Value the season you're in

Weekly Feature

Source: Christine Caine
People can get so caught up in the fact their dream is so close - preparing
here, there, and everywhere - but forget they still have to finish this
season before launching into the next one. I have had lots of opportunities
to finish things - jobs, relationships, renovating my house (!). The most
important lesson I've gained from all of this is the way we finish one thing
directly impacts the way we enter the new thing.

Don't Devalue the Season You're In!

The reason you may not have given birth to your dream yet is that God
obviously has more for you to learn in the season you are currently in.
Maybe it's a lesson in relationships, money, management, or cleanliness.
(Want an office with a view? Try keeping your current work space tidy.)
Regardless of the subject matter, these lessons help prepare you for
birthing your dream and living it out.

Don't forget to:
*Recognise and reflect on how far this present season has brought you.
*Ask the question: is there more to learn here?
*Appreciate the opportunities this season has given you.
*Don't Drop the Ball

You may be on the brink of giving birth to a new dream, but that's no excuse
for forgetting your current responsibilities. That would be like someone who
was getting a departmental promotion in six months deciding to take a
four-day weekend every week. Only you can decide what kind of legacy and
example you want to leave.

A positive finish might involve:
*Training new leaders
*Getting the accounts up-to-date
*Developing new systems or writing a how-to manual.
*Teaching someone the ropes.
*Working ahead of schedule to make the transition smoother once you're gone.
*Leaving the tape dispenser and stapler behind!
*Don't Burn Your Bridges

Entering a new phase doesn't necessarily mean cutting out everyone and
everything from the season you're leaving. While people in your current
season might not be coming into the next phase of your journey, they may
very well play a part in your future.

Don't gloat over the fact that you're moving on and maybe others are not.
Always value people for the part they've played in your life (however small
that might be). Say thank you - maybe even buy chocolates to show your
appreciation!

Preparation always precedes something new, and our level of preparation
revels to God (and others) our level of expectancy. It's pivotal that we be
prepared if we want to successfully birth the dreams God has put in our
hearts, but it is also important to realise that prematurely birthing them
can have debilitating effects. Realise God will bring your dreams to pass in
His perfect, divine timing. (So chill out. If it's God, it will happen! )

Do the season you're in now well. Don't stop preparing for what God has for
you, but exact all you can out of what God has given you right now.

HEAVENLY FOOD - One Bread, One Body, 4/30/2009

Thursday, April 30, 2009, Pope St. Pius V

Acts 8:26-40, Psalm 66, John 6:44-51
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/043009.shtml

HEAVENLY FOOD

"Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. This is the Bread
that comes down from heaven for a man to eat and never die." —John 6:49-50

When it comes to food, God provides and man derides. God gave Adam and Eve
all kinds of good food in the garden of Eden (Gn 2:16). Sadly, their
craving to eat beyond what God provided led to mankind's downfall (Gn
3:6).

God then provided miraculous manna to the Israelites when they were
stranded in the desert (Ex 16:14ff). He "furnished them bread from heaven,
ready to hand, untoiled-for, endowed with all delights and conforming to
every taste" (Wis 16:20). The manna even "was blended to whatever flavor
each one wished"! (Wis 16:21) All this revealed God's sweetness toward His
children (Wis 16:21). However, the Israelites in the desert soon wearied
of this miraculous, tasty fare. They were "disgusted with this wretched
food" (Nm 21:5) that God provided. Now they wanted meat, fish, cucumbers,
melons, leeks, onions, and garlic (Nm 11:4-5).

So God once again provided His children with miraculous Bread from heaven.
The infant Jesus came down from heaven and was placed in a manger, which
is a feeding trough. This intimates that Jesus is Food. His "flesh is real
food" (Jn 6:55). To make it unmistakable, Jesus proclaims: "I am the Bread
of Life...I Myself am the Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone
eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My flesh,
for the life of the world" (Jn 6:48, 51). Jesus in the Eucharist is God's
ultimate banquet. Will we reject this heavenly food? Or will we keep quiet
and eat what God provides?

Prayer: Father, may what enters and leaves my mouth be totally under Your
lordship.

Promise: "Philip launched out with this Scripture passage as his starting
point, telling him the good news of Jesus." —Acts 8:35

Praise: Pope St. Pius V lived an exemplary life, both as a 15-year-old
novice and as Pope during the victory of Lepanto.

"THE DAY OF SALVATION" (2 Cor 6:2) - One Bread, One Body, 4/29/2009

Wednesday, April 29, 2009, St. Catherine of Siena

Acts 8:1-8, Psalm 66, John 6:35-40
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/042909.shtml

"THE DAY OF SALVATION" (2 Cor 6:2)

"That day saw the beginning of a great persecution of the church." —Acts
8:1

This morning you went to the funeral of a brother in Christ, a leader in
your church (Acts 8:2). His name was Stephen, and he was martyred by a
hysterical mob. In your grief, you find yourself on the road — a fugitive
running from Stephen's murderers. Those remaining in town are being
terrorized by a man named Saul, who "entered house after house, dragged
men and women out, and threw them into jail" (Acts 8:3). This is a sad
day — a day of violence, trauma, fear, imprisonment, separation, grief,
and murder.

As you walk along, wondering if you'll be caught, you meet other travelers
and residents of small country towns. Your love for Jesus wells up; the
Spirit "puts words in your mouth" (see Mt 10:20); you speak from the
abundance of your heart (Lk 6:45). After living through so much bad news,
you still share the good news of Jesus. People with their own bad news
accept God's gift of faith and believe in Jesus. Signs and wonders
accompany your profession of faith (Mk 16:17). Several people are healed
and set free from the evil one. "The rejoicing in that town rose to fever
pitch" (Acts 8:8).

Prayer: Father, when I experience bad news, speak the good news through
me.

Promise: "I Myself am the Bread of Life. No one who comes to Me shall ever
be hungry, no one who believes in Me shall ever thirst." —Jn 6:35

Praise: In the face of difficult circumstances, St. Catherine, at age
twenty, stood up boldly and convinced Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome.

SILENT DEATH - One Bread, One Body, 4/28/2009

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, St. Peter Chanel, St. Louis Mary de Montfort

Acts 7:51— 8:1, Psalm 31, John 6:30-35
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/042809.shtml

SILENT DEATH

"Jesus explained to them: 'I Myself am the Bread of Life.' " —John 6:35

At Easter time, we celebrate life and the victory of life over death
through Jesus' resurrection. Christians are "pro-life" in the most extreme
sense of the word. Yet, like Saul, we sometimes find ourselves concurring
"in the act of killing" (Acts 8:1). We are pro-life by conviction but
pro-death by default.

For example, Saul joined in the mob's murder of Stephen by merely letting
the murderers pile their cloaks at his feet (Acts 7:58). He did not touch
Stephen. He may not have even touched the cloaks. He just stood there, but
that's all it takes to be an accomplice.

Apathy is as deadly as violence. At this Easter season, let's break all
ties with death and wash all the blood from our hands. Let's not pretend
apathy is innocence but rather repent and decide to wake up, stand up, and
speak up for life. Every baby in the womb, starving child, victim of
racism, and helpless old person is our business because we are committed
to Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25).

Prayer: Father, I choose life and reject apathy.

Promise: "No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry." —Jn 6:35

Praise: St. Louis, a missionary and martyr, chose a life of spiritual
warfare as he met great spiritual resistance in propagating devotion to
the Blessed Mother.

Disciples in a Culture of Death", or on audio AV 97-1 and AV 97-3 or on

CHANGING SIDES - One Bread, One Body, 4/27/2009

Monday, April 27, 2009

Acts 6:8-15, Psalm 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30, John 6:22-29

CHANGING SIDES

"When they found Him on the other side of the lake, they said to Him,
'Rabbi, when did You come here?' " —John 6:25

Jesus often went from one side of the Sea of Galilee to the other. Many
times the crowd following Jesus found themselves left behind on the other
side of the lake. When Jesus changed sides, He temporarily lost the crowd.

Does Jesus lose you when He changes sides? For example, when Jesus changed
from healing to suffering, He lost almost everybody. When He changed from
a Jewish-only Church to a Gentile-Jewish Church, Jesus lost some. Jesus
changed sides of the lake through Vatican II's challenge to the laity and
lost many people. In the USA, Jesus has changed from helping an immigrant
Church survive to evangelizing our church, neighborhoods, country, and
world. Many people find themselves left behind, on the wrong side of the
lake.

How do we know when Jesus changes sides? If we're working for perishable
food (see Jn 6:27), if we're focused on ourselves, we're probably on the
wrong side. However, if we're walking by faith and not by sight (2 Cor
5:7), we're probably on the same side as is Jesus (see Jn 6:29).

Prayer: Father, may I change sides from a pleasure-seeking, self-centered
lifestyle to a Christ-centered lifestyle of service, self- denial, and
evangelization.

Promise: "Stephen...was a man filled with grace and power, who worked
great wonders and signs among the people." —Acts 6:8

Praise: Robert used his gift of language to serve God by leading worship
in Latin, English, and Spanish.

(Did you know the "40-day Discipleship Program" has the goal of forming
mature Christians who are deeply rooted in the imitation of Jesus? These
newly formed disciples will go out to make disciples of all nations (Mt
28:19) and thereby form a new "civilization of love" (Pope Paul VI). The
program begins June 27 and is followed by the Bible Institute in late
July. For more information, call 937-587-5464 or 513-373-2397.)

PM eNewsletter Third Sunday of Easter

April 26th Third Sunday of Easter

Jesus, Easter and Divine Mercy Sundays have passed, and now
we are back to the daily ways of life.

But Jesus, in You there isn't any ordinary ways of life.

We are called to be new creations, we are called to be on fire
with love for You and graced to help others.

Jesus, never let us feel ordinary, but let us feel as new vessals
of love, joy and peace.

Lord, let us spread Your love to others, by how we live.

Lord, let us draw others to You by our examples of love, joy
and peace.

Jesus, remind us that we are pilgrims on a journey through
life that is leading us to Your heavenly home.

Let us not be so concerned and worried, about the pressures
of life, but, see Your love and help in all situations.

Thank You Jesus. Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday SIN RUINS THE PARTY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=4/26/2009

"He is an Offering for our sins, and not for our sins only, but
for those of the whole world." —1 John 2:2

The Easter season is a fifty-day Sunday, according to St. Athanasius.
Throughout the Easter season the Lord wants to move us from grace
to grace (Jn 1:16, JB) as we "are being transformed from glory to glory
into His very image by the Lord Who is the Spirit" (2 Cor 3:18).

This may seem like an unrealistic description of Easter. Many people,
even Christians, have long since forgotten about Easter 2009, although
liturgically we've only just begun to celebrate the risen Christ. Our
spirit
of celebration may be stifled because of sin. When we refuse to repent
of sin, we go back into the death of the tomb. We withdraw from the
resurrection-life.

"Therefore, reform your lives! Turn to God, that your sins may be wiped
away!" (Acts 3:19) "I am writing this to keep you from sin. But if anyone
should sin, we have, in the presence of the Father, Jesus Christ, an
Intercessor Who is just. He is an Offering for our sins, and not for our
sins only, but for those of the whole world" (1 Jn 2:1-2). Confession,
the Sacrament of Reconciliation, is an Easter sacrament (see Jn 20:23).
Repent, go to Confession, and celebrate the whole Easter Season now
and forever.

· Through the New Testament in Easter
http://presentationministries.com/brochures/NTEaster.asp
After Jesus rose from the dead, He spent the afternoon walking
almost seven miles with two disciples. On this walk, Jesus
interpreted for them every passage of the Scriptures which
referred to Him (Lk 24:27). On the evening of that first Easter
Sunday, Jesus opened the apostles' minds to the understanding
of the Scriptures (Lk 24:45). Jesus made it clear from the several
hours He spent in the word on the first resurrection-day that
believing deeply in His resurrection and hearing God's word
were interrelated.

With this in mind, I invite you to read the whole New Testament
in the fifty-day Easter season. The Lord will give you the grace
to be faithful to this discipline. Ask and you shall receive (Mt 7:7).

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official teachings
of the Roman Catholic Church

RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS

"URGENT CALL"
The exhortation of Jesus to His disciples: "Pray therefore the Lord of the
harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" (Mt 9:38) has a constant
resonance in the Church. Pray! The urgent call of the Lord stresses that
prayer for vocations should be continuous and trusting.

FAITH, HOPE AND PRAYER
The Christian community can only really "have ever greater faith and hope
in God's providence" (Sacramentum Caritatis, 26) if it is enlivened by
prayer.

"A SPECIAL GIFT OF GOD"
The vocation to the priesthood and to the consecrated life constitutes a
special gift of God which becomes part of the great plan of love and
salvation that God has for every man and woman and for the whole of
humanity.

SIN RUINS THE PARTY - One Bread, One Body, 4/26/2009

Sunday, April 26, 2009, Third Sunday of Easter

Acts 3:13-15, 17-19, 1 John 2:1-5, Psalm 4, Luke 24:35-48

SIN RUINS THE PARTY

"He is an Offering for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for those
of the whole world." —1 John 2:2

The Easter season is a fifty-day Sunday, according to St. Athanasius.
Throughout the Easter season the Lord wants to move us from grace to grace
(Jn 1:16, JB) as we "are being transformed from glory to glory into His
very image by the Lord Who is the Spirit" (2 Cor 3:18).

This may seem like an unrealistic description of Easter. Many people, even
Christians, have long since forgotten about Easter 2009, although
liturgically we've only just begun to celebrate the risen Christ. Our
spirit of celebration may be stifled because of sin. When we refuse to
repent of sin, we go back into the death of the tomb.

Confession, the
Sacrament of Reconciliation, is an Easter sacrament (see Jn 20:23).
Repent, go to Confession, and celebrate the whole Easter Season now and
forever.

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to convict me of my sins today (Jn 16:8).

Promise: "Whoever keeps His word, truly has the love of God been made
perfect in him." —1 Jn 2:5

Praise: Alleluia! Praise the risen Jesus, Who reigns now in glory!

FORGIVENESS AND GREATNESS - One Bread, One Body, 4/25/2009

Saturday, April 25, 2009, St. Mark

1 Peter 5:5-14, Psalm 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17, Mark 16:15-20
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/042509.shtml

FORGIVENESS AND GREATNESS

"The church that is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you
greetings, as does Mark my son. Greet one another with the embrace of true
love. Peace." —1 Peter 5:13-14

John Mark quit the first missionary journey (Acts 13:13). It may have been
the biggest mistake he'd ever made. When he realized his mistake, he asked
Paul to give him a second chance and take him on the second mission. "But
Paul insisted that, as he had deserted them at Pamphylia, refusing to join
them on that mission, he was not fit to be taken along now" (Acts 15:38).
Surely it hurt Mark to be called "unfit" for ministry (see Lk 9:62).
Barnabas, Mark's cousin (Col 4:10), also took offense at Paul's evaluation
of Mark. "The disagreement which ensued was so sharp that the two
separated. Barnabas took Mark along with him and sailed for Cyprus" (Acts
15:39).

Paul and John Mark could have gone through life and even through death
bitter and unforgiving toward each other. But the good news is that they
reconciled. Paul later tells Timothy: "Get Mark and bring him with you,
for he can be of great service to me" (2 Tm 4:11). Mark, once "unfit," is
now considered "of great service."

Instead of bitterness and unforgiveness, Paul had a love for Mark which
prompted him to command the Colossians to make Mark welcome (Col 4:10).
Paul, the great missionary and apostle, and Mark, the earliest
Gospel-writer, were among the most important people in human history. But
this would never have happened if they hadn't forgiven each other.

Prayer: Father, I decide to accept Your grace to forgive everyone for
everything immediately.

Promise: "The Lord continued to work with them throughout and confirm the
message through the signs which accompanied them." —Mk 16:20

Praise: St. Mark was called at a young age to do great things for Christ.

THE CHURCH IS FROM GOD

"If their purpose or activity is human in its origins, it will destroy
itself. If, on the other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to
destroy them." —Acts 5:38-39

The apostles had been arrested for teaching the people of Jerusalem about
Jesus. They were brought to trial before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish
"Supreme Court." The apostles stood their ground and declared they would
continue teaching about Jesus, and would obey God rather than men (Acts
5:29). "When the Sanhedrin heard this, they were stung to fury and wanted
to . Then a member of the Sanhedrin stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a
teacher of the law highly regarded by all the people. He had the accused
ordered out of court for a few minutes, and then said to the assembly,
'…Have nothing to do with these men. Let them alone. If their purpose
or activity is human in its origins, it will destroy itself. If, on the
other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them
without fighting God Himself' " (Acts 5:33-35, 38-39).

We who live in the twenty-first century should stop and think about the
origins of Christianity. We are asked to give our lives to a Man condemned
to death, the equivalent of being put to death today in the electric
chair. His main followers were a group of uneducated fishermen. Yet we
moderners still continue to follow this Man two thousand years later. This
is a great testament to the truth that Jesus is God and His Church is led
by the Holy Spirit.

Gamaliel's words echo strongly today, just as they did to the Sanhedrin.
Gamaliel and St. Luke are telling us that the Church comes from God. Pour
your heart and your life into God's Church.

Prayer: "Lord, remember Your church throughout the world; make us grow in
love together with" our Pope, bishops, and clergy.

Promise: "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of
the living." —Ps 27:13

Praise: St. Fidelis poured his heart into God's people by taking special
care of the sick.

Unbelieving Believers

Weekly Feature
Unbelieving Believers
Source: Charlotte Gambill Scanlon
Before our last Cherish conference, God directed me to tell the women just
how much he believed in them. As God impressed this on my heart, I
questioned it because it sounded so obvious, so simple. Then over the next
few weeks God took me on a journey to teach me that I actually had no idea
just how much he believes in me. I had to understand the depth within this
seemingly simple truth before I could share it with anyone else.

The conference has come and gone but I am left with the lingering impact of
ministering this truth. I receive regular letters and e-mails describing how
this truth has dawned on people and changed their world. People are changing
their location, jobs, relationships and more. This truth is changing lives!
People are grasping the truth that all of heaven believes in them and that
this is no fleeting or circumstantial thing but a foundational, consistent
and empowering belief that energises them to live their dreams.

Do you know how much God believes in you? He believes in you absolutely. He
believes in your potential and ability; he believes that you are perfectly
equipped to do all he has destined for your life.

Created in his image
God created you in his own 'image and likeness'.1 He effectively gave you
his DNA in creating you to be like him. He then believed in mankind so much
that he gave you authority and dominion over every other living creature on
the planet.2 This is how much almighty God believes in you.

These are awesome truths known by most Christians but for many the
realisation of what they are reading and hearing has not come home to their
hearts. How do I know? By observing how many Christians live their lives as
victims rather than as people made in God's image with a dominion mandate.
You see, knowing the Scriptures is not enough, you have to really believe
them and be able to point to where they are working in your world.

The problem we have in the church today is that we have lots of believers
who are actually unbelievers. There is an epidemic of unbelieving believers.
'Believer' is not just a term used to describe people who come to Christ, it
is a term that is supposed to characterise the rest of our lives with God.
Believers believe in God and what he then says about them, their destiny,
future and purpose in life.

God believes in you but do you believe he does? Do you really believe that
the promises in the Bible apply to you? Do you really believe that you are
chosen, that you have the ability to heal the sick, meet people's needs and
make a difference? Or are you just another unbelieving believer?

Unbelieving disciples
Is it really possible to be close to God, to be in his House, raise your
hands in worship and yet still be an unbelieving believer? Yes, even Jesus'
disciples struggled with this issue.3 He gave them authority to heal the
sick and cast out demons, which they went out and did. Yet only a few
chapters later, faced with a similar situation we find them in fear and
confusion because a demon would not come out. Consequently, the father of
the demon possessed boy brought his son to Jesus. A situation was developing
where those who were supposed to help carry the load for Jesus were creating
more work for him because of their unbelief. And the same is true in many
churches. Leaders are being worn out because people around them give in to
doubt and negativity; their unbelief renders them ineffective against the
enemy and imposes a burden on the church.

Note how Jesus responded. He first healed the boy but then expressed his
disappointment with the disciples; he called them an 'unbelieving and
perverse generation'. Later they asked him what had gone wrong. His response
was simple: 'Because you have so little faith.'4

The disciples were close to Jesus, did life with him, had been chosen by him
and were given authority by him, yet they still had unbelief in their heart.
They were unbelieving believers in that situation and that is why I do not
presume for one minute that this is something we have mastered. For if the
closeness of the disciples to Jesus didn't eradicate their unbelief, how
much more must we the church remain aware of this potential footbrake on our
life and ministries.

Yoked to unbelief
'Do not be yoked with unbelievers'5 taught the Apostle Paul. Though normally
used to describe relationships between Christian and non-Christians, I
believe this scripture has a wider wisdom to pass on in our present context.
If there are unbelieving believers out there, you should not be yoked with
them either! In fact some unbelieving believers will do more damage to your
walk with God than a sinner ever could. It is far more subtle and pervasive.
It evidences itself in seemingly innocent questions, in a 'Did God really
say?' comment which then allows unbelief to settle on you and sow its
destructive seeds.

Never allow your life to be manipulated by unbelieving believers, by those
who every time you even mention stepping out to do something for God are
quick to express their concerns cloaked as 'Christian counsel'. Instead,
yoke your life to believing believers, who may see the problems but their
belief in the promise silences all doubt or unbelief.

Believing and doing together
So, how do you know if you are a believing believer? By what you do.
Believers are doers. Belief is a motivator, it is a force that energises
people to do something. Belief gets things done.

Take Gideon for example. He thought he was the weakest of the weak when God
came and called him a 'mighty warrior' but God was just expressing how much
he believed in him. His next command was then 'Go in the strength you have
and save Israel'.6 Belief energised him into action.

Moses' first response to God's command to go and deliver Israel from Egypt
was 'I can't do it'. But as God affirmed 'I believe that you can do this',
Moses began to believe he was believed in and this motivated him to action.7
God didn't spend a long time reassuring Moses because if God says you can do
it he expects you to believe it too. Your questioning suggests that God's
belief in you is misplaced but God knows you better than you know yourself;
he knows you can do it!

God spoke to Noah and effectively said, 'I believe in you and my favour is
on your life. Now I want you to go and build me an ark because I am going to
send rain to flood the earth.'8 Noah had never seen rain before and had no
idea what an ark was but he still went and built one. God's expression of
belief in him motivated him to extraordinary action.

All these men accomplished incredible things from just one encounter with
God. They had a revelation of just how much God believed in them, it went so
deep into their hearts that they came away from their encounter hearing
'nothing is impossible' and believing it enough to try the impossible. And
God has got some amazing things for you to do too. But you will never
accomplish them unless you take God seriously and believe him when he says
he wants to use you.

'What good is it my brothers if someone claims to have faith but has no
deeds?' said James.9 Faith always has a corresponding action. So, do you
believe that you are to love your enemies? Where then is your corresponding
behaviour? Do you believe that you are salt and light to the world? Where
then is your involvement in society? Never say that you believe God if you
are not expressing it in action; to do so is self-deception and doesn't fool
God or anyone else in the long run.

Belief gets you out of the boat
One night as the disciples were crossing Lake Galilee, the weather turned
stormy. Then: 'During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them
walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake they
were terrified. "It's a ghost" they said, and cried out with fear. But Jesus
immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord if
it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he
said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came
towards Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to
sink, cried out, "Lord save me!"' 10

The reaction of the disciples that night illustrates four positions we can
find ourselves in when it comes to believing God:

1. The terrified disciple
If you are in the boat, then like the disciples you love God, are saved, you
go to church and are not a bad person. In the boat you have found a safe
place and you intend staying there. You don't like waves and commotion. But
suddenly, as with the disciples, a voice starts challenging where you are
at. It says, 'You can do more, be more and experience more than this. I'm
here'. God is calling you to a new level but you identify with the terrified
disciples in the boat.

Getting out of the boat can be frightening. It means embracing the unknown
and this tests your essential belief. The challenge is: do you believe that
the God of your boat is also the God of the unknown ocean? You may be scared
of moving on but all that hinders you is deciding whether or not you really
believe God when he says 'come' or not.

2. The inquisitive disciple
You may be in the boat but like Peter you immediately recognise God's voice.
Even though scared, you are inquisitive. Though surrounded by people who
refuse to get out of the boat, your heart is pounding and you know you will
have to do something about it. Like Peter your response is, 'if this is you,
tell me to come!' Jesus answered with one word, 'come'. He didn't explain
how to come or what to do, it was simply a test of belief.

If you know that God has asked you to do something, then stop hanging around
with the terrified unbelievers in the boat and change your environment by
stepping out.

3. The inquisitive disciple
Some of you are reading this and thinking, 'I've already got out of the boat'.
You made a decision, went for it and now you are walking on water. But
having decided to move forward into what God told you, doubts are now
creeping in. The waves of circumstance and disappointment are crashing
around you and you wonder whether it was a mistake.

To you God is saying 'Don't look at the waves, believe!' God hasn't changed
his mind, he still believes in you. It's just a storm and his belief in you
is stronger than any adversity you will face, so keep going.

Never let adverse circumstances alone determine whether you should continue
or not. Jesus promised his disciples that 'in this world you will have
trouble.'11 Your belief should strengthen with every storm you face because
fundamentally you are convinced that in Christ you have 'overcome the world'
and your destiny is secure in his hands.

4. The sinking disciple
And to all of you who feel like you are sinking fast I'd say two things.
First, well done for getting this far, and second, get back up and believe
again! Remember what got you out of the boat in the first place. Ask
yourself what's changed? God is still in control, he still believes in you
and is still calling you. To the sinking Peter Jesus reached out a hand and
caught him. To you he also says 'I'm here, why did you doubt?' Doubt will
sink your life every time. So, let any doubt be drowned out by your strong
belief.

Believers are first followers
Peter was a first follower. While the other disciples were afraid and stayed
in the boat, he heard the voice of God and responded. He got out the boat
first and became a first follower.

This can be frightening but Peter's belief in God meant he was the only
disciple who ever knew what it was like to walk on water. Like him, first
followers have some great experiences. First followers are always the ones
who do what God has said first. They launch the initiative, they write the
book and start the ministry. This is because they have a revelation of just
how much God believes in them; belief energises their world. Gideon, Moses,
Noah and Peter were all first followers. They understood that believing and
doing couldn't be separated. Today we need an army of Christians who are all
first followers.

God believes in you, loves you and you are special to him but are you
willing to get out of the boat? Peter is not remembered as the disciple who
sank, he is remembered for being the one who walked on water. Do you want to
be remembered for being a doubting Thomas or a first follower? The choice is
yours because God really believes in you!

SINFUL OBEDIENCE?

"Better for us to obey God than men!" —Acts 5:29

When the apostles disobeyed the religious authorities, they were arrested
and threatened with more severe punishments, even death. Peter and the
apostles responded: "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's
sight for us to obey you rather than God...Better for us to obey God than
men!" (Acts 4:19; 5:29) They implied that if they disobeyed God by obeying
man, they would stifle the Holy Spirit (1 Thes 5:19), because the Spirit
is given to those who obey God (Acts 5:32). Furthermore, disobedience to
God not only deprives us of the Spirit, but also of life. "Whoever
disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God" (Jn
3:36).

Clearly it is much better to obey God than man. If we disobey man, we may
suffer briefly, be imprisoned, or be killed. If we disobey God, a prison
can be put in us; we may be damned and suffer eternally. The Holy Spirit
will show us where in our society man's law contradicts God's. The Spirit
will show us how to oppose that most heinous law, the law legalizing
abortion. The Spirit will teach us how to disobey man's laws that
contradict God's.

Prayer: Father, show me how to practice "divine obedience," even when that
means civil disobedience.

Promise: "He does not ration His gift of the Spirit." —Jn 3:34

JAILBREAK

"Look, there! Those men you put in jail are standing over there in the
temple, teaching the people." —Acts 5:25

Many Christians don't seem to be able to get into the Spirit of the Easter
season because they stay trapped in compulsive behavior. They feel as if
they're in jail or in a tomb. Under these circumstances, how can they
celebrate Christ's resurrection?

The risen Jesus will roll away the stones of alcoholism, drug-addiction,
self-hatred, overeating, smoking, ion, sexual sins and fantasies,
compulsive shopping, , gossiping, and TV-watching. When Jesus
frees us from our prisons, He will command us: "Go out now and take your
place in the temple precincts and preach to the people all about this new
life" (Acts 5:20). Jesus frees us not only from slavery but also for
evangelization. He calls us to be living proof of the new life His
resurrection has made possible.

When other prisoners see that Jesus has freed us, at first some of them
will try to get us back to prison. But later they will believe in the
risen Christ and let Him also free them. Then many more people will be
living proofs of the resurrection, more and more people will be freed and
will proclaim the freedom of the risen Christ, and the world will believe.
Jesus promised: "I — once I am lifted up from earth — will draw all men to
Myself" (Jn 12:32). Repent! Let Jesus set you free.

Prayer: Jesus, may I tell thousands what You've done for me.

Promise: "Yes, God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that
whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." —Jn 3:16

Praise: Getting into the daily eucharistic Scripture readings helped David
know the risen Christ.

POWER OR PLAY?

"With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord
Jesus." —Acts 4:33

The Christian proclamation of the risen Jesus is often upstaged. Our
culture accomplishes this with the end of college basketball, the
beginning of professional baseball, or even by the Easter bunny,
marshmallow chicks, or chocolate rabbits. We Christians lose in the
competition for people's attention. We obviously lack power in bearing
witness to Jesus' resurrection. To have the power of the early Church in
witnessing for the risen Lord, we need to:
* be "of one heart and one mind" (Acts 4:32). True unity is a miracle
which can be done only by the risen Christ.
* hold our possessions in common and not claim things as our own (Acts
4:32, 34).

This seems insane to the typical Christian, but those in the world
instinctively know that if our economics aren't radically changed by the
risen Christ, we probably don't believe in Him much more than they do.
Unity and "common-unity" are telltale signs of what we really believe.

Jesus is praying now that we will be one as He and the Father are one so
the world will believe the Father sent Him (Jn 17:21). This is unity of
heart, mind, and possessions. It is laying everything at the feet of Jesus
and of the apostles (Acts 4:35, 37). It is not ownership but stewardship.
It is unity under the lordship of the risen Christ (see Eph 1:10).

Prayer: Father, may my life be unexplainable except for the fact of Jesus'
resurrection.

Promise: "The Son of Man must be lifted up, that all who believe may have
eternal life in Him." —Jn 3:14-15

Praise: St. Anselm asked for mercy from the Pope for the very king who had
exiled him from England.

Communities" or on audio tapes AV 76-1, AV 76-3 or video V-76.)

PM eNewsletter Divine Mercy Sunday

April 19th Divine Mercy Sunday

Jesus, how can we possibly understand Your love and mercy?

How can we in our frail human condition know the love that You have for us
tainted humans?

Yet, You do love us and have proven it by Your death and resurrection.

Jesus, give us the grace to come and sit in Your presense, before
Your Eucharist, and just feel the peace, and joy, and love that You have
for us.

Let us be filled with peace and make a new commitment to try to live
lives worthy of all the love You give us.

Let us love others as best we can and see You in all we deal with in life.

Lord, let us be totally Yours.
Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official teachings of the
Roman Catholic Church

YOUTH AND HOPE

"ABOUND IN HOPE"

The main task for us all is that of a new evangelization aimed
at helping younger generations to rediscover the true face of
God, Who is Love. To you ... who are in search of a firm hope,
I address the ... words that Saint Paul wrote ...: "May the God
of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you
may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

PEOPLE OF HOPE

Prayer is the gift of the Spirit that makes us men and women of
hope, and our prayer keeps the world open to God ...

"WITNESSES TO THE RISEN CHRIST"

Follow the example of Paul and be witnesses to the Risen Christ!
Make Christ known...to those who are in search of "the great
hope" that would give meaning to their lives.

Sunday, April 19, 2009, Second Sunday of Easter, Mercy Sunday

Acts 4:32-35, 1 John 5:1-6, Psalm 118, John 20:19-31

THE RESURRECTION COMMUNITY

"The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them
ever claimed anything as his own; rather, everything was held in
common." —Acts 4:32

If we have everything in common with others, except our faith in the risen
Christ, we are alien to each other. If we live in almost totally different
worlds but have one thing in common, our faith in the risen Christ, then
we are brothers and sisters, members of Christ's body.

Believing in and living for the risen Christ means more than everything
else put together. For example, an elderly, affluent Christian business
person will have a deeper sense of community with a young, impoverished,
Tanzanian, Christian farmer than with non-Christian business partners.

Our faith in the risen Christ should motivate us to want to share daily
community life with others who have also been transformed by the risen
Jesus. We want to share the Bible, the Eucharist, time, prayer, material
possessions, and meals (see Acts 2:42-46). Because we share a faith in the
risen Christ, we want to share even "our very lives" (1 Thes 2:8).

The normal desire for community life with those who also believe in the
risen Christ is stifled by sin, unforgiveness, fear, and doubt. In this
state, we have more in common with the secular world than with believers
in the risen Christ. We must believe, repent, and then live the normal,
radical, risen community life called for by faith in the risen Christ.

Prayer: "Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He Who in
His great mercy gave us new birth; a birth unto hope which draws its life
from the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Pt 1:3).

Promise: "Receive the Holy Spirit." —Jn 20:22

Praise: Praise Jesus, Whose love and mercy has conquered both sin and
sinner!
