CHRISTMAS CHRISTIANS

" 'The virgin shall be with Child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call Him Emmanuel,' a name which means 'God is with us.' " -Matthew 1:23

At the Incarnation, God did the impossible: He became fully human while remaining fully divine. Without sexual relations (Mt 1:20, 25), Mary, God's mother, conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. A star (Mt 2:2) and choirs of angels (Lk 2:13) announced Jesus' birth. Jesus' Incarnation was a greater event than the astounding release of the Israelites from their exile in Babylon, and the release from Babylon was greater than the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt (Jer 23:7-8). Thus the Incarnation was greater than both of these awesome events.

The Incarnation was the turning point in human history. In fact, we date human history as before the Incarnation (B.C.) and after it (A.D.). We pray about the Incarnation in the Creed, the "Hail Mary," the "Angelus," and the first joyful mystery of the rosary. We celebrate the Incarnation on March 25, the feast of the Annunciation, and at every Christmas season.

We are called to be incarnational in our history, prayer, and celebrations. We are called to be Christmas Christians intensely and always. Praise Jesus, God made man, the Word made flesh!

Prayer: Father, make me a Christmas Christian.

Promise: "She is to have a Son and you are to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins." -Mt 1:21

Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in the burning bush, Who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."

FROM MESS TO BLESSED - One Bread, One Body, 12/17/2015

FROM MESS TO BLESSED

"Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar." -Matthew 1:3

Today begins the grand finale of Advent, a mini-Advent to especially prepare for the Christmas coming of Jesus Christ. For many people, life during this week is chaotic and jumbled. They hurry to buy, wrap, and ship gifts, attend holiday parties, and conclude Christmas preparations. Therefore, the Church this week celebrates a mini-Advent in the final eight days of Advent to call us to focus on preparing for Jesus. This mini-Advent starts every December 17th by reading the genealogy of Jesus. His genealogy shows that God uses even the messes made by human sin to complete His will.

For example, Jesus descended from the line of Judah, a kingly tribe (see Gn 49:8-10) from which kings David and Solomon descended. Yet Judah was no saint. He fathered twin sons Perez and Zerah (Gn 38:29ff) by sinfully consorting with a prostitute, who turned out to be his daughter-in-law Tamar. At the time, Judah didn't recognize her. He had been dealing unjustly with Tamar, withholding her legal right of marrying his remaining son after she had been widowed from his other two sons (see Gn 38:11ff). Even soap operas don't concoct a plot as twisted as that of Judah and Tamar. Yet Judah is held up as ruler among the twelve sons of Israel! (Gn 49:10)

Advent proclaims that there is no mess too complicated for God to transform and use to accomplish His will. Is your life a mess? Give the Lord the messes in your life. He can use them in ways greater than you could ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20).

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to believe that "nothing is impossible with" You (Lk 1:37; see also Mt 19:26).

Promise: "He shall defend the afflicted among the people, save the children of the poor, and crush the oppressor." -Ps 72:4

Praise: "O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, You govern all creation with Your strong yet tender care."

SHHH!

"I will hear what God proclaims." -Psalm 85:9

As we near Christmas, I believe the Spirit's word to the churches is: "Shhh." The Lord is putting His finger to His mouth and telling us to quiet down, to settle down, or we will miss Christ's quiet, unassuming Christmas coming. He comes to us "like dew from above, like gentle rain" (Is 45:8). If we don't have "silent nights," we won't have "holy nights." If we don't have quiet, we may not have Christmas. There may be no room for Him in our noisy inn (Lk 2:7).

At this time of year, the world turns up the volume, providing almost constant racket and noise. We bombard ourselves with TVs, radios, and movies. We can't put down our electronic devices. The devil is attempting to rob us of Christmas by drowning out Jesus. The Christ of Christmas often speaks in a still, small voice (1 Kgs 19:12-13). Only those who are quiet enough will hear Him. "Shhh." He's coming.

Prayer: (Please spend 15 minutes of silence in the presence of the Lord today.)

Promise: "Jesus gave this response: 'Go and report to John what you have seen and heard. The blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, the deaf hear, dead men are raised to life, and the poor have the good news preached to them.' " -Lk 7:22

Praise: Celeste spends time in eucharistic adoration every week.

(Grow in your love of silent adoration by reading the Bible every day. We have several tape series to order or several digital series to order or download to help you at presentationministries.com. "Overview of the Bible" is six audio tapes starting with AV 10A-1 or CD 10A-1 or three video tapes starting with V-10A or DVD 10A. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

"This son said in reply, 'No, I will not'; but afterward he regretted it and went." -Matthew 21:30

Jesus is the Son of God. He always did what His Father requested. "Jesus Christ...was not alternately 'yes' and 'no'; He was never anything but 'yes' " (2 Cor 1:19). Mary was a daughter of God who said 'Yes' to God, and then lived out her 'Yes' every day of her life. St. Joseph said 'Yes' to God by agreeing to receive Mary as His wife and raise Jesus as his Foster-Son. St. Paul mirrored the son in Jesus' parable who began by saying an emphatic 'No' to the Father, yet wound up living a life of discipleship and evangelization that was a resounding 'Yes' (see Acts 9:1-22).

Jesus' Gospel parable makes it clear that what pleases God is our obedient actions. Our words please Him only when they are backed up by our obedience. Otherwise, our empty 'Yes' is mere lip-service to Him (Mk 7:6).

Your 'Yes' to the Lord must be said every day. Otherwise, it will eventually become a 'No' by your actions. Say 'Yes' to God. Then live your 'Yes' each day by your life of obedient faith. Let your 'Yes' really mean 'Yes' (Jas 5:12; Mt 5:37).

Prayer: Father, I know that I'll only enter Your kingdom if I do Your will. Give me a heart eager to obey You and always seeking to please You. Give me "obedient faith" (Rm 1:5).

Promise: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves." -Ps 34:19

Praise: Anna made a promise to pray the Liturgy of the Hours every day in Advent in order to prepare for Christmas.
