THAT'S A NO-KNOW?

Peter "began cursing, and swore, 'I do not even know the Man!' " -Matthew 26:74

Peter was privileged to know Jesus in ways not granted to the other disciples (see Mt 16:17; Mt 14:29; Mt 17:1; Mk 5:37; Mt 26:37). If anyone was in a position to know Jesus intimately, Peter was. He knew Jesus the Messiah, Teacher, Deliverer, Raiser of the dead, and Master of the crowds. Yet, on Good Friday, Peter saw a Man before him standing bound, captive, mocked, and silent before His accusers. When asked about his association with this Prisoner, Peter answered: "I do not even know the Man" (Mt 26:74). Certainly, Peter spoke words of cowardice and denial. Yet, there is a profound truth to Peter's statement: he did not know Jesus, the Suffering Servant, Who was standing before him.

Paul was privileged to see Jesus and converse with Him (see Acts 9:4-5; 18:9-10; 9:16; 2 Cor 12:1-4). Paul knew Jesus in a way that few human beings will ever experience. However, Paul said: "I wish to know Christ" (Phil 3:10). Paul realized that his human lifespan was insufficient to completely know the God-Man.

Perhaps you feel that you know Jesus personally and intimately. Even so, the Passion Sunday readings challenge you to take a new look at the Unknown One. Humbly bow before Him during the upcoming Holy Week. Ask Him: "Do I really know You?" He will look at you (Lk 22:61), and your life with Him will never be the same.

Prayer: "May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ...grant you a spirit of wisdom and insight to know Him clearly" (Eph 1:17).

Promise: "Morning after morning He opens my ear that I may hear." -Is 50:4

Praise: "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Mt 21:9)

THE MAGNET OF UNITY - One Bread, One Body, 4/8/2017

THE MAGNET OF UNITY

"He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together." -Jeremiah 31:10

Jesus died on the cross "to gather into one all the dispersed children of God" (Jn 11:52). He is praying that we be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Jesus makes us one by His being lifted up on the cross, in the Resurrection and the Ascension, to the right hand of the Father. Then He draws us to Himself, as He promised: "I - once I am lifted up from earth - will draw all men to Myself" (Jn 12:32). As we draw closer to Jesus, we draw closer to each other. As we converge on Jesus, we are united with each other. For example, to be more closely united with your spouse, you need to draw closer to Jesus and to pray that your spouse do the same.

Tomorrow we begin Holy Week. We focus on Jesus lifted up on the cross. Then, in the Easter season, we see Jesus lifted up in His Resurrection, Ascension, and glorification. The lifted-up Jesus is drawing us powerfully to Himself and thereby to each other. The lifted-up Jesus is the Magnet of unity. Let us pray: "Draw me!" (Sg 1:4)

Prayer: Father, I have been baptized in one Spirit into the one body of Christ (1 Cor 12:13). Prepare me to renew my baptismal promises in a world-changing way this Easter.

Promise: "I will make them one nation upon the land, in the mountains of Israel, and there shall be one prince for them all." -Ez 37:22

Praise: George reconciled with his family and with God.

"WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?" (Mt 16:15) - One Bread, One Body, 4/7/2017

"WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?" (Mt 16:15)

"You Who are only a man are making Yourself God." -John 10:33

In the Gospel of John, Jesus claims that He is God. He says: "The Father and I are one" (Jn 10:30). He uses the phrase "I AM" to refer to Himself (Jn 8:24, 28, 58), and that phrase is God's name as revealed to Moses (Ex 3:14).

When the Jewish leaders accused Jesus of making Himself God, Jesus was presented with the perfect opportunity to clarify exactly Who He was (Jn 10:33). Jesus' life was in danger; they were reaching for rocks to stone Him (Jn 10:31). Jesus could have easily said, "Slow down, men! Don't stone Me. I didn't mean to imply that I was actually God." Jesus not only refused to back off His claims to be God; rather, He reinforced His claim that He was indeed God, by virtue of His works, His faith, His obedience, and by having been sent by the Father to earth (Jn 10:34-38).

Jesus claimed to be God's Son, and therefore His equal (Jn 10:33). Then Jesus backed up that claim by doing the signs which only God could do. Finally, Jesus underscored His claim to be God by freely deciding to lay down His life rather than renounce that He was God.

Now the decision is ours. Jesus clearly claimed to be God. He asks us: "Who do you say that I am?" (Mt 16:15). As we approach Holy Week, how will you answer Jesus' question?

Prayer: Jesus, may I never diminish anything You say. Help me to believe You are Who You claim to be, and obey and worship accordingly.

Promise: "Praised be the Lord, I exclaim, and I am safe from my enemies." -Ps 18:4

Praise: St. John was the first to found teachers colleges for the poor.

A HEART-WARMING LENT - One Bread, One Body, 4/6/2017

Thursday, April 6, 2017

Genesis 17:3-9, Psalm 105:4-9, John 8:51-59

A HEART-WARMING LENT

"When Abram prostrated himself, God continued to speak to him." -Genesis 17:3

Will you let the Lord say anything to you, even if you don't understand it or if it seems "too good to be true"? If today you hear His voice, is your heart hardened or opened? (Ps 95:7-8) The Lord wishes we would listen to Him. He pleads: "If only My people would hear Me..." (Ps 81:14).

One week from today will be the last day of Lent. Throughout Lent, the Lord has been preparing us to hear a special Easter message. We have only one more week to open our hearts.

The Lord wants to say something to us like: "Before Abraham came to be, I AM" (Jn 8:58). Jesus is saying that the long-awaited Messiah has come, that He is the Messiah, and that He is God. However, most people of Jesus' time were not ready to hear such great news. Accordingly, they rejected Jesus and picked up rocks to throw at Him (Jn 8:59).

God likewise had some great news for Abraham. The Lord announced He was making an everlasting covenant with Abraham to make him "the father of a host of nations" (Gn 17:4). Even though it was hard to believe, Abraham received God's Word. He laid prostrate before the Lord and listened to God's voice.

Did you ever have great news to share and repeatedly got voice mail? Then you know how the Lord feels and why He's trying to open our hearts this Lent.

Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, give me an open, warm, single, humble, loving, hearing heart.

Promise: "I solemnly assure you, if a man is true to My word he shall never see death." -Jn 8:51

Praise: Jeanne waited several years without dating believing the Lord would provide her God-given mate. Now happily married, Jeanne and her spouse have centered their marriage in the Lord.

BORN ENSLAVED, BORN AGAIN FREE - One Bread, One Body, 4/5/2017

BORN ENSLAVED, BORN AGAIN FREE

"No slave has a permanent place in the family, but the son has a place there forever." -John 8:35

We are preparing for Easter, which arrives in eleven days. If the Son (Jesus) frees us, we are really free (Jn 8:36). John calls Jesus "the Son" when he proclaims that Jesus will free us.

In Jesus' time, most people were slaves not because they were sold into slavery but because they were born into it. Freedom and slavery depended upon whose son or daughter you were. Thus, when Jesus promised freedom, some of the Jews claimed they were already free because they were children of God (Jn 8:41) and of Abraham (Jn 8:33). Jesus questioned whether Abraham was their father because they didn't act like Abraham (Jn 8:39ff). Jesus accused them of being children of the devil (Jn 8:44). This means they were slaves because they were children of a slave and an enslaver.

When you were baptized, you became sons and daughters of God. Therefore, you became free. However, free people can choose to live like slaves. Live your Baptism. In eleven days, renew your baptismal promises with total love and great faith. Live as sons and daughters of God. Be free.

Prayer: Father, free me by sending the Holy Spirit to cry out in my heart, "Abba" (Gal 4:6).

Promise: "I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God." -Dn 3:92

Praise: St. Vincent turned down being made a cardinal to answer the call as missionary.

NEED A LIFT? - One Bread, One Body, 4/4/2017

Tuesday, April 4, 2017, St. Isidore of Seville

Numbers 21:4-9, Psalm 102:2-3, 16-21, John 8:21-30

NEED A LIFT?

"When you lift up the Son of Man..." -John 8:28

When the Son of Man is lifted up, Jesus will draw all people to Himself (Jn 12:32) so that they may realize that He is God (Jn 8:28), believe that He is Healer, and receive eternal life (Jn 3:14-15). Lifting up Jesus unleashes a life-changing, parish-changing, and world-changing sequence of events. Therefore, we must devote ourselves to ensuring that Jesus is constantly being lifted up.

How is Jesus lifted up? He is lifted up:
* on His cross. Display crucifixes everywhere - in your home, parish, school, office, car, and other places.
* at the elevation of the Eucharist in Mass. Attend Mass daily or as often as possible, and invite others to join you.

3) as He is exposed in the monstrance at Eucharistic adoration. Adore the eucharistic Jesus whenever possible. Work to promote eucharistic adoration wherever you can.
* in a manner of speaking, in the praises of His people. Praise God daily. Praise Him in church (Ps 150:1). Praise Him with the spiritual gift of tongues (1 Cor 14:2, 17). Start or join a prayer and praise group. Pray the Divine Praises. "Praise the Lord!" (Ps 150:6)
* during Sunday Mass, as the Word of God, Jesus (Jn 1:1, 14), is lifted up as the priest or deacon lifts high the Book of the Gospels before proclaiming the Gospel reading. Teach others to tremble at His Word (Is 66:2).

Jesus proclaims: "I - once I am lifted up from earth - will draw all men to Myself" (Jn 12:32). Therefore, "lift high the cross!" Lift up the name of Jesus! Give your world a lift.

Prayer: Jesus, may I decrease so that You may increase (Jn 3:30).

Promise: "You will surely die in your sins unless you come to believe that I AM." -Jn 8:24

Praise: St. Isidore's brothers and sister also became canonized saints.

BATH AND BODY - One Bread, One Body, 4/3/2017

BATH AND BODY

"She decided to bathe." -Daniel 13:15

Today's first reading is more than a story of good triumphing over evil. It's an Old Testament preview of Baptism. When Susanna enters her bath (Dn 13:17-18), she is surrounded by the powers of evil, as represented by the two corrupt elders. Susanna is immersed in a dilemma of whether to save her life by yielding to evil or to cling to holiness and purity at the cost of her life (Dn 13:22). Susanna rises from her bath determined to trust in God, saying to the evil judges, "It is better for me to fall into your power without guilt than to sin before the Lord" (Dn 13:23).

Susanna rose from the waters of her bath free, pure, and victorious over the kingdom of darkness. As we are baptized, we emerge from the waters of Baptism redeemed and uncondemned (see Rm 8:1). Most of us were baptized as infants. We can't remember emerging from the waters free and victorious. In her wisdom, the Church therefore calls us to regularly renew our Baptisms. This makes our Baptism new and alive for us. Just as important, it challenges us to live our Baptism in a new, holy, and faith-filled lifestyle.

In a few weeks, you will renew your Baptism at Easter Vigil and/or Easter Sunday Mass. As Susanna did, make the decision to entrust your life completely to the Lord. Prepare now to renew your Baptism. Reject sin and Satan. Hunger and thirst for holiness (Mt 5:6). Refuse to compromise with the kingdom of darkness in any way, even if you must endure persecution for holiness' sake (see Mt 5:10). Choose to be pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Prayer: Jesus, you gave up Your body for me (Lk 22:19). I give up my body for You. Be glorified in my body (1 Cor 6:20).

Promise: "The Lord is my Shepherd...Beside restful waters He leads me; He refreshes my soul." -Ps 23:1-3

Praise: Susan and her family celebrate their Baptismal anniversaries every year.
