CHRISTMAS COMFORT

"Comfort, give comfort to My people, says your God. Speak tenderly." -Isaiah 40:1-2

The Lord promises to comfort and speak tenderly to us. In the second reading, the Church proclaims in the name of the Lord that "the heavens will vanish with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire" (2 Pt 3:10). How comforting! In the Gospel reading, we meet St. John the Baptizer, one of the least comforting characters in the Bible and in history (see Mk 1:2ff). The Lord's ways are not our ways, and His idea of comfort is not our idea of comfort (see Is 55:8).
The Lord does not want to give us the superficial comfort of temporary relief or a bit of encouragement. Rather, the Lord promises to baptize us in the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8), the Paraclete, the Comforter (see e.g. Jn 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7). This divine Comforter will free us from generations of slavery, sin, guilt, and punishment (Is 40:2). Comfort will begin with the Holy Spirit convicting the world and us of sin, justice, and condemnation (Jn 16:8). Then we must let the Spirit lead us from conviction to repentance, confession, and forgiveness. After this, we will personally experience that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Cor 3:17). In the comfort of the Spirit, we will truly enter into the freedom of the Lord. We will displace the culture of death with a civilization of love and life. Come, Holy Spirit of Christmas and comfort!

Prayer: Father, comfort me Your way.

Promise: "Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord God, Who rules by His strong arm." -Is 40:9-10

Praise: Jesus came forth from the tomb; "Truth shall spring out of the earth" (Ps 85:12). Praise the risen Jesus, "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (Jn 14:6).

WORKING ON CHRISTMAS - One Bread, One Body, 12/6/2014

WORKING ON CHRISTMAS

"The harvest is good but laborers are scarce." -Matthew 9:37

Several billion people don't know the Christ of Christmas. They don't know He loves them so much that He died on the cross for them. They don't know that He intends to raise them from the dead. There are so many people who have not heard the good news of Jesus, because so few are working to tell people about Jesus.
Therefore:
* "Beg the harvest Master to send out laborers to gather His harvest" (Mt 9:38).
* Answer your own prayer by working in the harvest.
* Believe that Jesus has given you the "authority to expel unclean spirits and to cure sickness and disease of every kind" (Mt 10:1).
* Use your authority in Jesus. "Cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons" (Mt 10:8).
* Work to show that God's kingdom is at hand by giving as a gift what has been given you (Mt 10:8).

As we prepare for Christmas, we have so many things to do. However, our main job is to tell others about Jesus, for no one can have Christmas without knowing Christ. Pray for workers. Be a worker. Be a miracle-worker. Work to prepare yourself and the world for Christmas.

Prayer: Father, give me the evangelistic zeal of a missionary.

Promise: "He will be gracious to you when you cry out, as soon as He hears He will answer you." -Is 30:19

Praise: St. Nicholas gave gifts that freed others from sin and brought them closer to Christ.

THE SIGHT OF CHRISTMAS - One Bread, One Body, 12/5/2014

THE SIGHT OF CHRISTMAS

Jesus "touched their eyes and said, 'Because of your faith it shall be done to you'; and they recovered their sight." -Matthew 9:29-30

The Church prepares us for Christ's Christmas coming by proclaiming Jesus healing the blind (see also Is 29:18; 35:5). This applies not only to the physically blind, but especially to the spiritually blind, who have been blinded by the darkness of sin (see 1 Jn 2:11) and "the god of the present age" (see 2 Cor 4:4). The cause of spiritual blindness is sin, and we are freed from spiritual blindness by repentance. When we sin, it is as if we take a knife and stab our eyes with it (see Is 29:9). When we repent and go to Confession, it is like having an operation in which our sight is restored.
The physically blind will be able to see Christ this Christmas through the eyes of faith, but the spiritually blind cannot have a true Christmas because they cannot see the Christ of Christmas. Spiritual blindness is an especially pathetic condition not only because we are blinded to Christ and Christmas, but because we are even blinded to our blindness. Only through an intervention by Jesus our Savior can we see our blindness and ask for help. Call out to Jesus: "I want to see" (Mk 10:51). Jesus will heal us and give us the Christmas present that makes it possible for us to have Christmas.

Prayer: Father, may I see Jesus present in Holy Communion so that I will desire to receive Him in Mass daily.

Promise: "Those who err in spirit shall acquire understanding." -Is 29:24

Praise: Max, though physically blind and fearful, accepted Jesus as his Savior on his deathbed.

(For a related teaching, order our tape Spiritual Blindness" on audio AV 65-1 or video V-65.)

EXTREME HEART MAKEOVER - One Bread, One Body, 12/4/2014

Thursday, December 4, 2014, St. John of Damascus

Isaiah 26:1-6, Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27, Matthew 7:21, 24-27

EXTREME HEART MAKEOVER

"Trust in the Lord forever!" -Isaiah 26:4

Advent is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Just as a mother has nine months to prepare her home for the arrival of her baby, so we have four weeks to prepare the way of the Lord in our life. A litmus test for our hearts is to compare our lifestyle and our actions against the Word of God. It's easy to give Jesus only lip-service, and not life-service.
* Are you keeping God's commandments? Jesus says: "If you love Me, keep My commandments" (see Jn 14:21; 15:10).
* Are you allowing God's Kingdom to come? For example, if you are contracepting, when you pray the Our Father, you tell God "Your will be done," but block His life so that His "Kingdom" cannot "come" (see Mt 6:10).
* Are you behaving like an orphan, even though you are a child of God? For example, are you fearful that you can't feed your family, even though Almighty God has promised to provide for you? (Mt 6:32-34)

There are many other Scriptures by which we can measure our hearts against God's Word. Does your lifestyle show that your heart trusts in God? Ask the Lord this Advent to give you a new heart (Ez 36:26).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, not knowing Scripture means not knowing You (Catechism, 133). This Advent, I devote myself to knowing You by Your standards (see 2 Cor 5:16).

Promise: "None of those who cry out, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven." -Mt 7:21

Praise: St. John helped others to grow deeper in faith by the many theological works and tracts about truth that he wrote.

NOT WELFARE, BUT WELL-FARE - One Bread, One Body, 12/3/2014

Wednesday, December 3, 2014, St. Francis Xavier

Isaiah 25:6-10, Psalm 23:1-6, Matthew 15:29-37

NOT WELFARE, BUT WELL-FARE

"He took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks He broke them and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. All ate until they were full." -Matthew 15:36-37

Today's Scripture readings all foreshadow the blessed feast which is celebrated at Mass in Holy Communion. The rich feast (Is 25:6) celebrated at the banquet table (see Ps 23:5) to nourish the multitudes (Mt 15:38) is the Eucharist we receive at every Mass. The word "Eucharist" even means "to give thanks."
The thanksgiving described in today's Scripture readings is not just saying "Gee, thanks, God." Eucharist occurs in the context of the Mass, a word that means "sent." In the Mass are elements of sacrifice, worship, receiving the Eucharist, giving thanks, being sent. The response God desires is a thankful lifestyle of obedient faith and loving service. The spirit of the Eucharist is not just to "get" but moreover to "give," including a never-ending giving of thanks to the Lord.
Those who received the loaves and fishes in John's Gospel responded by wanting to make Jesus King (Jn 6:15). Jesus wants to be more than a provider, even so much more than a King. Yes, He promises to "provide" (Is 25:6) but He wants us to be disciples, not mere recipients. The Lord is not building a welfare state of those who only receive but never move out of the state of simply being fed. Rather, Jesus is building a kingdom of disciples who feed His lambs (Jn 21:15-17) in thankful, loving service.

Prayer: Jesus, You call Your disciples to feed Your people (Mt 15:36; Lk 12:42). I will thankfully distribute Your blessings.

Promise: "Behold our God, to Whom we looked to save us! This is the Lord for Whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that He has saved us!" -Is 25:9

Praise: St. Francis so identified with the poor to whom he preached the good news that he slept on the ground in a hut and ate mainly rice and water for the seven years he was with them.

GOD MAKES ALL THINGS NEW

"Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra's den, and the child lay his hand on the adder's lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all My holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord." -Isaiah 11:6-9

Can you picture this image? The Republican is a guest of the Democrat. The baby in the womb and the abortionist are friends; the liberal and the conservative dine together in harmony. Palestinians and Israelis send their border patrols home. There is no need for mandatory child protection training. Divorce is unheard of, because all husbands and wives are living in joy and peace.
This scene is what we await as Christians. We believe God will bring about His kingdom of peace, in which people are so transformed in Jesus that mortal enemies become friends and co-workers. Those who prey on others shall have a totally new and different nature in Jesus (Gal 6:15). Lest we become skeptical, the above scenario has happened throughout salvation history (see e.g. Acts 9:18, 26-28; 10:13-15, 25ff; Mt 9:9-10; Jn 4:9, 39-42).
Skepticism melts in the glory that is fear of the Lord. Stand amazed at the omnipotent, almighty, loving-kindness of our God. Delight in the fear of the Lord (Is 11:3). Receive a new nature in Jesus (2 Cor 5:17).

Prayer: Lord, You have overcome the world (Jn 16:33). May I be overcome by awe in Your presence and never doubt You again.

Promise: "Many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." -Lk 10:24

Praise: Alice has built her life around Jesus and has received Him daily in the Eucharist for forty years.

"FEED MY SHEEP" (Jn 21:17)

"In days to come, the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it; many peoples shall come and say: 'Come, let us climb the Lord's mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that He may instruct us in His ways, and we may walk in His paths.' " -Isaiah 2:2-3

Today, many stream toward shopping malls and purchasing Websites, saying, "Come, let us finish our Christmas shopping" (cp Is 2:3). Many merchants hear this call and have answered it, setting up shop to supply the consumer demand. We at Presentation Ministries follow a different call: to provide materials for instruction of those who "stream" to the Lord for instruction.
The above passage, Isaiah 2:2-3, is a foundational prophecy for Presentation Ministries. Decades ago, we at PM heard the call of God to receive and then exercise the spiritual gift of teaching. We sensed that God was calling us to provide a banquet of Catholic Scriptural resources for instruction in God's "ways" and to guide Christians as they set out to "walk in His paths" (Is 2:3). We heard that there would be a famine for hearing God's Word (Am 8:11) and built up and made available a storehouse of teachings to instruct and feed people (see Gn 41:48-49, 56ff).
Pray for us in our ministry to send forth God's instruction. Work with us by feeding people with God's Word. We have many resources at our website, www.presentationministries.com, which can help feed both new and seasoned disciples. Isaiah prophesies that people will stream toward the Lord for instruction. Feed His people (Jn 21:17).

Prayer: Father, You have been preparing us for years. May we be quick to lead the streaming crowds to the banquet of Your Word.

Promise: "Many will come from the east and the west and will find a place at the banquet in the kingdom of God." -Mt 8:11

Praise: When interviewed after winning a big game, Steven was quick to give the credit to the "Author of Life" (Acts 3:15).
