CLOTHES LINES
"All of you who have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Him." —Galatians 3:27

Being clothed with Christ means:

• living “honorably as in daylight” and making “no provision for the desires of the flesh” (Rm 13:13, 14),
• putting “on that new man created in God’s image, whose justice and holiness are born of truth” (Eph 4:24),
• being clothed “with power from on high” (Lk 24:49), that is, the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8),
• clothing ourselves “with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” (Col 3:12),
• clothing ourselves with humility in our “relations with one another” (1 Pt 5:5),
• “putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet” (1 Thes 5:8), and
• putting “on the armor of God” so that we “may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil” (Eph 6:11).

When you were baptized, you were clothed with a baptismal garment to symbolize being clothed with Christ. Have you put on the full clothing and armor of God? Are you living your Baptism to the full?

Prayer: Father, may I "dress for success," that is, eternal life.

Promise: "Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." —Lk 11:28

Praise: Warren, a former Protestant minister, and Nora, his wife, left their congregation and converted to the Catholic faith, receiving their First Communion together just before Christ's Christmas coming.

CROSSING STATE LINES
"The result is that the last state of the man is worse than the first." —Luke 11:26

The worst and sometimes last state of a human being is to be repossessed by a devil and newly possessed by several other devils (Lk 11:26). The first step of the road to this worst state is to be possessed by a devil. Most people think that very few people are in the first or last state. However, in the second letter of Peter, the Lord refers to the first state not as the unusual situation of being demon-possessed but as simply our original state, that is, being a human person with our fallen, demonically-influenced nature. We are freed from this first and original state by being baptized and then living our Baptisms “through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pt 2:20, RSV-CE). Because our Baptisms are irreversible, we can never revert to our first state.

However, we can refuse to live our Baptisms. Thereby we enter a third and worst state of being a fallen-away, lukewarm Christian. When we choose to enter this third state, we make void the cross of Jesus for ourselves (see 1 Cor 1:17), nauseate Jesus (Rv 3:16), cause our Baptisms to backfire, and open the door of our lives to old and new demons. Therefore, we must grow and persevere in our love for the Lord. That is the second and best state, and it should be the last state.

Prayer: Father, may I never love You less.

Promise: "All who believe are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith." —Gal 3:9

Praise: Pope St. John XXIII called for a renewal of both the clergy and the laity by convoking the Second Vatican Council in 1962. Holy Spirit, come and renew Your Church (see Ps 104:30).

FIELDS OF FLESH
"After beginning in the Spirit, are you now to end in the flesh?" —Galatians 3:3

The greatest tragedy possible is to end in the flesh. Jesus died and rose to make us new creations. It would be a great tragedy to die still trapped in our fallen nature and refusing the total newness of life in Christ (see 2 Cor 5:17; cf 2 Pt 2:21).

If we die in the flesh, it will probably not be because we rebelled against God shortly before our deaths. Dying in the flesh, instead of dying to the flesh, is a harvest of corruption produced by the sowing and growing of seeds in the field of the flesh (Gal 6:8). Where are you sowing now? What fields are you beginning to cultivate? Are you planted as a couch-potato in front of the TV or addicted to your handheld electronic device? Are you wasting your seed (see Gn 38:9) in masturbation, artificial contraception, pornography, and other forms of lust? Are you sowing your money in consumerism, gambling, and other forms of greed? The fields in which you sow will determine what harvest you reap (see Hos 8:7).

Therefore, “put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of the flesh” (Rm 13:14). Crucify the “flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24). “You are not to spend what remains of your earthly life on human desires but on the will of God. Already you have devoted enough time to what the pagans enjoy” (1 Pt 4:2-3). Do not live “at the level of the flesh,” but receive God’s mercy (Eph 2:3-4).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, fight against the flesh in my life (Gal 5:17).

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" —Lk 11:13

Praise: Bill returned to weekly Mass after an absence of over ten years because some members of the St. Lawrence Parish Evangelization team cared enough to knock on his door and invite him to join them.

SUBMISSION IS A "SURE THING"
"I went prompted by a revelation, and I laid out for their scrutiny the gospel as I present it." —Galatians 2:2

The Lord commands every Christian to be submissive to God-given authority (Eph 5:21). Wives are to be prime examples of this submission. They are to teach all Christians the peace, joy, freedom, and disciplines of submission (see Eph 5:22).

Submission is not a man-made idea but a gift of God. Thus, God revealed to St. Paul to submit his ministry and preaching to the authority of the leaders of the Jerusalem church (Gal 2:1-2). In Paul’s submission, he received affirmation from the Jerusalem leaders and also “the handclasp of fellowship” (Gal 2:9). Submission leads to affirmation and community. In effect, submission leads to peace and love.

Submission has such good effects not primarily because of the excellence of the people in authority. For example, Cephas, that is, St. Peter, one of the Jerusalem leaders, blundered greatly in Antioch through his duplicity in his relations with Jewish and Gentile Christians (Gal 2:11ff). Submission works because God makes it work even when those in authority don’t work out very well.

Submission is a “sure thing” because God backs up His plans. Be submissive and rejoice.

Prayer: Father, free me from co-dependency and for submission.

Promise: "Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins for we too forgive all who do us wrong." —Lk 11:3-4

Praise: St. Denis and two companions were beheaded for their faith during a persecution of Christians in Paris. Their bodies were thrown into the Seine River and later drawn out of the water by fellow Christians. Praise You, Lord, for immersing and burying our old nature in the waters of Baptism, and drawing us into new life and resurrection with Jesus! St. Denis, pray for us.

"Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it." —Luke 10:42

Right now, you are reading this booklet, One Bread, One Body, which focuses on listening to the Lord as He speaks through the Church’s daily Eucharistic Scripture readings. Thank God for you! You are like St. Mary of Bethany. She chose to put aside all else to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His words (Lk 10:39). With the psalmist, you have said: “I will hear what God proclaims” (Ps 85:9).

Jesus has very good news for you: nothing can separate you from His love (Rm 8:39), and nothing can separate you from listening to Him. If you set aside prime time to choose to listen to Jesus above all else, then you won’t ever be deprived of hearing what He says (Lk 10:42). You’ll hear Him in prayer, and you’ll hear Him when you’re traveling, working, shopping, changing diapers, cooking, etc. You’ll even hear the Lord amid the chaos of loud crowds and confrontations (see Acts 7:56).

Jesus is the Master Communicator. He’ll always find a way to get His message across to you if you want to hear what He’s saying. All He needs is your attention. Choose “the better portion” and listen faithfully to Him (Lk 10:42). He’ll do the rest.

Prayer: Jesus, divine Word sent by the Father, thank You forever for letting me hear Your words. I commit my entire life to You. May I hear every word You speak (Jn 8:47; 18:37).

Promise: "The time came when He Who had set me apart before I was born and called me by His favor chose to reveal His Son to me." —Gal 1:15-16

Praise: St. Luke's parish held a Life in the Spirit Seminar. One of the immediate fruits was deep repentance, as evidenced by the dramatic lengthening of the Confession lines.

THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS
"I assure you, brothers, the gospel I proclaimed to you is no mere human invention. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I schooled in it. It came by revelation from Jesus Christ." —Galatians 1:11-12

We should thank the Lord that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses for Jesus (Heb 12:1). We thank the Lord for all those who have taught us the faith. We thank Him especially for our parents.

Nevertheless, our faith ultimately depends not on our parents, teachers, pastors, or anyone else. Our faith is not so much a matter of schooling but of the divine “revelation from Jesus Christ” (Gal 1:12). The main question from Jesus to us is not: “Who do other people say that I am?” but “Who do you say that I am?” (see Mt 16:13-15) No one enters His kingdom merely because they are related to His children. It’s not good enough to know those who know God. We ourselves must know God (see Jn 17:3; cf Mt 7:21-23).

Make any changes necessary to put yourself in ideal circumstances for the Lord to keep revealing Himself to you personally. Receive the Sacraments. Pray at a specific time each day. Read daily the teachings of the Church in the Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church, and from the Magisterium. Try to pray the Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion each day or as often as possible. Order your life to maximize your opportunities to receive Jesus’ divine revelation to you.

Prayer: Jesus, may I sit at Your feet and listen to Your words (Lk 10:39).

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." —Lk 10:27

Praise: Clyde and Rita have five children. They pray a rosary together daily and offer each decade for the welfare of one child.

HOPE CHEST
"Thus the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones." —Job 42:12

Job is known for his patience, but he should be better known for his hope. If your ten children died in one day, would you have hope? (see Jb 1:19) If you went bankrupt on the same day, would you let God give you the virtue of hope? (see Jb 1:14ff) If you were diseased and racked with pain, would you be hopeful? (see Jb 2:7) Some would be like Job’s wife and advise you to “curse God and die” (Jb 2:9). However, Job, with no help from his wife and his friends, had hope.

“Hoping against hope” (see Rm 4:18), Job had ten more children (Jb 42:13). His three daughters were the most beautiful women in all the land (Jb 42:15). Moreover, God made him twice as rich as before (Jb 42:10). “Hope will not leave us disappointed” (Rm 5:5).

What about the many people who hope in the Lord but die without the blessings given to Job in his later days? Did these people hope in vain? No! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25). Death does not dash our hopes; instead, it leads to the fulfillment of every hope for those who have hoped in Christ. “They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint” (Is 40:31).

Prayer: Father, give me hope, especially in the midst of the worst circumstances in my life.

Promise: "Blest are the eyes that see what you see. I tell you, many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." —Lk 10:23-24

Praise: Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos was a humble Redemptorist priest in New Orleans in the mid 1800s. Numerous miracles of healing are attributed to his intercession, including healing of paralysis and leukemia.
