ARE YOU LOVING?

"The commandment we have from Him is this: whoever loves God must also love his brother." -1 John 4:21

Most people like to think of themselves as loving others. However, are we truly loving or just deceiving ourselves? We are truly loving if:
* We are "beloved," if we have first received God's love (1 Jn 4:19).
* We love God with all our heart (1 Jn 5:2; Mt 22:37).
* We obey God's commandments (1 Jn 5:3).
* We love ourselves (Mt 22:39).
* We love the brothers and sisters we see in our everyday life (1 Jn 4:20).
* We love our enemies (Mt 5:44).
* The Spirit has poured out love in our hearts (Rm 5:5).

When we see what it means to be loving, we realize that not so many people are loving. Loving is not something we can do by our own power. We can't "make love." Loving is a gift, freely given by God to those willing to receive it. Open your best Christmas gift, the gift of love, the gift of God, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:16).

Prayer: Father, beginning this Christmas season, may I love those I have never loved before.

Promise: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me. He has sent Me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives." -Lk 4:18

Praise: Bl. Andre entrusted to St. Joseph the prayers of those who came to him, and was not disappointed.

THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT OF LOVE

"Beloved, if God has loved us so, we must have the same love for one another." -1 John 4:11

St. John Neumann, at the age of forty-one, reflected God's love for others (1 Jn 4:11) and took to heart the Lord's command to go and teach all nations (see Mk 16:15). He traveled from Bohemia to America as a missionary and was appointed bishop of Philadelphia. He reorganized the existing parochial school system into a diocesan one, and the number of pupils increased by almost twentyfold shortly thereafter. St. John Neumann could testify that God's love is brought to perfection in us (1 Jn 4:12) when we give our "all" to bring His Kingdom to a disordered world.

When we, out of love, give all that we have (Lk 21:4) to obtain Jesus our Treasure (Mt 13:44), we will receive the resources, both physical and spiritual, to accomplish Christ's objectives (see e.g. Eph 1:3; Phil 4:19).

When we have our lives in right and godly order, when we receive and obey our instructions from Christ, Jesus multiplies our faith (see Mt 25:29). Then He multiplies our works done in obedience and love. As He has told us, whoever "has faith in Me will do the works I do, and greater far than these" (Jn 14:12).

Therefore, love one another as God has commanded (1 Jn 4:11). Lovingly give Jesus your all. "Serve the needs of all" (Mk 10:44) and see Jesus multiply your deeds of love.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to die to my selfish agenda and work for You alone.

Promise: "If we love one another God dwells in us, and His love is brought to perfection in us." -1 Jn 4:12

Praise: St. John introduced the Forty Hours devotion to the U.S.

THE TIME OF MY LIFE

"Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus raised His eyes to heaven, pronounced a blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to distribute." -Mark 6:41

Jesus can multiply five loaves and two fish to feed thousands. He can also take one day and make it worth a thousand years (2 Pt 3:8). Jesus wants to give you a Christmas present of multiplying time. Evangelizing the more than six billion people on this earth will take many years, even with modern transportation and communications. Ask Jesus to multiply our time and do the job in the year 2011.

Restoring family life will take generations. Ask Jesus for a multiplication-miracle of family restoration in a few short months.

Renewing the local church has historically taken most of a century. Ask Jesus that it be miraculously done in our times.

In America, we don't need food multiplied as much as time. Ask Jesus to multiply "Christmas time" to evangelize, restore, renew, and feed the world.

Prayer: Jesus, may I let You love and surprise me this Christmas.

Promise: "Love, then, consists in this: not that we have loved God but that He has loved us and has sent His Son as an Offering for our sins." -1 Jn 4:10

Praise: St. Elizabeth raised her own five children and then dedicated the remainder of her life to the rest of God's children.

(Ask Jesus to multiply time in your life each day by reading the Bible daily. THE YEAR OF REPENTANCE

"A people living in darkness has seen a great light." -Matthew 4:16

Jesus begins this new year as He begins almost everything else. He proclaims: "Repent! The kingdom of God is at hand!" (Mt 4:17, our transl.)

It's difficult for us to understand Jesus' preoccupation with repentance unless we put ourselves in His place, that is, on the cross. Jesus died on Calvary to take away our sins. He greatly desires that we repent and accept this supreme act of love. Therefore, on the first evening of His resurrection, He commissioned His apostles to forgive sins in His name (Jn 20:23). Before His Ascension, he sent out the apostles and all of us to preach repentance to all the nations (Lk 24:47). At Pentecost, He and the Father even sent God the Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity. The Spirit convicts us of our sins and leads us to repent (Jn 16:8).

Begin the year right. Apply to your sins the blood Jesus shed on Calvary. Repent, celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, rejoice! There's great joy in heaven over one sinner who repents (Lk 15:7).

Prayer: Father, may this be the year of repentance.

Promise: "There is One greater in you than there is in the world." -1 Jn 4:4

Praise: The Holy Name of Jesus means "God saves," which means we need saving. Praise You, Jesus our Savior. Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess Your most adorable and holy name.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SEEING IN THE DARK AND RISING IN THE LIGHT
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=1/2/2011

"Nations shall walk by Your light, and kings by Your shining radiance." -Isaiah 60:3

On this feast of Epiphany, the Lord commands us to "rise up in splendor"
(Is 60:1). He has come into our lives, given us a new nature, and loved us
tenderly this Christmas season.

Considering all the Lord has done for us and seeing the darkness that
covers most of the earth (Is 60:2), we must rise up to carry the light of
Jesus. We must not only watch the wise men and women as they follow
the star to Christ, but also follow them as they take the gospel to the nations.

Rise up and witness for Jesus (Acts 1:8). Rise up and make disciples of
all nations (Mt 28:19). Begin with your family, friends, co-workers, and
neighbors. Then reach out to your city, country, and world.

Rise up in the splendor of evangelization. Put the gold of your possessions,
the frankincense of your prayer (see Rv 5:8), and the myrrh of your
suffering at the feet of Jesus for the spread of the gospel.

If you have a new nature in Jesus, you must rise up. If you can see in the
dark, you must rise up. Put every detail of your life at the service of world
evangelization. See in the dark; rise in the light!

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE

"LOFTY AND INCOMPARABLE DIGNITY"

The Incarnation reveals to us, with intense light and in a surprising
way, that every human life has a very lofty and incomparable dignity.

"GOD LOVES US DEEPLY"

God loves us deeply, totally and without making distinctions. He calls
us to friendship with Him, He makes us part of a reality beyond every
imagination and every thought and word: His divine life itself.

A NEW YEAR'S REVOLUTION - One Bread, One Body, 1/1/2011

"Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature" (Mk 16:15).

Saturday, January 1, 2011, Mary, Mother of God

Numbers 6:22-27, Galatians 4:4-7, Psalm 67:2-3, 5-6, 8, Luke 2:16-21

A NEW YEAR'S REVOLUTION

"Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart." -Luke 2:19

What thoughts did Mary reflect upon? Were they sentimental? If you were having a baby in a real barn, sentimental thoughts would not be uppermost in your mind. Were Mary's thoughts contemplative, mystical, or profound? Were Mary's thoughts full of anger? Mary had reason to be angry since she was forced to have her baby in a stable, but we know that Mary did not sin. Therefore, if her thoughts were of anger, they were of righteous anger (see Eph 4:26).

The only extended statement in the Bible on which to base any conclusions about Mary's thoughts is her "Magnificat." In Luke 1:46-55, Mary praised the Lord and then proclaimed a revolution. She prophesied: "He (the Lord) has shown might with His arm; He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away" (Lk 1:51-53). Mary called for a revolution not through physical violence but through repentance. This revolution was made possible by her Son Jesus, Who is a Sign of contradiction for the rise and fall of many (Lk 2:34).

For years, many of us have been making and breaking New Year's resolutions. Change an "s" to a "v", and make a New Year's revolution in Jesus. This will make "Happy New Year" not just a wish, but a reality.

Prayer: Father, use Christians to turn this upside-down world right-side up (see Acts 17:6).

Promise: "The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!" -Nm 6:24-26

Praise: The Blessed Virgin Mary hoped for the Messiah and got far more than she could have imagined.
