M & M
"Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him to her home. She had a sister named Mary." -Luke 10:38-39
Some people say they are like Martha; others say they are like Mary. However, the Lord is not calling us to be Martha or Mary, but Martha and Mary.
We should imitate Abraham, Sarah, and Martha by making great sacrifices in offering hospitality. Prior to our high-tech times, a family began preparing a meal by picking out a steer and working with flour (Gn 18:6-7). No freezer, microwaves, or packaged foods! To offer hospitality was a monumental, sacrificial task. We can understand why Martha complained about being left alone to do such daunting household tasks (Lk 10:40).
We also need to imitate Mary by sitting at the Lord's feet and listening to His words (Lk 10:39). This too is a formidable task. Listening to someone, especially to God, is often more challenging than the hardest work.
All workers must be listening to the Lord, or they won't know what they're doing or why they're doing it. All listeners need to do some working. Those who hear God's Word must do God's Word, or they will be deceiving themselves (Jas 1:22). "Work with anxious concern to achieve your salvation" (Phil 2:12). Only those who are like both Martha and Mary are like Jesus. Be like Jesus.
Prayer: Father, teach me to work, listen, and sacrifice.
Promise: "Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for you. In my own flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His body, the Church." -Col 1:24
Praise: All glory, honor, and praise to You, risen Lord Jesus. We worship You forever.

THE MEETINGS OF THE MINDS
"Woe to those who plan iniquity, and work out evil on their couches." -Micah 2:1
At this moment, groups of intelligent and gifted people are meeting to "plan iniquity and work out evil." International institutions and CEOs of mass media conglomerates are planning a "conspiracy against life." Pope St. John Paul II called this an "objective" conspiracy. It is not merely his or anyone else's opinion. He is not paranoid but facing the facts (Gospel of Life, 17).
We Christians are also called to meet and plan. Though meetings are sometimes much maligned, nonetheless, those meetings conducted to the glory of the Father, under the lordship of Jesus, and in the power of the Spirit can be used by God to transform the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).
Before the first Christian Pentecost, the Lord led His disciples not only to have a prayer meeting but a business meeting (Acts 1:15ff). Peter led the meeting. He brought up some Scriptures and applied them to the need to replace Judas. The disciples in the upper room had to decide on how the Lord wanted His Church to be structured, the criteria for being an apostle, and the process of making this decision. After the work of this meeting, the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost, and the Church was born. Meet in the Spirit, and receive the Spirit in new ways.
Prayer: Jesus, may every meeting proclaim that You are Lord (see Phil 2:11).
Promise: "In His name, the Gentiles will find hope." -Mt 12:21
Praise: The Carmelites purchased a seminary and prayed fervently for vocations. When enrollments dried up, they were forced to sell it to a Protestant group who used the building as a seminary. This seminary has produced over fifty Protestant ministers who have since converted to the Catholic Church.

"A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS" (Ex 19:6; see Rv 1:6)
"Have you not read what David did when he and his men were hungry, how he entered God's house and ate the holy bread, a thing forbidden to him and his men or anyone other than priests?" -Matthew 12:3-4
Something greater than what meets the eye was taking place in today's Gospel reading. The hungry apostles were snacking on grain on the Sabbath. The Pharisees (who were working on the Sabbath as self-appointed law enforcement officers) accused the apostles of "harvesting" on the Sabbath, thus violating one of the Ten Commandments (Ex 20:8-11).
Jesus responds by referring to an act of King David, who allowed his warriors to eat the showbread. Only Old Testament priests were allowed to eat this bread (see 1 Sm 21:2-7; Lv 24:5-9). Jesus thus compared His apostles to priests, and allowed them to perform a priestly act! Not only is Jesus defending His accused apostles, He is also defending their upcoming priesthood. He says, "There is something greater here" (see Mt 12:6). Jesus was raising His twelve apostles to be priests. He was transforming the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament into His new covenant priesthood. His apostles would belong to a new, "more excellent" priesthood (see Heb 8:1-6).
Jesus was fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy in today's first reading to put His house in order (Is 38:1). Jesus foretold that His house would be a house of prayer (Is 56:7; Mt 21:13). His house would be "greater than the Temple" (Mt 12:6); it will be His Body, the Church, the new house of God, the new Temple where the mercy and holiness God desires would abound (Mt 12:7-8). Join Jesus. Lay down your life for His Body, the Church.
Prayer: Father, may all Your children be one (Jn 17:21).
Promise: "Those live whom the Lord protects." -Is 38:16
Praise: St. Bonaventure became friends with St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Louis at school in Paris.

LOVE ALONE
"Come to Me." -Matthew 11:28
Come to Jesus, "all you who are weary and find life burdensome" (Mt 11:28). He will give you not necessarily what you want or think you need; rather, He will give you His way and His judgments (Is 26:8). The Lord Jesus will give you the desire of your soul - if His name, Jesus, and His title, Lord, are your desire (Is 26:8).
The Lord calls you to come to Him for His sake, not so much for the sake of what He can do for you. "For though the fig tree blossom not nor fruit be on the vines, though the yield of the olive fail and the terraces produce no nourishment, though the flocks disappear from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet will I rejoice in the Lord and exult in my saving God" (Hab 3:17-18). Come to Jesus not to be served, but to serve and to give your life to Him (see Mt 20:28). Come to Jesus "in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health." Come to Jesus with no ulterior motives. Come to Jesus in unconditional love. Come to Jesus with no agenda except to love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Lk 10:27).
Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, give me pure love through the intercession of the Blessed Mother.
Promise: "Salvation we have not achieved for the earth, the inhabitants of the world cannot bring it forth. But your dead shall live, their corpses shall rise; awake and sing, you who lie in the dust." -Is 26:18-19
Praise: Although her family rejected her, St. Kateri never rejected her Lord.

BATHED IN THE LIGHT - One Bread, One Body, 7/13/2016

BATHED IN THE LIGHT
"Father, Lord of heaven and earth, to You I offer praise; for what You have hidden from the learned and the clever You have revealed to the merest children." -Matthew 11:25
The minds of little children are like sponges. They absorb and remember so much of what's going on around them. We Christians can be like little children in our receptivity to divine revelation. We can be sensitive to, and pregnant with, God's presence. The teachings of the Church can impact and change our lives. The words of the Bible can seem to almost jump off the pages.
We will be very receptive to divine revelation if we are like "the merest children," that is, if we are like infants in our awareness of our dependence on God (Mt 11:25). When we know that without the Lord we can do nothing (Jn 15:5), we will constantly ask Him for help. Also, we will be very thankful for His graces and blessings because we know we need them and He alone has given them. Moreover, if we are aware of our own utter dependence on God, we will realize that everyone else desperately needs the Lord, whether they know it or not. Therefore, in love we will share the Lord, our faith, and His blessings.
Are you constantly praying, thanking the Lord, and sharing His good news? If so, you are a "merest child" bathed in the light of divine revelation.
Prayer: Father, Your words are spirit and life (Jn 6:63).
Promise: "The Lord will not cast off His people, nor abandon His inheritance." -Ps 94:14
Praise: St. Henry is the patron of dukes, those rejected by religious orders, the childless and the handicapped.
(Bath in the light of divine revelation and help others also by sharing the Bible. For encouragement, order our series on "Biblical Counseling" on audio CD 13 A-1, CD 13 A-3, CD 13 B-1 or video DVD 13 A and 13 B.)

CONVERTING THE PERVERTING - One Bread, One Body, 7/12/2016
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, July 12, 2016
Isaiah 7:1-9, Psalm 48:2-8, Matthew 11:20-24
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/071216.cfm
CONVERTING THE PERVERTING
"If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Sodom, it would be standing today." -Matthew 11:23
The cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum did not convert despite the many miracles Jesus worked within their borders (Mt 11:20ff). However, Jesus said that Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom, some of the most wicked cities in history, would have converted in response to the same miracles (Mt 11:21, 23). Jesus also said that those who believe in Him will do greater works than He had done (Jn 14:12). Therefore, if we believe in Jesus, we have more than enough firepower to convert not only individuals but also cities. Moreover, we can convert not only some cities but even the most perverted and notorious cities.
There is One much greater in us "than there is in the world" (1 Jn 4:4). "We are more than conquerors because of Him Who has loved us" (Rm 8:37). By faith, we can conquer kingdoms (Heb 11:33). We "possess God's power for the destruction of strongholds. We demolish sophistries and every proud pretension that raises itself against the knowledge of God; we likewise bring every thought into captivity to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Cor 10:4-5). We can attack the gates of hell, which cannot prevail against us (Mt 16:18).
Most people recognize the formidable perversion-power of the world, the flesh, and the devil. We must also realize the much more formidable conversion-power of believing Christians working miracles. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can renew the world.
Prayer: Father, do in me what You must in order to do through me what You will.
Promise: "Unless your faith is firm you shall not be firm!" -Is 7:9
Praise: Susan prays daily for her country to return to the Faith.
