WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS
Jesus "was known to be of human estate, and it was thus that He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!" —Philippians 2:7-8

The cross, a means of executing a criminal and a symbol of cruelty and shame, was changed by Jesus into the greatest symbol of God’s love and glory. Jesus effected this transformation by what He did on the cross. On the cross, Jesus:
• shed His blood to redeem us, wash away our sins (Eph 1:7), and deliver us from a futile way of life (1 Pt 1:18-19),
• made it possible for us to become children of God (Gal 6:15) and share in the divine nature (2 Pt 1:4),
• made the most pure act of unconditional love and poured out infinite mercy,
• humbled Himself and obeyed His Father (Phil 2:8),
• forgave us and taught us to forgive others (see Lk 23:34),
• drew all people to Himself (Jn 12:32),
• gave us the opportunity to believe in Him so as to have eternal life (Jn 3:14-15),
• made “peace through the blood of His cross” (Col 1:20),
• gave His Spirit (see Jn 19:30), and
• gave us Mary to be our mother (Jn 19:26-27).
During the few hours Jesus hung on the cross, He did more to transform the human race than has been or will be done in all the hours in the history of the world. Let us live to worship Jesus and tell as many people as possible about the triumph of His cross.

Prayer: Jesus, I am overwhelmed by Your infinite grace. I give my life totally to You.

Promise: "Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered." —Nm 21:9

Praise: Pious tradition holds that St. Helena discovered the true cross in Jerusalem in 326 AD. "May I never boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!" (Gal 6:14)

Oh! Jesus, what sorrow can be more painful then a mother watching her beloved Son die a most horrible
death.

This week our church honors Mary of "Lady of sorrows" who stood at Your cross and saw You die.

Yet her faith was not dimmed, because her trust in the Father continued.

Please, oh! Jesus, give us some of that faith that we might continue to face all the problems of life
with the faith of Mary.

Lord, let us give You praise and glory throughout our lives.

Lord, let us have the peace that only You can give, and let Your love guide us always.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THANK YOU FOR COMMANDING THE IMPOSSIBLE
https://www.presentationministries.com/series/obob/obob-2020-9-13-en

"Then in anger the master handed him over to the torturers until he paid back all that he owed. My
heavenly Father will treat you in exactly the same way unless each of you forgives his brother from his
heart." -Matthew 18:34-35

If we don't accept the grace to forgive those who have sinned against us:
. the Lord remembers our sins in detail (see Sir 28:1),
. we should not expect to be healed by the Lord (Sir 28:3),
. we will not be forgiven (Sir 28:2, 4-5), and
. we will be handed over to torturers, such as compulsiveness, fear, depression, self-hatred, anxiety,
and other evils (Mt 18:34-35).

Therefore, we must accept the grace to forgive our brothers and sisters in Christ immediately
(see Mt 5:25), repeatedly (Mt 18:22), and from the heart (Mt 18:35). This applies not only to those who
have stopped sinning against us but also to those continuing to sin against us. This applies even to our
enemies.

Obviously, it is humanly impossible to forgive. "To err is human; to forgive is divine" (quoted from
Alexander Pope). Our only hope is to turn to the Lord, Who is divine. He always provides the grace to
obey His commands. He raises us above our human limitations to empower us to choose to forgive immediately
all who have sinned against us. Jesus gives us the privilege to live in the new world of grace and mercy.
How awesome it is to share in the miracle and mystery of forgiving! Thank You, Jesus, for Your command
that we forgive from the heart 70 x 7 times! (Mt 18:22) Thank You for grace and mercy beyond measure!
Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, may I look at forgiving others the way You do.

Promise: "None of us lives as his own master and none of us dies as his own master. While we live we are
responsible to the Lord, and when we die we die as His servants." -Rm 14:7-8

Praise: Lord, You are descended from David yet Son of God (Rm 1:3-4). Praise You Jesus!

REMEMBER ME?
"It immediately fell in and was completely destroyed." —Luke 6:49

Nineteen years ago yesterday, terrorists hijacked airplanes and flew them into the Twin Towers in New York City. Three thousand people died horrible deaths, and many people turned to the Lord in prayer. Prayers flooded electronic mail systems. Churches were full of anguished people who instinctively turned to God in prayer. People cried out “Lord, Lord” (Lk 6:46).
How many people who turned to God nineteen years ago are still seeking Him today? Jesus is merciful, and He will never reject anyone who comes to Him (Jn 6:37). What Jesus really wants, however, is for people to call Him “Lord, Lord,” and then show their acceptance of His lordship over them by hearing His words and putting them into practice the rest of their lives (Lk 6:46-47).
Let’s not perpetuate the tragedies of the past.  Anyone “who desires to come to [Jesus] will hear [His] words and put them into practice” (Lk 6:47). Those who do so “may be likened to the man who, in building a house, dug deeply and laid the foundation on a rock. When the floods came the torrent rushed in on that house, but failed to shake it because of its solid foundation” (Lk 6:48). Jesus says: “Come to Me” (Mt 11:28). Then He says: “Remain in Me” (see Jn 15:4).

Prayer: Jesus, may the hurting people that come to You, find Your healing love, and remain with You forever.

Promise: "Because the loaf of bread is one, we, many though we are, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf." —1 Cor 10:17

Praise: "For He has looked upon His servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed" (Lk 1:48). The Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary began in Spain in the Sixteenth Century.

TO BE A LEADING MAN OR LEADING LADY
Jesus "used images in speaking to them: 'Can a blind man act as guide to a blind man?' " —Luke 6:39

Jesus noted the obvious: a blind person can’t lead a blind person. This can be applied spiritually. Those “blinded by the god of the present age” (2 Cor 4:4) disqualify themselves from being effective leaders in the secular world and especially in the Christian community. The blinding god of the present age is materialism, secular humanism, and the self-centered lifestyle. If we don’t let ourselves be crucified to this pleasure-seeking way of life (see Gal 6:14), then we cannot see well enough to lead anyone.
If we are not blind but our vision is impaired because of a plank in our eye, we are not immediately disqualified from leading. However, we must put any leadership on hold until we remove the plank from our eye through repentance. Then we can take the lead in removing specks from others’ eyes (Lk 6:42).
In summary, true leadership requires radical and repeated repentance. Without deep repentance, we will never be good husbands, wives, parents, priests, pastors, or pastoral leaders. Leaders don’t have to be perfect, dynamic, or brilliant, but they must be repentant enough to see spiritually. Repent and lead.

Prayer: Father, for Your sake, my sake, and the sake of those I love and lead, may I repent today and go to Confession as soon as possible.

Promise: "In fact, I do all that I do for the sake of the gospel in the hope of having a share in its blessings." —1 Cor 9:23

Praise: Mr. and Mrs. Sanchez have led a Bible study in their home for years.

HOW TO LOVE YOUR ENEMIES LAVISHLY - One Bread, One Body,09/10/2020

HOW TO LOVE YOUR ENEMIES LAVISHLY
"Love your enemies." —Luke 6:27

Jesus commanded His followers: “To you who hear Me, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you” (Lk 6:27). A few verses later, Jesus repeated: “Love your enemy and do good” (Lk 6:35). This may be the use of the literary device called an inclusion. Ancient texts had no paragraphs. An inclusion is one way the author could indicate when the treatment of a subject begins and ends. The use of an inclusion greatly affects the interpretation of these verses.
Jesus may be commanding us to show our love to our enemies more than we show it to our friends. We may be called to lavishly love our enemies who have not repented but are presently hurting us. They continue to hate (Lk 6:27), curse, maltreat (Lk 6:28), and slap us (Lk 6:29). They may even be presently stealing from us (Lk 6:29). We as followers of Jesus are at the same time to love them by doing them good (Lk 6:27), blessing and praying for them (Lk 6:28), and even make it easier for them to hurt us and steal from us (Lk 6:29). We are to give to all these enemies (Lk 6:30) and even give them loans without expecting repayment (Lk 6:34).
This interpretation of these verses would seem absurd but for St. Paul’s admonition: “ ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon his head.’ Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good” (Rm 12:20-21). Ultimately, this interpretation seems confirmed by Jesus’ death on the cross. When Jesus was crucified, He poured out infinite love and mercy on His enemies — many of whom would never repent.
By His grace, love your enemies as Jesus does.

Prayer: Father, may I live the radical life of the baptized.

Promise: "The measure you measure with will be measured back to you." —Lk 6:38

Praise: Joe pled against the death penalty for his daughter's killer.

OUT OF EGYPT - One Bread, One Body, 09/09/2020

OUT OF EGYPT
"The world as we know it is passing away." —1 Corinthians 7:31

The Israelites in the desert preferred the food of slavery rather than the food of freedom (Nm 11:5). It was apparently easier for God to get the Israelites physically out of Egypt than it was to get Egypt out of Israel, that is to detach the Israelites from their attachment to the benefits and foods they had while they were slaves in Egypt.
Is anything holding you bound so that you cannot follow God? Ask Him to break those chains and set you free. Ask Jesus for the grace of detachment required to be set free of any attachments to the material things, blessings, and pleasures of this world, both good and bad. Earth will pass away, but the Word of God will never pass (Mt 5:18).
Since “the world as we know it is passing away” (1 Cor 7:31),   “now is the acceptable time” (2 Cor 6:2). The Lord invites us: “Come now, let us set things right” (Is 1:18). “Why delay, then?” (Acts 22:16)  “You are not to spend what remains of your earthly life on human desires but on the will of God. Already you have devoted enough time to what the pagans enjoy” (1 Pt 4:2-3).

Prayer: Father, may "our relation to this world [be] just like [that of Jesus]" (1 Jn 4:17).

Promise: "Blest shall you be when men hate you, when they ostracize you and insult you and proscribe your name as evil because of the Son of Man. On the day they do so, rejoice and exult, for your reward shall be great in heaven." —Lk 6:22-23

Praise: St. Peter, the patron of the mission to slaves, truly imitated Christ. In Cartagena, Columbia, he sought out the African slave ships. In humility, he entered the infested holds to care for the sick and the dying.
