PURE SUFFERING
“I have come to light a fire on the earth.” —Luke 12:49

When we use the word “fire,” we think of light, warmth, or even of being “fired-up,” that is, enthusiastic. However, when the Bible speaks of fire, it usually means sufferings resulting in purification (see 1 Pt 1:7). So when Jesus said He came to light a fire on the earth, He was indicating His desire to suffer so as to purify the whole world. He did this by receiving a baptism (Lk 12:50), an immersion in the fires of Calvary’s purifying sufferings.

Although Jesus on Calvary has already received the baptism in fire to purify the whole world, He wants us to share in His sufferings of purification (Col 1:24). He wants us also to be baptized in fire and in the Spirit (Lk 3:16). When we receive the Holy Spirit, this will cause us to suffer rejection, pain, and persecution, even from our family members (see Lk 12:52). These sufferings are part of Christ’s purifying fire. Pray: “Holy Spirit, come with Your fire, purify our hearts.”

Prayer: Father, like Jesus, may I learn obedience and be perfected by what I suffer (Heb 5:8-9).

Promise: “I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name.” —Eph 3:14-15

Praise: Samantha experienced a deep conversion to the Lord Jesus on the day Pope St. John Paul II passed away. She didn’t realize this until she made a pilgrimage to the Pope’s birthplace in Poland twenty years later.

LIVING ON THE EDGE
“Be on guard, therefore. The Son of Man will come when you least expect Him.” —Luke 12:40

We should live each day as if it were our last and as if it were the last day for the world. Today and each day should be “dress rehearsals” for the Second Coming of Christ.

We have reason to believe that we will be ready for Christ’s Second Coming if today we are managing with faith and wisdom all the resources, time, charisms, talents, and opportunities the Lord has given us (see Lk 12:42). If we are spending today feeding people physically and spiritually (Lk 12:42), we are getting ready for Christ’s coming. If we are no longer living for ourselves (2 Cor 5:15) but see ourselves as Christ’s slaves (Lk 12:43 in the Greek), we are ready to cry out “Maranatha!” until Jesus comes again (see Rv 22:20).

However, if we spend some of this day hurting others in our anger, bitterness, or unforgiveness (Lk 12:45), we are not ready for Christ’s coming, or our own death, or the trials and opportunities of this day. Also, if we live this day to maximize our pleasures (see Lk 12:45), we are not ready to live forever or even for today.

If we are ready for Christ’s Second Coming, we are ready for anything, even for today. Live on the edge — the edge of this world and this life.

Prayer: Father, help me hasten the time of Christ’s return (2 Pt 3:12).

Promise: “When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted.” —Lk 12:48

Praise: Jana experienced a heart-wrenching division in her extended family until God healed and reunited them all in His love.

THE SIGN OF PEACE - One Bread, One Body, 10/20/2026

THE SIGN OF PEACE
“I will hear what God proclaims; the Lord — for He proclaims peace.” —Psalm 85:9

Christ “is our Peace” (Eph 2:14). Christ made “peace, reconciling both of us to God in one body through His cross, which put that enmity to death. He came and ‘announced the good news of peace’ ” (Eph 2:15-17). Christ is Peace, makes peace, and announces peace. By “peace,” the Lord, being Jewish, means “shalom,” that is, harmony and God’s order in our lives and in the world. In Christ and in shalom, our lives are integrated rather than fragmented, full rather than deprived, and whole rather than broken. Shortly before His death, Jesus announced His last will and testament. In the will, He left His shalom-peace to His disciples (Jn 14:27).

Are you receiving your inheritance of shalom? Are you living fully for Jesus? Are you living your Baptism? Is the harmonious order of your life truly a masterpiece of God’s grace? Is your life an example of God’s shalom-peace, which is beyond our human understanding? (Phil 4:7) Is your life something beautiful by and for God? Let us give each other the sign of shalom-peace.

Prayer: Father, make me a peacemaker (Mt 5:9) even if I have to suffer and die as Jesus did.

Promise: It will go well with those servants whom the Master finds wide-awake on His return. I tell you, He will put on an apron, seat them at table, and proceed to wait on them.” —Lk 12:37

Praise: St. Paul of the Cross loved Christ crucified and led many others to be devoted to that love (1 Cor 2:2).

(Married couples, take some time to renew your commitment to each other and the Lord at our Nov. 13-14 retreat. Call 513-373-2397 or see www.presentationministries.com.)

SAVINGS ACCOUNT - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2026

SAVINGS ACCOUNT
“Then I will say to myself: You have blessings in reserve for years to come. Relax! Eat heartily, drink well. Enjoy yourself. But God said to him, ‘You fool!’ ” —Luke 12:19-20

Jesus said: “Avoid greed in all its forms” (Lk 12:15). Then Jesus called a man a “fool” because he was storing up his harvest to provide a “reserve for years to come” (see Lk 12:17-20).

It seems Jesus is opposed to savings and considers it a form of greed. This comes as a shock to us who were brought up with the idea that saving our money was a good thing to do. Yet savings accounts, pensions, retirement funds, and even social security are more cultural than Christian.

In the Old Testament, Joseph saved for the seven-year famine (Gn 41:35-36), and we are told to imitate the ants who save up for winter (Prv 6:6-8). However, savings is not the main point of these passages, and they are superseded and fulfilled by the New Testament. If we are to obey God’s Word, it seems we must free up substantial amounts of money to feed the starving who won’t live till tomorrow if we don’t help them today.

Prayer: Father, may I believe that You are a real Father Who will provide my bread on a daily basis (Mt 6:11).

Promise: “We are truly His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to lead the life of good deeds which God prepared for us in advance.” —Eph 2:10

Praise: Sts. Gabriel Lalement and John de Brébeuf prayed for the souls of their tormentors, the Iroquois Indians. In imitation of Jesus, they laid down their lives to minister to the hostile Iroquois, who eventually killed them on March 17, 1649.

“GIVE TO GOD” (Mt 22:21)
“Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, but give to God what is God’s.” —Matthew 22:21

Jesus answered the Pharisees’ question by advising them to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, for Caesar’s image was stamped on the coin (Mt 22:21). Yet Jesus is ever the Teacher, and He took the opportunity to teach them to give to God what belongs to God. Each person is made in the image of God (Gn 1:27); His image is stamped on us. We belong to God (Rm 14:7-8) and our lives are His. We therefore must give to God what belongs to Him — our heart, soul, strength, and mind (Lk 10:27).

God expects us to return not just what belongs to Him, but also the fruit that our efforts have produced (Mt 25:14-30). The person who buried his one talent in the ground simply gave that talent back to God, but with no fruit (Mt 25:24-27), and this was not pleasing to the Lord. We are called to give the Lord our very life, all the fruit we produce, our dearest love, our thoughts, hopes, miseries, past, present, and future.

“God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:7). By giving God everything, we might consider ourselves exceedingly generous. However, we are merely giving God what rightfully belongs to Him. He has given us everything in the person of His only begotten Son (see Jn 3:16). Let us imitate God and thankfully give Him our all in return.

Prayer: Father, I trust in You; I am Yours. I will hold nothing back from You.

Promise: “I am the Lord and there is no other, there is no God besides Me.” —Is 45:5

Praise: “Give to the Lord glory and praise; give to the Lord the glory due His name!” (Ps 96:7-8)

IMAGING RESONANCE? - One Bread, One Body, 10/17/2026

IMAGING RESONANCE?
“May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, grant you a spirit of wisdom and insight to know Him clearly. May He enlighten your innermost vision.” —Ephesians 1:17-18

We have eyes on the outside of our bodies by which we can see images. We also have “the eyes of [our] hearts” (Eph 1:18, RSV-CE) inside our bodies by which we can make images. This “innermost vision” (Eph 1:18) is something like our imaginations. All human beings automatically make images, that is, mental pictures, of everything, including God, ourselves, and others. These pictures are usually distorted and warp our view of life and, therefore, our living of life. Hence, we need our “innermost vision,” our image-making power, to be enlightened (Eph 1:18).

There are three keys to making true images:

1) knowing our “great hope” (Eph 1:18). Very hopeful people make images and paint pictures quite differently than those with little hope for the future.

2) knowing our inherited wealth (Eph 1:18). Jesus provides numerous images of such wealth in His teaching (see e.g. Mt 6:19-21; 25:14ff; Lk 12:16-21).

3) knowing “the immeasurable scope of His power in us who believe” (Eph 1:19). Those who know how awesome their power is in Christ make images accordingly.

May we truly image Jesus, ourselves in Jesus, and our lives in Him.

Prayer: Father, You have created us in Your divine image (Gn 1:27). May we see ourselves as icons of Your love.

Promise: “The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said.” —Lk 12:12

Praise: St. Ignatius wrote before his martyrdom: “I prefer death in Christ to power over the farthest limits of the earth.”

A STILL, SMALL WHISPER (see 1 Kgs 19:12)
“Everything you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight; what you have whispered in locked rooms will be proclaimed from the rooftops.” —Luke 12:3

Who else but God could hear what is whispered in locked rooms? (see Rm 2:16) Would God proclaim your secret whisperings from the rooftops and use your secrets against you? “From heaven the Lord looks down” (Ps 33:13), not to spy on your secrets, but to love you intimately. God is not only interested in you on Sunday for an hour; He’s interested in everything about you, even the smallest thing you do or think. He cares about the smallest sparrow, and you are worth more to God than many sparrows (Lk 12:6-7). The Lord is with you and within you (Jn 6:56; 17:23).

Therefore, give God all of your life — all your heart, soul,  strength, and mind (Lk 10:27). Give Him your weaknesses and strengths, your failings, whisperings, frustrations, and anxieties. Don’t be afraid that God is spying on you to expose you; that’s what Satan does, not God. The Lord is compassionate and merciful (see Ps 103:8). He wants to transform you in Christ (Rm 12:2) and make you perfectly whole.

God knows your most intimate secrets and whispers (see Jn 1:48-51), but His plan is to use that knowledge to transform you, not to shame and expose you. His plan is to whisper His love into your ears (1 Kgs 19:12). Ultimately, you might be the one doing the proclaiming from the housetops as you share your testimony to the tender mercy of God in your life (Lk 12:3).

Prayer: Father, draw me ever deeper into the center of Your heart.

Promise: The Holy Spirit “is the Pledge of our inheritance, the first payment against the full redemption of a people God has made His own, to praise His glory.” —Eph 1:14

Praise: St. Margaret Mary said, “I need nothing but God, and to lose myself in the heart of Jesus.”

MY FATHER’S SON
“You build the tombs of the prophets, but it was your fathers who murdered them.” —Luke 11:47

The Pharisees, the “religious elite” of Jesus’ day, used to moan: “Had we lived in our forefathers’ time we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood” (Mt 23:30). This claim of theirs got under Jesus’ skin, and He said in response, “Thus you show that you are the sons of the prophets’ murderers. Now it is your turn: fill up the vessel measured out by your forefathers” (Mt 23:31-32). They criticized the sins of their fathers, while committing the same sins themselves.

The nails were driven into Jesus’ hands and feet for all people, yet we continue our sinful prejudice (see Rm 5:8). We say we wonder how anyone or any group could commit such atrocities as Hitler and the Nazis did. Meanwhile, Jesus wonders how we can stand by idly while millions upon millions of children are cut to pieces inside the womb. Sins such as pornography, racism, human trafficking, corporate and personal greed, and genocide continue in the present day.

Let’s stop filling up the vessels measured out by our forefathers (Mt 23:32). The Lord calls us to repent, be forgiven, be holy in His sight, and full of love (Eph 1:4, 7).

Prayer: Jesus, deliver me from the futile way of life my fathers handed on to me (1 Pt 1:18).

Promise: “It is in Christ and through His blood that we have been redeemed and our sins forgiven, so immeasurably generous is God’s favor to us.” —Eph 1:7-8

Praise: St. Teresa of Avila, also known as St. Teresa of Jesus, had a great trust in God. Her common sense and her great capacity for work enabled her to bear plentiful, lasting fruit to build up the Church.

FRUIT STAND
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity.” —Galatians 5:22-23

Fruit is the end product of a process. Fruit does not just happen; it is produced. The Spirit produces His fruit in us when we live in Jesus, the true Vine (Jn 15:5). Likewise, the discipline of the Lord produces the Spirit’s “fruit of peace and justice” (Heb 12:11). Thirdly, sorrow for our sins produces the fruit of the Spirit (see 2 Cor 7:11). Also, the gifts of the Spirit produce the fruit of the Spirit. For example, kindly deeds are the fruits of the Spirit’s gift of wisdom (Jas 3:17).

Many Christians seem to be waiting around for the fruit of the Spirit to “magically” appear. Fruit isn’t like that. All farmers know that, although ultimately the harvest depends on God, they must do several things to make it possible for fruit to be produced. This is also true of the fruit of the Spirit. To make possible the Spirit’s fruit, we must cling to Jesus, accept the Lord’s discipline, be sorry for our sins (see Rv 3:19), and use the Spirit’s gifts.

Prayer: Father, may I be fruitful (see Gn 1:28).

Promise: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s lead.” —Gal 5:25

Praise: Pope St. Callistus I was born a slave, became a prisoner, then a priest, a pope, and eventually gave his life for the Christian faith.

INSIDE JOBS
“You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but within you are filled with rapaciousness and evil. Fools! Did not He Who made the outside make the inside too?” —Luke 11:39-40

We all devote a great deal of money, time, and energy to our outward appearance. We dress and comb our hair to look good. We clean our teeth, ears, fingernails, toes, etc. Many people eat, drink, and exercise so that their bodies will be attractive. We buy furniture to give ourselves the most comfortable posture, and adjust the heating and air conditioning for the most comfortable temperature. We make sure that our outsides are well provided for.

However, our insides are another story. How many starve their souls by indulging in selfish desires? (see 1 Pt 2:11; see also Prv 13:19) How many fail to guard their senses and carelessly pump tons of garbage into their spirits until their hearts are bloated? (see Lk 21:34; cf Is 33:15) But no matter what we have done to our insides, “all will be wiped clean,” if we but obey the Lord in almsgiving, prayer, and fasting (Lk 11:41).

The Lord has made us new inside through Baptism (Rm 6:4). If we have defiled ourselves through sin, we can be washed clean by the blood of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We can even be filled with life and love by receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus in Holy Communion. Do your inside jobs.

Prayer: Father, direct my thoughts “to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, admirable, decent, virtuous, or worthy of praise” (Phil 4:8).

Promise: “It is in the Spirit that we eagerly await the justification we hope for, and only faith can yield it.” —Gal 5:5

Praise: After submitting to the spiritual leadership of her husband, Marcia experienced a new sense of order and a deep peace.

STOP MISTREATING GOD
“This is an evil age.” —Luke 11:29

The crowds had the privilege of seeing Jesus standing right in front of them and speaking to them (Lk 11:29). Yet they sought a sign from Him rather than seeking Him, Who was the Sign (Lk 11:29-30). Because of our fallen human nature, human beings tend to ignore Jesus or even forget Him after having met Him (e.g. Gal 3:1). How can we ignore, forget, and reject the One Who loves us so much that He died on the cross for each one of us? (Gal 2:20) How can we mistreat God by “crucifying the Son of God...and holding Him up to contempt”? (Heb 6:6)

Our egomania, addiction to self, and narcissism blind us to everything, including God, our rejection of Him, and our hardened hearts. How can we stop ignoring, forgetting, rejecting, and crucifying God, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16) and has died to save us?

The Lord breaks through this heart of darkness in many ways, especially through the Blessed Virgin Mary. For example, while He was hanging on the cross in the hour of terrifying rejection, Jesus turned to Mary and commissioned her to be a mother to His disciples (Jn 19:26) so that we would no longer abandon Him and would instead lead all people to love Him faithfully.

Stop mistreating Jesus. Mary will help “her offspring...who keep God’s commandments and give witness to Jesus” (Rv 12:17).

Prayer: Father, I know how much it hurts to be rejected. May I never again reject You, Jesus, and the Spirit.

Promise: “It was for liberty that Christ freed us.” —Gal 5:1

Praise: Steven, at first, was unable to share his faith with strangers, but found he was able to do all things with God (see Mt 19:26).

A MASS ROUNDUP
“Come to the feast.” —Matthew 22:4

The King issues an invitation to come to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the feast of the wedding of the Son to His bride, the Church (Rv 19:7, 9). It’s quite a party: Bread from Heaven (Jn 6:32-33), an extraordinary, overflowing banquet (Is 25:6; Ps 23:5), the fullness of heavenly joy experienced right here on the face of this planet. What an invitation! Who could turn that down?

Sadly, many “ignored the invitation” (Mt 22:5). The reasons are numerous: football, grillouts, tailgate parties, work responsibilities, pleasure-seeking, hard-heartedness, and outright contempt for the King and His Son. “They refused to come” (Mt 22:3). They refused to celebrate and rejoice. The King commented that they “were unfit to come” (Mt 22:8).

Many registered Catholics will not go to Holy Mass today. God says: “I want My house to be full” (Lk 14:23). Surely there are many people who need help in accepting God’s most gracious invitation (Mt 22:9). Be among the servants of the King who go “out into the byroads and invite to” Mass those people who are famished for the banquet of the lavish love of the Lord (Mt 22:9).

Prayer: Father, grant me the grace to be completely attached to You and totally detached from anything which would separate me from You.

Promise: “In Him Who is the Source of my strength I have strength for everything.” —Phil 4:13

Praise: “Behold our God, to Whom we looked to save us! This is the Lord for Whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that He has saved us!” (Is 25:9)

FREEDOM IN THE WORD
“Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it.” —Luke 11:28

Many believe happiness, or blessedness, consists in being free, in not being constrained and restrained. Many regard the Old Testament as a “disciplinarian,” a “monitor” (Gal 3:24, RNAB), something that constrains us from being “free” (Gal 3:22). They see the Bible as a set of rules that keeps us “locked in” rather than being free (Gal 3:23).

Do you feel God’s Word aims to prevent your happiness? Jesus, the Word of God (Jn 1:1), is not a disciplinarian, monitor, or restrainer. He knows us by name (Jn 10:3). The Word is not an impersonal guardian keeping us in jail, preventing us from escaping to freedom. Rather, Jesus, the Word, the Good Shepherd, protects us from the dangers outside the sheepfold, keeping them from harming us. Our parents restrained us from playing in traffic, touching hot stoves, drowning in the bathtub, etc. Likewise, God’s Word keeps us safe, blessed, happy in the sheepfold, under the protection of the Good Shepherd.

As a loving parent, God the Father has given us His Word, both the written page and His Son Jesus, the Divine Logos. God’s Word gives us safe boundaries; thus, we are happy if we observe it (Lk 11:28). If we do not hear the Word nor observe it, we aren’t free; rather, we are unprotected. We are on our own, unaware that our “opponent the devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Pt 5:8).

Life in the Word is true freedom, true blessing, true happiness. Hear the Word. Observe it. Live it. Be set free (Jn 8:31-32, 36).

Prayer: Father, every day of the rest of my life, I will read Your Word and make it my home (Jn 8:31).

Promise: “Each one of you is a [child] of God because of your faith in Christ Jesus.” —Gal 3:26

Praise: “Sing to Him, sing His praise, proclaim all His wondrous deeds. Glory in His holy name” (Ps 105:2-3).

KNOWING THE ENEMY - One Bread, One Body, 10/09/2026

KNOWING THE ENEMY
“Jesus was casting out a devil which was mute, and when the devil was cast out the dumb man spoke. The crowds were amazed at this. Some of them said, ‘It is by Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that He casts out devils.’ ” —Luke 11:14-15

When Jesus drove out demons, some people reacted negatively. This still happens today. Jesus continues to drive out demons, and some respond by denying the devil’s existence or at least the need for deliverance.

Even if we accept the Biblical and orthodox teaching about the devil, we may still be affected or “infected” by secular ideas. We may not take the devil seriously enough, thinking of him as only an evil force. However, he is a real enemy with great intelligence and personal attributes.

To win our battle against the devil (Eph 6:12), we must have a realistic view of him. We should not be terrified of the evil one, for in Jesus’ name, we can renounce the devil from our own lives. Yet we must recognize the devil as a formidable opponent, “a strong man fully armed,” who must be disarmed and despoiled (Lk 11:21, 22).

“Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1, NAB), but don’t fail to notice the serpent at your feet.

Prayer: Father, give me a realistic assessment of my enemy, Satan.

Promise: “Those who believe are sons of Abraham.” —Gal 3:7

Praise: St. Denis, bishop of Paris, France, led many to faith in Christ. In return, he was beheaded as a martyr for Jesus.

THE PRIVILEGED POWER OF PRAYER
“So I say to you, ‘Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.’ For whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted.” —Luke 11:9-10

Through persistence, we can get others to give us something even when they don’t want to give (Lk 11:8). How much more will we receive from God our Father, Who loved us so much that He gave us His Son! (Jn 3:16) “Is it possible that He Who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for the sake of us all will not grant us all things besides?” (Rm 8:32)

Almost all children receive good things from their parents, despite the parents’ sins (see Lk 11:11-13). “How much more will your heavenly Father give good things to anyone who asks Him!” (Mt 7:11) In fact, our heavenly Abba will give us not only good things but even the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity, God Himself (Lk 11:13). The Spirit will help us pray (Rm 8:26-27), give us supernatural gifts (1 Cor 12:4ff), guide us to all truth (Jn 16:13), make us holy (see Gal 5:22-23), and renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).

Because of our Father Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16), Jesus’ crucifixion, and the power of the Holy Spirit, it is absolutely certain that all our prayers will be answered — either as expected or in a better way. Therefore, there is “the necessity of praying always and not losing heart” (Lk 18:1).

Prayer: Father, fill me with joyful, expectant faith when I pray.

Promise: “God lavishes the Spirit on you and works wonders in your midst.” —Gal 3:5

Praise: Warren, a former Protestant minister, and Nora, his wife, left their congregation and converted to the Catholic faith, receiving their First Communion together just before Christ’s Christmas coming.

PRAYER LINES
“Lord, teach us to pray.” —Luke 11:1

The Lord, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16), commands us to love Him with all our hearts (Lk 10:27). However, we will do this only if we love our neighbors as ourselves (Lk 10:27). Love is not a matter of mere feelings and words. We must “love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it” (1 Jn 3:18). We must be like the Good Samaritan and give hands-on, sacrificial service to those in need, even if they are enemies (Lk 10:33ff). We must be like St. Martha working hard to offer hospitality to Jesus (Lk 10:38ff) and the least of our brothers and sisters (Mt 25:40).

However, before, during, and after our work, we must be like St. Mary of Bethany and sit at the feet of Jesus to listen to His words (Lk 10:39). We need Jesus to teach us to pray (Lk 11:1), especially to pray first, to pray before work. Otherwise, our actions will speak no louder than our words, and our love will not be authentic. Learn to pray to work in love.

Prayer: Father, as I pray the rosary, purify my motives for working.

Promise: “The only stipulation was that we should be mindful of the poor — the one thing that I was making every effort to do.” —Gal 2:10

Praise: Sally’s first action on waking up is to pray the rosary.

THE THRILL OF EVANGELIZATION
“The time came when He Who had set me apart before I was born and called me by His favor chose to reveal His Son to me.” —Galatians 1:15-16

Some of those persecuting the Church will soon be preaching the faith they tried to destroy (see Gal 1:23). People mad at God and others for not helping them will accept God’s correction and make great acts of faith (cf Lk 10:40 and Jn 11:27). All around us, in quiet and dramatic ways, people are converting.

You can be part of this greatest of miracles, the miracle of salvation, by:

  • repenting of your sins, being baptized, and accepting Jesus as Lord (Acts 2:38),
  • praying and fasting fervently for persecutors and sinners,
  • being a witness for Jesus by sharing your faith, and
  • taking up your cross daily and suffering for love of Jesus (Lk 9:23).

Jesus continues to catch lots of fish — big fish (see Jn 21:11). To fish with Him and to be part of the life-changing excitement of His saving grace and love, we need only have faith and love enough to lower our nets for a catch (see Lk 5:4). Don’t miss out on life by missing out on conversion and evangelization. Share your faith.

Prayer: Father, fill me with joy over one repentant sinner (Lk 15:7, 10).

Promise: “Truly You have formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mother’s womb. I give You thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made.” —Ps 139:13-14

Praise: St. Bruno gave up the opportunity to live a highly visible life as an archbishop in order to pursue quiet, humble living in a hermitage.

THE MIRACLE OF BECOMING A NEIGHBOR
“Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor?” —Luke 10:36

A lawyer asked Jesus: “Who is my neighbor?” (Lk 10:29) Jesus assumed that everyone was our neighbor and answered another question: “How do I become a neighbor?” A neighbor takes responsibility for others, even for strangers. A neighbor is not apathetic. Being a neighbor is a grace, a miracle. We can’t do it by our own power.

There may not be as many neighbors around as we’ve thought. Even priests and religious people may not be neighbors (see Lk 10:31-32). On the other hand, unexpected people, like Samaritans or our enemies, may become neighbors. A neighbor helps other human beings just because they are human beings. We revere other people as persons not because of what they’ve done or how good they are but simply because they are persons (1 Pt 2:17).

A neighbor not only refers others to where they can receive more help, but also personally serves those in need. The Samaritan hoisted the beaten man “on his own beast and brought him to an inn, where he cared for him” (Lk 10:34). Therefore, being a neighbor is often dirty and expensive (Lk 10:34-35). “If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members share its joy” (1 Cor 12:26). This identification and solidarity expresses itself in compassion (Lk 10:37), that is, in “suffering with” the other person.

Prayer: Father, do the miracle of making me a neighbor.

Promise: “If I were trying to win man’s approval, I would surely not be serving Christ!” —Gal 1:10

Praise: In a private revelation, Jesus told St. Faustina: “It is your office and your assignment throughout your life to continue to make known to souls the great mercy I have for them and to exhort them to trust in My bottomless mercy” (Diary, 1567).

COLLECTION AGENCY
“He dispatched his slaves to the tenants to obtain his share of the grapes.” —Matthew 21:34

Some of us are collectors. We are the servants the Lord has sent out to collect His share of the produce (Mt 21:34). We might be ushers taking up the collection at Mass, or making phone calls and home visits on behalf of a parish ministry. We might recruit volunteers or work in an evangelization ministry. We might be “fishers of men” (Mt 4:19), collecting souls for the Lord.

Being a collector for the Lord is risky work. We are in danger of being attacked and disrespected (see Mt 21:35-36). Yet our Master was treated the same way (Mt 21:37-39). Will we pay no heed to the shame or the risk (Heb 12:2) when it’s time to collect for the Master? (see Mt 21:37-39) Or will we collect for ourselves, that is, pasture ourselves? (Ez 34:2)

Tax collectors such as St. Matthew understood this kind of collection. Matthew turned to Jesus and worked to collect many  souls for the Kingdom of God (Mt 9:9-10). Like Matthew, the Lord has called us to collect for the harvest, so He may have His share of it. Let us be faithful workers, always making sure the Lord’s harvest does not go uncollected.

Prayer: Father, You deserve the very best harvest. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon me so I might present You with a full share of the fruit You seek.

Promise: “Your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, admirable, decent, virtuous, or worthy of praise.” —Phil 4:8

Praise: “To the One seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, be praise and honor, glory and might, forever and ever!” (Rv 5:13)

REJOICE WITH THE LORD
“At that moment Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit.” —Luke 10:21

While I was writing this, I was at the University of Houston to talk at a nearby conference. I read Jesus’ words: “I watched Satan fall from the sky like lightning” (Lk 10:18). Then I looked out the window and saw flashes of lightning. (The Lord is very coordinated.) I rejoiced at this “God-incidence.” As I read on, Jesus reminded me to rejoice more heartily because my name is inscribed in heaven (Lk 10:20).

We must “rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil 4:4) and rejoice with the Lord always in the Holy Spirit that the Father has “revealed to the merest children” what He has “hidden from the learned and the clever” (Lk 10:21). We rejoice that the Father has revealed the Son to us, and the Son has revealed the Father “to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him” (Lk 10:22). Let us rejoice in and with the Lord because we are victorious in being saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8) in the Good News of Jesus revealed to us.

“Blest are the eyes that see what you see. I tell you, many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it” (Lk 10:23-24). Let us rejoice in knowing and loving Jesus, our Savior, Lord, and God.

Prayer: Father, give me Your heart, mind, desires, and joy (Jn 15:11).

Promise: “Thus the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones.” —Jb 42:12

Praise: Harry, a city fireman, joyfully attends daily Mass and then stops into the Adoration Chapel to kneel before the Blessed Sacrament for several minutes before heading to work.

WHAT IS MAN?
“See that you never despise one of these little ones. I assure you, their angels in heaven constantly behold My heavenly Father’s face.” —Matthew 18:10

The Lord has assigned angels to guard us in all our ways (Ps 91:11). They guard us against all kinds of dangers but especially against the attacks of demons. Why would mighty demons want to destroy little human beings? Because we are created in the image and likeness of God and are loved by God (Gn 1:27), Satan attacks us in order to express hatred for God and to blaspheme Him. Thus, our need for guardian angels implies that we are God-like and attacking with God’s power the works of the evil one.

After Pentecost, we hear much more in the Bible about angels. The human race, which was already loved and empowered by God, could now receive the Holy Spirit, “Power from on high” (Lk 24:49; see also Acts 1:8). Through Baptism, now that we are new creations in Christ and clothed with God’s power, we are a much greater threat to Satan and his kingdom of darkness. Satan has even more reason to attack us in his perverse self-defense. Thus, Satan “is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Pt 5:8).

The reality of guardian angels reveals to us not only God’s greatness but also the glory and power of the human person: created, loved, empowered, redeemed, and transformed by Jesus our Lord. What is man that God is mindful of him (see Ps 8:5) and has given us such an amazing life that we would need guardian angels?

Prayer: Father, may I realize the mammoth significance of being loved by You.

Promise: “Truly You have formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mother’s womb.” —Ps 139:13

Praise: Six-year-old Ellen darted out into a busy street in front of an onrushing car. The driver swerved quickly and her older sister pulled her back, but her parents knew that her guardian angel saved her from certain death.
