A SENSE OF BELONGING
"Do no harm to the land or the sea or the trees until we imprint this seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God." —Revelation 7:3

Will you be a saint with Jesus forever in heaven? Will you be reunited with your family and friends who are saints in heaven? Or will you be eternally separated from the Lord and His saints? If you died today, what would happen to you? Imagine standing before heaven’s gate and Jesus is asking you: “Why should I let you into heaven? Do you belong here?” What would your answer be?

We belong in heaven because we belong to Jesus. In Baptism and by a life of faith, we have been imprinted with “the seal of the living God” (Rv 7:2). This is a seal of ownership. We are God’s property. We belong to Him.

At first, we may not like the idea of being God’s property. Yet we don’t have objections to being the property of a professional football team, a corporation, or the military. For example, a football player is sold for cash, or traded for a draft pick or other players. A corporate executive is moved four times in six years. A soldier is forced to risk his life in battle. We ought to be much more willing to have the privilege of belonging to the Lord.

On this great holy day, become a slave of Christ (Col 3:24). Offer your body to Him (Rm 12:1). May your life no longer belong to you but to Him (Gal 2:20).

Prayer: Jesus, I decide to belong to You. I am Yours, all Yours.

Promise: "See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God!" —1 Jn 3:1

Praise: Alleluia! Saints of God, praise the Lord!

KEEPING YOUR SUNDAY OBSERVANCE?
"They observed Him closely." —Luke 14:1

Well, in one sense, the Pharisees certainly kept their “eyes fixed on Jesus” (Heb 12:2). “They observed Him closely” (Lk 14:1).

They observed where Jesus was seated and then placed the man with dropsy “directly in front of” Him (Lk 14:2). Sadly, their hearts were so closed to mercy that they had no compassion for the dignity of the poor suffering man, inviting him only for the purpose of challenging Jesus to break the Sabbath rest by performing a healing. This is evidenced by the fact that Jesus understandingly relieved the man of his awkwardness by sending him on his way after healing him, though the meal wasn’t over (Lk 14:4). That poor man had suffered enough, but the Pharisees did not observe his embarrassment nor Jesus’ graciousness.

When you observe Jesus for the purpose of fitting Him into your plans, you can “look intently as you will, you shall not see” (Mt 13:14). This is because you “have firmly closed [your] eyes” to Who Jesus truly is (Mt 13:15).

Repent of any allegiance to the secular culture, to the “god of the present age,” which blinds you to the truth about Who Jesus is (2 Cor 4:4). Ask God for the ointment of the Holy Spirit of truth “if you would see once more” (Rv 3:18). Then, freed of spiritual blindness, you “may see and know, observe and understand” that Jesus is Lord (Is 41:20).

Prayer: "Lord...I want to see" (Lk 18:41).

Promise: "He sends forth His command to the earth; swiftly runs His word!" —Ps 147:15

Praise: Arthur refused to allow his children to watch network TV or objectionable movies. He wanted his children to see the best the Church had to offer, free of the baggage brought by secular entertainment. When his son reached adulthood, he entered the seminary.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE
"Is it possible that He Who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for the sake of us all will not grant us all things besides?" —Romans 8:32

“Nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37). Nonetheless, the good news is that some things are not possible for God.

It’s impossible for Him to love us any more or any less. He loves us infinitely and unconditionally. It’s impossible for Him not to respond with love to our every prayer, for He is Love (1 Jn 4:16). He’ll respond either as we requested or with something better. It’s impossible for our heavenly Father not to grant us all things besides (Rm 8:32). It’s impossible for God to be against us, even if we do things against our better interests (Rm 8:31). It’s impossible for Him to forsake us. He will never let anything separate us from His love (Rm 8:35). He’ll love us eternally even if we separate ourselves from Him by choosing self and hell. It’s impossible for God’s Word not to be true or His promises not to be fulfilled.

What’s not possible for God is possible for us. We can choose to accept His love or to not respond to His love. Salvation and damnation are both possible for us. Therefore, give your life to Him, the Lord and Savior.

Prayer: Abba, You have created me. You have called me by name, and I am Yours (see Is 43:1).

Promise: "Today and tomorrow I cast out devils and perform cures." —Lk 13:32

Praise: Through her faithfulness to her intercessory ministry, Barbara lives the Scripture passage that "Nothing is impossible with God."

WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES OF SALVATION?
"Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?" —Luke 13:23

The person who asked this question of Jesus was probably asking: “What are my chances of being saved?” Moreover, after hearing Jesus’ response, the questioner was probably thinking that his chances were not that good if only a few people would be saved.

Jesus did not give the impression that it was easy to be saved. Jesus said: “Try to come in through the narrow door” (Lk 13:24). He also said that many will seek “to enter and be unable” (Lk 13:24). Jesus also implied that being in the Church, praying, and being taught the faith do not guarantee us entry into His kingdom (Lk 13:26-27). Also, Jesus will say to some: “Away from Me, you evildoers!” (Lk 13:27) This will come as a surprise, for “some who are first will be last” (Lk 13:30).

On the other hand, “some who are last will be first” (Lk 13:30). “Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets” will be “safe in the kingdom of God” (Lk 13:28). “People will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and will take their place at the feast in the kingdom of God” (Lk 13:29). Also, “we know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love” Him and are called according to His decree (Rm 8:28). Finally, Jesus wants all people to be saved (1 Tm 2:4), and He died on the cross to save all. Consequently, we have reason to be confident of our salvation, but not presumptuous. Repent, believe Jesus, and give your life to Him.

Prayer: Father, may I make any sacrifices necessary to lead as many people as possible to You (see 1 Cor 9:19).

Promise: "The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us." —Rm 8:26

Praise: Raymond prays for his parish family while cleaning his parish church building each week.

PATRONS OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY - One Bread, One Body, 10/28/2025

PATRONS OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY
Jesus "selected twelve of them to be His apostles:...Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James…" —Luke 6:13, 15-16

Today’s saints are the apostles Sts. Simon and Jude. Each had the same name as a more widely known apostle. Simon the Zealot shared a name with Simon Peter, the leader of the apostles. Judas Thaddeus (also called Lebbaeus in Mt 10:3, KJV) shared a name with Judas Iscariot, “who betrayed” Jesus (Mk 3:19). Jude is a nickname given to Judas Thaddeus for fear of otherwise having to say “St. Judas” rather than “St. Jude.” One might call Simon and Jude the patrons of mistaken identity. Yet they are part of the foundation of the Church (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14). These two were leaders chosen by Jesus (Mt 10:1-4; Mk 3:13-19; Lk 6:12-16). We all benefit from their blessed leadership.

We Christians often have mistaken identities (see 1 Cor 4:9-13). We are called hypocrites, intolerant, haters and fanatics. Our parents, family, friends, and children who do not believe in Christ think we are something other than who we are in Jesus. They cannot see our true identity in Christ (1 Cor 2:14). They can’t overlook our history or our past sins. They identify us with a stereotype rather than giving us a chance to be who we are in Christ. Sts. Simon and Jude understood this well.

In Jesus, we are no longer strangers (Eph 2:19). Our identity is in Him (see Acts 17:28). God knows and loves us completely (see Ps 139:1-3). That was enough for Simon and Jude to be glorious saints, adopted children of God, powerhouses in the kingdom of God. Let your identity always be securely rooted in your relationship with Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, grant that my identity would always be in You alone.

Promise: "In [Jesus] you are being built into this temple, to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit." —Eph 2:22

Praise: According to tradition, St. Simon was preaching in North Africa at the time he was martyred. He was said to have been killed by being sawn in half. St. Simon, pray for us.

NO VACANCY
"If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live." —Romans 8:13

To follow Christ, we must deny ourselves (Lk 9:23) and crucify our flesh with its passions and desires (Gal 5:24). We must discipline our bodies so as to master them (1 Cor 9:27). This seems to call for great will power. Nonetheless, overcoming our self-centered flesh is not done by our power or might but by the Holy Spirit (Zec 4:6). We “put to death the evil deeds of the body” not by will power but by Spirit-power (Rm 8:13). “The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; the two are directly opposed” (Gal 5:17).

The Spirit strongly opposes our pleasure-seeking desires. Thus, if we “live in accord with the Spirit,” we “will not yield to the cravings of the flesh” (Gal 5:16). For example, how did the flesh get us to give up our prayer time for the last two days? We did not make an act of the will to reject prayer, but we merely didn’t find time to pray. So how would we give up overuse of our phones, TV, alcohol, caffeine, gossip, etc.? We do this by choosing the things of the Spirit and other things thereby get pushed out of our lives. The desires of the flesh breed in a vacuum, in emptiness. In a Spirit-filled life, there’s no vacancy for the flesh.

Prayer: Father, I'm busy and cluttered, but I'm not filled. Fill every aspect of my life with the Holy Spirit.

Promise: Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles on the sabbath?" —Lk 13:16

ALL POURED OUT
"I for my part am already being poured out like a libation." —2 Timothy 4:6

St. Paul, near the end of his life, said that he was “being poured out like a libation” (2 Tm 4:6). A libation is the act of pouring a liquid offering onto the ground, usually in a religious ceremony. The act of libation seems like a waste of good oil or wine (see Gn 35:14; Lv 23:13). Similarly, to those without faith, it seems a misuse of talent to spend one’s life serving the Lord. But to those with faith, this is not a waste but a libation, a life poured out in service to God.

This is how God relates to us. He pours out the Holy Spirit on us (Rm 5:5), whether or not we bother to receive it. He pours out the rain on the just and the unjust (Mt 5:45). The crucified Jesus did not hold back any drops of His blood.

In God’s service, we humbly empty ourselves (Phil 2:7). We are called to pour it all out, to empty ourselves, like a libation (see Phil 2:17). There’s nothing left in the chalice once the libation is poured out.

Imitate Jesus. Pour yourself out. Offer yourself fully to Him. Hold nothing back. Be poured out like a libation to the Lord (2 Tm 4:6).

Prayer: Father, I pour out my life for You. I trust You to fill me up again.

Promise: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves." —Ps 34:19

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, Divine Logos, for watering the earth with Your all-powerful Word (Is 55:10-11).

THE FRUIT OF LOVE
"He came out looking for fruit." —Luke 13:6

Jesus commands us to bear the fruit of holiness and evangelization, or we will be “cut down” (Lk 13:9) and “thrown in the fire and burnt” (Jn 15:6). In other words, we can potentially go to hell for not living and sharing the faith.

Jesus is so strict about this because He is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16) and therefore wants all people to be saved (1 Tm 2:4) from sin, death, and hell by believing in Him. Because of sin, the whole world is under condemnation to fear, slavery, self-deception, guilt, self-hatred, anger, and violence. Jesus, in His love, has died on the cross and risen from the dead to save us from this terrifying condemnation. Then, He made us missionaries and messengers of this Good News. In His love, He must insist that we give the following message to a condemned world: “There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit, the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, has freed you from the law of sin and death” (Rm 8:1-2).

If we love God and other people, we will be missionaries. If we do not love, we are “among the living dead” (1 Jn 3:14). Love, and bear the fruit of evangelization.

Prayer: Father, in love may I bear constant, abundant fruit (see Jn 15:5).

Promise: "If the Spirit of Him Who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then He Who raised Christ from the dead will bring your mortal bodies to life also, through His Spirit dwelling in you." —Rm 8:11

Praise: Jane overcame her fear and gave witness to how God had worked in her life.

SPRINGTIME IN OCTOBER
"Why can you not interpret the present time?" —Luke 12:56

Most of the time it’s possible to predict the weather. Jesus claimed it was also possible to interpret the signs of the times (Lk 12:56). What are the signs of our times? What time is it spiritually?

Pope St. John Paul II prophesied it is early “springtime” for the Church (Mission of the Redeemer, 86). This means we have weathered a long, cold spiritual winter. Some have spiritually died during this winter; others are starving, sick, or weakened. We must reach out to resurrect, nourish, and heal our Christian brothers and sisters. We should also tell them the good news that, although early spring sometimes looks like winter, it is still spring. We have the certain hope of new life. “For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the dove is heard in our land” (Sg 2:11-12).

Although we may be getting ready for winter in the calendar year, winter is over in the spiritual calendar. The dove, the Holy Spirit, is singing a new song of new life in our land. Come, Holy Spirit of springtime!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me to read the signs of the times.

Promise: "Who can free me from this body under the power of death? All praise to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" —Rm 7:24-25

Praise: St. Anthony Mary Claret not only gave missions himself, he founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

DIVIDING IN ORDER TO UNITE
"I have come for division." —Luke 12:51

Christ gathers. He died “to gather into one all the dispersed children of God” (Jn 11:52). Though He came to gather and unite, Jesus said that He came to cause division in families in the sense that He shines His light of truth on each family member (Lk 12:52-53). In their free will, some family members have chosen not to listen to the voice of truth.

Satan divides; his purpose is to cause disunity. Satan does everything in his power to divide and isolate. This is as Jesus said: “I see an enemy’s hand in this” (Mt 13:28). After sowing disunity and dissension (see Mt 13:25), the evil one insolently dares to blame the problems on the Lord, Who is the One working to gather and unite.

So when Jesus says “I have come for division,” He is working to first divide family members from their attachment to evil. That foundational work must be done before the actual uniting and building work can begin. Jesus, the Living Word, “divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow” (Heb 4:12). He does surgery upon each person, judging “the reflections and thoughts of the heart” (Heb 4:12), much like a surgeon divides cancer cells from healthy cells, to remove the cancer from the person’s body.

Assist the Lord in His work of gathering and uniting. Allow Him to divide and detach you from any attachments which divide you from union with God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I surrender completely to You. Do in me whatever You must so You can do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "Now that you are freed from sin and have become slaves of God, your benefit is sanctification as you tend toward eternal life." —Rm 6:22

Praise: For several decades, St. John of Capistrano traveled many miles through Central Europe, preaching missions and renewing devotion in an area devastated by the plague.

LOVE TO WAIT
"That servant is fortunate whom his master finds busy when he returns." —Luke 12:43

St. Peter was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:19). He saw the risen Lord on the day Jesus rose from the dead. Peter was even warned several times to be vigilant and faithful in his mission because Jesus, his Master, might take His time coming back (Lk 12:45; Mt 25:5, 19). Though Peter was given much (Lk 12:48), he couldn’t wait a few weeks for Jesus. So shortly after Jesus’ Resurrection, Peter went back to work in his commercial fishing boat (Jn 21:3).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus warned Peter that the servant “who knew his master’s wishes but did not prepare to fulfill them” would “get a severe beating” (Lk 12:47). Yet when Jesus returned to check on His servant Peter, He didn’t give him that beating. Instead, Jesus gave Peter a miraculous catch of fish and cooked breakfast for him (Jn 21:6, 13). This time, Jesus had no teaching or parable for Peter. He simply asked Peter: “Do you love Me?” (Jn 21:15)

Waiting a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years for Jesus to come along won’t be a problem if we love Him enough. If we love Jesus, we will be immersed in dispensing the Word of God to His lambs in our midst (Jn 21:15; Lk 12:42). If we love Jesus, we won’t misuse the gifts and privileges God has given us on our own pleasures (cf Lk 12:45ff). Vigilance and waiting come naturally to those in love (Sg 3:1-3; 5:2). “The love of Christ impels us” (2 Cor 5:14) to spread the Word of God. Jesus asks each of us: “Do you love Me?”

Prayer: Father, pour out Your love in my heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5) so that I may wait in joyful hope.

Promise: "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth." —Ps 124:8

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II made it a priority to be present at multiple World Youth Day events, bringing the hope of the Gospel to millions of young people worldwide.

IT'S YOUR TURN
"I tell you, He will put on an apron, seat them at table, and proceed to wait on them." —Luke 12:37

There is a reversal of roles in today’s Gospel passage. For a master to serve slaves would turn the social order of the time upside down (Lk 12:37). Yet Jesus washed His disciples’ feet to be an example for them (Jn 13:5, 15). Jesus turned the world upside down through His death and Resurrection (see Rm 5:19ff). The missionary apostles also turned the world upside down (see Acts 17:6, RSV-CE). The Bible is filled with one good turn after another.

We disciples of Jesus are to be always vigilant, alert for the Master’s return (Lk 12:36). In the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, God turns heaven and earth upside down, returning every day to serve us and wait for us to return to Him. He returns in the poor and needy, in the wounded and broken. Jesus returns in His Mystical Body, the Church.

How upside down is this? The Master serves, the King of the Universe appears humbly in the form of bread and wine, the weak are strong (2 Cor 12:9-10), the proud are humbled, and the poor and meek inherit the land (Mt 5:5). The Kingdom of God is not the kingdom of this world (Jn 18:36). It is upturned, upside-down soil that allows the seed to germinate, grow, and bear fruit. Let Jesus do any upturning and upheaval needed. Let Him turn your family, workplace, marriage, and life upside down. In Jesus, upside down is right-side-up.

Prayer: Father, may I not take the role of victim but of victor.

Promise: "Despite the increase of sin, grace has far surpassed it." —Rm 5:20

Praise: Tim and Bernadette attend Mass and Eucharistic Adoration together several mornings each month.

INDEPENDENCE DAY
"I will say to myself: You have blessings in reserve for years to come. Relax!" —Luke 12:19

The man in today’s Gospel was already rich (Lk 12:16). He had several grain bins on his property (Lk 12:18). It had been a year since his last harvest, and still he had no room to store this year’s harvest. Therefore, his grain bins contained at least a year’s foodstores in reserve. Then he “had a good harvest” (Lk 12:16), so large he was bursting at the seams. God blessed this man in ways foretold by the prophets (see Am 9:13-14; Is 30:23-25).

Yet this man’s speech reveals his heart (Lk 6:45). Though rich, he was worried about his future. He could have thanked God for a bountiful harvest; instead, he told himself he was finally financially secure enough to “relax” (Lk 12:19). He could have shared his plenty with the hungry, thus growing rich for God. Instead, he only thought of growing rich for himself (Lk 12:21).

When deciding how to handle his harvest, he consulted himself rather than God. Now he would be self-sufficient, independent of a God he never mentions or thanks. His actions and words show he does not trust the very God Who continues to bless him so abundantly, Who cannot be outgiven, and Who continues to provide for him. In His mercy, God reserved a place for this man and all others who insist upon being independent of Him “for years to come” (Lk 12:19). It’s called hell.

We could also fall into this “trap” of desiring to be secure for the rest of our life (1 Tm 6:9). Repent! Trust in God alone.

Prayer: Father, I trust You alone for my daily needs (Mt 6:11). May I never turn from You in times of prosperity (Prv 30:7-9).

Promise: "Our faith will be credited to us also if we believe in Him Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead." —Rm 4:24

Praise: St. Paul of the Cross founded the Congregation of the Passion, also known as the Passionists, a religious order devoted to spreading the memory of the Passion of Jesus (see 1 Cor 2:2).

GIVE ME A HAND
Jesus "told them a parable on the necessity of praying always and not losing heart." —Luke 18:1

“As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands…and Joshua” won the battle (Ex 17:11-13).

Jesus, nailed upon the cross, battled with the kingdom of darkness for our souls. His hands grew weary as He stretched them out in prayer for us. Though He had no one to hold up His weary arms, the nails held up His hands so He could keep them stretched out in prayer and win the battle.

Perhaps you are alone in your faith and have no Aaron and Hur to support your hands and spirit as you pray. Your cross is heavy, your hands are growing tired, and it’s hard to keep them upraised in confident prayer. So if you “have been crucified with Christ” (Gal 2:19), it could be that the nails holding you to your cross are your “Aaron” and “Hur,” keeping your hands upheld and stretched out in persistent prayer.

Perhaps if circumstances were more favorable in your life, you might be tempted to relax and stop praying. But your cross, the nails, and the suffering keep your hands outstretched in prayer and lead you to victory in your spiritual battle. “So strengthen your drooping hands” (Heb 12:12). Pray persistently, as Jesus directs (see Lk 18:1). “Wear Him out” with your prayers (see Is 62:6-7).

Prayer: Lord, when I grow tired for You, may I never grow tired of You.

Promise: "My help is from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth." —Ps 121:2

Praise: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever" (Ps 136:1).

"WE ARE ONE IN THE SPIRIT" (see Eph 4:4)
"I have no one with me but Luke." —2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke is the great teacher on the Holy Spirit. His is the Gospel of the Holy Spirit, and his Acts of the Apostles is the account of the Holy Spirit creating and developing the Church. Because Luke is filled with the Spirit, he emphasizes God’s call to unity and community, for the Spirit is the Source of our unity (Eph 4:3; 1 Cor 12:13). Luke recounted that Jesus sent out His disciples two by two (Lk 10:1). Luke himself was St. Paul’s partner on some of his missions (see 2 Tm 4:11). Luke also noted that Jesus wanted His disciples to make people’s homes their base for evangelization (Lk 10:7; Acts 16:15). Moreover, Luke emphasized that the Holy Spirit of Pentecost calls us to devote ourselves to the communal life (Acts 2:42).

In our lonely world of isolation, with the Church often divided rather than united, when marriages and families keep breaking up, when Christian community is seen more as a cult than a calling — we need more than ever Luke’s emphasis on the Holy Spirit of unity. Read Luke; live Luke. Be “of one heart and one mind” in the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:32).

Prayer: Father, unite me much more deeply with several of my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Promise: "The harvest is rich but the workers are few; therefore ask the Harvest-Master to send workers to His harvest." —Lk 10:2

Praise: Because of St. Luke, the world knows about the Annunciation and the Nativity, resulting in fervent worship of Jesus throughout the centuries.

HOW SATAN USES FEAR AGAINST US - One Bread, One Body, 10/17/2025

HOW SATAN USES FEAR AGAINST US
"I say to you who are My friends: Do not be afraid." —Luke 12:4

God’s grace continues to be lavishly poured out on us to free us to love Him with all our hearts. In that love, we have the power to transform the world. However, Satan tries to block our reception of God’s grace and love. He does this by tempting us to sin, and he manipulates us into sinning in many ways, especially through fear. Therefore, the Lord commands 365 times in the Bible: “Do not be afraid” (see Lk 12:4).

We can refuse to be manipulated through fear by:

  • fearing God instead of anything else (see Lk 12:5; Sir 34:14),
  • realizing our worth (Lk 12:7). To give in to fear is beneath our dignity as God’s sons and daughters,
  • faith (see Mk 5:36), and
  • complete love for everyone, even our enemies (1 Jn 4:18).

God’s grace is always sufficient for everything (2 Cor 12:9), but we must accept it. Sin is the rejection of God’s grace, and fear is one of Satan’s most effective ways of setting us up to sin. Therefore, accept God’s grace to never give in to fear, for if you fear, you will probably give in to sin and reject further graces.

Prayer: Father, stir into flame the Spirit of faith in my life (see 2 Tm 1:6-7).

Promise: "Blest are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered over. Blest is the man to whom the Lord imputes no guilt." —Rm 4:7-8

Praise: St. Ignatius' love for God was so great that he courageously faced martyrdom in the Roman Colosseum. He was ardently devoted to the divinity and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

"GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES" (see Mt 28:19)
"All men are now undeservedly justified by the gift of God, through the redemption wrought in Christ Jesus." —Romans 3:24

Today I attended Mass at a parish which was having an all-school Mass. There were several hundred students, in grades K-8, present at the Mass. In his homily, the priest asked the students if they knew the mission of the Catholic Church. A student in the sixth grade raised his hand. Father called on him and the boy said: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Father, looking a bit stunned, smiled broadly and told the congregation that the boy’s answer was one of the best he had ever heard. Whether he realized it or not, the boy was quoting Matthew 28:19.

A disciple of Jesus Christ:

  • is one who imitates Jesus in His character and in His ministry,
  • accepts and lives the discipline of the Lord (Heb 12:5ff),
  • professes Jesus as Lord and God (see Jn 20:28),
  • dies to self and follows in the footsteps of Jesus (Lk 9:23),
  • lives a lifestyle of holiness, prayer, worship, study, and service,
  • receives the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22) and follows the Spirit’s lead (Gal 5:25), and
  • makes disciples who disciple others.

“Once you know all these things, blest will you be if you put them into practice” (Jn 13:17).

Prayer: Jesus, I will be Your disciple (see Lk 9:57). Teach me Your ways (see Ps 25:4-5).

Promise: "But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered." —Ps 130:4

Praise: Bill smoked for decades. Jesus brought to his mind that his body was "a temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Cor 6:19). With that revelation came the grace to quit smoking permanently.

RELENTLESS REPENTANCE - One Bread, One Body, 10/15/2025

RELENTLESS REPENTANCE
"Do you not know that God's kindness is an invitation to you to repent?" —Romans 2:4

Jesus told the religious leaders of His time that they were “neglecting justice and the love of God” (Lk 11:42). Because of their sinful pride, they were spiritually dead. They were “like hidden tombs over which men walk unawares” (Lk 11:44). Paul wrote to the Christians of Rome that they had “hard and impenitent” hearts and were “storing up retribution for the day of wrath” (Rm 2:5).

Many religious people often have repented of their sins. Yet, this is only a beginning. We need to repent to a much greater depth. However, because we have already repented, we think we have finished repenting. Instead of our initial repentance being a catalyst leading to greater repentance, it becomes in effect a vaccination. We use a little repentance to inoculate ourselves so that we never progress to deep repentance.

To keep our initial repentance from being used against us, we should:

  • go to Confession at least monthly,
  • ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus to reveal the thoughts and reflections of our hearts (Heb 4:12),
  • silently look at a crucifix for at least one minute a day,
  • use the Bible to examine our consciences daily, and
  • ask the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin (Jn 16:8).

Prayer: Father, immerse me in repentance (Lk 3:3).

TRUE LOVE
"They engaged in the mutual degradation of their bodies." —Romans 1:24

If we engage in idolatry, that is, giving anything priority over God, the Lord will deliver us up in our “lusts to unclean practices” (Rm 1:24) and “disgraceful passions” (Rm 1:26). Women will exchange “natural intercourse for unnatural” (Rm 1:26), and men will give up “natural intercourse with women” and burn “with lust for one another” (Rm 1:27). They will do “shameful things with men, and thus” receive “in their own persons the penalty for their perversity” (Rm 1:27).

The Catholic Church has applied these verses from Romans in the following statement: “Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’ They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2357). This is the way the above verses have been understood for almost two thousand years.

When we know the truth that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered and gravely sinful, we have the basis for truly loving those experiencing same-sex attraction. We can bring them hope and healing in Jesus. If they have sinned, we can encourage them to embrace repentance and chastity. Any understanding of homosexuality not based on truth is harmful to those who experience same-sex attraction. Love in truth (see 1 Jn 3:18).

Prayer: Father, may I love people enough to tell the truth.

Promise: "If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." —Lk 11:41

Praise: Pope St. Callistus I was a humble slave. Jesus exalted him (Mt 23:12) and placed him in the office of Pope. As Pope, Callistus exalted Jesus and vigorously defended His divinity.

LIVING TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
"Through Him we have been favored with apostleship, that we may spread His name." —Romans 1:5

St. Paul, “set apart to proclaim the gospel of God” (Rm 1:1), wrote to the Romans to prepare them to be a home-base for future evangelism in Spain (Rm 15:24, 28). Paul was always thinking of reaching more people for Christ. He would use a courtroom as a forum for preaching the Gospel (Acts 26:1ff). He even stopped to convert the jailer after an earthquake (Acts 16:28ff). Paul repeatedly risked his life to preach the Gospel (2 Cor 11:23). He was single-hearted; evangelism was the only thing on his mind. He would pay any price to win to Christ as many as possible (1 Cor 9:19).

We have seven weeks remaining in the Church year. In the last forty-five weeks, how many people have we tried to lead to the Lord? The fields are ripe for a great harvest (Jn 4:35), but the workers are still few (Mt 9:37). If we’re not evangelizing, are we evangelized? Let’s repent of not sharing the Gospel and make the rest of this year the greatest evangelistic drive of our lives.

Prayer: Father, give me a new Pentecost that leads to a new evangelization.

Promise: "She came from the farthest corner of the world to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, but you have a greater than Solomon here." —Lk 11:31

Praise: George, a professional athlete, does not hide his faith in Jesus Christ and has been a fruitful public witness for his faith.

"DO YOU WANT TO BE HEALED?" (Jn 5:6)
"Go and show yourselves to the priests." —Luke 17:14

In today’s first reading and the Gospel passage, the steps involved in the healings of leprosy were ordinary rather than spectacular (2 Kgs 5:14; Lk 17:14). Humble obedience was required of the lepers, who were not healed until they obeyed. These healings are similar to the seemingly ordinary healing power of the Sacraments (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1420-1421). We must partake of the sacraments to experience their healing effects. For example, the Sacrament of Reconciliation doesn’t take effect until we go and show ourselves to the priest in the Confessional (see Lk 17:14). After doing this, we are forgiven and healed.

It may seem like the healing in a sacrament is a somewhat impersonal transaction. Actually, the Sacraments are deeply personal. In Holy Communion, the flesh of the Lord Jesus dwells within our flesh (Jn 6:56; 17:23). In Confession, the priest, even though he may seem detached, is sitting in the person of Christ (Catechism, 1461, 1465). Through him, Jesus forgives your sin very personally. The other Sacraments are also administered through the personal touch of the Lord.

Naaman wanted a personal, spectacular healing (2 Kgs 5:11ff). But he got the results he wanted through ordinary obedience (2 Kgs 5:14). Through His Church, Jesus has poured out incredible healing power. “Do you want to be healed” badly enough to receive it through the Sacraments Jesus established in His Church? (Jn 5:6)

Prayer: Father, may I seek healing on Your terms.

Promise: "If we have died with Him we shall also live with Him; if we hold out to the end we shall also reign with Him." —2 Tm 2:11-12

Praise: Praise You, healing Jesus, risen in splendor. Alleluia!

WORD IN, WORD OUT
"Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." —Luke 11:28

God speaks and the Word that proceeds from His mouth accomplishes things: creation, miracles, conversions, and much more. God’s Word is alive and pierces hearts (Heb 4:12). God’s Word accomplishes its purposes (see Is 55:11).

Our words also accomplish things. Our words come from the recesses of our hearts and have power to work good or evil. They build people up or tear them apart. With our words, we can sow justice, peace, love, generosity, compassion, forgiveness, and encouragement. Alternatively, with our words we can sow bad fruit such as bitterness, fury, condemnation, and unforgiveness. “A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil. Each man speaks from his heart’s abundance” (Lk 6:45).

Since our words come from our heart, we must allow the Lord to purify our heart to bear the good fruit He expects (see Jn 15:8, 16). The Word of God is the perfect heart-cleansing agent (see Jn 15:3). Our challenge, then, is to regularly fill our heart with the Word of God and thereby give our heart a daily bath in God’s Word (Eph 5:26). Our native language will then become “Scripture” and our words will produce much good fruit. Thus we will be able to “hear the word of God and keep it” (Lk 11:28).

Prayer: Father, fill me with an ever-deepening desire to make Your Word my home (Jn 8:31). Teach me "what to say and how to speak" (Jn 12:49).

Promise: Be glad in the Lord, you just, and give thanks to His holy name." —Ps 97:12

Praise: Pope St. John XXIII is credited with saving the lives of many Jews while serving as archbishop in Greece during World War II.
