SEE-SAW

"The skies opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Him." -Luke 3:21-22

The first action of Jesus after His baptism was: "He saw" (Mk 1:10). When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John, "immediately on coming up out of the water He saw" the sky split and the Spirit descend on Him (Mk 1:10). Before Cornelius and his household received the Holy Spirit, Peter began preaching to them in "these words; 'I begin to see' " (Acts 10:34). It is prophesied that the Messiah upon Whom God's Spirit rests will "open the eyes of the blind" (Is 42:7).
Today's celebration of the baptism of Jesus is associated with seeing God, others, and ourselves in a new way. After receiving the graces of this last day in the Christmas season, we will "no longer know Him by" our old standards (2 Cor 5:16). We will see God not as a force or a thing or even as only a person; we will see Him as our own Father Who loves us (and even likes us) (Mk 1:11). This will transform the way we see ourselves. We will truly believe we are chosen, beloved, royal, priestly, and holy (see 1 Pt 2:9). Then we will see other people as God sees them. We will love our neighbors as ourselves (Mt 22:39). We will "esteem the person of every" human being (1 Pt 2:17).
On this last day of the Christmas season, renew your baptismal promises, open your eyes, and receive the Spirit.

Prayer: Father and Son, today send the Holy Spirit, the true Christmas Spirit.

Promise: "When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us; not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy." -Ti 3:4-5

Praise: Praise Jesus, beloved Son of the Father! Lord Jesus, baptize us in the Holy Spirit, that we may sing Your praises everywhere.

IN CONFIDENCE - One Bread, One Body, 1/12/2013

Saturday, January 12, 2013, St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, (Canada)

1 John 5:14-21, Psalm 149:1-6, 9, John 3:22-30

IN CONFIDENCE

"We have this confidence in God: that He hears us whenever we ask for anything according to His will. And since we know that He hears us whenever we ask, we know that what we have asked Him for is ours." -1 John 5:14-15

One of the Christmas gifts the Lord wants to give you is confidence in Him. We develop confidence in God as we do with other people - by communicating with God, asking Him for things, and receiving those things. If we neglect prayer, pray for our will to be done instead of His, or pray for what we wrongly think is His will, we don't have our prayers answered. This may result in disappointment, confusion, or feeling we're not loved by God. Under these circumstances, we don't develop confidence in God.
To have confidence in God means praying according to His will (1 Jn 5:14). It means listening to God in prayer more than speaking, so we can learn His will. Moreover, prayer that leads to confidence in God is the prayer of repentance. We repent of allowing all our idols (see 1 Jn 5:21) to speak so loudly to us that they drown out the voice of God. The listening prayer of repentance seeks, learns, and prays for God's will. This prayer then is in the name of Jesus (Jn 14:13). It is always answered. It makes us confident we are loved and that Jesus is Lord. Get confidence for Christmas and the new year.

Prayer: Father, teach me to pray towards confidence and then with confidence in You.

Promise: "The Groom's best man waits there listening for Him and is overjoyed to hear His voice. That is my joy, and it is complete. He must increase, while I must decrease." -Jn 3:29-30

Praise: St. Marguerite used her spiritual gift of administration to build God's kingdom.

TRINITY-TALK - One Bread, One Body, 1/11/2013

Friday, January 11, 2013

1 John 5:5-13, Psalm 147:12-15, 19-20, Luke 5:12-16

TRINITY-TALK

"Do we not accept human testimony? The testimony of God is much greater: it is the testimony God has given on His own Son's behalf." -1 John 5:9

We conquer the world by believing that Jesus is the Son of God (1 Jn 5:5), that is, He is God. We believe in Jesus as Son of God by believing the testimony of the Spirit (1 Jn 5:6) and of the Father (1 Jn 5:9). "The testimony is this: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son" (1 Jn 5:11). Therefore, if we believe in the testimony of the Father and the Spirit concerning the Son, we have life (1 Jn 5:12), abundant life (Jn 10:10), and victory over the world. If we do not believe, we make God a liar (1 Jn 5:10) and deprive ourselves of life.
How do the Father and the Spirit testify on behalf of Jesus? The Father may speak audibly as He did at Jesus' Baptism (Mt 3:17), the Transfiguration (Mt 17:5), or on other occasions (e.g., Jn 12:28). Usually, the Father testifies for Jesus by His Word abiding in our hearts (Jn 5:37-38). The Spirit has testified for Jesus in the visible forms of a dove (Lk 3:22), a strong wind, and tongues as of fire (Acts 2:2-3). However, the Spirit usually comes invisibly.
The ways the Father and the Spirit testify on behalf of Jesus are not as important as our response to this testimony. The Trinity is testifying. Listen and believe.

Prayer: Father, beginning this Christmas season, may I accept Your witness about Jesus so I can witness for Jesus (Acts 1:8).

Promise: "Jesus stretched out His hand to touch Him and said, 'I do will it. Be cured.' Immediately the leprosy left him."-Lk 5:13

Praise: Jesus healed Maria of colon cancer.

LOVING CHRISTMAS

"We, for our part, love because He first loved us." -1 John 4:19

We cannot give love unless we first have received it. The Lord has poured out love in our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). Yet have our hearts been open? Have we received the incarnate, crucified, infinite, unconditional love of God for each of us personally? The purpose of life and of Christmas is to receive the perfect love of God already given. Then, when we open and receive the gift of God's love, we can give it to others.
We open ourselves to the downpour of God's love by:
* going to Confession regularly. Sin has stopped us up; repentance opens us up.
* praying, especially praying the Mass. Remember, it's Christ-Mass time. When we continue to communicate with the Lord in the Mass, we open ourselves more deeply to His love.
* reading the Bible. God's Word is like a two-edged sword which penetrates, divides, judges, and opens our hearts (see Heb 4:12).
* coming together in Jesus' name. Jesus promised He would be present in a special way when we gather in His name (Mt 18:20). In this presence, we tend to open up to His love.

Make this Christmas a "grand opening." Let yourself be loved. Live in His love (see Jn 15:10).

Prayer: Father, You are Love. May I live in You and live in love (1 Jn 4:16).

Promise: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me. He has sent Me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives." -Lk 4:18

Praise: Martha prayed for decades for her husband to be converted. At her funeral, he made a pledge to become a Catholic. Now he receives Jesus in the Eucharist every day.

GOING FOR A WALK? - One Bread, One Body, 1/9/2013

GOING FOR A WALK?

"He came walking toward them on the water." -Mark 6:48

In the Gospels, we see Jesus walking on the water on several occasions. Once He got into the boat and the wind died down (Mk 6:51). Another time, the boat miraculously covered the three miles to the shore in one second (Jn 6:21). On another occasion, at Peter's request, Jesus commanded Peter to walk on the water with Him (Mt 14:28-29). The gospels seem to indicate that we have something to say about what effect the water-walking Jesus has on us.
Most of us think of only one thing when we're in a storm. We want peace and safety, and that's what we get, and all that we get. If we had more faith, we would be open to Jesus doing more. The Lord is willing to get us somewhere fast, to accelerate our growth in holiness, to speed up our efforts to evangelize, and even to hasten His final coming (2 Pt 3:12).
Few Christians have the faith and boldness of Peter. We're content to sit in the boat and watch Jesus walk on water, but we could join Him if we requested it. We could walk on the waters of sin and evil. We could even quickly crush Satan under our feet (Rm 16:20). Let's go for a walk with Jesus.

Prayer: Father, by faith may I walk on water and not sink. On this Epiphany, give all Christians a new and deeper faith.

Promise: "We should have confidence on the day of judgment; for our relation to this world is just like His. Love has no room for fear." -1 Jn 4:17-18

Praise: Walter received the gift of praising the Lord in tongues the night before he was to give a talk at a Life in the Spirit Seminar.

TEACHER'S PETS

"They were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them at great length." -Mark 6:34

For years, I taught the Bible to my children in fifteen-minute morning sessions before leaving for work. Looking at their little faces, I often recalled Jesus' quote about sheep without a shepherd. Jesus' response to shepherdless sheep is to teach them at great length, and so I imitated Him. Another editor of this booklet attended Presentation Ministries' 12-week course on How to Teach the Bible. When asked his reasons for taking the course, he replied that he wanted to teach his children the Scriptures. As Jesus did, this father also responded by teaching the Scriptures.
The world is filled with sheep without a shepherd. People respond in many ways. Some responses are unthinking and uncharitable: apathy, escapism, criticism, condemnation, exploitation, etc. However, as disciples of Jesus, we imitate His response, which was to immediately teach the shepherdless sheep at great length (Mk 6:34). He followed that by feeding them physically (Mk 6:41-42).
Look around you. Where are the sheep Jesus has put in your life? Are they sitting at your dinner table, sharing your bedroom, in neighboring cubicles, houses, or pews? You can respond to them unthinkingly and uncharitably, or you can respond as Jesus did by teaching them at length. The sheep are waiting for your response. "God's flock is in your midst; give it a shepherd's care" (1 Pt 5:2). Jesus says: " 'Do you love Me?' Teach and 'feed My sheep' " (Jn 21:17).

Prayer: Jesus, Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11), give me Your shepherd's heart for the sheep in my life.

Promise: "He sent His only Son to the world that we might have life through Him." -1 Jn 4:9

Praise: Jesus healed Brett of terminal cancer.

CHRISTMAS GIVING OR GIVING CHRISTMAS?

"His commandment is this: we are to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ." -1 John 3:23

Yesterday we celebrated the highlight of the Christmas season, Epiphany. The love of Christ and Christmas is welling up inside us and overflowing. We've just got to tell someone and everyone about Jesus. He's God, Man, Savior, and Lord. He's the only Hope of the world and the only Meaning of life.
In prayer and evangelization, we must bring to Jesus "all those afflicted with various diseases and racked with pain: the possessed, the lunatics, the paralyzed" (Mt 4:24). Jesus will cure them all, and, even better, give them new and eternal life.
So many have missed out on Christmas because they have not accepted Christ. Without knowing Christ personally, they have no possibility of experiencing a real Christmas. Yet when we share Jesus with others, we give them the opportunity for their very first Christmas. Then "a people living in darkness" will see "a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light" will arise (Mt 4:16).
Don't just give a Christmas gift, give Christmas by giving Christ.

Prayer: Jesus, without You we can do nothing, including Christmas (Jn 15:5). May I tell someone about You today and thereby give You what You want for Christmas.

Promise: "For there is One greater in you than there is in the world. -1 Jn 4:4

Praise: St. Raymond prayed: "May you never be numbered among those whose house is peaceful, quiet, and free from care, those on whom the Lord's chastisement does not descend."

(We might think "giving Christ" to another is "impossible." Learn how to go about this through our audio tape "Mission Impossible "AV 46-1 or video V-46.)
