BETTER DEAD THAN RED

"Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool." -Isaiah 1:18

You've heard of "white lies." Actually, there is no such thing as a colored lie. There are no black, green, orange, or white lies. However, the Lord does refer to colored sins - at least the color of scarlet: crimson red. As a scarlet red stain is sometimes the most difficult to remove, so certain sins are the most difficult to forget and to forgive ourselves for committing. Even after we have repented, gone to Confession, and been forgiven, we still feel guilty and ashamed.

We must soak in the bath of God's Word (Eph 5:26) if the stain of scarlet sins is to be removed. During Lent, we have a special opportunity to soak in God's Word. Jesus inspired Lent when He overcame the temptations of Satan by repeatedly quoting God's Word (see Mt 4:1ff). At Lent especially, we should abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31). If we do, the truth of God's Word (see Jn 17:17) will set us free (Jn 8:32) from the persistent guilt of scarlet red sins.

Prayer: Father, may I repent so quickly and live so deeply in Your Word that my guilt will only be momentary.

Promise: "Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." -Mt 23:12

Praise: Matthew began meditating before a crucifix. Jesus softened his heart and gave him the Holy Spirit.

OPENING THE DOORS TO THE SUPERNATURAL

"For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you." -Luke 6:38

Our Father wants to give us supernatural love, joy, peace, and much more in "good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over" (Lk 6:38). We indicate our willingness to accept the lavish outpouring of God's love by giving (Lk 6:38), especially by giving forgiveness (Lk 6:37). We give forgiveness by resisting the temptations to condemn others (Lk 6:37) and by accepting the grace to be compassionate as our Father is compassionate (Lk 6:36), especially to our enemies (Lk 6:35).

Loving enemies is a catalyst that results in "all heaven breaking loose" in our lives. Jesus came to give us the abundant life (Jn 10:10), and loving enemies is a key which opens several doors to this life. When we do the natural thing and hate our enemies, we confine ourselves to a merely natural life and deprive ourselves of the glory of the supernatural life in Christ. By loving our enemies, we open the doors to the superabundant life of the risen Christ. Let us prepare for the superabundant, supernatural glories of Easter.

Prayer: Father, in the love of the Spirit, throw open the doors. Jesus, come in glory.

Promise: "...Lord, great and awesome God, You Who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love You and observe Your commandments!" -Dn 9:4

Praise: When struggling with a difficult person, Myra has learned to ask Jesus to give His heart to her; He does.

March 4th, Second Sunday of Lent

Jesus, please open our hearts, souls and minds to truly understand what we are supposed to
do for You this Lent.

Lent is a time for introspection, and a time to understand the path that we are on.

Jesus, help us to see the direction that we are truly taking on our journey to You.

Help us to commit to really becoming a new creation in, to and through You.

Let this Lent be a new begining in our lives, and let this Lent correct any faults that we
need to correct.

Thank You Jesus, for Your love.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Beloved. Listen to Him.' " -Mark 9:7

Even the most committed Christian is not listening to the Lord much of the time. Those we
call "holy" may be merely less disobedient than others. We are so compromised with our
secular, pleasure-seeking lifestyle that we filter out much of what God is saying. We
listen to God just enough to give ourselves the false impression that we usually listen to
God. We need to be shaken up and break out of this rut of disobedience. We need to
experience Jesus in a completely new way so we will listen to Him in a completely new way.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Ps 111:10).

I remember not listening seriously to my father, but then I saw him at his place of
employment. I had never seen him in these circumstances. He was clearly a man of God, of
faith, and of courage. He was transfigured in my eyes. I had never seen my dad in that way.
From that point on, I listened to him as I had never done before.

We're not taking Jesus seriously. We seem unaware of His divinity. We don't listen to Him,
His Word, and His Church. To listen to Him, we must see Jesus new and transfigured to break
out of the rut of disobedience. "Listen to Him" (Mk 9:7).

the onset of Sara's cancer.

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 19 years. Begun by Fr. Al
in 1991, it now continues with three teachers trained by him and by Presentation

Praise: Praise and glory to You, Lord Jesus, for opening the eyes of our hearts!

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

"My command to you is: love your enemies, pray for your persecutors. This will prove that you are sons of your heavenly Father." -Matthew 5:44-45

Can you kill an enemy, even in self-defense, and still love him? Can you legally execute even a convicted murderer and still love him? Can you pay taxes that fuel the arms buildup and still love your enemies? We may find it difficult to believe that we must love all enemies under any circumstances, but this proves we are sons and daughters of the heavenly Father.

Jesus commands us to love our enemies. He expects it and will provide all the power necessary to do this most impossible of all commands. For if we do not bridge by love the gap between ourselves and our enemies, we will create a chasm of eternal separation between us and God. For many, life and eternity will all come down to whether they accepted God's grace to love their enemies. Isn't that what happened to Jesus when He hung upon the cross, breathed His last, and said: "Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing" (Lk 23:34)?

"In a word, you must be made perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5:48). Accept the grace to love your enemies.

Prayer: Jesus, when You forgave Your enemies, You forgave me. Can I refuse to give the forgiveness given to me?

Promise: "You are to be a people peculiarly His own, as He promised you; and provided you keep all His commandments, He will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory above all other nations He has made, and you will be a people sacred to the Lord." -Dt 26:18-19

Praise: St. Katharine not only contributed her money to help Jesus' beloved poor, she dedicated her life to serve them and encouraged others to follow.

FORGETTING SINS

"None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered." -Ezekiel 18:22

We all have committed sins of which we are or should be ashamed. The Lord promises us: "None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him" (Ez 18:22). "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He put our transgressions from us" (Ps 103:12). The Lord "will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins" (Mi 7:19).

To accept the Lord's forgetful forgiveness, we must "turn away from all the sins" we have "committed" and keep all the Lord's statutes (Ez 18:21). If we practice virtue and thereby do "what is right and just" (Ez 18:21-22), our sins will be forgiven and forgotten.

Repent, go to Confession, and by God's grace live a holy life. The Lord wants to forget your sins, and He wants you to forget them too. Your memories will no longer sadden, confuse, or torture you. The memory of His forgiveness will wipe away the memory of your sins. Let Jesus be Lord of your memories.

Prayer: Jesus, may I "do this in memory" of You (Lk 22:19, our transl).

Promise: "If you bring your gift to the altar and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift at the altar, go first to be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift." -Mt 5:23-24

Praise: Laura has learned the wisdom of "give us this day our daily bread," and takes on only one day at a time.

SIMPLY

"If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to anyone who asks Him!" -Matthew 7:11

When Jesus teaches us about prayer, He simply says: "Ask, and you will receive. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you" (Mt 7:7). He does not include any "ifs," "ands," or "buts." He simply says: "Ask and you will receive" (Mt 7:7). We have complicated the matter of prayer through our doubts and confusion. Many times we speculate and theologize, and think we're explaining prayer. However, we really are explaining the effect of our doubts on prayer.

Lent means "spring," a fresh start in our life in the Spirit. We can return to a simple fresh awareness of prayer. We can expect God to be God and overshadow all the human weaknesses confusing us about prayer. We can experience the prayer-power and closeness to God we read about in the Scriptures. We won't have to "explain away" the Scripture, but "believe away" our explanations. Faith, not doubt, will remain. Prayer will no longer be something to read, think, and study about, but something to enjoy.

Sin complicates. Faith simplifies. Let faith simplify your prayer this Lent.

Prayer: Father, may I pray more often, for longer times, with fewer words, and stronger faith.

Promise: "Save us by Your power, and help me, who am alone and have no one but You, O Lord. You know all things." -Est C:25

Praise: Joan worked hard at prayer, and then learned to simply surrender to the Spirit. She then found peace.
