POSSESSION - One Bread, One Body, 1/6/2017

Friday, January 6, 2017, St. André Bessette

1 John 5:5-13, Psalm 147:12-15, 19-20, Mark 1:7-11, or Luke 3:23-38

POSSESSION

"The testimony is this: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever possesses the Son possesses life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life." -1 John 5:11-12

St. John puts it very directly and bluntly. Jesus is Life (Jn 11:25; 14:6). If you want life, you need Jesus. "Whoever believes in the Son has life eternal" (Jn 3:36).

John even tells us why he writes to us: that we may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief we might have life in Jesus' name (see Jn 20:31). John tells us: "I have written this to you to make you realize that you possess eternal life - you who believe in the name of the Son of God" (1 Jn 5:13).

Do you possess Jesus? More importantly, does Jesus possess you? Have you given your life to Jesus? He died that you may have life, and life to the full (Jn 10:10). Live for Jesus now, and live with Him forever. Say with St. Paul: "I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Gal 2:19-20).

Prayer: Father, possess me and re-possess me. I am all Yours. "Keep me faithful to Your teaching and never let me be parted from You."

Promise: "Who, then, is conqueror of the world? The one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God." -1 Jn 5:5

Praise: St. André lived a humble life of faith in God and devotion to St. Joseph as a door-keeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal. Many people credit their healings to his prayers.

LOVE MEETS THE GREATEST NEED - One Bread, One Body, 1/5/2017

Thursday, January 5, 2017, St. John Neumann

1 John 3:11-21, Psalm 100:1-5, John 1:43-51
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/010517.cfm

LOVE MEETS THE GREATEST NEED

"I ask you, how can God's love survive in a man who has enough of this world's goods yet closes his heart to his brother when he sees him in need?" -1 John 3:17

John points out the obvious connection between love and need. If we love someone, we will want to provide that person's needs. Otherwise, our talk about love is mere lip service (Mt 15:8; Is 29:13) and not authentic (1 Jn 3:18).

The greatest need of the human person is to know Jesus deeply and personally (see Jn 17:3). Therefore, evangelization is "the highest service that the Christian can offer his brother" or sister (Orientale Lumen, Pope St. John Paul II, 14). Consequently, if we don't share Jesus with others, we either don't believe in Jesus or don't love people. Not to share Jesus is worse than refusing food to a starving person. If we don't share our faith in Jesus, it is questionable whether we love Jesus and have accepted His salvation. Blessed Pope Paul VI taught: "It would be useful if every Christian and every evangelizer were to pray about the following thought...Can we gain salvation if through negligence or fear or shame - what St. Paul called 'blushing for the Gospel' - or as a result of false ideas we fail to preach it?" (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 80)

This Christmas season and new year, let us invite others to come and see Jesus for themselves (Jn 1:46). Then we are loving them and giving them a Christ-centered Christmas rather than a Christ-less one. Then we are giving them Life.

Prayer: Father, let me give the greatest Gift - Jesus, the Lord, and God.

Promise: "The way we came to understand love was that He laid down His life for us; we too must lay down our lives for our brothers." -1 Jn 3:16

Praise: St. John Neumann, the first male American citizen to be declared a saint, is the patron saint of sick children and immigrants. He gave immigrants what they most needed, Christ Himself.

A CLOSE CALL

"When Jesus turned around and noticed them following Him, He asked them, 'What are you looking for?' " -John 1:38

Andrew and another disciple of John the Baptizer followed Jesus from a distance. Likewise, today there are many long-distance followers of Jesus. Are you close to the Lord? Or are your prayers long-distance calls?

Jesus has become a man. He even gives Himself to us in the Eucharist to be closer than close to us. He challenges us to look into our hearts and ask ourselves what we are looking for (Jn 1:38). Jesus, our Rabbi and Teacher (see Jn 1:38), will show us which of these desires are distancing us from Him. All we have to do is give ourselves the chance to hear the truth about our hearts from the Truth Himself (see Jn 14:6). We must stay with Jesus for an extended time. We must not run away when He speaks of changing what we're looking for, repenting of our sins, and taking up the cross daily (see Lk 9:23).

Jesus wants to give us a real "make-over," to change our names (see Jn 1:42), our looks, and what we're looking for. Jesus wants to draw us close to Himself. This Christmas and this new year, stay close with Jesus.

Prayer: Father, You drew close to me in the Incarnation of Your Son. May I draw close to You (Jas 4:8).

Promise: "It was to destroy the devil's works that the Son of God revealed Himself." -1 Jn 3:8

Praise: St. Elizabeth lived her forty-six years of life totally abandoned to God's will as she raised her five children and opened the first American Catholic school.

"WE ARE GOD'S CHILDREN NOW" (1 Jn 3:2)

"See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God!" -1 John 3:1

Something happened to St. John that needs to happen to all of us. Like many of us, John heard he was a child of God. But by the grace of the Holy Spirit, John realized radically what it means to be a child of God. The Spirit cried out in his heart: "Abba" (Gal 4:6; Rm 8:15). It was as if John had heard the voice of God the Father saying: "You are My beloved son, in whom I am well pleased" (see Mt 3:17). After that, John walked and ran through life shocked into life by love as he kept saying: "We are God's children now" (1 Jn 3:2).

On each of the remaining eight days of the Christmas season, ask the Spirit to teach you (Jn 14:26) and cry out in your heart: "Abba." Begin this year by asking the Holy Spirit to impress on you the privileged glory of being a child of God. "Dearly beloved, we are God's children now" (1 Jn 3:2).

Prayer: Jesus, You became a child of man so that I can be a child of God. I accept You and live as God's child (see Jn 1:12).

Promise: "When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He Who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit." -Jn 1:33

Praise: "The reason [Jesus] revealed Himself was to take away sins" (1 Jn 3:5). Praise the Most Holy Name of Jesus!

(Exult in the glory of being a child of God by reading the Bible every day. We have several series to help you. "Overview of the Bible "is six CDs starting with CD 10A-1 or audio tape AV 10A-1, "15 Minute Bible Teaching - New Testament" is forty CDs with detailed teaching as to chapter and verse starting with CD 700 or audio tape 700, "An Introduction to Each Book of the Bible" is thirty two CDs starting with CD 21-1 or audio tape AV 21-1.)

BODY PARTS

"Who are you?" -John 1:19

Throughout this year, we will be continually challenged with the question: "Who are you?" The correct answer is: "I am a part of the body of Christ" (see Rm 12:5; 1 Cor 12:13). Our true identity is based on our relationship with Christ (see Col 2:17).

An even better answer is to state the specific part of the body of Christ which you are. For example, John the Baptizer said he was a voice in Christ's body (Jn 1:23). You may be Christ's feet, hands, ears, or mind. It's ideal to know not only which part of Christ's body you are but also how the Lord primarily works through you. A voice can do several things - teach, sell, threaten, encourage, warn, etc. John knew that the main thing the Lord did through his voice was to cry out: "Make straight the way of the Lord!" (Jn 1:23)

Who are you? Who are you not? Which part of Christ's body are you? What is the primary way the Lord works through you? If, by the Spirit, you can answer these questions, you will know yourself as John the Baptizer knew himself. This will put you in the position to be used mightily by the Lord as John was. If you know who you are in Christ, this can be the greatest year of your life. Commit your life to Jesus and let the Spirit teach you (Jn 14:26).

Prayer: Father, may I know myself in Jesus and love myself in the Spirit.

Promise: "He Himself made us a promise and the promise is no less than this: eternal life." -1 Jn 2:25

Praise: At age 40, St. Basil was called from his hermitage to be a bishop and share his gifts.

PM eNewsletter Mary, Mother of God

January 1st, Mary, Mother of God.

Jesus, help us to really realize how you enlighten the Church to guide us into this new year.

Today's feast is a feast of love and trust.

Your love of Mary, our Mom, and her trust in your eternal plan.

You, through an angel, told her to name you Jesus and so you are the name above all names.

A name that causes the demons to tremble.

A name that can and will change lives.

Oh Christ, you gave us your Mom to be our Mom and you gave us your Holy Name to protect us
and keep us safe in a very troubled world.

Lord, let us reverence your name and honor your Mom, so that we can keep on the right path
that will lead us to the heavenly kingdom.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday FIRST BLOOD
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/1/2017

"When the eighth day arrived for His circumcision, the name Jesus was given the child." -Luke 2:21

On the eighth day of Christmas, we celebrate the feast of Mary, the Mother of God. On the eighth
day of His life, Jesus shed His blood for the first time as He endured circumcision. Mary, His
mother, would have been the one who nursed Jesus' wound, repeatedly washing off His blood during
the next few days as the infant Jesus healed.

This foreshadows Mary standing at the foot of Jesus' cross decades later as He would shed His
blood for our salvation. Many of you have seen the statue of the Pieta in which Mother Mary holds
the dead, bloody body of her Son Jesus. Even after He died, Mary treasured Jesus' body by cleaning
off His blood. During her entire life, Mary was devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus. This was
dramatically portrayed in the movie The Passion of the Christ and in the book by Anne Catherine
Emmerich, The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Imitate Mother Mary. Devote yourself to the Precious Blood of Jesus in 2017. Receive the
eucharistic Jesus in Mass as often as possible, even daily. Commit yourself to frequent Eucharistic
adoration. "O, the blood of Jesus. It must not suffer loss."

Prayer: Father, "let [Jesus'] blood be on us and on our children" (Mt 27:25).

Promise: "You are no longer a slave but a son! And the fact that you are a son makes you an heir,
by God's design." -Gal 4:7

Praise: Praise You, risen Lord Jesus, for making all things new (Rv 21:5). Be praised and glorified
in this new year.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2016-12.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

WELCOME CHILDREN, MIGRANTS

"SURE PATH"

This phrase traces the sure path which leads to God: it begins with the smallest and, through the
grace of our Savior, it grows into the practice of welcoming others.

"NECESSARY CONDITION"

To be welcoming is a necessary condition for making this journey a concrete reality: God made
Himself one of us. In Jesus God became a child, and the openness of faith to God, which nourishes
hope, is expressed in loving proximity to the smallest and the weakest.

"I FEEL COMPELLED"

... I feel compelled to draw attention to the reality of child migrants, especially the ones who
are alone. .. I ask everyone to take care of the young ... I ask everyone to help those who ...
are forced to live far.

FIRST BLOOD

"When the eighth day arrived for His circumcision, the name Jesus was given the child." -Luke 2:21

On the eighth day of Christmas, we celebrate the feast of Mary, the Mother of God. On the eighth day of His life, Jesus shed His blood for the first time as He endured circumcision. Mary, His mother, would have been the one who nursed Jesus' wound, repeatedly washing off His blood during the next few days as the infant Jesus healed.

This foreshadows Mary standing at the foot of Jesus' cross decades later as He would shed His blood for our salvation. Many of you have seen the statue of the Pieta in which Mother Mary holds the dead, bloody body of her Son Jesus. Even after He died, Mary treasured Jesus' body by cleaning off His blood. During her entire life, Mary was devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus. This was dramatically portrayed in the movie The Passion of the Christ and in the book by Anne Catherine Emmerich, The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Imitate Mother Mary. Devote yourself to the Precious Blood of Jesus in 2017. Receive the eucharistic Jesus in Mass as often as possible, even daily. Commit yourself to frequent Eucharistic adoration. "O, the blood of Jesus. It must not suffer loss."

Prayer: Father, "let [Jesus'] blood be on us and on our children" (Mt 27:25).

Promise: "You are no longer a slave but a son! And the fact that you are a son makes you an heir, by God's design." -Gal 4:7

Praise: Praise You, risen Lord Jesus, for making all things new (Rv 21:5). Be praised and glorified in this new year.
