GOD, OUR VINDICATOR

"Let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. Perhaps the Lord will look
upon my affliction and make it up to me with benefits for the curses he is
uttering this day." —2 Samuel 16:11-12

Many things in this life are worth defending. We are to "fight hard for
the faith" (Jude 3), defend truth (Sir 4:28), uphold the rights of the
poor (Is 1:17), and make sure that the name of God is held as holy (Lk
11:2).

David was cursed viciously by a fellow Israelite as he fled Jerusalem in
disgrace, having been deposed as king by his own son (2 Sm 15:14ff; 2 Sm
16:5ff). He did not defend himself or his honor. He didn't even explain
that he had been wronged by his son. He accepted without bitterness the
calumny of another as a chastisement which would ultimately be for his
good (see Jb 2:10).

Jesus, the Son of David, took this humility a step further. "He humbled
Himself" (Phil 2:8) and accepted the death of a criminal though He was
innocent (Lk 23:32, 41, 47). Through it all, "He was silent and opened not
His mouth" in self-defense (Is 53:7).

When we know God is our Vindicator, we can resist the temptation to defend
our reputation. God intends to do a much better job of vindicating His
children than we could ever do on our own behalf. Jesus announces "a day
of vindication by our God" (Is 61:2). "This is the lot of the servants of
the Lord, their vindication from Me, says the Lord" (Is 54:17). "He will
make justice dawn for you like the light; bright as the noonday shall be
your vindication" (Ps 37:6). "Your vindication shall go before you" (Is
58:8). Shout with Job: "I know that my Vindicator lives" (Jb 19:25).

Prayer: Father, I put my life in Your hands (Ps 31:6).

Promise: "Go home to your family and make it clear to them how much the
Lord in His mercy has done for you." —Mk 5:19

Praise: Cardinal Gabriel let the accusations against him prove themselves
false while he prayed for his accuser.

February 3rd, 4th Sunday in ordinary time

Lord God, this week we start Lent, a time when we should
look at ourselves, and ask what should we give up so that
we can come into the reality of You in our lives.

Jesus, give us the grace, through the power of the Holy Spirit,
to come to know what You want us to give up.

Let us know what sin, or human condition, You want us to
really work on this Lenten period.

Let the Holy Spirit give us the grace to first make the
decision, and then the fortitude to carry it out.

Let us really give up whatever it is that is keeping us from
becoming one in, to and through You.

Let us, we pray, desire to love You with our whole heart,
soul and mind.

Let us realize that only in You will we ever have peace and
real joy in our hearts.

Please don't let Lent be a time of struggle, but rather a time
of preparing to come to new birth in You.

Let us see Your plan of love for us, and let us gladly go

forward trusting in You our Lord, God and King. Amen
and Amen.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday REMNANT DAYS

http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=2/3/2008

"But I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble
and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord; the
remnant of Israel." —Zephaniah 3:12-13

Zephaniah and Isaiah prophesied that, after the destruction of
Jerusalem by the Babylonians, the Lord would leave a remnant
(Zep 3:12; Is 1:9). These prophets also implied that the Lord
would leave some believers not only during the Babylonian
exile but throughout the history of Christianity. This gives the
impression that only some people would be committed
Christians at any particular time.

Jesus seems to have spoken similarly when he said that
many are called but few are chosen (Mt 22:14). When asked
if few were to be saved, Jesus did not directly answer that
question (Lk 13:23), but He did say that many were on the
road to damnation and few on the road to eternal life
(Mt 7:13-14; Lk 13:23-24). Cardinal Newman commented
on this Scripture passage by saying that, although he couldn't
know exactly what Jesus meant by "many" and "few," he
could safely say that "few" isn't more than "many" and "many"
isn't less than "few."

This is a sobering thought. If we fit into this world, if we're like
most people, if we have the same habits, buy the same things,
and watch the same shows, we may be on the road to damnation.

· Do You Renounce Satan?

http://presentationministries.com/brochures/RenounceSatan.asp

"Therefore submit to God; resist the devil and he will take
flight." —James 4:7

Satan is real. He is a fallen angel (Rv 12:7ff) bent on seducing
us, destroying us, and leading us to hell. Although we humans
are very weak and stupid compared to Satan, we have authority
over him by the power of Jesus (see Mt 10:1). In fact, Jesus
has already irreversibly defeated Satan. "The strife is o'er, the
battle done." All that remains is to place Jesus' enemies
beneath His feet (Heb 10:13)

How could we ever lose a war we've already won? The devil's
only hope is to confuse us so much that we don't know that he
exists, that a war is going on, that he is the enemy, and that
Jesus has already won. It seems impossible to ...............

Pope Benedict XVI

If you are far from God, you are far from yourself, says the Pope

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=11625

Vatican City, Jan 30, 2008 / 10:59 am (CNA).- Pope Benedict
returned to his reflections on St. Augustine today, urging
everyone to draw close to Jesus, saying that "those who are
far from God are far from themselves."

In today's general audience, held this morning in the
Paul VI Hall, the Pope again dedicated his catechesis
(for the third time) to the figure of St. Augustine.

The Holy Father recalled how in 1986, for the sixteenth
centenary of the conversion of this Doctor of the Church,
John Paul II wrote the Apostolic Letter
"Augustinum Hipponensem" as a form of "thanksgiving to
God for the gift that He has made to the Church, and
through her to the whole human race, with this wonderful
conversion".

After announcing that Augustine's conversion will be the
subject of his next and final catechesis on the saint, the
Pope indicated that he would dedicate ......................

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official

THE FAMILY AND PEACE

FAMILY NEEDS

The family needs to have a home, employment and a just
recognition of the domestic activity of parents, the possibility
of schooling for children, and basic health care for all. When
society and public policy are not committed to assisting the
family in these areas, they deprive themselves of an essential
resource in the service of peace.

"A HUMANITY AT PEACE"

.. It is essential that we should all be committed to living our
lives in an attitude of responsibility before God, acknowledging
Him as the deepest source of our own existence and that of
others. By going back to this supreme principle we are able to
perceive the unconditional worth of each human being; and
thus to lay the premises for building a humanity at peace.

Living In Reality (held in Cincinnati Area)
Many people, even Christians, are not in touch with reality
because of sin and our secular humanistic culture. During
this retreat, we will focus on four basic timeless realities
revealed by Christ, then center on repentance and total
commitment to Jesus. The retreat will conclude with how
to build a lifestyle in the Spirit through family relationships.

Women's Retreat
As a woman, you are most precious to the Lord ~ come find
out more about receiving God's love and His deepest purpose
for your genuine femininity. "The dignity and the vocation of
women have gained exceptional prominence in recent years.
The hour is coming, in fact has come, when the vocation of
women is being acknowledged in its fullness, the hour in
which women acquire in the world an influence, an effect and
a power never hitherto achieved. That is why, at this moment
when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation,
women imbued with a spirit of the Gospel can do so much to
aid humanity in not falling." – John Paul II, On the Dignity and

"But I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly,

Zephaniah and Isaiah prophesied that, after the destruction of Jerusalem

PERSEVERANCE AND THE PRESENTATION SPIRIT

"He came to the temple now, inspired by the Spirit." —Luke 2:27

"The Holy Spirit was upon" Simeon (Lk 2:25). He had long awaited the
consolation of Israel and the coming of the Messiah (Lk 2:25-26). The Holy
Spirit had even revealed to Simeon that he would personally see the Christ
before he died (Lk 2:26).

The Holy Spirit also was upon Anna. Though Luke's Gospel doesn't
explicitly link Anna and the Spirit, it calls her a prophetess (Lk 2:36).
She used the Spirit's gift of prophecy. The Spirit also inspired Anna to
constantly fast, pray, and worship (Lk 2:37).

Unlike many Israelites before them, Anna and Simeon persevered in
readiness. They were instantly ready to act when Jesus appeared (see Mal
3:2). Many other Israelites weren't ready for the Messiah, failed to
recognize Him, and so rejected Him.

Why did Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus when others couldn't?
* When Jesus came, they readily spoke of Him. Since people speak from
the abundance of their hearts, this shows their hearts were always filled
with God (Lk 6:45).
* They wouldn't allow a long wait to dim their hope in the Lord. Their
suffering and personal holiness led to constant, vigilant, living hope (Rm
5:3-5).
* Though the Holy Spirit hadn't been poured out, they were mysteriously
"inspired by the Spirit" (Lk 2:27). They yielded to the Spirit rather than
ignoring Him.

"Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22). Stay present to Jesus (Mk 14:37). Be
ready for Jesus like Simeon and Anna.

Prayer: Jesus, may I live in the present (Mt 6:34), and present myself
daily to You. Each day I will wait for You in joyful hope.

Promise: "He is able to help those who are tempted." —Heb 2:18

Praise: Praise Jesus, God Incarnate, Who was made subject to the law for
our sakes.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

THE EVIL EYE

"From the roof he saw a woman bathing, who was very beautiful." —2 Samuel
11:2

David's lustful look at Bathsheba resulted in adultery, the murder of
Bathsheba's husband Uriah, and the death of the baby conceived in this
adulterous union. David's adultery also furthered the deterioration and
division of his family. It would have ended in David's eternal damnation
had he not repented, and it all began with one lustful look.

We can see why Jesus commanded us to gouge out our eyes or cut off our
hands to resist the temptation to look at someone lustfully (Mt 5:28ff).
The Lord commands us: "Gaze not about the lanes of the city and wander not
through its squares; avert your eyes from a comely woman; gaze not upon
the beauty of another's wife" (Sir 9:7-8; see also 41:21).

"The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyesight is sound, your whole
body is lighted up, but when your eyesight is bad, your body is in
darkness" (Lk 11:34). Jesus' "sex education" emphasizes avoiding looking
lustfully at others because He focuses not on sex but on chastity.
Chastity is protected by guarding our eyes from sexual temptations and
fixing our eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2).

Prayer: Father, give me pure eyes so I can have a pure body.

Promise: God's kingdom "is like mustard seed which, when planted in the
soil, is the smallest of all the earth's seeds, yet once it is sown,
springs up to become the largest of shrubs." —Mk 4:31-32

Praise: Richard, a young man, continually prays for a rebirth of chastity,
especially among the youth.
