WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES OF SALVATION?
"Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?" —Luke 13:23
The person who asked this question of Jesus was probably asking: “What are my chances of being saved?” Moreover, after hearing Jesus’ response, the questioner was probably thinking that his chances were not that good if only a few people would be saved.
Jesus did not give the impression that it was easy to be saved. Jesus said: “Try to come in through the narrow door” (Lk 13:24). He also said that many will seek “to enter and be unable” (Lk 13:24). Jesus also implied that being in the Church, praying, and being taught the faith do not guarantee us entry into His kingdom (Lk 13:26-27). Also, Jesus will say to some: “Away from Me, you evildoers!” (Lk 13:27) This will come as a surprise, for “some who are first will be last” (Lk 13:30).
On the other hand, “some who are last will be first” (Lk 13:30). “Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets” will be “safe in the kingdom of God” (Lk 13:28). “People will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and will take their place at the feast in the kingdom of God” (Lk 13:29). Also, “we know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love” Him and are called according to His decree (Rm 8:28). Finally, Jesus wants all people to be saved (1 Tm 2:4), and He died on the cross to save all. Consequently, we have reason to be confident of our salvation, but not presumptuous. Repent, believe Jesus, and give your life to Him.
Prayer: Father, may I make any sacrifices necessary to lead as many people as possible to You (see 1 Cor 9:19).
Promise: "The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us." —Rm 8:26
