FEAR PREVENTION
"[Jesus] went off to the mountain to pray." -Mark 6:46
In today's Scripture readings, love is not contrasted to hate. Rather, love is contrasted with fear (1 Jn 4:18), and the antidote to fear is prayer. Thus, the Lord teaches us that love increases through a relationship with God. Prayer is a conversation with God, with us doing most of the listening and God doing most of the speaking.
Consider a young man and woman in love. They contemplate marriage. Considerable risks and expenses are involved: one spouse might die prematurely, the expenses of bearing, raising, and educating children, risks of home-ownership, with the ever-present possibilities of illness, robbery, fire, storm damage, and so on. While prudence and responsibility demand attention to these factors, the risks involved are not usually the overriding factor. The love-relationship of the couple overrides the accompanying risks, and the couple decides to marry. They spend more time focusing on their mutual love than on the dangers. Their mutual love overrides their fears.
We are to be in a lifelong love-relationship with the Lord. Even more so than the young couple, it is critically important that we spend prime time loving the Lord, worshipping Him, and listening to Him. We grow to know Him in a deep personal way. We learn to trust Him and rest in Him. Our nourished, committed love for the Lord will drive away our fear. If you are afraid, spend more time in prayer. Rest in Him. Be still before Him, and know He is God and Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16; Ps 46:11).
Prayer: Father, greatly increase my love for You.
Promise: "It is I. Do not be afraid!" -Mk 6:50
Praise: St. André prayed with many for healings, and the Lord worked "signs and wonders" through him (cf Acts 5:12).

FACTS IT TO ME
Jesus "broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to distribute. He divided the two fish among all of them and they ate until they had their fill." -Mark 6:41-42
In the Christmas season, we celebrate the historical event that God became man and was born in Bethlehem. Christmas should not be about fictitious reindeer, snowmen, and other cartoon characters. Christmas is about the Word of God literally becoming flesh (Jn 1:14). Jesus' birth in a stable at Bethlehem is not just a symbol but a fact.
In today's Gospel reading, we read about another fact: the multiplication of the loaves and the fish. This multiplication is not a midrash but a literal miracle. Jesus did not get people to share their supper; He created their supper out of nothing (cf Heb 11:3). The apostles knew that the people in the crowd did not have food (Mk 6:36). The apostles were of the same culture as the crowd. They knew the habits of these people much better than we do. They knew it would take "two hundred days' wages for bread to feed" the crowd (Mk 6:37). Even if the apostles weren't accountants, it was easy for them to count 5,000 men since "the people took their places in hundreds and fifties" (Mk 6:40, 44). Jesus gave the loaves and fish to the apostles to distribute (Mk 6:41). They could see whether the loaves and fish were being created or merely unpacked. The objective interpretation of this Bible passage for almost two thousand years has been that Jesus did a literal, historical, factual miracle by multiplying the loaves and fish (see Catechism, 1335).
In this Christmas season, believe in miracles literally.
Prayer: Father, may I filter my life through Your Word and not vice versa.
Promise: "Love, then, consists in this: not that we have loved God but that He has loved us and has sent His Son as an Offering for our sins." -1 Jn 4:10
Praise: St. John, a missionary to the USA from Bohemia, spread the Faith to Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

THE DOWN PAYMENT - One Bread, One Body, 1/4/2016

THE DOWN PAYMENT
"And this is how we know that He remains in us: from the Spirit that He gave us." -1 John 3:24
At the Christmas season, we celebrate not only Immanuel, "God with us" but also God within us. "Those who keep His commandments remain in Him and He in them" (1 Jn 3:24; see also 1 Jn 4:16; 5:20; Jn 14:20; 6:56; 17:23). Christ in us is our "hope of glory" (Col 1:27).
However, "perhaps you yourselves do not realize that Christ Jesus is in you" (2 Cor 13:5). "This is how we know that He remains in us: from the Spirit that He gave us" (1 Jn 3:24; 4:13). The Holy Spirit is "the first Payment" (2 Cor 1:22). "He is the Pledge of our inheritance, the first Payment against the full redemption of a people God has made His own, to praise His glory" (Eph 1:14). For example, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church, the Body of Christ, continues Christ's ministry of healing by curing "the people of every disease and illness" (Mt 4:23). When we see others healed or when we ourselves are healed, this work of the Holy Spirit gives us reason to believe that all God's promises are true - including His promise to live within us.
When we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7), we walk and believe by the light of the Holy Spirit. Come, only true Christmas Spirit! Come, Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Father, "I believe! Help my lack of faith!" (Mk 9:24, our transl.)
Promise: "A people living in darkness has seen a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen." -Mt 4:16
Praise: St. Elizabeth, the first native-born American to be canonized, was a convert to Catholicism at age thirty. Though she only lived sixteen more years, she walked by faith and led many others to faith in Christ.

Sunday HIGH-RISE
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/3/2016
"Rise up in splendor! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon
you." -Isaiah 60:1
On every Epiphany, the Lord commands us to "rise up in splendor," to put the
light of our lives in Christ on the lampstand to give light to all in
darkness (see Lk 8:16). We must let our "little light shine" and let the
world know the true message of Christmas - that Jesus became a human being,
was born, died on a cross, and rose from the dead to save us.
Before we rise up, we must see two things. First, we must see what God has
done for us, His glory shining on us (Is 60:2). Then, we must see what sin
and Satan have done to the world, for "darkness covers the earth, and thick
clouds cover the peoples" (Is 60:2). When we see the grace we've received and
the deadly darkness of the world, we know we have the responsibility and the
power to rise up. "For God, Who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has
shone in our hearts, that we in turn might make known the glory of God shining
on the face of Christ" (2 Cor 4:6).
To rise, we must see. To see, we must repent. On this greatest day of the
Christmas season, let's give Jesus three gifts - not gold, frankincense, and
myrrh, but repentance, seeing, and rising. Jesus gave us the gift of His birth.
May we give Him the gift of new birth for many in darkness.
Prayer: Father, may I lead more people to believe in Jesus in 2016 than in all
my other years combined.
Promise: "They prostrated themselves and did Him homage. Then they opened their
coffers and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." -Mt 2:11
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Life (Jn 14:6), Love (1 Jn 4:16), Light (Jn 8:12),
and Lord (Phil 2:11)!

Care of Creation
"TRAGIC RISE"
There has been a tragic rise in the number of migrants seeking to flee from
the growing poverty caused by environmental degradation. (25)
"WIDESPREAD INDIFFERENCE"
Sadly, there is widespread indifference to such suffering... Our lack of
response to these tragedies involving our brothers and sisters points to the
loss of that sense of responsibility for our fellow men and women upon which
all civil society is founded. (25)
JOY AND HOPE
... We come together to take charge of this home which has been entrusted to

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
Care of Creation
"TRAGIC RISE"
There has been a tragic rise in the number of migrants seeking to flee from
the growing poverty caused by environmental degradation. (25)
"WIDESPREAD INDIFFERENCE"
Sadly, there is widespread indifference to such suffering... Our lack of
response to these tragedies involving our brothers and sisters points to the
loss of that sense of responsibility for our fellow men and women upon which
all civil society is founded. (25)
JOY AND HOPE
... We come together to take charge of this home which has been entrusted to
us, knowing that all the good which exists here will be taken up into the

HIGH-RISE
"Rise up in splendor! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you." -Isaiah 60:1
On every Epiphany, the Lord commands us to "rise up in splendor," to put the light of our lives in Christ on the lampstand to give light to all in darkness (see Lk 8:16). We must let our "little light shine" and let the world know the true message of Christmas - that Jesus became a human being, was born, died on a cross, and rose from the dead to save us.
Before we rise up, we must see two things. First, we must see what God has done for us, His glory shining on us (Is 60:2). "For God, Who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts, that we in turn might make known the glory of God shining on the face of Christ" (2 Cor 4:6).

Promise: "They prostrated themselves and did Him homage. Then they opened their coffers and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." -Mt 2:11

"WHAT IS TRUTH?" (see Jn 18:38) - One Bread, One Body, 1/2/2016

"WHAT IS TRUTH?" (see Jn 18:38)
"I have written you these things about those who try to deceive you." -1 John 2:26
"Who is the liar?" (1 Jn 2:22) Satan is "the father of lies...the truth is not in him" (Jn 8:44). Our secular culture believes the lies Satan is constantly feeding them:
* You won't go to hell; there is no hell. In fact there is no sin. If it feels good, do it.
* Sexual acts outside of marriage are not a sin; everyone does them.
* Marriage is not just between one man and one woman and "same-sex" marriage is legal, therefore, it's not sinful and actually it's right. In fact, you are hateful and intolerant to hold any other viewpoint.
* A fetus is just a blob of tissue - aborting it is no different than cutting off a mole from your skin.
* It's not a grave sin to skip Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. All of your friends only go on Christmas and Easter.
There are many similar deceptions, falsehoods, and outright lies.
St. Paul cried when thinking of the "savage wolves" who would deceive his Christian flock (Acts 20:29, 31). Countless martyrs died for the truths that the Church teaches. If these truths were not important, why would people give their lives to defend them? If sin was no big deal, why did Jesus die for our sins?
Jesus, "the Truth" (Jn 14:6), "came into the world...to testify to the truth" (Jn 18:37). Learn what the Catholic Church teaches, for it guards the truth. "The truth will set you free" (Jn 8:32).
Prayer: Father, may I act "only for the sake of the truth" (2 Cor 13:8) and thus make straight Your way in the world (Jn 1:23).
Promise: "He Himself made us a promise and the promise is no less than this: eternal life." -1 Jn 2:25
Praise: Sts. Basil and Gregory were hermits who were both led to become great teachers.

GOD WAS A BABY - One Bread, One Body, 1/1/2016
Happy Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God! Read our brochure entitled "Mother Mary"
http://www.presentationministries.com/brochures/MotherMary.asp
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, January 1, 2016, Mary, Mother of God
Numbers 6:22-27, Galatians 4:4-7, Psalm 67:2-3, 5-6, 8, Luke 2:16-21

GOD WAS A BABY
"When the designated time had come, God sent forth His Son born of a woman, born under the law, to deliver from the law those who were subjected to it, so that we might receive our status as adopted sons." -Galatians 4:4-5
We began the Christmas season celebrating Jesus' birth. On this eighth day of Christmas, we celebrate His conception, that is, the conception of God. To express the reality of His conception, God's Incarnation, we speak of Mary as the mother of God. This states that God really and permanently became a human being. He did not merely inhabit a human body or appear in the form of a human being. God actually became a human being.
God, in the womb of Mary, was a fetus about the size of a thumbnail. God nursed at Mary's breast. God talked "baby-talk." God had to be taught to walk. In addition to these physical realities of God's becoming human, God spiritually took on our weak human nature. He was born under the law (Gal 4:4). He was like us in all things but sin (Heb 4:15). He was tempted in every way that we are (Heb 4:15). The awesome God, the All-holy One, the great I AM, emptied Himself (see Phil 2:7) to the point that He had to struggle to overcome the little, petty temptations with which all human beings struggle.
Why did God so humiliate Himself and become man? "God is Love" (1 Jn 4:16).
Prayer: Father, through this world day of prayer for peace and justice, break through in China as You did in the former Soviet Union.
Promise: "Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart." -Lk 2:19
Praise: Mary, the mother of God, is also our mother. Praise You, Almighty God, for adopting us into Your glorious family! Alleluia.
