A Season of Oppurtunity

A season of opportunity

Source: Christine Caine

The holidays are filled with many things – family, friends and FOOD just to name a few. I happen to love food, all food, but I especially love Greek food! It really is the best in the world, and I'm not just saying that because it is the cuisine of my people.

It's simply a fact (at least I my opinion).

Much to my delight, I have the opportunity to eat Greek meals in restaurants all over the world because I travel so much; and while some are better than others, they all pale in comparison to the Greek food that is made by the hands of my mum. Her cooking really is the best in the world, and I'm not just saying that because she is my mother. It's simply a fact (at least in my opinion). There just is nothing like her home-cooked moussaka, yemista, taramosalata or Greek salad.

I cannot reveal to you the secret of her recipes that have been handed down for many generations, because then I'd have to kill you. I can, however, share this cooking tip of hers with you: Mum always says, "Christine, the right amount of salt is the definitive factor in the making of every great meal." Too little salt, and the meal is unmemorable and the guests leave full but still unsatisfied. Too much salt, and everyone's lips get that pruned feeling – and the next morning they can't remove the rings from their hands because their fingers are fat, bloated little sausages. It's hared to get those guest to come back a second time. Not good.

Jesus told us that we are the salt of the earth and we need to ensure that we are deliberately and carefully seasoning the world around us properly. Too little, and the people with whom we have relationships leave our presence glad to have seen us, but still feeling unsatisfied in their souls. Too much, and they are repelled – and it's very difficult to get a second chance to witness to them.

We are all called to bring out the "God flavours" in our part of the world, and we are each responsible for the "taste of God we leave with others.

This holiday season I want to encourage you to be looking for opportunities where you can be salt. Whether it be at work, home or gathered around the Christmas dinner table, this is your season to bring out the God flavours in your world!

"O HOLY NIGHT"

"If you consider the holiness that is His, you can be sure that everyone
who acts in holiness has been begotten by Him." —1 John 2:29

One of the main purposes of the Christmas season is to grow in holiness —
to become more like God, to take on God's character. This holy Christmas
time begins a holy year in a holy life, which begins a holy eternal life.
The Lord has created us to be holy as He is holy (see 1 Jn 3:3), to be
"perfect in holiness" (1 Thes 5:23). We should "hunger and thirst for
holiness" (Mt 5:6) and seek first God's way of holiness (Mt 6:33). We must
strive "for that holiness without which no one can see the Lord" (Heb
12:14).

The Lord expects "perfect" holiness from us because He has given us the
power to become holy. Because we have been begotten by Him through faith
and baptism, we have a new nature by which we can live a holy life (1 Jn
2:29). Even if we fall into temptation and live according to our old
sinful nature, we can repent and be washed clean in Jesus' blood.

Finally, the Father and the Son have given us the third Person of the
Trinity, the Holy Spirit, Who makes us holy. Because of new life in the
waters of baptism, forgiveness through Jesus' blood shed on Calvary, and
the indwelling of the Spirit, the Lord expects us to be holy as He is
holy. Have a holy Christmas season.

Prayer: Father, may my desire for holiness be stronger than my desire for
pleasure.

Promise: "When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He
Who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit." —Jn 1:33

Praise: Frequent Confession and Holy Communion help Peter remain
constantly open to the Holy Spirit.

BODY PARTS

"Who are you?" —John 1:19

Throughout this year, we will be continually challenged with the question:
"Who are you?" The correct answer is: "I am a part of the body of Christ"
(see Rm 12:5; 1 Cor 12:13). Our true identity is based on our relationship
with Christ (see Col 2:17).

An even better answer is to state the specific part of the body of Christ
which you are. For example, John the Baptizer said he was a voice in
Christ's body (Jn 1:23). You may be Christ's feet, hands, ears, or mind.
It's ideal to know not only which part of Christ's body you are but also
how the Lord primarily works through you. A voice can do several things —
teach, sell, threaten, encourage, warn, etc. John knew that the main thing
the Lord did through his voice was to cry out: "Make straight the way of
the Lord!" (Jn 1:23)

Who are you? Who are you not? Which part of Christ's body are you? What is
the primary way the Lord works through you? If, by the Spirit, you can
answer these questions, you will know yourself as John the Baptizer knew
himself. This will put you in the position to be used mightily by the Lord
as John was. If you know who you are in Christ, this can be the greatest
year of your life. Commit your life to Jesus and let the Spirit teach you
(Jn 14:26).

Prayer: Father, may I know myself in Jesus and love myself in the Spirit.

Promise: "He Himself made us a promise and the promise is no less than
this: eternal life." —1 Jn 2:25

Praise: St. Basil, his parents, and several brothers and sisters were such
profound members of the Body of Christ that they are all canonized saints.

"SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE"

"The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!" —Numbers 6:26

When the Jewish people came to the Temple, the priests blessed them with
peace. At the birth of Jesus, the angels sang: "Glory to God in the
highest and peace on earth" (Lk 2:14, our translation). Before His death,
Jesus bequeathed peace to the apostles (Jn 14:27). Paul claimed that Jesus
is our Peace (Eph 2:14; Mi 5:4). At Fatima in 1917, Mary exhorted and
prophesied that we must pray for peace. We hear of Mary at Medjugorje
identifying herself as the Queen of Peace. Over thirty years ago, Pope
Paul VI set aside this first day of the year as a special day of prayer
for peace and justice.

For centuries, and now more than ever, the Lord has emphasized that we
need the fruit of the Spirit, that is, peace (Gal 5:22). We can be racked
with pain and close to death, but if we have peace, somehow life's still
worth living. We can be rejected, divorced, and abused, but even in such a
state, there can be an overshadowing peace "beyond all understanding"
(Phil 4:7).

Without peace, however, even minor aches, pains, and problems seem
insurmountable. If we have peace, 2008 will be a great year, no matter
what. Without peace, this year will be an exercise in futility. Come, Holy
Spirit of peace. Queen of peace, pray for us.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, cry out in my heart "Abba" (Gal 4:6). May I know I'm
a beloved child of God. May I let go of all unforgiveness, resentment,
jealousy, and bitterness.

Promise: "Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her
heart." —Lk 2:19

Praise: The greeting the risen Jesus gave His disciples was "Peace be with
you" (Jn 20:19). Alleluia to the Prince of Peace (Is 9:5).
