THE WORST
"The result is that the last state of the man is worse than the first." —Luke 11:26

The worst state possible for a human being is not being an atheist in the grip of the devil but being a fallen-away Christian, a backslider, a lukewarm believer. Jesus prefers that a person be an atheist rather than a lukewarm Christian (see Rv 3:15). Lukewarmness nauseates Jesus (Rv 3:16). “When men have fled a polluted world by recognizing the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then are caught up and overcome in pollution once more, their last condition is worse than their first” (2 Pt 2:20).

The writer of Hebrews also indicates Jesus’ revulsion towards lukewarmness: “When men have once been enlightened and have tasted the heavenly gift and become sharers in the Holy Spirit, when they have tasted the good word of God and powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to make them repent again, since they are crucifying the Son of God for themselves and holding Him up to contempt” (Heb 6:4-6).

Although this seems to give little hope of repentance, Jesus does call the lukewarm to repent. He commands: “Repent! Here I stand, knocking at the door. If anyone hears Me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with him, and he with Me” (Rv 3:19-20). Let’s repent of anything less than a 100% commitment to the Lord. Let us obey the first and greatest commandment, and love the Lord with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds (Lk 10:27).

Prayer: Jesus, I'm all Yours.

Promise: Jesus, I'm all Yours.

Praise: St. John lived out his priestly vocation serving in hospitals and prisons. He is an inspiration for chaplains, having died while tending to those stricken by the plague. He founded the first society of priests dedicated to the foreign missions.

PERSIST IN PRAYER
"He will do so because of his persistence." —Luke 11:8

Today’s Gospel is God’s encouragement, and even His command, to be persistent. Jesus teaches us: “I tell you, even though he does not get up and take care of the man because of friendship, he will do so because of his persistence” (Lk 11:8).

Do you parents remember when your children were infants, and then toddlers? Is there anything more persistent than a baby who wants to nurse? As parents, we woke up at midnight to nurse, change, feed, and hold them. Most of the time it was out of love, but sometimes, as today’s parable says, it was not out of friendship, but only because of the child’s persistence, which wore us down.

Our intercessory prayers and petitions are to be persistent, but not for the purpose of breaking down God so we get what we request. God is never worn down. He loves us so deeply. It is He Who tells us to ask, seek, knock (Mt 7:7). God is the One Who is persistent in loving us. He is the Parent we tried to be with our children. So in trust and obedience, we persist in intercessory prayer. God is far from being weary of our prayer. He is more concerned with our faith, and that we would lose hope and stop praying. Therefore, continue to ask, knock, seek, and persist, despite what seems to be no answer from the Lord. Never lose faith in God’s desire to hear and answer our prayer (see Mt 6:6).

Prayer: "Lord, teach us to pray" (Lk 11:1).

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him." —Lk 11:13

Praise: Albert prayed for years that his grandmother would come back into the Church. She came back on her deathbed.

LOVE TO PRAY
"Lord, teach us to pray." —Luke 11:1

Do you have a lot to learn about prayer? Do you want to learn to pray more deeply? How much time and energy are you willing to spend in learning to pray better? If we love the Lord, we should want to learn to pray better, for prayer is communicating with the One Who is the Love of our lives (see 1 Jn 4:16). However, many Christians don’t pray very much and neglect to take any practical means to learn to pray. This usually indicates a lack of love for the Lord.

Love is the basis of prayer. Where there is true love, we always find prayer and the desire to learn to pray better. Consequently, before asking Jesus to teach us to pray, we should ask Him to teach us to love. When we open our hearts to receive His love, we will pray. Love always prays.

We speak and pray from the abundance of our hearts (see Lk 6:45). So, prayer-problems are heart-problems, which are love-problems. To begin to learn to pray, ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus together with the Father to stir into flame the fire of the Spirit in your heart (2 Tm 1:6-7). The Spirit will then pour out love in your heart (Rm 5:5), and this love will overflow into prayer.

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to love to pray.

Promise: "Praise the Lord, all You nations; glorify Him, all you peoples!" —Ps 117:1

Praise: Pope St. Pius established the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary in 1573. Pope Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716. "Mother Mary, pray for us."

EXTREME UNCTION
"I went to extremes." —Galatians 1:13

Paul “went to extremes in persecuting the Church of God and tried to destroy it” (Gal 1:13). He had an “excess of zeal” (Gal 1:14), which means he was extremely extreme. He described himself  “as an extreme case” (1 Tm 1:16). Paul was an extremist.

Many of you reading this are also extremists. You may tend to go to extremes in eating, working, buying, worrying, fearing, drinking, watching TV or staring at your handheld electronic device. Although the current direction of your extremism may be a curse, it can become a blessing. If, like Paul by God’s grace, you can direct your extremism away from self-indulgence, self-destruction, and opposition to God’s work, you will be able to use your extremism for the building of God’s kingdom.

Jesus was and is an Extremist. He was so extreme that He became a Man and died on the cross because of love for us (see Phil 2:7-8). He commands us to love Him with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, and all our strength (Lk 10:27). What’s more extreme than “all”? He gives us His Body and Blood under the appearance of bread and wine. Did you ever hear anything so far-out, so extreme?

Jesus loves us extremely. What more can He do? We must go to extremes to love Him in return.

Prayer: Father, You went to extremes in giving Your Son for our salvation. I love and thank You.

Promise: Mary "seated herself at the Lord's feet and listened to His words." —Lk 10:39

Praise: Pope Urban II, during his youth, was a student of St. Bruno. After Urban ascended to the papacy, he summoned his former teacher to Rome. Bruno became the Pope's Confessor. He wrote "Almighty God will inscribe in your hearts with His finger not only His love but also the knowledge of His holy law."

WALK THE LINE
"A Samaritan who was journeying along came on him..." —Luke 10:33

In today’s first reading, St. Paul allows no compromise with the Gospel that he preached to the new Christians in Galatia. The pure, complete Gospel must be presented. No compromise is allowed; the gospel of Christ cannot be “watered down” in any way. Otherwise, that person deserves a curse; Paul even repeats it twice for emphasis (Gal 1:8-9). Yet, in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus presents two people who are pure doctrinally and one man who is not. The hero of Jesus’ parable is the one who is doctrinally impure, yet who acted with the heart of the gospel, and not the two who held to the proper doctrine, but did not act with the charity demanded by the gospel of Christ.

Reading today’s two passages together, the Church tells us that both our doctrine and our lifestyle are to be pure, completely in line with the gospel. We are to strive for purity of faith and charity of action. This is a difficult line to walk. Yet the Lord pours out the Holy Spirit so that we will have the abundance of grace needed to act in spirit, truth, and charity. Jesus sets a high standard, yet He lived it Himself and sent us the Holy Spirit so that we can “go and do the same” (Lk 10:37).

Study your faith, especially as presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Scriptures. Ask the Lord for the grace to be able to fully receive the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, help me to believe the gospel in truth. Overshadow me with the Holy Spirit so that I can pour out my life in Your charity. Open my eyes to see all those in my path who need Your loving help.

Promise: "There is no other [gospel]." —Gal 1:7

Praise: Blessed Francis Xavier was born in Germany. He preached in English and German throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. He trained Redemptorist seminary students. President Lincoln honored his appeal to not draft his students into the Civil War.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday IN LOVE WITH THE MOST REJECTED PERSON
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-10-4-en

"The Stone Which the builders rejected has become the Keystone of the structure. It was the Lord Who did this,
and we find it marvelous to behold." -Matthew 21:42; Psalm 118:22

Think of the person whom you love the most. Possibly this is your spouse, mother, father, child, brother,
sister, or friend. You love this person so much that you would even give up your life for him or her. Now
imagine seeing this person, whom you love so much, being cruelly rejected. This would break your heart, and
you would try to console the one you love by professing your love for him or her.

This situation which I have just described is the circumstance in which Christians live. We disciples of Jesus
love Jesus with all our hearts (see Mt 22:37). He is the Joy and Love of our lives. We love Him more than we
love anyone else. We love Him more than life. Jesus, our Love and Life, is the most rejected Person Who has
ever lived. By our sins, He is cruelly rejected millions of times each day. In a certain way, Jesus continues
to be crucified and held up to contempt (Heb 6:6). He continues to be "the Stone Which the builders rejected"
(Mt 21:42).

Responding in love to the continually rejected Jesus, let us reject Satan, his works, and his promises (rather
than reject Jesus). Let us love Jesus so much that we are rejected with Him.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to lead me to renew my baptismal promises more deeply than ever before.

Promise: "Dismiss all anxiety from your minds. Present your needs to God in every form of prayer and in
petitions full of gratitude." -Phil 4:6

Praise: "With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great respect was
paid to them all" (Acts 4:33). Praise You, Jesus!

The Catholic Church designates October as the Month of the Holy Rosary. During this month the faithful
venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary especially under her title of Our Lady of the Rosary, and make special effort
to honor the Holy Rosary with group recitations and rosary processions. St. Dominic de Guzman, the founder of
the Order of Preachers, is the saint to whom Our Lady famously appeared and gave the prayers of the Holy Rosary
to assist him as a spiritual weapon in combating heresy and leading souls back to the one, true Catholic faith.
