His body. He would leave the ninety-nine in the “wasteland” to save the one missing (Lk 15:4). We are in the 32% going to Sunday Mass. The word Mass means “sent.”  We are being sent to the 68% who are not coming to Mass (Mt 10:16).

Thirty-two percent won’t reach sixty-eight percent by a partial effort. If we insist on holding back anything from Jesus, then we’re like spiritual cholesterol that blocks the other 68% from receiving Jesus’ life. When we give less than all to Jesus, soon we’re down to 32%. It takes all-giving to be all-reaching. When we give to the full, we’ll see life to the full (Jn 10:10).

Repent of giving Jesus less than your all. He has given His all to you. Give your all to Him. Then distribute His life to the members of the Church (see Eph 1:18). Go to them, and “do not worry” about “what to say. The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said” (Lk 12:11-12).

Prayer: "May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, grant you a spirit of wisdom and insight to know Him clearly" (Eph 1:17).

Promise: "Whoever acknowledges Me before men — the Son of Man will acknowledge him before the angels of God." —Lk 12:8

Praise: St Ignatius was a pillar of the early Church. He was the third Bishop of Antioch, St. Peter having been the first. While he traveled to Rome where he was martyred, he authored seven influential letters. As death neared, he said, "I prefer death in Christ Jesus to power over the farthest limits of the earth."
