February 17th, 2013 First Sunday of Lent
Heavenly Jesus, as we begin the disipline of Lent, open up our hearts, souls, and minds,
to really do this Lent, what would best draw us into a real relationship with You.
Jesus, help us to see that You love us with a love that can't really be understood.
Yet Lord, You want us to let go, and let You be the real Lord of our lives.
Let us also see that You are constantly willing to forgive us, and make us alive with
life.
Let us not understand, but rather just trust You, that You have a plan for our lives
that will work out as You want it to.
Jesus, help us to love all in our lives, and help us to be truly Christed to all
around us.
Let us be light to the world and let us draw others to You through our love and help
to others.
Let us do Lent in peace and joy of heart.
Amen and Amen.
Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday LENT IN THE SPIRIT

"Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, then returned from the Jordan and was conducted by the Spirit
into the desert for forty days." -Luke 4:1-2
Lent is imitating Jesus' forty days in the desert. Jesus began His "Lent" filled with and led by
the Holy Spirit. He also came out of the Lenten desert "in the power of the Spirit" (Lk 4:14).
The Holy Spirit directed Jesus every step of the way through the "first Lent."
Are we letting the Spirit direct us this Lent? Are we fasting, praying, giving alms, and
evangelizing in the Spirit? The Spirit will call us to do things this Lent we'd never thought of
before. If these things seem impossible, the Spirit will help us in our weakness (Rm 8:26). By
the Spirit, we will be able to fast in some way for each of the forty days of Lent. By praying
in the Spirit, we will pray this Lent on a new level, with greater perseverance and depth. With
the faith and love of the Spirit, we will give alms so much that we will have to make sacrifices
and simplify our lives. Finally, this Lent, we will not only resist temptations but also make a
frontal attack on the gates of hell (Mt 16:18-19), as we win the world for Christ through
Spirit-filled evangelization.
A Spirit-led Lent is different from the Lents to which many of us have been accustomed. A
Spirit-filled Lent is like Jesus' Lent. Let us follow in His footsteps.
Prayer: Jesus, may this Lent be like the first one.
Promise: "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God
raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." -Rm 10:9
Praise: Praise Jesus, eternal, risen, victorious High Priest, tempted and sinless! (Heb 4:15)

Pope John Paul II has taught: "The Holy Spirit, while bestowing diverse ministries in Church

for the vitality of the apostolate and for the holiness of the whole Body of Christ

Pope John Paul II has also taught: "The Spirit of Jesus, received by the humble and docile
heart of the believer, brings about the flourishing of Christian moral life and the witness
of holiness amid the great variety of vocations, gifts, responsibilities, conditions and life
situations. As Novatian once pointed out - here expressing the authentic faith of the Church - it
is the Holy Spirit 'who confirmed the hearts and minds of the disciples, who revealed the
mysteries of the Gospel, who shed upon them the light of things divine. Strengthened by his gift,
they did not fear either prisons or chains for the name of the Lord; indeed they even trampled
upon the powers and torments of the world, armed and strengthened by him, having in themselves
the gifts which this same Spirit bestows and directs like jewels to the Church, the Bride of
Christ. It is in fact he who raises up prophets in the Church, instructs teachers, guides
tongues, works wonders and healings, accomplishes miracles, grants the discernment of spirits,
assigns governance, inspires counsels, distributes and harmonizes every other charismatic gift'
" (The Splendor of Truth, 108).

As we imitate Jesus' 40-day fast and prepare to renew our baptismal promises on Easter Sunday,
the Lord calls us to intensify our reading of His word. In this Lent, I invite you to ask for and
accept the grace to read through all the prophets of the Old Testament except Isaiah.
(We encourage you to read the prophet, Isaiah, during Advent). The following arrangement will
help you. As you read the Lord's prophetic word, you will repent deeply and have the springtime
of your life in the Spirit.

New Technology for Bible Telephone Line Ministry
Local Numbers Double Practically Overnight!
The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 19 years. Begun by Fr. Al
in 1991, it now continues with three teachers trained by him and by Presentation
Ministries. In cities where local numbers have been established, the BTL provides
callers with a short teaching on the readings for the daily Mass. It is available 24
hours a day and 7 days a week. Callers may also leave a short prayer request which
will be shared on the line with the other callers the next day.
