THE TEMPTATION TO DO GOOD

"This will permit us to concentrate on prayer and the ministry of the word." -Acts 6:4

There is no chaining the Word of God (2 Tm 2:9), but the messengers of God's Word can be chained. We are often chained through sin, selfishness, or fear. However, we can be chained in more subtle ways. For example, the devil tried to chain the apostles by making them think they needed to cut back temporarily on prayer and the ministry of the Word to deal with a disagreement in the early Church (Acts 6:2ff). He tempted them by encouraging them to do a good and needed work. Moreover, the devil didn't tell them to completely quit their ministry of the Word but only to cut back just for a little while. However, once we deviate even slightly from our God-given call (even if we do it by performing good deeds), we are no longer doing God's will. When we give an inch even for a moment, our inch turns into miles which can last forever.

Therefore:
* Do God's deeds, not good deeds.
* Do nothing but His will.
* Don't interrupt or postpone God's work. Do it now.
* Don't let up at all in proclaiming His Word in season and out of season (2 Tm 4:2).
Prayer: Father, by Your grace I will live my vocation to the full.

Promise: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and faith in Me." -Jn 14:1

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, our Brother, for raising us to new life in You. Thanks be to God!

LIFE IN THE WORD - One Bread, One Body, 5/13/2017

Saturday, May 13, 2017, Our Lady of Fatima

Acts 13:44-52, Psalm 98:1-4, John 14:7-14
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051317.cfm

LIFE IN THE WORD

"The word of the Lord was carried throughout that area." -Acts 13:49

The Word of the Lord is being carried at this moment throughout your area and throughout the world. However, if there is unrepentant sin in your life, you will be manipulated into rejecting and opposing God's Word (see Acts 13:45-46). But if you repent, you will believe in God's Word, delight in it, and respond to it with praise (Acts 13:48). This may result in your being persecuted by those who reject God's Word. Yet you will "be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit" (Acts 13:52), for you have been privileged not only to believe in God's Word but also to suffer for it (see Phil 1:29). In your suffering for accepting God's Word, the Holy Spirit will rest on you (1 Pt 4:14), and you will do greater works than Jesus did (Jn 14:12), for anything you ask in His name He will do (Jn 14:14).

When we accept God's Word, we enter into a new way of life. In God's Word, we move from grace to grace (see Jn 1:16). By living in God's Word, we walk in the Truth Who sets us free (Jn 8:31-32). Accept, abide in, and carry God's Word.

Prayer: Father, through the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, may I tremble at Your Word (Is 66:2).

Promise: "All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God." -Ps 98:3

Praise: Our Lady of Fatima visited three children and with them changed the world.

SUBPOENAED AS A WITNESS - One Bread, One Body, 5/12/2017

Friday, May 12, 2017, Sts. Nereus & Achilleus, St. Pancras

Acts 13:26-33, Psalm 2:6-11, John 14:1-6

SUBPOENAED AS A WITNESS

"These are His witnesses now before the people." -Acts 13:31

Throughout Acts of the Apostles, the Lord repeatedly commands us to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8; 2:32; 3:15; 10:39; 13:31). Now that we are more than halfway through the Easter season, it is appropriate to ask ourselves whether we have obeyed the Lord's command to be His witnesses. Hopefully, we have done this throughout our Christian lives and even more intensely in this Easter season.

If you were subpoenaed as a witness by a human court, would you obey? If not, you would face contempt of court charges. Each Christian is subpoenaed daily and even more frequently to witness for Jesus. If we refuse to obey, we face not contempt of court charges but contempt of God charges. We must obey and witness.

The Lord insists on this because He loves us so much that He died on the cross for us and He wants all to be saved by His death (see 1 Tm 2:4). To be saved, we must accept Jesus as our Savior, Lord, and God. Those who have already done this are called to witness for Jesus and invite others to accept Jesus. Witnessing for Jesus is an essential part of God's plan. If we love Jesus and people, we must witness for Jesus.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me the power to witness for Jesus (Acts 1:8).

Promise: "No one comes to the Father but through Me." -Jn 14:6

Praise: St. Pancras was baptized at age fourteen and beheaded for being a Christian.

DOING THE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

"There John left them and returned to Jerusalem." -Acts 13:13

John Mark had accompanied Barnabas and Saul on a relief mission to help the starving Judean Christians (Acts 12:25). Next, John Mark accompanied Barnabas and Saul on the first evangelistic mission of the Church (Acts 13:5). However, John Mark dropped out of that mission (Acts 13:13).

There's a big difference between a relief mission and an evangelistic mission. Many of us have been on relief missions. We have given our time, energy, and money to help the poor, the suffering, and the victims of tragedies. However, only a few people have gone on evangelistic missions. Relief missions are very important and often are a matter of life and death. Evangelistic missions, however, are of supreme importance and are a matter of eternal life and death. Usually, we need a much stronger love to go on an evangelistic mission than a relief mission. We will often fight a much more severe spiritual battle in an evangelistic mission than in almost any other activity.

We can criticize John Mark for leaving the first Christian evangelistic mission, but many of us have never quit because we've never started. If we have dropped out, we ought to follow Mark's lead, repent, and go back on mission. "Once you know all these things, blest will you be if you put them into practice" (Jn 13:17).

Prayer: Father, may I not stop short of Your full will.

Promise: "I solemnly assure you, he who accepts anyone I send accepts Me, and in accepting Me accepts Him Who sent Me." -Jn 13:20

THE MISSION OF LOVE

"May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear Him!" -Psalm 67:8

Without believing in Jesus, we remain in the dark (Jn 12:46). If we don't accept Jesus' words, we are already under judgment, and we deprive ourselves of eternal life (Jn 12:47). If we don't give our lives to Jesus, we continue to be "dead because of [our] sins and offenses" (Eph 2:1). Without Jesus, there is no hope (see Eph 2:12).

Therefore, let us pray for "the word of the Lord" to continue "to spread and increase" (Acts 12:24). Let us pray and fast together so that each one of us will be a witness and missionary for Jesus (see Acts 13:2-3). Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to speak to our local community to set apart missionaries to take the gospel of Jesus to all the nations (see Acts 13:2). May we back these missionaries with daily prayer, persevering service, and sacrificial giving.

Because we love Jesus and people, because life without Jesus is a preview of hell, and because life in Jesus is a taste of heaven, we all must be missionaries and every church must be missionary. Jesus' last command to us before His Ascension was: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations" (Mt 28:19). In love, go now and make disciples.

Prayer: Lord, "may Your way be known upon earth; among all nations, Your salvation" (Ps 67:3).

Promise: "I have come to the world as its light, to keep anyone who believes in Me from remaining in the dark." -Jn 12:46

Praise: St. Damien loved and was loved by the "unlovable," lepers exiled to a remote colony in Hawaii.

"CAUSE FOR REJOICING" (1 Pt 1:6) - One Bread, One Body, 5/9/2017

Acts 11:19-26, Psalm 87:1-7, John 10:22-30

"CAUSE FOR REJOICING" (1 Pt 1:6)

"He rejoiced to see the evidence of God's favor." -Acts 11:23

I was just handed several letters from readers of One Bread, One Body (OBOB). Each letter was an encouragement from a faithful reader who uses OBOB during prayer time, and each person expressed their gratitude, encouragement, and love. These readers are like Barnabas, offering encouragement for us to remain firm in our commitment to produce OBOB (see Acts 11:23).

These letters cause us to rejoice as we "see the evidence of God's favor" (Acts 11:23). Many of you who read OBOB have committed yourselves daily to prayer and Scripture reading. You attend Mass as often as possible and when unable to attend Mass, you follow it on TV or radio. You joyfully spread God's Word and witness to Jesus from the abundant love of your hearts (Lk 6:45). One writer exclaims: "I love to spread the Word whenever I get the chance."

We give thanks to God for you (1 Thes 1:2; Col 1:3; Phil 1:3) and rejoice in your fruitfulness for the Lord. In love, we "beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus...to make still greater progress" (1 Thes 4:1). You are doing great things; in Jesus you can do greater things than ever before (Jn 14:12). Continue to "give...evidence" of your love and fruitfulness for Jesus (see Lk 3:8).

Prayer: Father, thank You for the cloud of witnesses You surround us with (Heb 12:1). "How wonderfully" we "cherish the holy ones" who love You (Ps 16:3).

Promise: "My sheep hear My voice. I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life." -Jn 10:27-28

Praise: Pete has been studying Scripture daily for over thirty years. He teaches the Bible each week using several different forums.

THE "DIED-FOR" - One Bread, One Body, 5/8/2017

Monday, May 8, 2017

Acts 11:1-18, Psalm 42:2-3; 43:3-4, John 10:11-18

THE "DIED-FOR"

"The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." -John 10:11

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, came that we "might have life more abundantly" (see Jn 10:10, RNAB). Paradoxically, life is given through death (see Jn 12:24). To give life to His sheep, Jesus the Good Shepherd laid down His life for His sheep (Jn 10:11, 15, 17). "There is no greater love than this: to lay down one's life" (Jn 15:13). "It is rare that anyone should lay down his life for a just man, though it is barely possible that for a good man someone may have the courage to die. It is precisely in this that God proves His love for us: that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Rm 5:7-8).

We, the "died-for," can't help but ask the question: "How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me?" (Ps 116:12) "He died for all so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him Who for their sakes died and was raised up" (2 Cor 5:15). Lay down your life in love for the crucified and risen Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, You gave Your life for me. I give my life for You.

Promise: "As I began to address them the Holy Spirit came upon them, just as It had upon us at the beginning." -Acts 11:15

Praise: Norma was afraid to ask Ron, her husband, to become a Catholic. Her priest, Father Ralph, simply asked Ron if he wanted to join the Church. Ron replied that he had been wanting to join. Ron grew in his faith and received Jesus daily in the Eucharist for many years.
