"MAKE DISCIPLES" (Mt 28:19)
"As He moved on He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus at his tax collector's post, and said to him, 'Follow Me.' Levi got up and became His follower." -Mark 2:14
Jesus walked into a tax collector's office and said: "Follow Me." He walked into a commercial fishing business and said: "Follow Me" (see Mt 4:19). The first thing, and almost the last thing, Jesus said to Peter was: "Follow Me" (Jn 21:19). Jesus is obviously preoccupied with calling us to follow Him, that is, to be His disciples and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19).
"Jesus said to all: 'Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps' " (Lk 9:23). To be Jesus' disciples, we must follow Him totally and immediately (Lk 9:57-62). Jesus said: "In the same way, none of you can be My disciple if he does not renounce all his possessions" (Lk 14:33). We must subordinate all relationships, people, possessions, and our very selves to our pre-eminent relationship with Jesus (Lk 14:26, 33).
Do you want to move from being merely a good person, a church-goer, or even a prayerful person to being a disciple of the Lord? If so, renew your Baptism and decide now by God's grace to deny your very self, take up your cross each day, and follow Jesus. Be a disciple and make disciples who disciple others.
Prayer: Father, may I glorify You by bearing much fruit in discipleship (Jn 15:8).
Promise: "God's word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates and divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart." -Heb 4:12
Praise: Maria quietly and patiently continues to pray for her husband's conversion.

IS IT UNJUST TO BE FORGIVEN? - One Bread, One Body, 1/18/2013

IS IT UNJUST TO BE FORGIVEN?
"The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." -Mark 2:10
God is just, and the world He created is just, although it does not appear to be just at every moment. However, eventually God "will repay every man for what he has done" (Rm 2:6).
God is merciful. He treats us much better than we deserve. He is more than fair, better than just. God is not limited to being just, for His "mercy triumphs over judgment" (Jas 2:13).
Is God's being better than just unjust? Is it contradictory to be both just and merciful? The question in life is not so much: "Why do bad things happen to good people?", but "Why do good things happen to bad people?" God's mercy is more mysterious and therefore more problematic than His justice.
The Lord can be merciful without ignoring justice because He is "our Justice" (1 Cor 1:30). By dying on the cross in our place, Jesus fulfilled "the just demands of the law" (Rm 8:4). By fulfilling justice, He is free to move beyond justice - to mercy. Therefore, when Jesus forgave the paralytic's sin and claimed the authority to forgive sins, He was claiming to be God, our Justice, and even crucified Mercy. Receive God's forgiveness. Abandon yourself to the mercy of God.
Prayer: Father, by faith in Jesus may I rejoice in this season of mercy.
Promise: "Let us strive to enter into that rest, so that no one may fall, in imitation of the example of Israel's unbelief." -Heb 4:11
Praise: Josh repented and reversed his vasectomy. God blessed his family with two more children.
(We can learn to be merciful as God is merciful. For related teaching, order our leaflets, "Unforgiveness is the Cause", "Fourteen Questions on Forgiveness", and the "Novena of Mary, the Mother of Forgiveness"," "or our audio tapes AV 41-1 or AV 106A-1, AV 106A-3, AV 106B-1 or AV 104-1, respectively.)

MR. UNCLEAN - One Bread, One Body, 1/17/2013
Thursday, January 17, 2013, St. Anthony
Hebrews 3:7-14, Psalm 95:6-11, Mark 1:40-45

MR. UNCLEAN
"Jesus stretched out His hand, touched him, and said: 'I do will it. Be cured.' The leprosy left him then and there, and he was cured." -Mark 1:41-42
Jesus touched the leper and thereby made Himself ritually unclean. This meant Jesus could not go to the Temple or the synagogue. He could not even enter a town until the leper He touched was pronounced to be clean by the priest. This is one of the reasons Jesus told the man to go and present Himself to the priest without telling anyone about what had happened (Mk 1:44). However, "the man went off and began to proclaim the whole matter freely" (Mk 1:45). Eventually, this problem was resolved since Jesus later went into cities and to the Temple.
However, in the end, Jesus returned to the ranks of the unclean. "Jesus died outside the gate, to sanctify the people by His own blood. Let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the insult which He bore" (Heb 13:12-13). Let us go to the Untouchable One Whose touch frees us from the leprosy of sin. Let us worship the spotless, pure Lamb of God. Let us love the divine Outcast Who has never cast anyone out (Jn 6:37).
Do you realize what Jesus suffered to make us clean? Thank Him forever.
Prayer: Father, I offer my life in thanksgiving for Your love.
Promise: "Encourage one another daily while it is still 'today,' so that no one grows hardened by the deceit of sin. We have become partners of Christ only if we maintain to the end that confidence with which we began." -Heb 3:13-14
Praise: St. Anthony sold all his possessions and lived a life which emphasized that the love of God took precedence over all else.
(Even when we don't think we can find victory in impossible circumstances, Jesus is there for us. Order our tape on "Hope for the Hopeless" on audio AV 63-1 or video V-63.)

GOOD DAY OR GOD'S DAY? - One Bread, One Body, 1/16/2013

GOOD DAY OR GOD'S DAY?
"Rising early the next morning, He went off to a lonely place in the desert; there He was absorbed in prayer." -Mark 1:35
Jesus was tempted to do the right thing at the wrong time in the wrong place. An entire town wanted Jesus to stay put and perform more healings (Mk 1:36-37). He overcame this temptation, refused to stay where He was popular, did His Father's will, and moved on to proclaim the good news (Mk 1:37-38). How many of us fall for the temptation to do good things but not God's thing? Often we are tempted at nine in the morning to do something good that will divert us all day from doing God's will.
Jesus was prepared to overcome this temptation because He had risen early before everyone else to go off to a lonely place in the desert to pray (Mk 1:35). We too will start off the day right if we report for duty and worship first thing in the morning. Then we are on the way to a better-than-good day, to God's day - a day in His perfect will.
It all starts with early morning prayer. "The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, His mercies are not spent; they are renewed each morning" (Lam 3:22). "Morning after morning He opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back" (Is 50:4-5). Jesus is "the Dayspring," the Dawn, Who "shall visit us in His mercy" (Lk 1:78). Offer the first fruits and the first moments of every day to Him.
Prayer: Father, may I be constantly in prayer and in Your will.
Promise: "Jesus likewise had a full share in ours, that by His death He might rob the devil, the prince of death, of his power, and free those who through fear of death had been slaves their whole life long." -Heb 2:14-15
Praise: Martha's crippling arthritis could have led her to bitterness. Instead, she chose to surrender her will to Jesus and learned to depend totally on the Lord for endurance and strength.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE EUCHARIST - One Bread, One Body, 1/15/2013

SPOTLIGHT ON THE EUCHARIST
"At present we do not see all things thus subject, but we do see Jesus." -Hebrews 2:8-9
I walked to Mass today amid dark clouds and a blustery wind. Because of the cloud cover, the Church was relatively dark for a noon Mass. As the priest lifted the Holy Eucharist at the moment of consecration, a shaft of bright sunlight shone through the stained glass directly onto the altar, flooding the Eucharist in brilliant light. The beam of light continued during the elevation of the Precious Blood. Following the consecration, the clouds again covered the sky. The sun broke through once more, at the instant the consecrated host and cup were lifted at the doxology to close the Eucharistic prayer. After the priest lowered the host and cup, the clouds covered the sun the rest of the day.
We often "walk in the dark valley" (Ps 23:4). We know "all things" are subject to King Jesus, but often we can't see this (Heb 2:8). Instead, what we see is that at least half of the registered Catholics are so uninspired by His eucharistic presence that they can't manage to spend an hour with Him at Sunday Mass (cf Mt 26:40). If we aren't diligent, we might soon join this "other half."
The Eucharist is a "mystery of light" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Pope John Paul II, 6). "We do see Jesus" in the Eucharist (Heb 2:9), yet we must fix our eyes ever more earnestly on Him (Heb 3:1). The more we look at Jesus present in the Eucharist, the more we are able to see His brightness (Jn 8:12). The less attention we pay to Jesus in the Eucharist, the more we focus on the darkness and forget Him (see Jn 3:19-20). Go to Mass frequently, daily if possible. Devote your life to Jesus in the Eucharist.
Prayer: Jesus, Bread of Life (Jn 6:35), fill me with "eucharistic amazement" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Pope John Paul II, 6).
Promise: "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey!" -Mk 1:27
Praise: Josephine spends one or two hours per week in the quiet of God's presence in eucharistic adoration.

"This is the time of fulfillment." -Mark 1:15
Today is the first day of "ordinary time." This doesn't have anything to do with being ordinary; rather, it means this day is "ordered" according to a certain system. Therefore, you don't have to expect this day to be ordinary. The afterglow of Christmas is still with us. This too is the day the Lord has made (see Ps 118:24). "Ordinary time" is also the acceptable time; this day is the day of salvation (see 2 Cor 6:2).
"Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" (Mk 1:15) Jesus is saying to each of us and to countless others: "Come after Me; I will make you fishers of men" (Mk 1:17). No matter how committed we are to Jesus, we can always grow deeper in our love for Him. Today, may each of us follow Jesus more closely and love Him more deeply than ever before. If we do, this will be no ordinary time. Love Jesus more and more!
Prayer: Father, "I had rather one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere" (Ps 84:11).
Promise: "In times past, God spoke in fragmentary and varied ways to our fathers through the prophets; in this, the final age, He has spoken to us through His Son, Whom He has made Heir of all things and through Whom He first created the universe." -Heb 1:1-2
Praise: Reading the Bible was the instrument God used to nurture a greater spiritual hunger in Philip, who was then led to study the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Vatican II documents, and papal encyclicals.
(Follow Jesus more closely and help others to do so. Order our series on "Biblical Counseling" on audio AV 13A-1, AV 13A-3, AV 13B-1 or video starting with V-13A.)

PM eNewsletter The baptism of the Lord
January 13th The baptism of the Lord
Jesus, You were baptised in the river Jordon by John the Baptist,
to show us all the value and need for baptism.
This sacrament truly makes us all sons and daughters of God.
What an amazing gift we receive.
Who can't truly understand Your love for us, that even though we
are naturally prone to sin, we are called to come above our human
condition and be Your brothers and sisters.
Help us to realize that Your love also calls us to live our baptismal
promises, to reject satan, and all evil spirits.
Help us to help.
Amen and Amen.
Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday SEE-SAW
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/13/2013
"The skies opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Him." -Luke 3:21-22
The first action of Jesus after His baptism was: "He saw" (Mk 1:10). When Jesus was baptized in
the Jordan River by John, "immediately on coming up out of the water He saw" the sky split and
the Spirit descend on Him (Mk 1:10). Before Cornelius and his household received the Holy
Spirit, Peter began preaching to them in "these words; 'I begin to see' " (Acts 10:34). It is
prophesied that the Messiah upon Whom God's Spirit rests will "open the eyes of the blind"
(Is 42:7).
Today's celebration of the baptism of Jesus is associated with seeing God, others, and ourselves
in a new way. After receiving the graces of this last day in the Christmas season, we will "no
longer know Him by" our old standards (2 Cor 5:16). We will see God not as a force or a thing or
even as only a person; we will see Him as our own Father Who loves us (and even likes us)
(Mk 1:11). This will transform the way we see ourselves. We will truly believe we are chosen,
beloved, royal, priestly, and holy (see 1 Pt 2:9). Then we will see other people as God sees
them. We will love our neighbors as ourselves (Mt 22:39). We will "esteem the person of every"
human being (1 Pt 2:17).
On this last day of the Christmas season, renew your baptismal promises, open your eyes, and
receive the Spirit.
Prayer: Father and Son, today send the Holy Spirit, the true Christmas Spirit.
Promise: "When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us; not because of
any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy." -Ti 3:4-5
Praise: Praise Jesus, beloved Son of the Father! Lord Jesus, baptize us in the Holy Spirit,
that we may sing Your praises everywhere.

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
"WATCH OVER YOUR CHILDREN"
Dear married couples, watch over your children and, in a world dominated by technology,
transmit to them, with serenity and trust, reasons for living, the strength of faith,
pointing them towards high goals and supporting them in their fragility.
A WORD TO CHILDREN
... Let me add a word to the children here: be sure that you always maintain a relationship
of deep affection and attentive care for your parents, and see that your relationships with
your brothers and sisters are opportunities to grow in love.
"THE LIGHT OF PEACE"
It is in the family that the light of peace is first kindled in hearts so that they may
illuminate our world.
