"IN GOD WE TRUST"

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. He is
like a tree planted beside the waters." —Jeremiah 17:7-8

Happiness is not trusting in human beings, even in ourselves, but trusting
in the Lord (Jer 17:5, 7). Trusting in the Lord is not just a state of
mind but is expressed in very practical decisions. For example, trusting
in the Lord can mean choosing poverty, persecution (Lk 6:20, 22), and a
radically different lifestyle of simplicity and self-sacrifice rather than
of pleasure-seeking and selfishness.

Trusting in the Lord is the only reasonable thing to do but is beyond
human reason. We are commanded in God's word: "Trust in the Lord with all
your heart, on your own intelligence rely not; in all your ways be mindful
of Him" (Prv 3:5-6). Trusting in the Lord means trusting in the Lord alone
and trusting in Him at all times (Ps 62:6-9). If we don't trust Him
always, we don't trust Him as He wants to be trusted.

Trusting in the Lord is a way of life or it is nothing. Jesus said: "Fear
is useless; what is needed is trust" (Lk 8:50). "Commit to the Lord your
way; trust in Him, and He will act. He will make justice dawn for you like
the light; bright as the noonday shall be your vindication" (Ps 37:5-7).

Prayer: Jesus, I put my trust in You.

Promise: "Christ is now raised from the dead, the first fruits of those
who have fallen asleep." —1 Cor 15:20

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who trusted in God the Father through His
crucifixion to His resurrection. Alleluia!

(Put your trust in the Lord! Come to a Presentation Ministries retreat and

WORD-HUNGER - One Bread, One Body, 2/13/2010

Saturday, February 13, 2010

1 Kings 12:26-32; 13:33-34, Psalm 106:6-7, 19-22, Mark 8:1-10

WORD-HUNGER

A "large crowd assembled, and they were without anything to eat." —Mark
8:1

The crowd following Jesus had nothing to eat. Moreover, some of them had
"come a great distance" to hear His words (Mk 8:3). Unless Jesus had
miraculously fed the people, some of them would have literally collapsed
(Mk 8:3).

How hungry are you for God's word? Would you come a great distance to hear
the word? Are you so intent on hearing God's word that you would put
yourself in a position where you couldn't get any food? Would you
sacrifice to the point of physically collapsing to receive the spiritual
nourishment of God's word?

The psalmist proclaimed: "How sweet to my palate are Your promises,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Ps 119:103) Jeremiah said: "When I found
Your words, I devoured them; they became my joy and the happiness of my
heart" (Jer 15:16). "Be as eager for milk as newborn babies — pure milk of
the Spirit to make you grow unto salvation, now that you have tasted that
the Lord is good" (1 Pt 2:2-3, see also Heb 6:5). Hunger for God's word.

Prayer: Father, may I eat more spiritually than I do physically.

Promise: "Those who had eaten numbered about four thousand." —Mk 8:9

Praise: Praise: Hungering for a word from God, Amelia drove some distance
to attend worship services.

PIECE-MEAL - One Bread, One Body, 2/12/2010

Friday, February 12, 2010

PIECE-MEAL

"Ahijah took off his new cloak, tore it into twelve pieces..." —1 Kings
11:30

Solomon's empire was literally "breathtaking" (see 1 Kgs 10:5). The
magnificent Temple he built was one of the wonders of the world. His
kingdom was so formidable that for years he never even had to fight a war.
"King Solomon surpassed in riches and wisdom all the kings of the earth"
(1 Kgs 10:23). The Bible views Solomon's reign as the high point of Jewish
political and economic history.

Yet, Ahijah the prophet graphically proclaimed that Solomon's seemingly
invincible kingdom would be torn to pieces. Ahijah ripped his new coat
into pieces to signify what would happen to Solomon's empire. Ahijah's
surprising prophecy soon proved true when civil war divided the country
after Solomon's death.

The message is that the most established, endowed, seemingly impregnable,
and developed organizations and systems will quickly collapse if the
hearts of people are not entirely with the Lord (1 Kgs 11:4). Sin has a
terrifying power to quickly destroy even the most developed governments,
churches, ministries, families, and marriages. Therefore, we must repent
and love Jesus with all our hearts, or we will see our lives and society
torn to pieces. Repent!

Prayer: Father, put my life back together according to Your designs.

Promise: "He has done everything well! He makes the deaf hear and the mute
speak!" —Mk 7:37

Praise: Elizabeth prays daily for civil leaders to have the mind of God.

Renewal" on audio AV 70-1 or video V-70.)

WANT OR WANTON? - One Bread, One Body, 2/11/2010

Thursday, February 11, 2010, Our Lady of Lourdes

1 Kings 11:4-13, Psalm 106:3-4, 35-37, 40, Mark 7:24-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/021110.shtml

WANT OR WANTON?

"The Lord said to Solomon: 'Since this is what you want...' " —1 Kings
11:11

Solomon made a great start in following the Lord. In his youth, God
presented Solomon with the chance to have anything he wanted (1 Kgs
3:5ff). Solomon chose wisdom, so as to rule God's people with
understanding and justice. God was pleased with Solomon's choice (1 Kgs
3:10).

Later in life, however, Solomon used his God-given power to indulge his
own wanton desires rather than fulfilling God's desires. He fell so far
into lust and idolatry that his heart turned away from the Lord. Solomon
didn't want God anymore, and he therefore deprived himself of the kingdom
(see 1 Kgs 11:11).

One day of unfaithfulness and wantonness leads to the next day of sin.
After a while, Solomon's heart was far from the Lord. Unfaithfulness was
what Solomon wanted (1 Kgs 11:11), and the bitter consequences of
unfaithfulness are what he got (see Rm 6:23).

Faithfulness to God consists in daily seeking God, His way of
righteousness, and His kingship over us (see Mt 6:33). Every day we
Christians must pick up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Jesus (Lk
9:23). If we want God, we can find Him (Jer 29:13-14). He is always
seeking us and waiting for us to want Him.

Discipleship is all in the wanting. What do you want?

Prayer: Father, let me be faithful to Your teaching, and never let me be
parted from You.

Promise: "Happy are they who observe what is right, who do always what is
just." —Ps 106:3

Praise: Pete keeps a bottle of Lourdes water on his office desk. God has
used it on several occasions as a springboard to evangelization and
healing.

WISE MEN AND WOMEN STILL SEEK HIM - One Bread, One Body, 2/10/2010

Wednesday, February 10, 2010, St. Scholastica

WISE MEN AND WOMEN STILL SEEK HIM

"The queen of Sheba, having heard of Solomon's fame, came...She arrived in
Jerusalem." —1 Kings 10:1, 2

Jesus testified that the queen of Sheba, that is, "the queen of the
South," "came from the farthest corner of the earth to listen to the
wisdom of Solomon" (Mt 12:42). She had a strong desire to listen to the
wisdom of Israel as spoken through Solomon (2 Chr 9:1-2). She willingly
suffered the rigors, hardships, and expenses of long-distance travel in
the arid, ancient world to find this wisdom (1 Kgs 10:1ff). Jesus approved
of her quest, and inferred that she "will rise at the judgment" and find
eternal life (Lk 11:31). Isaiah prophesied that "all from Sheba shall come
bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord"
(Is 60:6). In the spirit of their queen, the people of Sheba travel a long
way to seek God's wisdom and bring Him gifts.

Another group of travelers from the East later sought the Lord and His
wisdom, and brought gifts of gold and frankincense (Mt 2:11). They also
sought the Lord in the spirit of the queen of Sheba. They are known even
today as "wise men." Their true wisdom comes not from their IQs, but
because they were wise enough to seek God, no matter how difficult the
journey.

The above pilgrims spared no pains to seek God and His wisdom. They found
what they were seeking (see Mt 7:7). By comparison, how much do we want
God's wisdom? To seek God's wisdom today, we need only sit at home and
read our Bibles or hop in our cars and go to Mass. Will we pay the price
to seek God as they did? As Jesus commented, these travelers will rise at
the judgment along with us. With Jesus, they will judge others (see Lk
11:31-32). How will they judge us?

Prayer: Father, may I spend everything to get wisdom (Prv

Promise: 4:7). "Commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will
act." —Ps 37:5

Praise: St. Scholastica sought a closer relationship with her Bridegroom
through the religious community she founded.

HAVE A HEART - One Bread, One Body, 2/9/2010

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

HAVE A HEART

"Their heart is far from Me." —Mark 7:6

Have you ever been in love with someone who couldn't care less about you?
You try to be nice to them, and if they do notice you, it's only for the
purpose of getting something from you. Jesus unconditionally loves all of
humanity, and this is how He is too often treated in return. So many turn
to Jesus to meet a need, but their hearts are far from Him (Mk 7:6).

The Lord truly desires to provide our needs (see Phil 4:19; Mt 6:30;
7:9-11). Yet, He desires to provide for us in the context of a mutually
loving relationship, rather than being treated as little more than an ATM
machine.

The psalmist in today's responsorial psalm combats this selfish attitude.
He would rather live in poverty on the doorstep of God's house than live
in comfort without Him (Ps 84:11). How much joy that kind of love must
give to the Lord!

It's all in the heart. "Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will
be" (Lk 12:34). Is your heart set upon meeting your needs or on meeting
the Lord of your needs? Ask Jesus to "give you a new heart" (Ez 36:26),
and let your heart dwell in the center of His heart. May your love of
Jesus bring joy to His heart.

Prayer: Jesus, pour out Your love in my heart (Rm 5:5). "Sacred Heart of
Jesus, make my heart like unto Thine."

Promise: "Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or
on earth below; You keep Your covenant of kindness with Your servants." —1
Kgs 8:23

Praise: When failing to love another as Jesus commanded, Rhonda simply
asks the Lord for His heart and is renewed in love.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.) (We offer
a retreat entitled "Who am I in Christ?" Feb 26-27. Identity is a first
step in the Christian life. Our relationship with God comes first. We must
know "who" we are before we know "what" to do, "when" to do it, "where" to
go, and "how" it's done. Call 937-587-5464 to register.)
