THE SPIRIT OF SUBMISSION

"Slaves, obey your human masters with the reverence, the awe, and the sincerity you owe to Christ." -Ephesians 6:5

Everyone should submit to each other (Eph 5:21). Wives should submit to husbands (Eph 5:22), children to parents (Eph 6:1), and employees to employers (Eph 6:5). Those in authority should submit to the Lord (see Eph 6:4, 9). The Lord wants to create an entire culture of submission.
If we accept God's call to be submissive in circumstance after circumstance, we will open ourselves to being filled with the Spirit. The beginning of this teaching on submission in Ephesians is verse 5:21. Although this verse looks like a sentence in some translations, it is a participial phrase in the original. Verse 21 is subordinated to the main verb in the sentence, which is "be filled" (with the Holy Spirit) in 5:18. In the original Greek, the Lord is saying that we must live lives of submission if we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Mary received the Holy Spirit after calling herself God's handmaid (Lk 1:38). Those who received the Spirit at the first Christian Pentecost humbled themselves in asking: "What are we to do?" (Acts 2:37) Twelve Ephesian men received the Spirit after they humbly admitted that they had never heard of the Spirit (Acts 19:2). Cornelius and his household received the Spirit after Cornelius prostrated himself in submission to Peter (Acts 10:25). The Spirit descended on Jesus when He submitted Himself to John's baptism (Mt 3:14-15). Life in submission leads to life in the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I love You by submitting myself to those whom You have given authority over me.

Promise: "Try to come in through the narrow door." -Lk 13:24

Praise: After receiving prayers for healing, Virginia's cancerous tumor disappeared.

CRUSHED AND BROKEN

"To what shall I compare the reign of God? It is like yeast which a woman took to knead into three measures of flour until the whole mass of dough began to rise." -Luke 13:20-21

How does God's kingdom come, and how is His will done? Jesus tells us in today's Gospel that the wheat flour is permeated by the crushed and broken yeast spread throughout the whole batch. That's how His kingdom comes. Our faith must permeate the whole batch of our lives, not just compartments of our life here and there. Our Christianity must be alive and continuously operating at home, at work, in the grocery store, and in the most thorny, complicated areas of life. The Lord sends us daily opportunities to be salt, light, and yeast in the world (see Mt 5:13-16).
The wheat and grapes used to make the bread and wine for the Eucharist are also crushed and broken (see Jn 12:24). In their brokenness, they become the bread and wine, which, when consecrated, become the Body, Blood, soul, and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ (see 1 Cor 11:23ff). Likewise, the most crushing and perplexing of crosses form us into faithful Christians.
Let Jesus take control of your life. Then let other people in, to see what God can do when you allow Him to take those crushing blows of life and turn them to good (Rm 8:28). Jesus "kneads" us because he "needs" us to be His living witnesses in the world now.

Prayer: Father, strengthen me into surrendering everything to You.

Promise: "Christ loved the Church. He gave Himself up for her to make her holy." -Eph 5:25-26

Praise: Teresa and her husband joyfully surrender to the authority of the Church in her teachings on artificial birth control.

NO PROBLEM OR KNOW PROBLEM - One Bread, One Body, 10/29/2012

NO PROBLEM OR KNOW PROBLEM

"There was a woman there who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit which drained her strength." -Luke 13:11

The woman in today's Gospel reading who had been possessed, drained, and stooped for eighteen years may represent the American Church. In the Catholic community, we have been drained of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, drained of almost a generation of young people, and drained of faith through compromise with our secularized and materialistic culture.
As is customary in situations of bondage, we have denied the reality of the problem and thereby prolonged it. Instead of admitting there's something seriously wrong, we use euphemisms, such as "merger," "restructuring," and "transitions" in place of "close-down," "salvaging," and "deterioration."
Also, as with the synagogue of Jesus' day, there is something inside us that resents being set free (Lk 13:14). We know that freedom implies giving up our sinful ways, and so we clutch sin and hold on for dear death. We are in an adulterous relationship with the world.
"Make no mistake about this: no fornicator, no unclean or lustful person - in effect an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with worthless arguments" (Eph 5:5-6). We must admit we have a problem, recognize disobedience as the way by which the devil has entered, and repent of our sins. Jesus wants to release us from our shackles, if we only let Him (Lk 13:16).

Prayer: Father, I repent of refusing to admit my need to repent. Forgive me for ruining my life and Your Church.

Promise: "As for lewd conduct or promiscuousness or lust of any sort, let them not even be mentioned among you; your holiness forbids this. Nor should there be any obscene, silly, or suggestive talk; all that is out of place. Instead, give thanks." -Eph 5:3-4

Praise: Ten years ago, Roger decided to live without a car. He simplified his lifestyle and has found great happiness in Jesus.

PM eNewsletter 30th Sunday in ordinary time

October 29th 30th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, it is good for us to pray for all those who have
died and gone before us.

Give us the inspiration to pray especially for those in
purgatory who have no one to pray for them.

Let us be aware that those in purgatory depend on
us to get them into the glory of heaven through our
prayers, masses, and the charitable acts that we do
for there release.

Jesus, continue to grace us to understand that our
brothers and sisters who have gone before us have
changed into eternal beings that are now in the
communion of saints forever and ever.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday PRAY TO SEE TO PRAY TO SEE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=10/28/2012

"I want to see." -Mark 10:51

The apostles twice saw Jesus multiply the loaves and the fish, but they did not see
the significance of these miracles. In His frustration, Jesus exclaimed to them: "Do
you still not see or comprehend? Are your minds completely blinded? Have you eyes but
no sight?" (Mk 8:17-18) The apostles were spiritually blind not only to the
significance of Jesus' miracles, but also to the significance of Jesus Himself. They
were blind to the necessity of the cross (see Mk 8:31-33).

Jesus tried to begin to correct the apostles' vision by means of His Transfiguration
before three apostles (see Mk 9:2ff). This did not succeed, as the apostles continued
to be blinded to the Lord's revelations of the cross (see Mk 9:31-32). Next, the Lord
healed the blind Bartimaeus physically. He hoped that the apostles might learn from
Bartimaeus to pray: "Rabboni, I want to see" (see Mk 10:51). However, that didn't
work either. Even Jesus' crucifixion, death, and resurrection didn't open the
apostles' eyes. Finally, two disciples' eyes were opened in the breaking of the bread
on the afternoon of Jesus' resurrection (Lk 24:31). Then, with the coming of the Holy
Spirit at Pentecost, many eyes were opened.

Jesus' disciples finally saw the significance of Jesus' Transfiguration and the
healing of blind Bartimaeus. The disciples saw the need to pray: "I want to see"
(Mk 10:51), and the Church was born.

Prayer: Father, may I see my blindness so that I can pray to see.

Promise: "Behold, I will bring them back from the land of the north; I will gather
them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst, the
mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng." -Jer 31:8

Praise: Praise Jesus, our risen Lord and Love! He has taken "His seat at the right
hand of the Majesty in heaven, as far superior to the angels as the name He has
inherited is superior to theirs" (Heb 1:3-4). Alleluia!

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

"URGENTLY NECESSARY"

... In a world where violence constantly leaves behind its grim trail of death and
destruction, to serve justice and peace is urgently necessary for building a fraternal
society, for building fellowship!

"SERVANTS OF PEACE"

... I pray ... that the Lord will grant to this region of the Middle East servants of
peace and reconciliation, so that all people can live in peace and with dignity.

"BE PEACEMAKERS"

This is an essential testimony which Christians must render here, in cooperation with all
people of good will. I appeal to all of you to be peacemakers, wherever you find yourselves.

CHILDREN NO MORE

"Be children no longer." -Ephesians 4:14

We Christians are called to be child-like, not childish (1 Cor 14:20). Being childish means being "tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine that originates in human trickery and skill in proposing error" (Eph 4:14). It means being manipulated and enslaved.
The way to freedom from childishness is to profess the truth in love (Eph 4:15). The truth will set us free (Jn 8:32) and have us "grow to the full maturity of Christ the Head" (Eph 4:15).
We grow up and grow out of childishness by obeying apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastor-teachers who will equip us for the work of service to build up the body of Christ (Eph 4:11-12). The truth that sets us free from childishness is not just general spiritual information; it is the truth that prepares us for full-time service to the body of Christ. This is the call of all the baptized.
Furthermore, the truth that frees and equips us for service is based on the Bible. "All Scripture is inspired of God and is useful for teaching - for reproof, correction, and training in holiness so that the man of God may be fully competent and equipped for every good work" (2 Tm 3:16-17).
Therefore, study and know God's word in the Scriptures to prepare for God's service or else live the enslaved, confused life of a child. Grow up or be manipulated. It's the Bible and God's service, or confusion and darkness. "Let us, then, be children no longer" (Eph 4:14).

Prayer: Father, may I give You reason to rejoice in my growth. May I be "fully mature and lacking in nothing" (Jas 1:4).

Promise: "Through [Jesus] the whole body grows, and with the proper functioning of the members joined firmly together by each supporting ligament, builds itself up in love." -Eph 4:16

Praise: Jesus delivered Robert from a life of dealing and abusing drugs.

DISMEMBERING

"There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there is but one hope given all of you by your call. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all." -Ephesians 4:4-6

The division of the Christian Church into thousands of denominations is directly opposed to God's will. Jesus prays that we would all be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Yet we have resigned ourselves to this scandal of division for hundreds of years. We have become accustomed to Christians' willful disobedience to God. We feel helpless to do anything about our divisions. At best, we pray sporadically that the Lord may miraculously intervene and restore unity to His Church.
We must do more than pray. Unity has its origin in the Spirit but is preserved by our efforts (Eph 4:3). We must "make every effort" (Eph 4:3) "to live a life worthy of the calling" (Eph 4:1) we have received, "with perfect humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another lovingly" (Eph 4:2). Are we making "every effort" if we don't even talk or pray with our "separated brethren"? Are we as concerned about this problem as if our fingers, hands, or arms were cut off from our bodies? Will we tolerate the dismembering of Christ's body or will we do something?
The Lord is doing something about the condition of His Body. Seek His will and obey Him.

Prayer: Father, I'm sorry for my part in breaking up Your family by sin and apathy. Forgive me.

Promise: "He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, a reward from God his Savior. Such is the race that seeks for Him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob." -Ps 24:5-6

Praise: Louise led her kidnapper to give his life to Jesus. He felt Jesus take away the hatred from his life.

MELT DOWN

"I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!" -Luke 12:49

Jesus wants to set the world on fire (Lk 12:49). This fire is that of a blast furnace - a fire so hot it will separate impurities from metal (see 1 Pt 1:7). Jesus wants to set our families on fire. He wants to blast our families with such a fire that it will melt them down and divide anything in our families put together contrary to God's will (see Lk 12:51ff).
Will you pray for holy fire to consume your family? "Our God is a consuming Fire" (Heb 12:29). Therefore, it's a fearful but necessary thing to fall into His hands (see Heb 10:31). Pray for your family to be "fire-tried" (1 Pt 1:7) and fire-purified (see Mal 3:2-3). When your prayer is answered, you may initially be alarmed as you see the sin and unforgiveness in your family rise quickly to the surface. Nevertheless, pray on and pray through. Pray by faith, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7). The situation may have to look worse before it really gets better. Keep praying for God's fire and our repentance to finally result in family unity with each other and with God forever. "Let the fire fall."

Prayer: Father, may I not be so concerned about burnout that I never catch fire.

Promise: "That is why I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray that He will bestow on you gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory." -Eph 3:14-16

Praise: Richard burned his pornographic magazines, went to Confession, gave his life to Jesus, and returned to the Church.

OUR JOB AND OUR JOY - One Bread, One Body, 10/24/2012

Wednesday, October 24, 2012, St. Anthony Mary Claret

Ephesians 3:2-12, Isaiah 12:2-6, Luke 12:39-48
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102412.cfm

OUR JOB AND OUR JOY

"Who in your opinion is that faithful, farsighted steward whom the Master will set over His servants to dispense their ration of grain in season?" -Luke 12:42

When Jesus comes back today or later, what will you be doing? Will you be quarreling with the other servants of Jesus (Lk 12:45) or dispensing the "ration of grain in season"? (Lk 12:42) Will you be feeding His sheep (Jn 21:17) with God's Word? (Mt 4:4) Will you be sharing your faith in Jesus?
The Lord has given us so much. Many of us are privileged to receive daily in Holy Communion the Gift of gifts, Jesus Christ, God Himself. The Lord has made us new creations by His death and resurrection. The Holy Trinity even lives within us. "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man" (1 Cor 2:9) what God has already done for us.
"When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted" (Lk 12:48). The Lord, out of love for a lost world, rightly expects us to share our faith at every opportunity (see 1 Pt 3:15). On Judgment Day, He will hold us accountable for doing this. When He returns, He will expect to see us dispensing the grain, feeding the sheep, sharing our faith.
Most of you have heard this message before. This is not the first time you have read today's Gospel reading. However, you may not have obeyed it. Repent, ask for the Holy Spirit, and give people the opportunity to hear about, know, and love Jesus.

Prayer: Father, I will not deceive myself by only hearing Your word but not doing it (Jas 1:22).

Promise: "Through the Church, God's manifold wisdom is made known to the principalities and powers of heaven, in accord with His age-old purpose, carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord." -Eph 3:10-11

Praise: Living a life of love for Christ, St. Anthony wrote and published almost two-hundred spiritual books or pamphlets throughout the years of his apostolate.

A.D. MEANS AFTER DEATH - One Bread, One Body, 10/23/2012

Tuesday, October 23, 2012, St. John of Capistrano

Ephesians 2:12-22, Psalm 85:9-14, Luke 12:35-38
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102312.cfm

A.D. MEANS AFTER DEATH

"This means that you are strangers and aliens no longer." -Ephesians 2:19

Before we were baptized into Jesus Christ (see Rm 6:3), we "were strangers to the covenant and its promise" (Eph 2:12). We "were without hope and without God in the world" (Eph 2:12). We were far from God (Eph 2:13, 17). Without Christ, a barrier stood between ourselves and God (see Mt 27:51) and between Gentiles and Jews (Eph 2:14).
Jesus changed all this through His cross (Eph 2:16). "This means that you are strangers and aliens no longer. No, you are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God. You form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the Capstone" (Eph 2:19-20). "Once you were no people, but now you are God's people; once there was no mercy for you, but now you have found mercy" (1 Pt 2:10).
Before we lived in and for Christ, we were dead (Eph 2:1). After becoming new creations in Christ, we began to live. Therefore, we:
* owe the Lord constant thanks and praise forever,
* must love people enough to tell them the good news of Jesus, and
* should rejoice in the Lord always (Phil 4:4).

We are in A.D., not B.C. Praise; witness; rejoice!

Prayer: Father, may my every breath be a "thank-you" to You.

Promise: "It will go well with those servants whom the Master finds wide-awake on His return." -Lk 12:37

Praise: St. John was governor of his city. He was captured and imprisoned during a battle. While in prison, he gave his life to Jesus, and when released, he went into the seminary and eventually became a priest.

ARE YOU SAVED? - One Bread, One Body, 10/22/2012

Monday, October 22, 2012

Ephesians 2:1-10, Psalm 100:1-5, Luke 12:13-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102212.cfm

ARE YOU SAVED?

"By grace you have been saved." -Ephesians 2:5, RSV-CE

We were saved (see Ti 3:5) when we were baptized. As we live out our baptism by faith, we are being saved (see 1 Cor 15:2). We will finally be saved if we persevere in living out our faith in Jesus (see Rm 10:9). The Bible speaks of being saved in past, present, and future tenses.
We have been, are, and will be saved from death, sin, Satan, hell, damnation, slavery, self-hatred, self-destruction, etc. We are saved from giving "allegiance to the present age and to the prince of the air," being "among the rebellious" (Eph 2:2), living "at the level of the flesh," and deserving "God's wrath like the rest" (Eph 2:3).
We are saved in Christ for eternal life with Him, resurrection from the dead, "a place in the heavens" (Eph 2:6), "the life of good deeds" (Eph 2:10), etc.
We are saved by His grace richly expressed in mercy and love (Eph 2:4-5). "I repeat, it is owing to His favor that salvation is yours through faith. This is not your own doing, it is God's gift; neither is it a reward for anything you have accomplished" (Eph 2:8-9). We are saved by faith in the person of Jesus (Acts 16:31) and in His death and resurrection.
Are you saved and being saved? Will you be saved?

Prayer: "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me." Thank You, Jesus, Savior and Lord. I decide to live my life totally for You.

Promise: "Avoid greed in all its forms. A man may be wealthy, but his possessions do not guarantee him life." -Lk 12:15

Praise: Bill returned to weekly Mass after an absence of a decade because some members of the parish evangelization team cared enough to knock on his door and invite him to join them.

PM eNewsletter 29th Sunday in ordinary time

October 21st 29th Sunday in ordinary time.

Oh! Christ, always and everywhere, remind us through the
Holy Spirit to come and adore Your living presense in the
tabernacle.

Let us sit or kneel, and just adore, and thank You for Your
love for all of us.

Keep us from getting so busy in our daily life that we
forget that You, and You alone, are the way, the truth, and
the life.

Ask Your loving mother to come and adore with us, so
that we will stay focused on Your true presense.

Inspire us through this adoration to realize that all things
work to good for those who love You.

Give us the faith to always trust You.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SUFFERING SERVANTS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=10/21/2012

"Through His suffering, My Servant shall justify many." -Isaiah 53:11

Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would not only be the Christ (the Anointed One)
and Emmanuel (God with us), but also God's "Servant." The Servant-Messiah would
transform the world primarily through suffering. This Suffering Servant would be
crushed in infirmity, burdened with all our guilt, afflicted, and put to death
"as an Offering for sin" (see Is 53:10-11). Jesus was the Fulfillment of Isaiah's
prophecy. He came not "to be served but to serve - to give His life in ransom for
the many" (Mk 10:45).

Jesus calls us to follow Him and "serve the needs of all" (Mk 10:44). At first,
we're open to this, but we later want to change our minds as we realize that our
service will also be primarily through suffering. We are tempted to contrive a
Christianity which minimizes suffering. Christianity does remove much suffering by
healing the sick and setting people free from the evil one. However, authentic
Christianity frees us from some sufferings to free us for other sufferings:
rejection, self-sacrifice, and persecution. We must decide whether or not to serve,
suffer, and be a Christian. Be a suffering servant; be a Christian.

Prayer: Father, may I rejoice in the measure I serve and suffer (see 1 Pt 4:13).

Promise: "Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and
favor and to find help in time of need." -Heb 4:16

Praise: "Exult, you just, in the Lord; praise from the upright is fitting" (Ps 33:1). Alleluia!

teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

WITNESS TO GOD'S PRESENCE

May Lebanon continue to be a place where men and women can live in harmony and peace
with each other, in order to give the world not only a witness to the presence of God ...
but also a witness to the communion between people, ... whatever their political, social
or religious standpoint.

PRAYER FOR LEBANON

I pray to God for Lebanon, that she may live in peace and courageously resist all that
could destroy or undermine that peace. I hope that Lebanon will continue to permit the
plurality of religious traditions and not listen to those who wish to prevent it.

"CHOOSE BROTHERHOOD"

I hope that Lebanon will fortify the communion among all her inhabitants, whatever their
community or religion, that she will resolutely reject all that could lead to disunity,
and with determination choose brotherhood.

SUFFERING SERVANTS - One Bread, One Body, 10/21/2012

Sunday, October 21, 2012, 29th Sunday Ordinary Time

Isaiah 53:10-11, Hebrews 4:14-16, Psalm 33:4-5, 18-20, 22, Mark 10:35-45

SUFFERING SERVANTS

"Through His suffering, My Servant shall justify many." -Isaiah 53:11

Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would not only be the Christ (the Anointed One) and Emmanuel (God with us), but also God's "Servant." The Servant-Messiah would transform the world primarily through suffering. This Suffering Servant would be crushed in infirmity, burdened with all our guilt, afflicted, and put to death "as an Offering for sin" (see Is 53:10-11). Jesus was the Fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy. He came not "to be served but to serve - to give His life in ransom for the many" (Mk 10:45).
Jesus calls us to follow Him and "serve the needs of all" (Mk 10:44). At first, we're open to this, but we later want to change our minds as we realize that our service will also be primarily through suffering. We are tempted to contrive a Christianity which minimizes suffering. Christianity does remove much suffering by healing the sick and setting people free from the evil one. However, authentic Christianity frees us from some sufferings to free us for other sufferings: rejection, self-sacrifice, and persecution. We must decide whether or not to serve, suffer, and be a Christian. Be a suffering servant; be a Christian.

Prayer: Father, may I rejoice in the measure I serve and suffer (see 1 Pt 4:13).

Promise: "Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to find help in time of need." -Heb 4:16

Praise: "Exult, you just, in the Lord; praise from the upright is fitting" (Ps 33:1). Alleluia!

HE'S STILL PRAYING FOR YOU - One Bread, One Body, 10/20/2012

Saturday, October 20, 2012, St. Paul of the Cross

Ephesians 1:15-23, Psalm 8:2-7, Luke 12:8-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102012.cfm

HE'S STILL PRAYING FOR YOU

"I have never stopped thanking God for you and recommending you in my prayers." -Ephesians 1:16

During his life, Father Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body (OBOB), often prayed for you readers. It has been a decade now since his death, but I can still hear the voice of Father Al praying for his beloved OBOB readers.
Father Al always gave thanks for your faith and love (Eph 1:15). He wanted you to come to know Jesus clearly (Eph 1:17); accordingly, he wrote these teachings for twenty years so you could have that opportunity. He prayed that all would know their call (Eph 1:18), live fully their God-given vocation, and know the great hope that belongs to this call.
Father especially preached about the immeasurable scope of the power of God (Eph 1:19) in us through the "dynamite" of the Holy Spirit working through us (see Acts 1:8). He constantly exhorted all who read OBOB to center our lives on the Church, the Eucharist, and the Bible, in particular the daily eucharistic readings (Eph 1:22-23). He spent his last decades urging all to try to attend Mass daily.
Father often expressed the desire that Presentation Ministries would still be ministering in power when Jesus returns at His Second Coming. May we all remain faithful to the Church, fix our eyes on Jesus (Heb 3:1), and walk in the surpassing greatness of the power of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Al Lauer, continue to pray for us.

Prayer: "May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, grant you a spirit of wisdom and insight to know Him clearly. May He enlighten your innermost vision that you may know the great hope to which He has called you" (Eph 1:17-18).

Promise: "The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said." -Lk 12:12

Praise: St. Paul lived the way of the cross of Jesus Christ. He advised: "Conceal yourselves in Jesus crucified, and hope for nothing except that all men be thoroughly converted to His will."

PEOPLE OF PRAISE - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2012

Friday, October 19, 2012, St. John de Brebeuf,, St. Isaac Jogues & Companions

Ephesians 1:11-14, Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13, Luke 12:1-7
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101912.cfm

PEOPLE OF PRAISE

"...a people God has made His own, to praise His glory." -Ephesians 1:14

The world never mentions that people are praising God. By this silence, some might conclude that people don't praise God. However, the reality is that there's a non-stop symphony of praise taking place on earth. Consecrated religious and devout lay people across the globe praise God at least twice daily in the Liturgy of the Hours. Right now, many are praying the Divine Praises in Benediction, Eucharistic Adoration, or private prayer. Many others are praising God in song or with the charismatic gift of tongues. Babies and young children are offering God praise (see Mt 21:16; Ps 8:3). Best of all, Holy Masses are offered non-stop throughout the world in praise of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We are "predestined to praise" the glory of God (Eph 1:12). God has made us "His own, to praise His glory" (Eph 1:14). Our praises are a foretaste of heaven, when we will be caught up in worship of the Triune God, praising Him "without pause" (Rv 4:8).
Since God has made us a people of praise, let us live out our vocation of praise. "It is fitting to praise Him" (Ps 147:1). "Chant His praises" (Ps 33:2). "Sing praise to His name" (Ps 135:3). Praise God in the morning and in the evening (Ps 92:2-3). Praise the Lord all your life (Ps 145:2). "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Alleluia" (Ps 150:6).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, pour out Your love in the hearts of all believers (Rm 5:5). May "the high praises of God be in their throats" (Ps 149:6). "Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim Your praise" (Ps 51:17).

Promise: "Even the hairs of your head are counted! Fear nothing, then. You are worth more than a flock of sparrows." -Lk 12:7

Praise: St. Isaac had several fingers severed by Iroquois tribesmen. He persevered and used his wounded hands to celebrate Mass for them and baptize Indian converts until he was martyred.

THIS IS YOUR LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 10/18/2012

Thursday, October 18, 2012, St. Luke

2 Timothy 4:10-17, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, Luke 10:1-9
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101812.cfm

THIS IS YOUR LIFE

"I have no one with me but Luke." -2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke left his profession as a doctor (Col 4:14) to tag along behind Paul on some of his missionary journeys. He had known that in following Jesus He was not assured of having a roof over his head (Lk 9:58). However, he still probably wasn't prepared for years of hunger, thirst, poverty, homelessness, manual labor, insult, persecution, and slander (1 Cor 4:11-13). He must have looked and felt like a failure on many occasions. However, after having put his hand to the plow, Luke did not look back (Lk 9:62). He persevered.
Luke also wrote down some of the preachings and teachings in the early Church and carefully arranged them in sequence (Lk 1:3). Luke thought that this might be helpful, especially to some of the Gentile Christians. Luke's Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles proved to be more than helpful. The Church discerned that what he wrote and compiled was the divinely inspired Word of God. The Lord used Luke to write a large part of the New Testament. Luke's life is undoubtedly one of the most important lives in human history.
Your obscure and difficult life will also be of eternal significance, if you do God's will.

Prayer: Father, may I live a "life of faith" (Gal 2:20).

Promise: "The harvest is rich but the workers are few; therefore ask the Harvest-Master to send workers to His harvest." -Lk 10:2

Praise: St. Luke aimed to give "reliable instruction" about God (Lk 1:4). His Gospel has led countless souls to Jesus for centuries.

CRUCIFIED OR BURNT FLESH? - One Bread, One Body, 10/17/2012

Wednesday, October 17, 2012, St. Ignatius of Antioch

Galatians 5:18-25, Psalm 1:1-4, 6, Luke 11:42-46
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101712.cfm

CRUCIFIED OR BURNT FLESH?

"In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity." -Galatians 5:22-23

If we live by the Spirit (Gal 5:25), we will be led by the Spirit (Gal 5:18). We will then walk in the Spirit (Gal 5:25), Who will produce in our lives the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23). However, if we stifle (1 Thes 5:19) or sadden the Spirit (Eph 4:30), we will do the works of the flesh (see Gal 5:19-21).
We cannot live for long partly in the flesh and partly in the Spirit, for these two are directly opposed (Gal 5:17). Either the Spirit in our lives is lusting against the selfish desires of our flesh so as to crucify them (Gal 5:24), or the flesh is increasingly stifling the Spirit so that after having begun in the Spirit we will end in the flesh (Gal 3:3). We will have either the fruit "that remains unto life eternal" (see Jn 6:27) or an everlasting hell of burning flesh.
Therefore, constantly decide to crucify the flesh and to live in the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I choose life in the Spirit (see Dt 30:19) because I love You.

Promise: "Happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, but delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on His law day and night." -Ps 1:1-2

Praise: St. Ignatius was able to write several pastoral letters on the way to his martyrdom.

TIGHT AS... - One Bread, One Body, 10/16/2012

Tuesday, October 16, 2012, St. Hedwig, St. Margaret Mary Alocoque

Galatians 5:1-6, Psalm 119:41, 43-45, 47-48, Luke 11:37-41
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101612.cfm

TIGHT AS...

"If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." -Luke 11:41

At Mass this morning, I asked the Holy Spirit to guide me to the Scripture that He desired to use for this teaching. Then I read the daily eucharistic readings from my Bible as they were proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word. I listened to the homily and jotted notes as the Spirit prompted. Then the priest encouraged us to generously give alms, based on Jesus' words in today's Gospel (Lk 11:41). I stopped writing notes and mentally protested to God: "Lord, I can't give alms right now. Money's really tight." The Lord responded immediately: "So is your heart!"
Jesus says: "Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be" (Lk 12:34). If we treasure a healthy bank account balance, our heart will be on our bank account balance. If we treasure the things of God, our hearts won't be tight, but rather open. To all who fear that the Father will not provide, Jesus proclaims: "Do not live in fear, little flock. It has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give alms" (Lk 12:32-33).
In the movie A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge must watch his relatives play a game called "Similes" with their friends. Ebenezer's nephew, who is leading the game, calls out, "Tight as...", to which his wife responds: "Tight as...your Uncle Scrooge's purse strings!" Scrooge repents of a tight heart and gives alms profusely from a cheerful heart (see 2 Cor 9:7). May God give us new, open hearts (Ez 36:26) so we can "go and do the same" (Lk 10:37).

Prayer: Father, loosen my heart to be trusting instead of tight. "Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours."

Promise: "It is in the Spirit that we eagerly await the justification we hope for, and only faith can yield it." -Gal 5:5

Praise: Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart and passionate love for humanity to St. Margaret Mary. She was reviled for this and disbelieved by many, but the love of Jesus sustained her.

RE-BORN FREE - One Bread, One Body, 10/15/2012

Monday, October 15, 2012, St. Teresa of Jesus

Galatians 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1, Psalm 113:1-7, Luke 11:29-32

RE-BORN FREE

"It was for liberty that Christ freed us." -Galatians 5:1

In our secular humanistic culture, many people associate freedom with doing what they want instead of what they ought. They connect freedom with lack of commitment, restrictions, or inhibitions in such mistaken expressions as "free time," "free trade," or "free love."
However, true freedom is not something we concoct but something we inherit. Freedom depends on our birth. In the culture present at the time of St. Paul, slavery was a major component of the economic and social system. It was obvious that people were either "born free" or born enslaved. Paul stated: "We are not children of a slave girl but of a mother who is free" (Gal 4:31).
Because of original sin and our fallen human nature, no one is born free. That is why to be free we must be born again from above through Baptism (Jn 3:3, 5). True freedom is based on living our baptismal promises, being confirmed in our baptismal identity, and overcoming temptations to sin and slavery by drawing on our baptismal graces. Therefore, "make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19).

Prayer: Father, may I use holy water to renew my Baptism deeply and daily.

Promise: "At the preaching of Jonah they reformed, but you have a greater than Jonah here." -Lk 11:32

Praise: St. Teresa loved Jesus deeply. Near the end of her life, she exclaimed, "Oh, my Lord! How true it is that whoever works for You is paid in troubles! And what a precious price to those who love You if we understand its value."
