THE BEATITUDES-BATTLE

"Then, raising His eyes to His disciples, [Jesus] said: 'Blest are you poor; the reign of God is yours.' " -Luke 6:20

Because "the Beatitudes are at the heart of Jesus' preaching" (Catechism, 1716), they are extremely important and therefore are vehemently opposed by the devil. Because the Beatitudes are "paradoxical promises" (1717), which "confront us with decisive choices concerning earthly goods" (1728), we naturally resist living the Beatitudes. Because the world, the flesh, and the devil hate the Beatitudes, they put extreme pressure on us to keep us from living the Beatitudes.

Luke foresaw this battle surrounding the Beatitudes. So he helps us obey the Beatitudes by:
* focusing on four of them. If we obey these four Beatitudes, we will also do the rest, which are named in Matthew's gospel.
* addressing the Beatitudes directly to us. Matthew's Beatitudes are addressed to "them"; Luke's are addressed to "you" (cf Mt 5:3ff with Lk 6:20ff).
* omitting the nuances of Matthew's Beatitudes, because we are tempted to turn nuances into loopholes.
* indicating that, if we don't do the Beatitudes, we will be cursed (see Lk 6:24-26).

Luke challenges us to live the Beatitudes no matter what. May we accept God's grace to do so.

Prayer: Father, by Your grace I will live the Beatitudes, even if it kills me.

Promise: "The world as we know it is passing away." -1 Cor 7:31

Praise: Cynthia experienced a new outpouring of God's grace when she chose to use her words to encourage others rather than to gossip about others.

SUING AND REAPING - One Bread, One Body, 9/6/2016

SUING AND REAPING

"Why, the very fact that you have lawsuits against one another is disastrous for you." -1 Corinthians 6:7

The Lord reveals in the Bible that it is disastrous for Christians to sue Christians. This results in injuring and cheating those who may have injured and cheated us (1 Cor 6:8). Suing other Christians can make us unholy and deprive us from inheriting God's kingdom, even though we have been "washed, consecrated, justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God" (1 Cor 6:11). Even if we have a just lawsuit, it's better to "put up with injustice" and let ourselves be cheated rather than sue a Christian (1 Cor 6:7; see also Mt 5:39ff). This applies to suing any Christians, including those as worldly as were the Corinthians.

Like the Corinthians, Christians today don't pay much attention to the Biblical prohibition against suing Christians. How many Christians do you know who refuse to take another person to court because that person is a Christian? Haven't we seen the Bible proven true as Christians today are subjected to disaster after disaster? Haven't we also seen masses of Christians become more and more unholy rather than holy? The Bible has once again been proven true, and the "better ideas" of our culture have again failed. The wisdom of God is not the same as the wisdom of this age (1 Cor 2:6ff). Live by God's wisdom. Live the Bible.

Prayer: Father, may I obey 1 Corinthians 6, and not be trapped by the blind spots of our culture (see 2 Cor 4:4).

Promise: "Indeed, the whole crowd was trying to touch Him because power went out from Him which cured all." -Lk 6:19

Praise: Forgiving a co-worker did not change Marsha's co-worker, but it did change Marsha.

(For a related teaching, order our leaflet, "The Bible on Money".)

THE YEAST OF THE BRETHREN - One Bread, One Body, 9/5/2016

THE YEAST OF THE BRETHREN

"Do you not know that a little yeast has its effect all through the dough?" -1 Corinthians 5:6

Those who commit sin are like yeast which has its effect all through the Christian community. Therefore, we must:
* overcome temptations to sin so as not to hurt ourselves and others,
* repent and go to Confession as soon as possible if we have sinned,
* forgive those who are sinning and are thereby hurting themselves and our community,
* be ministers of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18) by praying for those who have sinned (1 Jn 5:16), correcting them (Lk 17:3; Mt 18:15; Ez 3:18; 33:7), and leading them to repentance,
* be careful that we ourselves are not conditioned by the sinful (see Jude 23),
* rescue those being corrupted by the yeast of the sinful (see Jude 22), and
* give everything we have for God's kingdom so as to be yeast that raises the world (Mt 13:33).

"Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. Let us celebrate the feast not with the old yeast, that of corruption and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth" (1 Cor 5:7-8).

Prayer: Father, give me a great love for sinners and therefore a great hate for sin.

Promise: Jesus "looked around at them all and said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' The man did so and his hand was perfectly restored." -Lk 6:10

Praise: Anna listened to both brother and sister who held differing views and was a conduit for their reconciliation.

PM eNewsletter 23rd Sunday in ordinary time

Sept 4th Twenty third Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, Your church this week celebrates the birth of Mary, our
mother.

She is the start of the fulfillment of your plan of salvation for all
of us, Your children.

She was conceived without original sin, because You wanted her
to be the new perfect ark of the new covenent.

Jesus, help us to be vessels of faith for all those You put into our
lives.

Help us to show how to be Christ to others, by our love and
caring ways.

Thank You for Mom.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SUPREME AND EXTREME LOVE
http://www.presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=9/4/2016

"If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, his wife and his children, his
brothers and sisters, indeed his very self, he cannot be My disciple." -Luke 14:26, our transl.

A traditional hymn begins: "Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All, how can I love Thee as I ought?"
We love Jesus as we ought by loving Him with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, and
all our strength (Lk 10:27). When we give our "all" to Jesus, our relationship with Him is in
a class by itself (see Lk 14:26). When we love Jesus as we ought, we die to ourselves and take
up our crosses daily (Lk 14:27; 9:23). When we make Jesus our Lord, God, and All, we renounce
all our possessions (Lk 14:33). We are owned by God (see 1 Cor 6:19-20), and everything we
supposedly own belongs to Him.

To love Jesus as He ought to be loved seems to be extreme, and it is. Nevertheless, Jesus loved
us to the extremities of the cross. Consequently, to love Him rightly means to give Him nothing
less than everything. To give all to Jesus is the most and the least that we can do. He alone
died on the cross for love of each of us. He is God. He must be loved accordingly. By grace, we
can love Him as He ought to be loved. Love Him Who is Love (1 Jn 4:16).

Prayer: Father, may I "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and
depth of Christ's love, and experience this love" (Eph 3:18-19).

Promise: "Who ever knew Your counsel, except You had given Wisdom and sent Your Holy Spirit from
on high?" -Wis 9:17

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who holds "the keys of death and the nether world!" (Rv 1:18)

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE VITAL ROLE OF FAMILIES

"SOURCE OF COMFORT"

The word of God is not a series of abstract ideas but rather a source of comfort and
companionship for every family that experiences difficulties or sufferings. (22)

NEEDED VALUES

As Christians, we can hardly stop advocating marriage simply to avoid countering contemporary
sensibilities, or out of a desire to be fashionable or a sense of helplessness in the face of
human and moral failings. We would be depriving the world of values that we can and must offer. (35)

THE FAMILY'S STRENGTH

The strength of the family "lies in its capacity to love and to teach how to love. For all a
family's problems, it can always grow, beginning with love." (Relatio Finalis, 2015) (53)

"A GREAT CONTEST OF SUFFERING" (Heb 10:32) - One Bread, One Body, 9/3/2016

Saturday, September 3, 2016, Pope St. Gregory the Great

1 Corinthians 4:6-15, Psalm 145:17-21, Luke 6:1-5

"A GREAT CONTEST OF SUFFERING" (Heb 10:32)

"God has put us apostles at the end of the line." -1 Corinthians 4:9

Paul repeatedly published lists of the sufferings of Christians (see 2 Cor 6:4ff; 11:23ff). Paul described the apostles as "men doomed to die in the arena," "a spectacle to the universe," "fools on Christ's account," sneered at, "hungry and thirsty, poorly clad, roughly treated, wandering about homeless," insulted, persecuted, and slandered (1 Cor 4:9-13). Paul stated that, in effect, Christians should expect to be treated as the world's garbage; "that is the present state of affairs" (1 Cor 4:13).

Paul emphasized our sufferings with and for Christ:
* so that we would expect to suffer (1 Pt 4:1),
* to teach us that it is a privilege to suffer for Christ (Phil 1:29; Acts 5:41),
* to show us the joy there is in Christian suffering (Col 1:24; 1 Pt 4:13),
* to show us the power in redemptive suffering (see Jn 12:24), and
* so that we would want to suffer with and for Him (see Phil 3:10) more than we want to stay in our "comfort zone."

Christians, don't be afraid of suffering, or you will be afraid to live, die, and love. "Christ suffered for you in just this way and left you an example, to have you follow in His footsteps" (1 Pt 2:21).

Prayer: Father, may my love for You impel me to suffer for You (2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "May my mouth speak the praise of the Lord, and may all flesh bless His holy name forever and ever." -Ps 145:21

Praise: Pope St. Gregory's mother, Silvia, and two aunts, Tarsilla and Aemiliana, are also canonized saints.

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE - One Bread, One Body, 9/2/2016

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE

"They will surely fast in those days." -Luke 5:35

When we are baptized into the new life of Jesus and decide to live our Baptisms, "the old order has passed away; now all is new!" (2 Cor 5:17) Fasting, for example, becomes so new that the Lord uses our fasting to drive out the most entrenched demons (Mt 17:21, NAB), to initiate missionary outreaches (Acts 13:2-3), and to establish leaders for His Church (Acts 14:23). New Testament fasting is often frequent (see 2 Cor 11:27; 6:5) and very prolonged in imitation of Jesus' forty-day fast (see Mt 4:2). Considering the newness, intensity, and volatility of New Testament fasting, we would be foolish to fast in Jesus' name until we have accepted the new wineskin of new life in Christ.

So let us repent of any unfaithfulness to our baptismal promises and renew these promises. Let us live the "radical newness" of our Baptisms (Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10). Then let us fast accordingly and be part of the Spirit's renewing of the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).

Prayer: Father, teach me to fast as the early Church fasted.

Promise: "He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and manifest the intentions of hearts. At that time, everyone will receive his praise from God." -1 Cor 4:5

Praise: Linda saw a special empowerment in prayer on the days that she fasted.

(For a related teaching on The Secret of Fasting", view or download our leaflet or listen to or download our CD 46-1 or DVD 46 on our website or order our tape on audio AV 46-1 or video V-46.)
