Pentecost Novena Day 2 - Saturday

Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
V. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created,
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of Your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MOST OBSCURE ARE THE MOST POWERFUL

"When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained to him God's new way in greater detail." -Acts 18:26

Priscilla and Aquila were kicked out of Rome because they were Jews (Acts 18:2). They were victims of religious persecution and became refugees. Priscilla and Aquila were tentmakers (Acts 18:3), and they had a Christian community based at their home (Rm 16:5). This husband and wife were nobodies by the world's standards. They were just two obscure people, oppressed by Rome's political machine and ignored by the world.

However, in God's eyes and therefore in reality, Priscilla and Aquila were among the most important people in history. They helped Paul recover from his failed mission to Athens (see Acts 17:32-18:3). They took home with them the great teacher Apollos and led him to faith in Jesus and life in the Spirit (see Acts 18:25-28). Paul said of Priscilla and Aquila that they "even risked their lives for the sake of mine. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them" (Rm 16:4).

Priscilla and Aquila lived their marriage and their life in the Holy Spirit. Wherever they went, they bore great fruit in whatever they did. The Lord continues to choose "the world's lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing" (1 Cor 1:28) to bear great fruit and renew the face of the earth in the power of the Holy Spirit (Ps 104:30). On this second day of the Pentecost Novena, surrender your life to the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, make my life like a grain of wheat which falls to the earth, dies, and bears much fruit (Jn 12:24).

Promise: "I give you My assurance, whatever you ask the Father, He will give you in My name." -Jn 16:23

Praise: James and Maria fled the persecution of their anti-Christian homeland to raise their children in the Faith.

ASK FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT

"I give you My assurance, whatever you ask the Father, He will give you in My name." -John 16:23

Today begins nine days of prayer, the Pentecost Novena, to ask God to prepare our hearts to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. God pours out the Holy Spirit beyond measure and without ration (Jn 3:34; Eph 3:20). Nevertheless, we need to prepare our hearts. We don't pray the Pentecost Novena because God needs persuading, but rather because we need docility to receive the Spirit.

Jesus revealed that our heavenly Father won't give us "a poisonous snake when [we ask] for a fish" (Mt 7:10), and that He is predisposed to give good things to those who ask Him (Mt 7:11). In Luke's parallel version of this passage, Jesus replaces the phrase "good things" with "the Holy Spirit" (Lk 11:13).

At the first Pentecost Novena, the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary gathered to pray communally and intensely for the promise of the Father, that is, the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14). Let us likewise gather with other Christians to pray earnestly to receive the Holy Spirit Whom God is already lavishing on us (Ti 3:6).

God wants to send the Holy Spirit to open our minds to the understanding of the Scriptures (Lk 24:45). Therefore, let's give God opportunities to bestow the Spirit on us by reading the Bible frequently during the Pentecost Novena.

Prayer: Father, pour out Your love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). Come, Holy Spirit!

Promise: "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced, for I am with you." -Acts 18:9-10

Praise: George stopped asking God for a job and began asking for the Spirit's gifts of patience and trust.

DO YOU WANT TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT? - One Bread, One Body, 5/5/2016

DO YOU WANT TO BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?

"I tell you truly: you will weep and mourn." -John 16:20

Tomorrow begins the Pentecost Novena, nine days of intense prayer to receive the Holy Spirit when He comes in a new way on Pentecost Sunday. The nine days of this Holy Spirit novena correspond closely to the nine months of a woman's pregnancy. The baby dwells within the mother during the pregnancy. Similarly, the Holy Spirit dwells within us (1 Cor 3:16).

As the baby grows within the mother's womb, the mother undergoes dramatic changes. Everything in her lifestyle changes. She wears a completely different set of clothes. She sleeps and eats differently. At times during the pregnancy, she may "weep and mourn" (Jn 16:20). As her child matures within her, she becomes more attuned to the baby's movements and rhythms. Her entire life is wrapped up in the welfare of the baby. In her final month, her main thought is: "Come, baby!"

As we approach the Holy Spirit novena with a like mindset, we may undergo dramatic changes in lifestyle. We may sleep differently, "rising early" (Mk 1:35) or staying up late (Lk 6:12) to pray. We may "weep and mourn" (Jn 16:20) in repentance and in sorrow for our sins and the sins of others (see Ez 9:4), all of which grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30). As our immersion in the Spirit progresses during the novena, we will become more attuned to the Spirit's movement and rhythms. Our entire life will become centered in whatever concerns the Holy Spirit. By the end of the novena, our hearts proclaim: "Come, Holy Spirit!" Do you want to be filled with the Spirit enough to immerse yourself in the Pentecost Novena?

Prayer: Jesus, may I empty myself as You did (Phil 2:7). Give me life in the Spirit to the full (Jn 10:10).

Promise: "Your grief will be turned into joy." -Jn 16:20

Praise: After finally completing a Life in the Spirit seminar, Mary was filled to overflowing with the joy and the gifts of the Spirit.

PRAYER OR FAILURE

"When they heard about the raising of the dead, some sneered." -Acts 17:32

"With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great respect was paid to them all" (Acts 4:33). Paul, the least of the apostles (1 Cor 15:9), also witnessed with power for the risen Christ except when he preached at Athens. There, while a few believed, others sneered at Paul (Acts 17:32), called him a "magpie" (Acts 17:18), and refused to take him seriously. At Athens, Paul seemed to have lost his power, his anointing from the Spirit.

Like Paul, we may see less power in our prayer, ministry, marriage, family, or witnessing. We're at the Athens in our lives. Others don't seem to take our Christian lives seriously. We feel like failures. We need the Spirit fanned into flame in our lives (2 Tm 1:6).

Friday, we begin nine days of prayer, just as did the disciples at the first Christian Pentecost. We must pray for our Confirmations to be renewed. We must stifle the flesh and be stirred up in the Spirit, instead of the opposite (Gal 5:17). If we don't pray to receive a new Pentecost now, we will continue in the futility of Athens. Mary, the other saints, and the angels are praying for us to receive the Holy Spirit. Let's join them and pray in these next days as never before. Jesus promises: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him" (Lk 11:13). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to pray (see Lk 11:1) for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Promise: "When He comes, however, being the Spirit of truth, He will guide you to all truth." -Jn 16:13

Praise: Although Patrick had been living in the Spirit for years, he prayed for a new outpouring and received new graces to minister in holiness and power.

"I WISH TO KNOW CHRIST" (Phil 3:10) - One Bread, One Body, 5/3/2016

"I WISH TO KNOW CHRIST" (Phil 3:10)

" 'Philip,' Jesus replied, 'after I have been with you all this time, you still do not know Me?' " -John 14:9

The apostle Philip lived, ate, drank, slept, and traveled with Jesus. After three years, Jesus had to conclude that Philip still did not know Him (Jn 14:9).

After three similar years, the apostle Peter admitted this same fact. Peter looked at Jesus standing bound and accused from across the courtyard and said: "I do not even know the Man!" (Mt 26:74) While it is true that Peter spoke words of cowardice, it's also important to realize that Peter really didn't know Jesus. He knew Jesus as Teacher, Master, and Miracle-Worker, but Peter did not know Jesus, the Suffering-Servant.

If the apostles didn't know Him, then how can we know Him? "The way we can be sure of our knowledge of Him is to keep His commandments" (1 Jn 2:3). If we tell ourselves, " 'I have known Him,' without keeping His commandments," we are self-deceived (1 Jn 2:4).

We need to know His commandments in order to obey them. Consequently, we need to spend time reading His Word and making it our home (Jn 8:31). In the words of St. Jerome: "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (Catechism, 133).

We will one day find ourselves telling Jesus all the ways in which we knew Him (Mt 7:22; Lk 13:26). Yet if we did not show that we have known Jesus by keeping His commandments, His assessment of us will be: "I never knew You" (Mt 7:23).

Prayer: Jesus, I wish to know You, Your Word, the power flowing from Your Resurrection, and how to share in Your sufferings by being formed into the pattern of Your death (Phil 3:10).

Promise: Jesus "rose on the third day...He was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve." -1 Cor 15:4-5

Praise: Because of his faithfulness, St. James was one of the first to encounter the risen Jesus.

I TOLD YOU SO... - One Bread, One Body, 5/2/2016

I TOLD YOU SO...

"I have told you..." -John 16:1, 4

Jesus mentions twice in today's Gospel reading that He told the apostles something in advance. First, Jesus warns them that He told them "all this" so that their faith may not be shaken under worldly pressure, and therefore they may not fall away (Jn 16:1). To what does "all this" refer? Jesus had just finished warning His apostles that worldly people would hate, harass, and disrespect them. Why? Jesus says it's because they bear witness to Him and because they don't belong to the worldly system which refuses to accept His lordship (Jn 15:18-20). Jesus knew His apostles would be tempted to give up under this pressure, and so He warned them in advance (Jn 16:1).

Initially, the apostles experience only threats and hatred. Jesus warns that the hatred will soon escalate into physical violence. He warns them that when being beaten and even when about to be martyred, they must remember He had forewarned them (Jn 16:4). This remembrance is more than just recalling Jesus' warning. They must constantly live in a state of remembrance. Jesus gave these commands during the Last Supper, the first Mass, in which He commanded: "Do this in remembrance of me" (see Lk 22:19).

Is the world putting pressure on you for witnessing to Jesus by your words, actions, and lifestyle? Keep your faith unshakable. Go to Mass frequently, even daily. Remember that "Christ suffered in the flesh; therefore arm yourselves with His same mentality" (1 Pt 4:1).

Prayer: "O Lord, look at the threats they are leveling against us. Grant to Your servants, even as [we] speak Your words, complete assurance by stretching forth Your hand in cures and signs and wonders to be worked in the name of Jesus" (Acts 4:29-30).

Promise: "The Lord loves His people." -Ps 149:4

Praise: St. Athanasius was exiled at least six times because he defended the divinity of Jesus.

PM eNewsletter 6th Sunday in Easter

May 1st Sixth Sunday of Easter

Jesus, grace us to really pray.

We need to pray with a fervor that shakes the houses where we are at.

Please send forth the power of Your Holy Spirit to fill us with the desire to pray, so
that we will really do just that.

Many times people ask us to pray for a need and we say we will, but either forget to do
it, or do it with out any real conviction of purpose.

Jesus, open up our hearts and fill us with a real desire to communicate with You.

You, Christ, are the answer to all the questions and problems.

Teach us, Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday TEACHING ABSTINENCES
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=5/1/2016

"The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in
everything, and remind you of all that I told you." -John 14:26

The Holy Spirit will teach us everything (Jn 14:26). To receive true, profound, practical
teaching on all that we need to know, we must be teachable, that is, docile. It's easy to
be teachable to the Spirit on some things, but it takes a miracle to be teachable in many
areas that the Spirit teaches. For example, the Holy Spirit taught the Gentile Christians
of the early Church about burdens "strictly necessary" for harmony with the Jewish
Christians (Acts 15:28). All of these burdens were about abstaining from certain practices
(Acts 15:29).

Are you docile enough to let the Spirit teach you about strictly necessary burdens of
abstinence? Would you let the Spirit teach you about abstaining from drinking alcohol,
coffee, or soda; abstaining from buying certain things; abstaining from eating sugar, salt,
or meat; or abstaining from TV and other forms of entertainment? Many of us want the Holy
Spirit to be completely "spiritual" and not to teach us about abstaining in ways which
would impact the practical details of our lifestyles.

Come Holy Spirit, the Teacher of abstinences and the Transformer of lifestyles!

Prayer: Father, instruct "the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit."

Promise: "The city had no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God gave it light, and its
lamp was the Lamb." -Rv 21:23

Praise: Praise You, risen Lord Jesus. You set aside the pleasures of this life and took up
Your cross to set us free. All glory and honor be Yours forever, alleluia!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

GOD'S MERCY

THE MIRACLE OF MERCY

In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to
love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to ... the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

WORKS OF MERCY

These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to
help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing
them. On such things we will be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that "the
Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; this will be a
way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to enter
more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God's
mercy" (Misericordiae Vultus).

NEVER SEPARATE

The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh
of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that
they too are poor and in need.
