A HEART-TO-HEART TALK

"I, the Lord, alone probe the mind and test the heart." -Jeremiah 17:10

Throughout the Lenten season, the catechumens, those preparing to be baptized and/or to enter the Catholic Church, are being scrutinized. On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent, usually at Mass, the catechumens will be prayed for by the universal Church, according to the pattern of the ancient prayers called "the scrutinies." In these prayers, we ask the Lord to read (e.g. Acts 1:24), search (Ps 139:23), purify (e.g. Acts 15:9), and strengthen their hearts (e.g. 1 Thes 3:13). This "open-heart operation" is absolutely essential, and only God can perform it (Jer 17:10; Jn 2:25), for the human heart is tortuous, twisted, deceitful, and humanly incomprehensible (Jer 17:9).
Although the scrutinies are primarily for the catechumens, we all need to have our hearts scrutinized and purified by the Lord. Ask Jesus to remove from the inner recesses of your heart (Mk 7:21) all that is not of Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to pour out in your heart His divine love (Rm 5:5). Then, filled with this love, speak from the abundance of your heart (Lk 6:45). Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Prayer: "Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make our hearts like Yours" (see Mt 11:29).

Promise: "If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if one should rise from the dead." -Lk 16:31

Praise: For over a decade, Sarah has faithfully devoted several hours weekly to adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

(To come closer to Jesus as you are alone with Him, consider ordering our book, "Conversion-Conversations". This book contains forty weeks of brief daily prayer conversations that will bring you deeply into His heart.)

PRAYERFULLY VENGEFUL?

"In Your hands is my destiny; rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors." -Psalm 31:16

Jeremiah's enemies were plotting against him and trying to destroy him (Jer 18:18). Jeremiah reacted to this as most humans would. He tried to defend himself and retaliate. Jeremiah prayed for the children of his enemies to starve to death or die by the sword (Jer 18:21). Then Jeremiah prayed for the wives of his enemies to be childless and widowed and for the men to die of pestilence or be killed in war (Jer 18:21). Jeremiah was prayerfully vengeful, and often so are we, although we usually aren't as open about this as Jeremiah was.
"To err is human, to forgive is divine." So Jeremiah and all human beings do not possess the power to forgive. We have no choice but to be unforgiving, although unforgiveness is a poison that will kill and damn us. What we can't help doing will destroy us. Thus we are in an impossible situation. However, Jesus is divine and therefore He has the power to forgive. He will give this power to us. He will save us from damning ourselves because of unforgiveness.
Right now, make the decision to accept Jesus' power and to forgive all who have hurt you in any way. By Jesus' grace, forgive all for all. Do the humanly impossible. Act on a supernatural level. Forgive and pray accordingly.

Prayer: Father, may I repay evil with good (cf Jer 18:20; see also Rm 12:21).

Promise: "Such is the case with the Son of Man Who has come, not to be served by others, but to serve, to give His own life as a Ransom for the many." -Mt 20:28

Praise: Rather than complain, Edward prays for those in government.

THE "EXSULTET"

"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." -Matthew 23:12

God "is stern with the arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness" (1 Pt 5:5; Prv 3:34). God the Father loves us so much that He gave His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and give us the opportunity for a new life (see Jn 3:16). The Lord wants to overwhelm us with His love and blessings (Dt 28:2). However, if we are arrogant, we will not rightly understand or use God's gifts. We will use them to exalt ourselves rather than the Lord. This will be harmful to us. Therefore, the Lord in His love is stern with the arrogant and humbles them for their own good.
The Lord wants to surround and fill us with His love, but does not want to "spoil us rotten" in our arrogance. It's up to us to humble ourselves and let the Lord exalt us in His love. Otherwise, the Lord will do the humbling. Therefore, let us humble ourselves by repenting, forgiving, confessing, apologizing, sacrificing, serving, admitting our mistakes, choosing a simple lifestyle, exposing ourselves to persecution, loving our enemies, obeying those in authority, suffering redemptively, giving up our plans, giving all to the Lord, etc. Let us humble ourselves to the point that we can say: "I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own" (Gal 2:19-20). Then He will exalt us.

Prayer: Father, when I hear the "Exsultet" sung at Easter Vigil this year, may it mean something special to me because I have humbled myself.

Promise: "Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord: though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow." -Is 1:18

Praise: Practicing with and singing in the Easter choir strengthens Belinda's faith.

ASHAMED OF NOTHING BUT JESUS? - One Bread, One Body, 2/25/2013

Monday, February 25, 2013

Daniel 9:4-10, Psalm 79:8-9, 11, 13, Luke 6:36-38
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022513.cfm

ASHAMED OF NOTHING BUT JESUS?

"We are shamefaced." -Daniel 9:7

I recently met a woman who had returned to the U.S.A. after serving twenty years as a foreign missionary. She was utterly shocked by the changes in American culture during her absence. Topics never mentioned in decent conversation were now flaunted publicly from billboards, movies, and prime-time TV. Political candidates who would never have been considered worthy of nomination when she left were now routinely being elected. She was dumbfounded at the absence of the sense of sin and shame.
Daniel was a holy and righteous Jew, blamelessly observing the ordinances of the Lord (Dn 1:8; 6:11). Yet his Jewish people had been exiled "because of their treachery" toward God (Dn 9:7). Daniel humbly recognized his part, however small, in the sins of his nation, and was ashamed (Dn 9:7, 8) of the sins his nation and people had committed against the Lord.
Too many people today are ashamed of nothing but Jesus (Mk 8:38) and His gospel (Rm 1:16). Jesus bluntly declares: "If anyone in this faithless and corrupt age is ashamed of Me and My doctrine, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes with the holy angels in His Father's glory" (Mk 8:38).
Repent! Be ashamed of sin and wickedness. Repent of being ashamed of Jesus. Like Daniel, pray for forgiveness for yourself, your nation, and your people.

Prayer: Father, I will look to You so that I will not be shamefaced but rather radiant with joy (Ps 34:6).

Promise: "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Pardon, and you shall be pardoned." -Lk 6:37

Praise: Dan harbored resentment for many years against his stern, unloving father. Jesus softened both their hearts and now they are close.

God Bless you and all you care for.

The editor

February 24th, 2013 Second Sunday of Lent

Jesus, in this special time, give us the desire to come and just sit with You.

Let us just relax with You, and feel the joy and peace that only You can give.

Let Your true presence in Your Eucharist free us from anything that doesn't give
You praise and glory, and help us confess whatever it is in Your sacrament of reconciliation.

Let Your Divine Spirit come upon us, and fill us with the knowledge that we are
loved by You in a way that is impossible to understand, without Your Spirit residing in us.

Let us not only see You in the Eucharist, but also see You within everyone that is in our lives.

Thank You Jesus for Your love, and thank You Jesus for Your food of Life.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SLEEPING IT OFF
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/24/2013

"They appeared in glory and spoke of His passage, which He was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. Peter
and those with Him had fallen into a deep sleep." -Luke 9:31-32

When Jesus talks about the cross, we tend to doze off, if not physically, then at least spiritually.
Did you ever notice what the subject was at the times when you fell asleep in church or fell asleep
praying? You may find yourself snoring or at least daydreaming when Jesus brings up the cross of
self-denial and self-sacrifice. When Jesus was suffering the agony in the garden of Gethsemani, the
three apostles He took with Him had fallen asleep (Lk 22:45). At Jesus' Transfiguration, Moses and
Elijah were talking to Jesus about His "passage" from earth to heaven. This "passage" included
Jesus' sufferings on the cross. Once again, we find Peter, James, and John in "a deep sleep."

Sleep can be used for rest or for escape. We are tempted to use it for escape, especially when it's
time each day to take up our cross and follow Jesus (Lk 9:23). We need a wake-up call. Jesus'
Transfiguration was an unsuccessful attempt to wake us up to the cross. However, Pentecost was
successful. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the early Church carried the cross.

Beginning this Lent, let's quit sleeping through Jesus' command to share in His agony and suffering.
Let's have "com-passion"; let's suffer with Him. "Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ
will give you light" (Eph 5:14).

Prayer: Father, may I suffer with Jesus and be glorified with Him (Rm 8:17).

Promise: "Take as your guide those who follow the example that we set. Unfortunately, many go about
in a way which shows them to be enemies of the cross of Christ." -Phil 3:17-18

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory!

GIFT-LISTS

"Seek eagerly after love. Set your hearts on spiritual gifts." -1 Corinthians 14:1

Pope John Paul II has taught: "The Holy Spirit, while bestowing diverse ministries in Church
communion, enriches it still further with particular gifts or promptings of grace, called
charisms...The charisms are received in gratitude both on the part of the one who receives them,
and also on the part of the entire Church. They are in fact a singularly rich source of grace
for the vitality of the apostolate and for the holiness of the whole Body of Christ
(The Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, 24).

Pope John Paul II has also taught: "The Spirit of Jesus, received by the humble and docile
heart of the believer, brings about the flourishing of Christian moral life and the witness
of holiness amid the great variety of vocations, gifts, responsibilities, conditions and life
situations. As Novatian once pointed out - here expressing the authentic faith of the Church - it
is the Holy Spirit 'who confirmed the hearts and minds of the disciples, who revealed the
mysteries of the Gospel, who shed upon them the light of things divine. Strengthened by his gift,
they did not fear either prisons or chains for the name of the Lord; indeed they even trampled
upon the powers and torments of the world, armed and strengthened by him, having in themselves
the gifts which this same Spirit bestows and directs like jewels to the Church, the Bride of
Christ. It is in fact he who raises up prophets in the Church, instructs teachers, guides
tongues, works wonders and healings, accomplishes miracles, grants the discernment of spirits,
assigns governance, inspires counsels, distributes and harmonizes every other charismatic gift'
" (The Splendor of Truth, 108).

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2013-02.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

FAITH AND CHARITY

FAITH LEADS TO LOVE

Faith, which sees the love of God revealed in the pierced heart of Jesus on the Cross, gives
rise to love... Love is the light ... that can always illuminate a world grown dim and give us
the courage needed to keep living and working.

MAKE ROOM FOR GOD

When we make room for the love of God, then we become like Him, sharing in His own charity. If
we open ourselves to His love, we allow Him to live in us and to bring us to love with Him, in
Him, and like Him; only then does our faith become truly "active through love" (Gal 5:6); only
then does He abide in us (cf. 1 Jn 4:12).

"SCALING THE MOUNTAIN"

The Christian life consists in continuously scaling the mountain to meet God and then coming
back down, bearing the love and strength drawn from Him, so as to serve our brothers and
sisters with God's own love.

"They appeared in glory and spoke of His passage, which He was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. Peter and those with Him had fallen into a deep sleep." -Luke 9:31-32

When Jesus talks about the cross, we tend to doze off, if not physically, then at least spiritually. Did you ever notice what the subject was at the times when you fell asleep in church or fell asleep praying? You may find yourself snoring or at least daydreaming when Jesus brings up the cross of self-denial and self-sacrifice. When Jesus was suffering the agony in the garden of Gethsemani, the three apostles He took with Him had fallen asleep (Lk 22:45). At Jesus' Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah were talking to Jesus about His "passage" from earth to heaven. This "passage" included Jesus' sufferings on the cross. Once again, we find Peter, James, and John in "a deep sleep."
Sleep can be used for rest or for escape. We are tempted to use it for escape, especially when it's time each day to take up our cross and follow Jesus (Lk 9:23). We need a wake-up call. Jesus' Transfiguration was an unsuccessful attempt to wake us up to the cross. However, Pentecost was successful. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the early Church carried the cross.
Beginning this Lent, let's quit sleeping through Jesus' command to share in His agony and suffering. Let's have "com-passion"; let's suffer with Him. "Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light" (Eph 5:14).

Prayer: Father, may I suffer with Jesus and be glorified with Him (Rm 8:17).

Promise: "Take as your guide those who follow the example that we set. Unfortunately, many go about in a way which shows them to be enemies of the cross of Christ." -Phil 3:17-18

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory!

THE PROOF OF BEING A CHRISTIAN - One Bread, One Body, 2/23/2013

Saturday, February 23, 2013, St. Polycarp

Deuteronomy 26:16-19, Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8, Matthew 5:43-48
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/022313.cfm

THE PROOF OF BEING A CHRISTIAN

"My command to you is: love your enemies." -Matthew 5:44

Naturally, we fight fire with fire. "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" (Mt 5:38; Ex 21:24). If you hit me, I'll hit you. If you sue me, I'll sue you. We feel like giving people a dose of their own medicine. We say: "Two can play this game." We treat others not as we want them to treat us (see Mt 7:12), but as they have treated us (see Jer 50:15, 29). We respond in kind, and do unto others as they have done unto us. We automatically respond to our enemies by becoming like them, thus continuing the destructive cycle of injustice and violence.
However, Jesus gives us the power to rise above our human nature. "When He was insulted, He returned no insult. When He was made to suffer, He did not counter with threats" (1 Pt 2:23). In Christ, we can do to those who have hurt us the opposite of what they have done to us. We can love those who hate us and pray for those who curse us (see Mt 5:44; Lk 6:27-28). Because Jesus has offered us a new nature by His death on the cross, we can feed, clothe, and love our enemies (Rm 12:20) and refuse to "repay injury with injury" (Rm 12:17). When we try to conquer evil with evil, we are conquered by evil (see Rm 12:21). Only by responding to evil with good will we conquer evil (Rm 12:21).
Follow the way of Jesus. Die for your enemies rather than try to make them die for you. Then, by your death and life, you will share with Jesus in putting sin and death to death.

Prayer: Father, as I fast this Lent, give me Your heart and mind toward those who have hurt me.

Promise: "Today the Lord is making this agreement with you: you are to be a people peculiarly His own, as He promised you." -Dt 26:18

Praise: St. Polycarp was faithful to his Savior even while being burned to death.

A HOUSE BUILT ON SAND - One Bread, One Body, 2/22/2013

Friday, February 22, 2013, Chair of St. Peter

1 Peter 5:1-4, Psalm 23:1-6, Matthew 16:13-19

A HOUSE BUILT ON SAND

" 'You are the Messiah,' Simon Peter answered, 'the Son of the living God!' " -Matthew 16:16

Every denomination has a "pope." Every denomination, no matter how large or small, has someone who occupies a prime position of authority. The Catholic Church has a Pope. In fact, she has an unbroken succession of pontiffs stretching all the way back to St. Peter, her first Pope.
Just as the patriarchs Abram and Jacob received new names to signify their special mission, so Jesus gives the name of Cephas (or Peter), which means 'Rock,' to Simon. This name change clearly illustrates to Jesus' followers that Peter occupies a place of primacy among the apostles.
Jesus gives Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:19). The significance of this action is rooted in Isaiah in the passage where Eliakim receives the keys of the office of prime minister held by Shebna. Isaiah prophesies God's word to Eliakim: "I will place the key of the house of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open" (Is 22:22). Peter is also commissioned with the power to bind and loose.
Doubters have tried for centuries to deny that Jesus founded a visible Church under the leadership of St. Peter. However, an honest study of Scripture and history causes their best efforts to crumble like a house built on sand (see Mt 7:26-27).

Prayer: Lord, change me so that I live up to my name, Christian.

Promise: "Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come." -Ps 23:6

Praise: St. Peter glorified God in his life and was blessed to glorify God in his martyr's death.

LEAPING OVER THE EDGE - One Bread, One Body, 2/21/2013

Thursday, February 21, 2013, St. Peter Damian

Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25, Psalm 138:1-3, 7-8, Matthew 7:7-12

LEAPING OVER THE EDGE

"My Lord, our King, You alone are God. Help me, who am alone and have no help but You, for I am taking my life in my hand." -Esther C:14-15

As Esther prayed to the Lord, she said that she was taking her life in her hand because she was about to go to the king without being invited. This act was punishable by death (Est 4:11, 16).
Likewise, we are living and praying in a life-or-death situation. We are endangered by "the terror of the night," "the arrow that flies by day," "the pestilence that roams in darkness," and "the devastating plague at noon" (Ps 91:5-6). Our opponent, the devil, who is "the prince of death" (Heb 2:14), and his destroying angels (see Rv 9:11) are "prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Pt 5:8). Our guardian angels have done a fantastic job to protect us from repeated attempts on our lives.
So pray as if your life depends on it, because it probably does. Fast and pray as if this Lent is your last one on earth. Fast and pray with utter trust in and abandonment to the Lord. We live and pray in the shadows of death (Ps 23:4, RSV-CE) but also on the threshold of entrance into the eternal life of heaven. Pray: "Now, Master, You can dismiss Your servant in peace" (Lk 2:29). "Father, into Your hands I commend My Spirit" (Lk 23:46).

Prayer: Father, "this is our accepted time, this is our salvation." May prayer and fasting be our hope. May penance be our vocation. (From the hymn This is Our Accepted Time.)

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to anyone who asks Him!" -Mt 7:11

Praise: St. Peter Damian came out of the monastery to bring renewal to the diocesan clergy, propagating devotion to Christ's Passion.

TWO-TIMING - One Bread, One Body, 2/20/2013

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Jonah 3:1-10, Psalm 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19, Luke 11:29-32

TWO-TIMING

"The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time." -Jonah 3:1

God came to Jonah a second time (Jon 3:1), and a sinful city of 120,000 people repented (Jon 3:5; 4:11). Jesus came to Peter a second time (Jn 21:1ff), and soon three thousand people converted and were baptized (Acts 2:41).
We are called to spread God's Word, and the Lord gives us a major role to play in distributing His Word. Certainly, developing and exercising our spiritual and natural gifts, our creativity at spreading the Word of God and permeating the culture with the Gospel (Catechism, 899) are important. That's why God calls us and gifts us with the Holy Spirit. That's why we write this booklet! However, the biggest issue is not our abilities, but whether we will get off the couch and get to work.
Notice the parable of the sower and the seed (Mk 4:3). Jesus doesn't mention whether the sower was emotionally distressed, bitter, happy, or skillful. The only thing Jesus says about the sower is that he "went out sowing" (Mk 4:3). That is, the sower got up that morning and put the seed out. God's Word has power of its own (Is 55:10-11; Heb 4:12). It grows and spreads of itself (Mk 4:27), not because of the merits of whoever sows it.
"There is no chaining the word of God!" (2 Tm 2:9) So, Satan instead tries to persuade us to slip into some chains. If he can shackle us with chains of sin, addictions, compulsions, sloth, fear, apathy, etc., he's kept the Word of God from spreading as far as it otherwise would. Have you let God down? God lets you start a second time. Get out there and get out God's Word.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I be generous in doing Your will and spreading Your Word.

Promise: "The people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth." -Jon 3:5

Praise: Richard has spent three decades teaching the Bible to the elderly, adults, teenagers, and young children.

THE FATHER'S LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 2/19/2013

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Isaiah 55:10-11, Psalm 34:4-7, 16-19, Matthew 6:7-15

THE FATHER'S LOVE

"Our Father..." -Matthew 6:9

I have six children. They all call me "Dad." For many years, I have tried to follow the example of our heavenly Father and anticipate the needs of each child (see Mt 6:8). After all these years of lovingly building relationships with them, it would grieve me if one of my children stiffly addressed me as "Sir." I would feel as if they no longer remembered that I loved them. Hopefully, my children don't worry about having a place to stay or food to eat. If children can trust an earthly father, how much more should we trust our heavenly Father to provide for us? (Mt 7:11)
Perhaps Jesus' most radical teaching is His revelation that we are to address God as "our Father" (Mt 6:9). Jesus taught that God our Father so loves us that He drops His dignity, runs to us even when we are least lovable, and celebrates our repentance (Lk 15:20ff). When we are not worthy of His love, Jesus reminds us that our heavenly Father "so loved the world" and each one of us "that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life" (Jn 3:16).
Jesus began Lent by hearing that He was the Beloved Son of His heavenly Father (Lk 3:22). In this initial part of Lent, imitate Jesus by focusing on your heavenly Father's love for you. Thus confirmed as His beloved sons and daughters, you will trust Him enough to let Him lead you through His Lenten discipline without questioning His love for you (see Heb 12:5-10).

Prayer: Father, pour out Your love in my heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). May Your love bear great fruit through me.

Promise: "Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him." -Mt 6:8

Praise: When having a difficult time connecting with God, Rosa thinks of all the good He has done for her.

I REALLY MISS YOU, JESUS

"Lord, when did we see You?" -Matthew 25:37

Yesterday was Sunday, when Catholics are obliged to worship Jesus in Mass. Many people saw Jesus yesterday. Since a sizable percentage of registered Catholics fail to believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, many people who actually received His body and blood yesterday failed to recognize Him. Did you miss Jesus when you saw Him, or did you recognize Him?
Jesus is not easy to recognize. Even His relative, John the Baptizer, did not recognize Him (Jn 1:31, 33). In today's Gospel reading, both the just and the unjust saw Jesus, but failed to recognize Him (Mt 25:37, 44). Amazingly, the just actively served Him, but still missed Him! This should give pause to us who are His disciples. How many times did we fail to recognize Jesus this week?
Jesus might not be easy to recognize now, but no one will miss Him on Judgment Day. On that day, "every eye shall see Him, even of those who" have rejected Him (Rv 1:7). Finally, a day will come when we won't miss seeing Him, but then the season of mercy will be over, and it will be too late to repent.
Therefore, repent today. Confess your sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Serve Jesus in the poor, the downtrodden, the co-worker, the starving, the persecuted, and your enemies (see Mt 25:35-36). "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Lv 19:18). You may miss recognizing Jesus, even as you serve Him, but you won't miss out on being with Him forever in the ecstasy of heaven.

Prayer: "Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before You, O Lord, my Rock" (Ps 19:15).

Promise: "The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul." -Ps 19:8

Praise: A friend's funeral made Joan realize that without God she too was under a death sentence. She reformed her life and returned to Church.

PM eNewsletter First Sunday of Lent

February 17th, 2013 First Sunday of Lent

Heavenly Jesus, as we begin the disipline of Lent, open up our hearts, souls, and minds,
to really do this Lent, what would best draw us into a real relationship with You.

Jesus, help us to see that You love us with a love that can't really be understood.

Yet Lord, You want us to let go, and let You be the real Lord of our lives.

Let us also see that You are constantly willing to forgive us, and make us alive with
life.

Let us not understand, but rather just trust You, that You have a plan for our lives
that will work out as You want it to.

Jesus, help us to love all in our lives, and help us to be truly Christed to all
around us.

Let us be light to the world and let us draw others to You through our love and help
to others.

Let us do Lent in peace and joy of heart.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday LENT IN THE SPIRIT
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=2/17/2013

"Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, then returned from the Jordan and was conducted by the Spirit
into the desert for forty days." -Luke 4:1-2

Lent is imitating Jesus' forty days in the desert. Jesus began His "Lent" filled with and led by
the Holy Spirit. He also came out of the Lenten desert "in the power of the Spirit" (Lk 4:14).
The Holy Spirit directed Jesus every step of the way through the "first Lent."

Are we letting the Spirit direct us this Lent? Are we fasting, praying, giving alms, and
evangelizing in the Spirit? The Spirit will call us to do things this Lent we'd never thought of
before. If these things seem impossible, the Spirit will help us in our weakness (Rm 8:26). By
the Spirit, we will be able to fast in some way for each of the forty days of Lent. By praying
in the Spirit, we will pray this Lent on a new level, with greater perseverance and depth. With
the faith and love of the Spirit, we will give alms so much that we will have to make sacrifices
and simplify our lives. Finally, this Lent, we will not only resist temptations but also make a
frontal attack on the gates of hell (Mt 16:18-19), as we win the world for Christ through
Spirit-filled evangelization.

A Spirit-led Lent is different from the Lents to which many of us have been accustomed. A
Spirit-filled Lent is like Jesus' Lent. Let us follow in His footsteps.

Prayer: Jesus, may this Lent be like the first one.

Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God
raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." -Rm 10:9

Praise: Praise Jesus, eternal, risen, victorious High Priest, tempted and sinless! (Heb 4:15)

"A VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY"

The celebration of Lent, in the context of the Year of Faith, offers us a valuable opportunity
to meditate on the relationship between faith and charity: between believing in God - the God
of Jesus Christ -and love, which is the fruit of the Holy Spirit and which guides us on the
path of devotion to God and others.

"CONQUERED BY CHRIST'S LOVE"

Christians are people who have been conquered by Christ's love and accordingly, under the
influence of that love ... they are profoundly open to loving their neighbor in concrete ways.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT

This attitude arises primarily from the consciousness of being loved, forgiven, and even
served by the Lord, Who bends down to wash the feet of the Apostles and offers Himself on
the Cross to draw humanity into God's love.

LENT IN THE SPIRIT

"Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, then returned from the Jordan and was conducted by the Spirit into the desert for forty days." -Luke 4:1-2

Lent is imitating Jesus' forty days in the desert. Jesus began His "Lent" filled with and led by the Holy Spirit. He also came out of the Lenten desert "in the power of the Spirit" (Lk 4:14). The Holy Spirit directed Jesus every step of the way through the "first Lent."
Are we letting the Spirit direct us this Lent? Are we fasting, praying, giving alms, and evangelizing in the Spirit? The Spirit will call us to do things this Lent we'd never thought of before. If these things seem impossible, the Spirit will help us in our weakness (Rm 8:26). By the Spirit, we will be able to fast in some way for each of the forty days of Lent. By praying in the Spirit, we will pray this Lent on a new level, with greater perseverance and depth. With the faith and love of the Spirit, we will give alms so much that we will have to make sacrifices and simplify our lives. Finally, this Lent, we will not only resist temptations but also make a frontal attack on the gates of hell (Mt 16:18-19), as we win the world for Christ through Spirit-filled evangelization.
A Spirit-led Lent is different from the Lents to which many of us have been accustomed. A Spirit-filled Lent is like Jesus' Lent. Let us follow in His footsteps.

Prayer: Jesus, may this Lent be like the first one.

Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." -Rm 10:9

Praise: Praise Jesus, eternal, risen, victorious High Priest, tempted and sinless! (Heb 4:15)

FAST RENEWAL - One Bread, One Body, 2/16/2013

FAST RENEWAL

" 'Repairer of the breach,' they shall call you, 'Restorer of ruined homesteads.' " -Isaiah 58:12

One of God's goals this Lent is to renew the Church. "The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake, and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up" (Is 58:12). A prerequisite for Church renewal is a renewal of our individual strength (Is 58:11). For individual renewal, we need to receive enlightenment, guidance, and nourishment (Is 58:10-11). Receiving these special gifts is based on removing from our midst "oppression, false accusation, and malicious speech" and on giving our bread to the hungry (Is 58:9-10).
Such expressions of justice are in turn based on obeying other commands of the Lord, especially His command to fast. The renewal of the Church results from a long process. Fasting is a catalyst for this process. Therefore, fasting is one of the most important things we can do to begin renewing the Church.
If we imitate Jesus as He fasted forty days in the desert, this Lent will be a great opportunity to serve the Church. By fasting, we set free the oppressed (Is 58:6), drive out demons (Mt 17:21), inaugurate ministries (Lk 4:1ff; Acts 13:3), and appoint leaders (Acts 14:23). By faithful fasting this Lent, some of us may make the greatest contribution of our lives to the renewal of the Church. Cherish this Lenten fast.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to fast more frequently and faithfully.

Promise: "I have not come to invite the self- righteous to a change of heart, but sinners." -Lk 5:32

Praise: During Lent, Jan returned to the Church after an absence of many years. She made a full Confession on Holy Saturday, and celebrated Easter by receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

FAST IMPRESSIONS

"Your disciples do not" fast. -Matthew 9:14

Jesus said that when we fast, we should freshen up so no one can see we are fasting (Mt 6:17-18). He meant that we should fast so as to please God, not man.
In one sense, however, people should be able to tell we are fasting no matter how nice our complexion is. Fasting causes drastic changes which are visible to those around us.
* Fasting, along with prayer, is the most effective weapon to bring down the strongholds of the evil one (Gospel of Life, Pope John Paul II, 100).
* Fasting sets free the oppressed, the captive, the depressed, the addicted, and the homeless (Is 58:6-7).
* Our fasting from food causes more of our money to be available to feed and clothe the hungry and poor (Is 58:7).
* Immovable, mountainous problems are overcome by fasting and prayer (Mt 17:21, NAB).
* Fasting is accompanied by humility, selflessness, and a lack of strife with those around us (Is 58:3-4).

In summary, true fasting pierces the clouds and causes our prayers to be heard and answered by God (Is 58:4). True fasting brings undeniable results.
Judge your own fasting by the above Scriptural results of true fasting. Are you fasting in such a way that your world is changing? Could others tell you are fasting simply by observing the life-changing and world-changing power emanating from your life?

Prayer: Father, pour out Your love in our hearts (Rm 5:5) so that we will desire to fast as You wish (Is 58:6) and so change the world.

Promise: "Your vindication shall go before you." -Is 58:8

Praise: Marcia found a new freedom when giving up TV for Lent.

LOVE-LIFE - One Bread, One Body, 2/14/2013

For Lent read our brochure entitled, "The Secret of Fasting"

Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021413.cfm

LOVE-LIFE

"Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self." -Luke 9:23

In a cartoon, the patient said to the psychiatrist: "Do I have to do my own thing? Do I have to do what feels good?" Living for self and pleasure gets old.
We like this kind of life at first, but after a while we suspect we're destroying ourselves and wasting our lives. Jesus said as much: "Whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. What profit does he show who gains the whole world and destroys himself in the process?" (Lk 9:24-25)
Those who live to do their own thing are to be pitied. They have traded their birthright for trifles (see Gn 25:31ff), and have given up life and love for a shadow of human existence. The only way to escape slavery to self, the emptiness of pleasure-seeking, and the boredom of doing your own thing is to love Jesus with all your heart.
Only Christ's love makes life worth living, gives meaning to everyday existence, and provides sure hope for the future. What joy there is in not being enslaved to self! What freedom is to be found in not reducing life to mere pleasure-seeking! What sweetness in carrying the daily cross, for Jesus' yoke is easy and His burden light! (Mt 11:30)

Prayer: Father, I accept the power of the cross and reject the futility of doing my own thing.

Promise: "I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the Lord, your God, heeding His voice, and holding fast to Him." -Dt 30:19-20

Praise: Sts. Cyril and Methodius opened up several nationalities to the good news with their missionary zeal.

(For a related teaching, order our tape on "Developing a Deep Personal Relationship with Jesus" on audio AV 52-1 or video V-52.)

A LIMITED LENT?

"They are already repaid." -Matthew 6:2, 5, 16

When Jesus says that those who perform religious acts for human recognition are "repaid," He uses a Greek word which suggests commercial payment, that is, payment in full for a service rendered (Mt 6:2, 5, 16). As an example of this term, a plumber fixes your sink and gets the full payment, but only that amount of pay. Jesus says that those who give alms, pray, and fast to further their reputation are looking for the wages of applause. So they get their satisfaction: the repayment. They get nothing more.
Jesus uses a different Greek word when He promises that when you keep your almsgiving, prayer, and fasting secret, your heavenly Father "will repay you" (Mt 6:4, 6, 18). This term means a reward of unspecified amount, determined only by the generosity of the Giver. The entire reward, if any, is up to the One Who is merciful and kind, gracious and unlimited in generosity (Ps 103:8; Ex 20:6; Mt 10:41-42; 2 Cor 9:10). He might give no reward whatsoever, or He might open "the floodgates of heaven, to pour down blessing upon you without measure" (Mal 3:10).
Will the focus of your self-denials this Lent be simply to get the repayment of feasting at Easter, or to receive the lavish outpoured reward of God? (see Ti 3:6) This Lent, place no limits on what the Lord wishes to do in your life. Give Him free rein in directing your prayer, fasting, charity, and suffering. Let Him speak, love, forgive, and work through you. Let Him bless you superabundantly.

Prayer: Father, may I do everything for an audience of One: You.

Promise: "For our sakes God made Him Who did not know sin, to be sin, so that in Him we might become the very holiness of God." -2 Cor 5:21

Praise: Margaret reads the Bible for the blind.
