NO FEAR
“Do not fear.” —Matthew 10:28

Fear has always been a major factor in life. Many people even make fear a way of life. They live in fear (see Lk 12:32) and are lifelong slaves through their fear of death (Heb 2:15). In the Bible, the Lord commands us hundreds of times: “Do not be afraid” (see Mt 10:26, 28, 31). He commands: “Do not fear; only believe” (Mk 5:36, RSV-CE). He promises that the fear of the Lord can remove the fear of man from our lives. “He who fears the Lord is never alarmed, never afraid; for the Lord is his Hope” (Sir 34:14). Moreover, “perfect love casts out all fear” (1 Jn 4:18). The fear of the Lord is not only the beginning of wisdom but also of fearlessness (see Prv 9:10). Then our faith, hope, and love in the Lord displace fear from our lives.

The Holy Spirit gives us this fear of the Lord. Faith and love are fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:22), and our hope will not leave us disappointed because the Spirit has poured out Christ’s love in our hearts (Rm 5:5). Therefore, “do not fear.” The Lord says it again and again: “Do not fear.” The Spirit we have received is no fearful Spirit (2 Tm 1:7), “so do not be afraid of anything” (Mt 10:31).

Prayer: Father, may people ask me the reason for my fearlessness (see 1 Pt 3:15).

Promise: “Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord, for He has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!” —Jer 20:13

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, the Victor over death! Alleluia forever! (see 1 Cor 15:55-57)

LORD OF THE WILD
“Learn a lesson from the way the wild flowers grow.”—Matthew 6:28

Wild flower displays in the wilderness alongside the trail are so glorious. God smiles on us through their beauty. Jesus taught us to “learn a lesson from the way the wild flowers grow” (Mt 6:28). What lessons can we learn from the wild flowers? 

• King Solomon was so magnificent that another person of royalty, the Queen of Sheba, became “breathless” when she beheld his glory (1 Kgs 10:5). “King Solomon surpassed in riches and wisdom all the kings of the earth” (1 Kgs 10:23). Yet “not even Solomon in all his splendor was arrayed like one of these” wild flowers (Mt 6:29).
• God clothes the wild flowers in great splendor, but they are gone tomorrow (Mt 6:29-30). Our “time is short” (1 Cor 7:29). Let us live for God while we have time.
• God simply provides everything for them (see Mt 6:26, 30). They bloom where they are, whether anyone notices them or not.
• They open up to the sun; we are to open up to the Son (see Jn 1:4).

•        Through their beauty, we learn that we “are beautiful” to the Lord, our Bridegroom (Sg 4:1).

Prayer: Father, I give You every detail of my life. I trust that You love me and will transform my life for Your greater glory.

Promise: “Your heavenly Father knows all that you need. Seek first His kingship over you, His way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides.” —Mt 6:32-33

Praise: Nora lived a pagan lifestyle in her late teens. She encountered Jesus, married a godly Catholic man, converted to the Faith, and now homeschools her large family for the Lord.

EYE-STOPPER
“Remember, where your treasure is, there your heart is also. The eye is the body’s lamp.” —Matthew 6:21-22

Jesus was talking about earthly treasure, and then He changed the subject to eyes. This implies that what we allow our eyes to look at affects what we treasure. In fact, our eyes have an extreme effect on our values and lifestyle. Jesus said: “If your eyes are good, your body will be filled with light; if your eyes are bad, your body will be in darkness. And if your light is darkness, how deep will the darkness be!” (Mt 6:22-23)

Therefore, we must guard our eyes not only from sexual temptations but also from temptations to a pleasure-seeking, self-centered lifestyle. This should limit our screen time drastically. We may not think screen time is affecting us but the Lord considers that it is. Obviously, advertisers know He’s right. They’re not paying millions of dollars for marketing campaigns that won’t affect us. Eve probably didn’t think looking at the forbidden fruit would affect her, but it resulted in the first sin and the warping of our human nature (Gn 3:6).

The Lord set our eyes into our skull to protect our eyes. He also gave us eyelids, eyelashes, and eyebrows for more protection. Just as He gives our eyes special protection physically, the Lord wants to protect our eyes spiritually. Therefore, we must let Him be Lord of our lives and our eyes.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to close my eyes lest I look on evil (Is 33:15). May my “eyes look straight ahead and [my] glance be directly forward” (Prv 4:25), fixed on Jesus (Heb 12:2).

Promise: “All the people of the land rejoiced and the city was quiet.” —2 Kgs 11:20

Praise: St. Romuald’s father killed a man in a duel. Romuald fled to a monastery and lived a holy life. His father repented and became a monk, encouraged by the holiness of his son.

THE KEY TO THE TREASURE CHEST
“Forgive us the wrong we have done as we forgive those who wrong us.” —Matthew 6:12

When Jesus taught us the “Our Father,” He was trying to teach us to pray (Mt 6:9), to trust in our Abba (see Rm 8:15), and to seek first His kingdom (Mt 6:33). Jesus was not as “successful” as He planned in using the Our Father to teach us, for most of us don’t pray very frequently or fervently. Moreover, many Christians are anxious, fearful, and jealous, as if they couldn’t trust their Abba (see Mt 6:31-32). Also, we see more people seeking the things of the world’s kingdom than seeking first God’s kingdom. For many Christians, the Our Father is a locked treasure chest. We carry it around, display, touch and shake it, but don’t open it and receive its treasures.

Jesus put the key to the Our Father right next to it in the Bible. The five verses of the prayer are followed by a two verse explanation of the command in the Our Father to forgive (Mt 6:14-15). When we forgive, we can learn to pray (see Mk 11:25). When we forgive, we remove an obstacle to receiving our Abba’s love. Seeking first God’s kingdom is also a matter of forgiveness (Mt 18:23ff). Forgiveness is the key to the Our Father. Turn the key.

Prayer: “Father, forgive” (Lk 23:34).

Promise: “You are destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the Lord, to turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to reestablish the tribes of Jacob.” —Sir 48:10

“I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU” (2 Kgs 2:2, 4, 6)
“ ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live,’ Elisha replied, ‘I will not leave you.’ And so the two went on together.” —2 Kings 2:6

We will do greater things than Jesus has done (Jn 14:12) when we receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Elijah’s disciple, Elisha, received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit by refusing to leave him. Likewise, we as Christ’s disciples receive an unrationed outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:34) by refusing to leave Jesus.

We are repeatedly tempted to leave Jesus by committing sins; by being selfish, lazy, or fearful; and by doing our own thing. If we leave Jesus, we lose our life in the Spirit. However, there is hope for those who have left Jesus and are trapped in the powerlessness of selfishness. If we return to Him in repentance, He will forgive us and take us back. Then we will be with Him and be living in the full power of the Holy Spirit.

Don’t leave Jesus — even for a moment. You may never find your way back to Him. Cling to Jesus (see Jn 15:5). Fix your eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2). He loves you.

Prayer: Father, may I never leave You.

Promise: “When you fast, see to it that you groom your hair and wash your face. In that way no one can see you are fasting but your Father Who is hidden; and your Father Who sees what is hidden will repay you.” —Mt 6:17-18

FAST, FASTER, FASTEST
“He fasted, slept in the sackcloth, and went about subdued. Then the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, ‘Have you seen that Ahab has humbled himself before Me?’ ” —1 Kings 21:27-29

Yesterday we read that Jezebel proclaimed a fast and used this as part of a scheme to unjustly execute Naboth (1 Kgs 21:9ff). Today we read that King Ahab, Jezebel’s husband, fasted and asked the Lord for mercy. The Lord accepted Ahab’s fasting and delayed the punishment for Ahab’s family till the next generation (1 Kgs 21:29). Tomorrow we will read that our heavenly Father will repay us for fasting with the right intention (Mt 6:18).

The Lord in His Word for these daily Masses is obviously calling us to fast, that is, to limit our intake of food in order to build His kingdom. Pope St. John Paul II taught: “Jesus Himself has shown us by His own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil (cf Mt 4:1-11). As He taught His disciples, some demons cannot be driven out except in this way (cf Mk 9:29). Let us therefore discover anew the humility and the courage to pray and fast so that power from on high will break down the walls of lies and deceit” (The Gospel of Life, 100). We are greatly privileged to have been chosen by God to fast.

To begin regular fasting, eat only one full meal on Fridays. The Lord will probably extend and change this first step in fasting. Let Him lead you to the full glory and power of fasting.

Prayer: Father, thank You for choosing me to fast. May I be faithful.

Promise: “My command to you is: love your enemies, pray for your persecutors. This will prove that you are sons of your heavenly Father, for His sun rises on the bad and the good, He rains on the just and the unjust.” —Mt 5:44-45

Praise: Beverly has fasted on Fridays for five years.

JEZEBELS - One Bread, One Body, 06/15/2026

JEZEBELS
“They sent the information to Jezebel that Naboth had been stoned to death.” —1 Kings 21:14

Jezebel was about as mean a person as you can find. She put out a contract on Naboth and had him killed to use his vineyard as a vegetable garden for her husband, Ahab. As the king of Israel, Ahab could have had a hundred vegetable gardens, but he wanted the spot Naboth owned because it was convenient. So, Jezebel had Naboth murdered for mere convenience.

When we see people like Jezebel, our first reaction is to wonder how a person could be so mean. We presume we are not like that, yet the reality is we all have a Jezebel inside us. But for God’s grace, we’d do the same or worse than Jezebel. We should first react to a Jezebel by getting the plank of sin out of our own eyes (Mt 7:5).

Often, our next reaction to the Jezebels in our world is what we call “defense.” We reason that if some people are going to be so vicious, we must protect and defend ourselves. However, Elijah’s reaction to Jezebel was not defense, but prophecy (see 1 Kgs 21:17ff) and discipleship. He finally defeated Jezebel and Ahab by making Elisha his disciple and by anointing Hazael and Jehu through Elisha and his disciples (1 Kgs 19:15-17).

In summary, when we see mean and vicious people, our reaction should be repentance, prophecy, and discipleship.

Prayer: Father, give me supernatural reactions and not just natural ones (see 1 Sm 16:7).

Promise: “What I say to you is: offer no resistance to injury. When a person strikes you on the right cheek, turn and offer him the other.” —Mt 5:39

Praise: Through daily reception of the Holy Eucharist, Becca began to see her behavior become more holy.

PRODUCING THE FRUIT OF LOVE
“God proves His love for us.” —Romans 5:8

In this time after Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is trying to produce in us His fruit of love (Gal 5:22), for without love even the greatest gifts of the Spirit amount to nothing (1 Cor 13:1-3). We “love because He first loved us” (1 Jn 4:19). Therefore, the first step in producing the fruit of love in our hearts is to let the Spirit pour out His love in our hearts (Rm 5:5) and to help us know and believe in this love (1 Jn 4:16). Then, as God’s beloved, we will love God, ourselves, our neighbors, and even our enemies.

To produce the fruit of love, the Holy Spirit helps us realize the love God has for us by focusing our attention on Jesus’ crucified love. “It is precisely in this that God proves His love for us” (Rm 5:8). “Is it possible that He Who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for the sake of us all will not grant us all things besides?” (Rm 8:32) Jesus’ death on the cross for love of us is the definitive proof of God’s perfect, unconditional, infinite, and everlasting love for us.

“Beloved, if God has loved us so, we must have the same love for one another” (1 Jn 4:11). “Beloved, let us love one another because love is of God” (1 Jn 4:7). Come, Holy Spirit, to produce the fruit of love.

Prayer: Father, make me “grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love, and experience this love which surpasses all knowledge” (Eph 3:18-19).

Promise: “The harvest is good but laborers are scarce. Beg the Harvest Master to send out laborers to gather His harvest.” —Mt 9:37-38

Praise: Praise Jesus, crucified and risen Lord of life and love! Alleluia! (see 1 Thes 4:14)

“Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.”—1 Kings 19:21

Elijah lived a very eventful life. He called down fire from heaven three times, worked miracles, raised the dead, and rocked the government (see Sir 48:1ff). Nevertheless, the most important event of Elijah’s life may have been the calling of Elisha as his disciple (1 Kgs 19:19ff). The ramifications of this call to discipleship brought down the evil government of Ahab and Jezebel.

You also have many important events in your life. Yet none may be so important as making your children disciples of Jesus. God may have put you in a certain job for many years primarily to make a disciple of one fellow worker. The Lord may have placed you in a particular neighborhood to make disciples for Christ of one or more neighbors. Jesus’ command that we both be and make disciples explains some of the surprises, joys, and sorrows of our lives. Shortly before Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, the climactic moment of His life on earth, Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19).

Discipleship was obviously the focus of Jesus’ earthly life. Therefore, discipleship is also the goal of our lives.

Prayer: Jesus, by Your grace I will be Your disciple. Mother Mary, give me the love in your Immaculate Heart so I will make disciples who disciple others.

Promise: “I set the Lord ever before me; with Him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.” —Ps 16:8

Praise: David prayed fervently to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for strength to overcome sexual temptations. He soon found himself deeply in love with the Lord and filled with the sense of being clean and holy.

HIS HEART IS EXPOSED FOR YOU
“The Lord set His heart on you and chose you.”—Deuteronomy 7:7

It is not because we are excellent or worthy that God loves us, but because we are weak (see Dt 7:7-8). “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8, 16). He actually loves us. He wants us as His friends (Jn 15:14-15).

There is an expression: “He wears his heart on his sleeve.” This means the person’s emotions are easily visible to all. As the image of the Sacred Heart displays so graphically, Jesus wears His heart on His chest. His “emotions” are, as it were, easily visible to all. He loves us with “age-old love” (Jer 31:3), intimately and deeply, with “bands of love…like one who raises an infant to his cheeks” (Hos 11:4).

The Lord hides nothing from us. He died naked and exposed for all to see on the cross. His Sacred Heart is exposed to all. Moreover, He has revealed Himself to us in intimate detail through His Word. Look how intimate and exposed Jesus is in the Eucharist. He is so humble as to come to us through an offering of bread.

In response to His love and vulnerability, love Jesus wholeheartedly. In His Sacred Heart, He has exposed Himself completely for you. He has “set His heart on you” (Dt 7:7). He thirsts for your love (see Jn 19:28). Give Him your love in return.

Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like Yours. Take my heart and never give it back. Give me Your heart and never take it back.

Promise: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you...I am gentle and humble of heart.” —Mt 11:28, 29

Praise: All praise, honor, thanksgiving, and glory be to the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

ENCOURAGING RENEWAL
“He encouraged them all to remain firm in their commitment to the Lord.” —Acts 11:23

St. Barnabas was sent by the church of Jerusalem to the new converts in Antioch. He was so successful in serving this church that “it was in Antioch that the disciples were called Christians for the first time” (Acts 11:26). Antioch was also the first church to send out missionaries (Acts 13:3). It is one of the most important churches in the history of Christianity. Barnabas’ historic success in Antioch was primarily because of his gift of encouragement (see Acts 11:23). His name was even changed from Joseph to Barnabas, meaning “son of encouragement” (Acts 4:36).

Although Barnabas was a prophet and teacher (see Acts 13:1), he used his gift of encouragement to build up the church at Antioch. “Thereby large numbers were added to the Lord” (Acts 11:24). After the church had been built up, he then spent an entire year teaching them (Acts 11:26).

Many of you want to bring renewal and evangelization to your parish, but you feel powerless because you are not the pastor, director of religious education, or school principal. However, you can make an invaluable contribution to renewing your parish, not only by leading or teaching, but by encouraging. If you will encourage the fainthearted to persevere (1 Thes 5:14) and the strong to step out in faith, you will be a catalyst for the renewal of your parish and even for world evangelization.

Prayer: Father, use me to renew a whole parish.

Promise: “Unless your holiness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you shall not enter the kingdom of God.” —Mt 5:20

Praise: St. Barnabas “spoke out fearlessly” (Acts 13:46; 14:3) in spreading the Gospel on the first Christian mission. He acted “in complete reliance on the Lord” (Acts 14:3).

FIRE-POWER
“ ‘Answer me, Lord! Answer me, that this people may know that You, Lord, are God and that You have brought them back to their senses.’ The Lord’s fire came down.” —1 Kings 18:37-38

Elijah showed that Yahweh is the only true God and that Baal and Asherah were false gods served by false prophets. He did this by challenging the false prophets: “You shall call on your gods, and I will call on the Lord. The God Who answers with fire is God” (1 Kgs 18:24).

In the same way, we Christians should be able to show that Jesus is the “only Master and Lord” (Jude 4) and the only “name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). When we put our Christian marriages, relationships, jobs, and neighborhoods right next to those of non-Christians, it should be obvious to all that our lives have been touched by the fire of God.

Unfortunately, many Christians have fallen into sin and refuse to repent. Thus their condition is worse than that of unbelievers (2 Pt 2:20-21). These people bear the name of Christian but deny Christ by their lives. Thus they confuse the world about Christ’s claims to be the only Savior, Lord, and Way to the Father (Jn 14:6).

If we repent, the Christian life will stand out as the only one that has God’s fire. Then “at Jesus’ name every knee must bend...and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God the Father: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!” (Phil 2:10-11)

Prayer: Father, may I not conceal but reveal Jesus’ divinity.

Promise: “Whoever breaks the least significant of these commands and teaches others to do so shall be called least in the kingdom of God.” —Mt 5:19

FROM FED TO FEED
“She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.” —1 Kings 17:15-16

The Lord gave Elijah bread and meat, but finally the brook from which he drank ran dry (1 Kgs 17:7). The Lord told Elijah to move on. He was not only to receive food, but to give it. This transition from receiving food to giving it is a major event in a Christian’s life. Before multiplying the loaves and fish, Jesus challenged the apostles to do this when He said: “Why do you not give them something to eat yourselves?” (Lk 9:13) After His Resurrection, Jesus again told His apostles not only to be fed, but also to feed the sheep (see Jn 21:15, 17).

Are you just reading the teachings in this book? Or are you sharing and teaching them? Maybe it’s time for you to make the transition from only receiving God’s Word to giving it. As in Elijah’s time, there are so many people starving to receive God’s Word. They won’t live long unless they receive faith. Faith comes through hearing, and hearing by God’s Word (Rm 10:17, RNAB). “And how can they believe unless they have heard of Him? And how can they hear unless there is someone to preach?” (Rm 10:14)

It’s better to give than to receive (see Acts 20:35). Give God’s Word to a spiritually starving world.

Prayer: Father, open my lips so that may I share anything You give me from Your Word. Make me a good steward (see Mt 25:14ff).

Promise: “Your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father.” —Mt 5:16

Praise: St. Ephrem proclaimed the lordship of Jesus by transforming secular songs of his day into hymns of praise and truth.

BLESS US, O LORD?
“He began to teach them.” —Matthew 5:2

In St. Matthew’s Gospel, today’s reading of the Beatitudes is the first time Jesus teaches His disciples. Jesus, the great Teacher, knows a strong first impression and solid introduction are critical. So Jesus’ initial teaching is something very important: how to be blessed.

The word “blessed” that Jesus speaks in the Beatitudes can also be translated “happy” (see Mt 5:3-11). In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches a way to happiness and blessedness. Many books in today’s culture that promise happiness are big sellers. With such a large market for happiness, you’d think that Bibles would be flying off the shelves of bookstores, Bible study groups on the Beatitudes would be standing room only, and our parishes would have hundreds of new Catholics coming into the Church each year.

This isn’t the case. The logical explanation is that most people don’t believe Jesus when He tells us how to be blessed and happy. It’s as if people read the Beatitudes and think, “If being meek, sorrowing, and persecuted is how I have to live to be happy, then I’d rather not be ‘blessed.’ ”

In what do we put more faith: the voice of the secular culture or the message of Jesus? Look at Elijah in today’s first reading. He was persecuted by the government for his prophetic message and forced into hiding for years (see e.g. 1 Kgs 19:2). Yet he was blessed, for God miraculously fed him each day (1 Kgs 17:6).

Don’t live a half-life (1 Jn 3:14), settling “for what fails to satisfy” (Is 55:2). Have faith in Jesus (Jn 14:1). Live the Beatitudes.

Prayer: Jesus, may I never take Your place and try to manufacture my own blessings. Grace me to daily live the Beatitudes.

Promise: “My help is from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” —Ps 121:2

Praise: Father Jim’s parish prioritized reaching out to unchurched people within their parish boundaries. Last year, fifty people converted to Catholicism and joined the parish.

“EAT MY FLESH” (see Jn 6:56)
“How can He give us His flesh to eat?” —John 6:52

From a human viewpoint, the above question is understandably difficult to comprehend. “How can [Jesus] give us His flesh to eat?” (Jn 6:52) If we were to re-phrase this question as follows, it might be more comprehensible: “How can this God-Man give us His flesh to eat?”

The Eucharist makes no sense unless we know precisely Who Jesus is: fully God and fully man (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 479-483). A man who is only human cannot give us his flesh to eat and remain alive. A god couldn’t give up his flesh to eat for he wouldn’t have any flesh (see Lk 24:39). A God-Man can, however, give His flesh for us to eat, and still remain alive. Jesus does not die; instead, we who eat His flesh will live (Jn 6:57).

The Catholic Church in the USA recently completed a three-year Eucharistic revival. This teaching was written during the early portion of the revival. You are now reading this teaching after the completion of this revival. Did the Eucharistic revival have the intended impact in your life? Well, that depends on if you gave your flesh for Jesus as He gave His flesh for you. Did you renounce your flesh? (see Lk 14:33) Did you deny your very self, take up your cross, and follow in His footsteps? (Lk 9:23) If not, tell Jesus: “Lord, this is my body to be given up for You.”

Prayer: Father, I open wide my mouth so You can fill it as You wish (Ps 81:11).

Promise: “The man who feeds on Me will have life because of Me.” —Jn 6:57

Praise: “Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore. O, make us love Thee more and more. O, make us love Thee more and more.”

THE PRECIOUS VOCATION OF WIDOWS
“I want you to observe that this poor widow contributed more than all the others.” —Mark 12:43

A mark of “pure worship” and true religion is our concern for widows (Jas 1:27). This suggests that a widow has a very important part in God’s plan, if she “has set her hope on God and continues night and day in supplications and prayers” (1 Tm 5:5). Holy widows are so precious that, when necessary, the Church has paid for their expenses so that they can continue their ministry without being concerned about their livelihood (1 Tm 5:3ff). When widows give all that they have “to live on” (Mk 12:44), even if monetarily that is only worth a cent, they may be giving “more than all the others” (Mk 12:43).

Consequently, widows, make a decision to give your lives to the Lord and His Church. By His grace and your obedient love, make the last years of your life the very best. Guard against giving yourselves up “to selfish indulgence,” for this is “a life of living death” (1 Tm 5:6). Widows, God has good reasons for giving you a few years of life after your husbands’ deaths. Trust Jesus and let Him be Lord of your lives and therefore of your widowhood.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach us the significance of all our vocations. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us to live our vocations to the full.

Promise: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” —2 Tm 4:7

Praise: Narrowly escaping death in a storm, St. Norbert renounced his worldly lifestyle, gave his possessions to the poor, and became a priest.

IN WANT?
“All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” —2 Timothy 3:12, RSV-CE

Persecution is not the devil’s only attempt to stop godly living. Satan attacks early to try to stop godly “wanting.” For instance, the devil wants us to look at Mass as merely our Sunday obligation. Even if we go, he tries to make us not want to go, not want to pray, not want to give, not want to forgive, love, try, or care.

However, the Lord wants us to be consumed by zeal for His house (Jn 2:17). The Lord calls us to want to thirst for Him “as the hind longs for the running waters” (Ps 42:2). You may not yet be living a truly godly life; yet if you just want to do so, you “will be persecuted” (2 Tm 3:12, RSV-CE).  But do not fear Satan and his attempts to persecute you.  Rather, fear God, Who is leading you deeper into His heart (see Mt 10:28).

May our flesh pine and our souls thirst for the living God (Ps 63:2). May our hearts and “flesh cry out for the living God” (Ps 84:3). May we pray and say with Jesus: “I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!” (Lk 12:49)

Don’t be intimidated (Mt 10:26) and manipulated by the threat of persecution. Want, thirst, and burn to live for God.

HOW HE SAVES US
“Obtain the salvation to be found in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.” —2 Timothy 2:10

God wants all to be saved (1 Tm 2:4) from sin, death, Satan, hell and sanctified for perfect love and eternal life. We cannot save ourselves. Jesus alone can save us. We accept His grace of salvation by faith, which empowers us for good works (see Eph 2:8-10). In this way, we work out and obtain our salvation (Phil 2:12).

St. Paul spelled out some of the details of accepting the grace of salvation by faith. He said: “You can depend on this” (2 Tm 2:11). First, we must die with Jesus by being baptized and living our Baptisms, as we repeatedly choose to die to ourselves (see 2 Tm 2:11; 2 Cor 4:10-11). Second, we must persevere in our faith in the Lord (2 Tm 2:12). Third, we should admit we are quite capable of denying Christ (see 2 Tm 2:12). Therefore, we need to accept the grace to overcome this temptation. Finally, we should focus on faithfulness (see 2 Tm 2:13) so that, on Judgment Day, the Lord will say to us: “Well done, good and faithful servants” (see Mt 25:21).

To understand and accept salvation, we must:

• die with Jesus in Baptism,
• persevere in total love for Jesus,
• cry out for the grace not to deny Jesus, and
• be faithful to Jesus and His Church.

“Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, and all your household” (Acts 16:31).

Prayer: Father, may I live my life so as to help lead to salvation as many people as possible (see 1 Cor 9:22).

Promise: “Jesus replied: ‘This is the first: “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! Therefore you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” This is the second, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ’ ” —Mk 12:29-31

Praise: Dr. Norm asked Jesus to heal his patient’s migraine headache. The pain left her.

LIGHT FOR LIFE
Jesus “has robbed death of its power and has brought life and immortality into clear light through the gospel.”—2 Timothy 1:10

I read today’s Eucharistic readings a few times but did not seem to receive any inspirations. Then my surgeon called and said my liver cancer had grown. After that, the words of the Scriptures “jumped off the page”:

• God “is the God of the living, not of the dead” (Mk 12:27).
• “When people rise from the dead,” they “live like angels in heaven” (Mk 12:25).
• Jesus “robbed death of its power and has brought life and immortality into clear light through the gospel” (2 Tm 1:10).

The more we are in touch with reality, the greater the light shining forth from the Bible. We see it when a mother has given birth or a family member dies. We see it when a person is in danger of death, or again when someone has been healed, or yet again when we marry or suffer divorce, or are in joy or pain, have lost or found a job, or have moved somewhere unfamiliar — then our consciousness of the circumstances of life is heightened. In such circumstances, God’s Word is even more obviously “living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates and divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart” (Heb 4:12).

Jesus came to give us abundant life (Jn 10:10). Those who live abundantly see the light of the Scriptures in brilliant radiance. Accept Jesus as your Life (see Jn 14:6). Then He and His Word will be your Light (see Jn 8:12).

Prayer: Father, may I not be afraid to live fully.

Promise: “The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise.” —2 Tm 1:7

Praise: St. Charles Lwanga chose to follow Jesus in purity and holiness and it cost him his very life in martyrdom.

SOON AND VERY SOON
“...looking for the coming of the day of God and trying to hasten it!” —2 Peter 3:12

Are you trying to speed up Jesus’ Second Coming? The sooner the better! No matter how happy you are on earth, you’re still exiled in a strange land (1 Pt 2:11). Won’t you feel good going home to Abba in heaven? So cry out “Maranatha,” “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rv 22:20) Pray, repent, and lead others to Jesus. With every word, the seconds tick away, “soon” becomes “sooner,” and time approaches the timeless. “Come, Lord Jesus!”

We all must get ready for Jesus’ Second Coming because some of God’s holy people are speeding it up. He’s been waiting on us and, when we get as ready as we’re going to be, then He will come riding on the clouds, accompanied by the angels, at the final trumpet blast (1 Thes 4:16). “So, beloved, while waiting for this, make every effort to be found without stain or defilement, and at peace in His sight. Consider that our Lord’s patience is directed toward salvation” (2 Pt 3:14-15).

Don’t sell out to the world. Don’t possess Caesar’s property, because you don’t belong to Caesar (Mk 12:17). You are not of the world, but have been chosen out of the world (Jn 15:19). “What we await are new heavens and a new earth where, according to His promise, the justice of God will reside” (2 Pt 3:13).

Prayer: Jesus, You’ll hurry up if I hurry up. Come, Lord Jesus!

Promise: “The heavens will be destroyed in flames and the elements will melt away in a blaze.” —2 Pt 3:12

Praise: One of the executioners who participated in the martyrdom of Sts. Marcellinus and Peter was so moved by their faith in Jesus that he became a Christian. As he shared the story of their heroic faith, one of his listeners was a boy who later became Pope St. Damasus I.
