WALKING THE LAW OF THE HEART
"I will walk at liberty, because I seek Your precepts." —Psalm 119:45

When Scripture refers to the law, it is speaking of much of the Old Testament. St. Paul argues strongly that grace is what is critical rather than the law. It’s not that the law does not matter; the law simply pales in comparison to the absolute greatness of Jesus Christ and the grace He offers to each of us. The law deals with the external but, as the Gospel says, God is concerned with the internals, our heart.

The law serves a good purpose, establishing the basis for a relationship between God and man. Jesus Himself said that He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Mt 5:17). With the Psalmist, let us love the law of the Lord. Grace has not nullified the law; Jesus stated clearly that if we love Him, we will keep His commands, that is, His law (Jn 15:10).

Therefore, conform your hearts and minds to the grace of Jesus Christ. “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22), Who will guide you to the law of the Spirit (2 Cor 3:6). Obey His commands by the power of His sanctifying grace and by loving the Lord.

Prayer: Father, enable me to walk in Your presence in my daily life (see Ps 27:13).

Promise: "If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." —Lk 11:41

Praise: As difficult as it can be, Nathan is committed to living a holy lifestyle and so he no longer associates with the people who lead him into temptation to sin.

FREE AT LAST?
"It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time."—Galatians 5:1

It was for liberty from sin that Christ set us free (Gal 5:1). Once we are set free from sin through Baptism, conversion, and the sacrament of Confession, we become a target for the devil and his kingdom of darkness. Satan and his demons constantly appeal to our old human nature that was drowned in the waters of Baptism. That human nature, inherited through original sin, is constantly seeking selfish pleasures. Scripture demonstrates that it was easier for God to physically get Israel out of Egypt than it was to get Egypt out of the hearts of the Israelites. In the desert, out of Egypt, the Israelites kept longing for the “benefits” of slavery, such as tasty food and meat (Ex 16:2-3).

Thus, St. Paul commands us to not return to the slavery of sin and a pleasure-seeking lifestyle (Gal 5:1). Scripture teaches that the worst state possible for a human being is to believe in Christ, but then to turn our backs on Him to return to a life of sin (Lk 11:24-26; 2 Pt 2:19-20). Therefore, “forget not all His benefits” (Ps 103:2), particularly the freedom from the slavery of sin. Beg Jesus for the grace to desire to remain in His love (Jn 15:9).

Prayer: Jesus, nail me to the cross with You, so that I may never leave You for earthly pleasures or to avoid suffering.

Promise: "He raises up the lowly from the dust." —Ps 113:7

Praise: Fred is never embarrassed to tell his coworkers that he follows Jesus and he notices that they respect him for it.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday FISHIN' HOLE
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-10-11-en

"Invite to the wedding anyone you come upon." -Matthew 22:9

God wants His house to be full for His heavenly banquet (Lk 14:23). His strategy for filling His house is to
send His servants all over His kingdom, especially to the byroads (Mt 22:9), alleys (Lk 14:21), and other
unlikely places. Thus, God's banquet will only be filled if His servants "come upon" (Mt 22:9) people that
are hard to locate.

Jesus understands this dilemma. That's why He specifically calls His servants "fishers of men" (Mt 4:19).
Any fisherman who wants to bring home a catch knows that he will probably not easily "come upon" large
numbers of fish; rather, he must learn "how to cope with every circumstance" (Phil 4:12). He knows that he
must study the habits of the fish and spend much time, effort, and frustration learning their favorite
feeding places and times. A leisurely midday fishing trip might be convenient for the fisherman, but he will
likely bring home an empty boat. His best catch might come before dawn, in freezing weather, in dangerous
waters, or after many unsuccessful attempts. The main question is: Will the fisherman take the trouble to
"come upon" the fish?

Politicians, salespeople, telemarketers, and researchers understand this concept clearly. Their daring
boldness in reaching the unreachable leads to success in their ventures. Followers of Jesus, "open your eyes
and see! The fields are shining for harvest!" (Jn 4:35) There's a house to be filled. Bring them in (Lk 14:21).

Prayer: Father, I will take the appropriate initiative to reach the people You want me to come upon (Lk 16:8).

Promise: "My God in turn will supply your needs fully, in a way worthy of His magnificent riches in Christ
Jesus." -Phil 4:19

Praise: "Because of His affliction He shall see the light in fullness of days" (Is 53:11). Risen Jesus, You
are the Light of the World leading us to salvation!

FISHIN' HOLE
"Invite to the wedding anyone you come upon." —Matthew 22:9

God wants His house to be full for His heavenly banquet (Lk 14:23). BLESSED AMONG BLESSINGS
"Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." —Luke 11:28

Physical relationships can be very fulfilling for human beings. For example, a married couple’s physical relationship expressed in sexual intercourse can be an exceptional blessing. The physical relationship of a mother with the child she conceives, births, and nurtures is also one of the greatest blessings in life. Therefore, a woman cried out to Jesus: “Blest is the womb that bore You and the breasts that nursed You!” (Lk 11:27) However, Jesus responded: “Rather...blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it” (Lk 11:28). As wonderful as physical relationships can be, even as wondrous as was Mary’s physical relationship with Jesus, it is more blest to hear God’s Word and keep it.

Living God’s Word is such a blessing that when Jeremiah found God’s words, he devoured them (Jer 15:16). They became the joy and happiness of his heart (Jer 15:16). The psalmist delighted in obeying God’s Word (Ps 40:9). God’s Word was more precious to him “than thousands of gold and silver pieces” (Ps 119:72). When Ezra proclaimed God’s Word to the people, they rejoiced and celebrated for eight days (Neh 8:9-10, 17-18). Jesus spent the afternoon and evening of His Resurrection day by opening the hearts and minds of two disciples and the apostles to the Scriptures (see Lk 24:27, 32, 45). There is something very blest about hearing and doing God’s Word. Get blest.

Prayer: Father, I commit myself by Your grace to pray and read the Bible every day for the rest of my life.

Promise: "If you belong to Christ you are the descendants of Abraham, which means you inherit all that was promised." —Gal 3:29

Praise: Louise has spent time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament every week for over twenty years.

THE WORST
"The result is that the last state of the man is worse than the first." —Luke 11:26

The worst state possible for a human being is not being an atheist in the grip of the devil but being a fallen-away Christian, a backslider, a lukewarm believer. Jesus prefers that a person be an atheist rather than a lukewarm Christian (see Rv 3:15). Lukewarmness nauseates Jesus (Rv 3:16). “When men have fled a polluted world by recognizing the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then are caught up and overcome in pollution once more, their last condition is worse than their first” (2 Pt 2:20).

The writer of Hebrews also indicates Jesus’ revulsion towards lukewarmness: “When men have once been enlightened and have tasted the heavenly gift and become sharers in the Holy Spirit, when they have tasted the good word of God and powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to make them repent again, since they are crucifying the Son of God for themselves and holding Him up to contempt” (Heb 6:4-6).

Although this seems to give little hope of repentance, Jesus does call the lukewarm to repent. He commands: “Repent! Here I stand, knocking at the door. If anyone hears Me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with him, and he with Me” (Rv 3:19-20). Let’s repent of anything less than a 100% commitment to the Lord. Let us obey the first and greatest commandment, and love the Lord with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds (Lk 10:27).

Prayer: Jesus, I'm all Yours.

Promise: Jesus, I'm all Yours.

Praise: St. John lived out his priestly vocation serving in hospitals and prisons. He is an inspiration for chaplains, having died while tending to those stricken by the plague. He founded the first society of priests dedicated to the foreign missions.

PERSIST IN PRAYER
"He will do so because of his persistence." —Luke 11:8

Today’s Gospel is God’s encouragement, and even His command, to be persistent. Jesus teaches us: “I tell you, even though he does not get up and take care of the man because of friendship, he will do so because of his persistence” (Lk 11:8).

Do you parents remember when your children were infants, and then toddlers? Is there anything more persistent than a baby who wants to nurse? As parents, we woke up at midnight to nurse, change, feed, and hold them. Most of the time it was out of love, but sometimes, as today’s parable says, it was not out of friendship, but only because of the child’s persistence, which wore us down.

Our intercessory prayers and petitions are to be persistent, but not for the purpose of breaking down God so we get what we request. God is never worn down. He loves us so deeply. It is He Who tells us to ask, seek, knock (Mt 7:7). God is the One Who is persistent in loving us. He is the Parent we tried to be with our children. So in trust and obedience, we persist in intercessory prayer. God is far from being weary of our prayer. He is more concerned with our faith, and that we would lose hope and stop praying. Therefore, continue to ask, knock, seek, and persist, despite what seems to be no answer from the Lord. Never lose faith in God’s desire to hear and answer our prayer (see Mt 6:6).

Prayer: "Lord, teach us to pray" (Lk 11:1).

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him." —Lk 11:13
