NOT GOOD, NOT BETTER, BUT BEST
"Well done! You are an industrious and reliable servant. Since you were dependable in a small matter I will put you in charge of larger affairs. Come, share your master's joy!" -Matthew 25:21
The Lord doesn't call us to do good. "No one is good but God alone" (Mk 10:18). He doesn't call us to do better - better than others or even better than before. The Lord doesn't like to compare. He simply wants us to do our best. Our best may not be better. It may not even be that good. Nonetheless, the Lord is pleased with our best. It is a sacrifice acceptable to Him.
We all can do our best any time we want to. Our best doesn't require ability, skill, training, or even maturity. A little boy can do his best. A feeble elderly man can do his best. We can always do our best. It's just a matter of trying our best. The Lord is not concerned with how many talents we start with (Mt 25:15). He just wants us to do our best with what we've got. Ten talents are pleasing to Him if they're our best. A thousand talents are displeasing if they're not our best.
So "whatever you do, work at it with your whole being. Do it for the Lord rather than for men" (Col 3:23). To do our best, we must give our all. This is the first commandment: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind" (Lk 10:27).
Prayer: Father, may I not have good days but best days for Your glory.
Promise: "We belong neither to darkness nor to night; therefore let us not be asleep like the rest, but awake and sober!" -1 Thes 5:5-6
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, teaching us to pray (Lk 11:2) and baptizing us in the Spirit (Mk 1:8).

DRIVING A CONVERT-ABLE - One Bread, One Body, 11/15/2014

DRIVING A CONVERT-ABLE
"Listen to what the corrupt judge has to say." -Luke 18:6
More people than ever respect "neither God nor man" (Lk 18:2). These people are powerfully continuing and promoting great injustices. They "care little for God or man" (Lk 18:4). They are "lovers of self and of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, profane, inhuman, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating the good. They will be treacherous, reckless, pompous, lovers of pleasure rather than of God" (2 Tm 3:2-4). "They did not see fit to acknowledge God, so God delivered them up to their own depraved sense to do what is unseemly. They are filled with every kind of wickedness: maliciousness, greed, ill will, envy, murder, bickering, deceit, craftiness. They are gossips and slanderers, they hate God, are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wrongdoing and rebellious toward their parents. One sees in them men without conscience, without loyalty, without affection, without pity" (Rm 1:28-31).
These people are extremely dangerous. They could murder, rape, and mutilate you without feeling even a tinge of guilt. However, these people are afraid. They are like the unjust judge in today's Gospel reading who was paranoid enough to think that the defenseless widow in his court room would end by doing him violence (Lk 18:5). Evil people are always unstable. As St. Augustine said, their hearts are restless until they rest in God. This means that these people are not only dangerous but changeable, even "convert-able."
Some of the most evil people in the world are about to repent. Be like Ananias and go to the raging, hateful Sauls of the world to offer them new life in Jesus (Acts 9:10ff).
Prayer: Father, use me to reach those most desperately lost.
Promise: "When the Son of Man comes, will He find the faith on the earth?" -Lk 18:8, our transl.
Praise: Just by being herself, Michelle brought her Catholic faith and views into her college classroom discussions.
(For related teaching, order our leaflet, "Mission Impossible".)

SPACED OR GRACED?
"It will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed." -Luke 17:30
Today, I visited two people who had suffered strokes. The strokes affected a part of the brain which is necessary for their memory to function. For example, if these men walked a few feet away from their homes, they might not remember how to return, even with the home in plain sight.
All of us, because of our fallen nature, were stroke victims spiritually. We were confused and didn't know if we had a home or where it was. We were "out of it" and would have stayed "out of it" (see Lk 17:26ff).
"But God is rich in mercy; because of His great love for us He brought us to life with Christ when we were dead in sin. By this favor you were saved. Both with and in Christ Jesus He raised us up and gave us a place in the heavens" (Eph 2:4-6). The Lord has given us a new nature. We need not be confused and deceived (see 2 Jn 7) anymore. By totally giving our lives to Jesus, we can walk "in the path of truth" (2 Jn 4). We will not get lost. We will be ready for Jesus' second coming and will go home to our Father in heaven. Thank you, Jesus, for saving us!
Prayer: Jesus, my Light, my Love, my Lord, my All!
Promise: "Look out that you yourselves do not lose what you have worked for; you must receive your reward in full." -2 Jn 8
Praise: In obedience to and by the grace of God, Maria fasts three times a week in order to bring down the strongholds of the enemy and build up the Kingdom of God (see Mt 17:21, NAB).

REFRESHMENT IN THE DEEP END
"Refresh this heart of mine in Christ." -Philemon 20
In 2001, Pope John Paul II proclaimed and prophesied that the Lord's call for the Church at the beginning of the third millennium is: "Put out into the deep" (see Lk 5:4). Many of you heeded that call and have been serving the Lord in the "deep end" ever since. You are weary and a long way from the stability of dry land.
Jesus has made plans to refresh you out there in the deep.
* Jesus is with you always (Mt 1:23; 28:20). Simply turn to Him. "Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you" (Mt 11:28).
* Receive the eucharistic Jesus in Mass, even daily. His Real Presence in the Eucharist is His presence "par excellence" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 11, Pope John Paul II).
* Jesus refreshes us through other members of His Body (see 1 Cor 16:18; Phlm 7; 2 Tm 1:16, RSV-CE).
* God's love is so great that He sent His Living Word, in the person of His Son, Jesus, to refresh us. His Word is Food for us (see Mt 4:4; Dt 8:3). His Word sustains us (Heb 1:3) and causes us to grow (Acts 20:32). "Such is the force and power of the Word of God that it can serve the Church as her support and vigor and the children of the Church as strength for their faith, food for the soul, and a pure and lasting font of spiritual life" (Catechism, 131).
Remain in the deep and allow Jesus to refresh you. Some veteran disciples in great need of refreshment have survived by stoically closing their hearts. This is not a survival technique, but a refusal to embrace the refreshment Jesus provides. Daily, allow your hearts to be open, docile, and "refresh-able." May this be for you a "season of refreshment" (Acts 3:20) out in the deep end.
Prayer: Father, each day may Your joy be our strength (Neh 8:10).
Promise: "The reign of God is already in your midst." -Lk 17:21
Praise: St. Frances Xavier ministered the love of Jesus to countless children through her schools, hospitals, and orphanages.

HIS PIERCED, BEAUTIFUL FEET
"He threw himself on his face at the feet of Jesus and spoke His praises." -Luke 17:16
There is something about the feet of Jesus. Because His feet are nail-scarred from the crucifixion (see Lk 24:39), they are beautiful (see Is 52:7). Jesus' pierced feet bring the good news of salvation.
The Samaritan leper who was healed "threw himself on his face at the feet of Jesus" (Lk 17:16). Mary of Bethany "seated herself at the Lord's feet and listened to His words" (Lk 10:39). Later, this "Mary brought a pound of costly perfume made from genuine aromatic nard, with which she anointed Jesus' feet. Then she dried His feet with her hair" (Jn 12:3). "A woman known in the town to be a sinner" (Lk 7:37) stood behind Jesus "at His feet, weeping so that her tears fell upon His feet. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissing them and perfuming them with the oil" (Lk 7:38). After the women leaving Jesus' tomb met Him risen from the dead, they "embraced His feet and did Him homage" (Mt 28:9).
In love for Jesus, we should throw ourselves at Jesus' feet and embrace, kiss, and perfume His feet. At the pierced, beautiful feet of Jesus, we must repent of our sins and praise and worship Jesus. Throw yourself on your "face at the feet of Jesus" (Lk 17:16).
Prayer: "Glorious God, in adoration, at Your feet we belong" (from the song "Glorious God").
Promise: He saved us "through Jesus Christ our Savior, that we might be justified by His grace and become heirs, in hope, of eternal life. You can depend on this to be true." -Ti 3:6-8
Praise: St. Josaphat was misrepresented by both the East and the West when trying to reconcile the two factions. As a result, he was a victim of a murder plot.

THE STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
"Reject godless ways and worldly desires." -Titus 2:12
Many of our desires are contradictory and destructive. Therefore, in His mercy, "the grace of God has appeared, offering salvation" and training us "to reject godless ways and worldly desires, and live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age" (Ti 2:11-12). The Lord commands us: "Live soberly" (1 Pt 1:13), and "do not yield to the desires that once shaped you in your ignorance" (1 Pt 1:14). "You are not to spend what remains of your earthly life on human desires but on the will of God" (1 Pt 4:2). "You must lay aside your former way of life and the old self which deteriorates through illusion and desire" (Eph 4:22). Unless worldly desires are rejected, they will deform us, take away our lives, and cause our lives to deteriorate. Therefore, "those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires" (Gal 5:24).
Father Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, said near the end of his life: "The more I say 'No' to myself, the more I say 'Yes' to the Holy Spirit." Ask the Spirit to lust against the desires of your flesh (Gal 5:17) and give you the strength to crucify your desires. "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Cor 3:17). Do not be enslaved by your desires but be free in the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, may my desire for You be so encompassing that all my worldly desires will be rejected and crucified.
Promise: "The just shall possess the land and dwell in it forever." -Ps 37:29
Praise: St. Martin strove to do the right thing his entire life and was used by God because of his great zeal. He spent the last eleven years of his life in humble toil, preparing for glory.

"BLOOM WHERE YOU'RE PLANTED" - One Bread, One Body, 11/10/2014
Monday, November 10, 2014, Pope St. Leo the Great
Titus 1:1-9, Psalm 24:1-6, Luke 17:1-6

"BLOOM WHERE YOU'RE PLANTED"
"My purpose in leaving you in Crete was that you might accomplish what had been left undone..." -Titus 1:5
Paul left Titus behind in Crete to minister to the Cretans. However, "Cretans have ever been liars, beasts, and lazy gluttons" (Ti 1:12). Paul probably didn't get too many resumes from candidates looking to get the job in Crete. Titus accepted the grace and faithfully established the foundations of the Church in Crete.
After Jesus set a Gerasene man free from a legion of demons, He did not allow the man to accompany Him (Mk 5:18ff). Instead, Jesus sent him back to witness to his family. "At that the man went off and began to proclaim throughout the Ten Cities" - above and beyond what Jesus asked of him - "what Jesus had done for him. They were all amazed at what they heard" (Mk 5:20).
Jesus refused Peter's request to remain atop the Mount of Transfiguration amidst the scene of His glory (Mt 17:4ff). Instead, Peter had to keep quiet about this wonderful experience (Mk 9:9) and return to failure and rebuke down in the valley (Mk 9:18-19). By the Holy Spirit, Peter persevered and soon led three thousand people to Jesus in one day (Acts 2:41).
Jesus may plant us in a sprawling weed patch (Mt 13:30). He often calls us to stay put (1 Tm 1:3) and "walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). "Do whatever [Jesus] tells you" (Jn 2:5). Remember that, in Jesus, "you are the light of the world" (Mt 5:14). Because of you, may the weeds one day testify: "A people living in darkness has seen a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen" (Mt 4:16).
Prayer: "To do Your will, O my God, is my delight" (Ps 40:9).
Promise: "If he sins against you seven times a day, and seven times a day turns back to you saying: 'I am sorry,' forgive him." -Lk 17:4
Praise: Pope St. Leo preached life-changing sermons and called many to holiness. His sermons are still read today by the Church in the Liturgy of the Hours.
