TRIPLE PLAY
"Jesus said to all: 'Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in My steps.' " -Luke 9:23
In the above Scripture verse, Jesus speaks of a three-part process to becoming His disciple:
* Deny ourselves. The first requirement of being a follower of Jesus, that is, His disciple, is to deny our very self. Self-denial is not unusual, even among non-Christians. "Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown" (1 Cor 9:25). People deny themselves in order to make a fortune, build a business, etc. Of course, Jesus is referring to much more than acts of self-denial; He calls us to deny ourself at the deepest core of our being, so that our identity lies in Him alone.
* Take up your crosses daily. Again, this can be done by non-Christians. Caregivers, parents of disabled children, farmers, and others bear their crosses daily. Christ's followers are called to bear suffering and difficulties willingly, innocently, and with forgiving hearts.
* Follow in Jesus' steps. Following Jesus is what distinguishes the disciple. A disciple goes where Jesus goes, loves who He loves, and obeys His commandments. Jesus said: "Where I am, there will My servant be" (Jn 12:26). Jesus went without a place to lay His head (Lk 9:58) and chose the will of God rather than His own (Lk 22:42). He loved His enemies and even gave His life for them.
Deny your very self, take up your cross daily, and follow Jesus to and through the cross. Choose to be a disciple of Jesus.
Prayer: Father, may I be Jesus' disciple and "make disciples" who may then make disciples of others (see Mt 28:19).
Promise: "Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live." -Dt 30:19
Praise: Sarah forgave her alcoholic father and joined him at Mass.

RE-LENT, RE-TURN AND REPENT
"...relenting in punishment. Perhaps He will again relent and leave behind Him a blessing." -Joel 2:13-14
Joel proclaims in today's first Ash Wednesday reading that God will relent on the punishment we have earned by the wages of our sins (Rm 6:23), if we return to Him with our whole heart (Jl 2:12). As Lent begins, the Church urges us to implore God to relent and have mercy on us (Ps 51:3), forgive our sins, and bring us back to Him.
God also implores us to "re-lent," that is, to enter year after year into the spirit of Lent with our whole heart. He tells us through the prophet Joel to "re-turn" to Him and "quit" the ways of the world, even those which might be good (Jl 2:16), for His sake. Through the Church, He calls us to "turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel." We don't just turn away from worldly things; we turn to the Lord God.
Re-Lenting and re-turning must lead to repenting. During Lent, focus on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. With true sorrow, repent of your sins, confess them to the Lord, and let Him take away the guilt of your sin (see Ps 32:5). Repent of turning to the lifestyle of the world and the preoccupations of the flesh. Return to Him (Jl 2:13). Abandon yourself completely into this season of returning, repenting, and relenting. The Lord says: "Return to Me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God" (Jl 2:12-13).
This year, don't simply go through the exercises and motions of Lent. Re-lent, repent, and re-turn to the Lord.
Prayer: Jesus, reconcile me to Your Father (2 Cor 5:20).
Promise: "Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!" -2 Cor 6:2
Praise: During Lent, Bill, a vice-president in a large corporation, skips his daily lunch hour to go to noon Mass.

"JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON" - One Bread, One Body, 3/4/2014

"JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON"
"Do not yield to the desires that once shaped you in your ignorance." -1 Peter 1:14
Lent begins tomorrow with the ashes of Ash Wednesday. It's common to hear people plan parties for tonight with huge amounts of sweets and other pleasures. After all, the thinking goes, we won't be able to enjoy ourselves again until Easter.
It's true that Lent is a season to focus on acts of self-denial. Self-denial, however, is not unique to Christians. Athletes (1 Cor 9:25), pregnant women, soldiers (2 Tm 2:4), dieters, Buddhists, and others often perform heroic acts of self-denial that make giving up chocolate for the forty days of Lent pale in comparison.
Our Lenten sacrifices must help us grow deeply in our relationship with Jesus. Our Lenten crosses, when joined to the sufferings of Jesus (1 Pt 4:13; Col 1:24; Phil 1:29), become acts of penance and reparation. Will your Lenten self-denials simply be acts of self-improvement, or will they help you to "draw close to God" (Jas 4:8)? Is your goal to "make it" to Easter with no failures, or is your goal to be united with the crucified Jesus out of love for Him?
As for not being able to "enjoy ourselves" again until Easter, when we draw close to Jesus in a spirit of repentance, we will find a joy that is heavenly (Lk 15:7, 10), "full" (Jn 16:24), and "inexpressible" (1 Pt 1:8). No Mardi Gras party can begin to compare with sharing in Jesus' joy. So why wait until tomorrow to "draw close to God"? Turn to Jesus today.
Prayer: Jesus, may I be so consumed with love of You that I don't even notice the pleasures of the world.
Promise: "There is no one who has given up home, brothers or sisters, mother or father, children or property, for Me and for the gospel who will not receive in this present age a hundred times as many." -Mk 10:29-30
Praise: St. Casimir was a conscientious objector who even as a teenager lived a highly disciplined, severe lifestyle.

THE CROSS OF BEING RICH - One Bread, One Body, 3/3/2014

THE CROSS OF BEING RICH
"The man's face fell. He went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!' " -Mark 10:22-23
Most people in the USA are rich by historical and international standards. Whether or not we are rich, we are "falling into temptation and a trap" if we even want to be rich (1 Tm 6:9). We are letting ourselves "be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction" (1 Tm 6:9). It's not wrong to be rich but wrong to want to be rich.
"It is easier for a camel to pass through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Mk 10:25). Therefore, we should be reluctant to be rich and do so only if the Lord insists on it. If we are rich, we must be good and faithful servants of the Lord (Mt 25:21), Who is the Owner of all the possessions and money which He has entrusted to us. We must tithe, give alms, and give sacrificially. Some think this will prevent them from staying rich. However, the Lord always outgives us. So those rich who are good servants of the Lord often get richer (see Mt 25:28). Occasionally, the Lord will let a rich person divest themselves of their responsibilities of stewardship. He gives them more freedom and puts them in a position less dangerous to their salvation.
Therefore, give "good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over" (Lk 6:38). This may get you out of being rich. However, if giving makes you richer, take up your cross of being rich, responsible, and endangered, and be a faithful steward.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me (Jn 14:26) how to be poor (Mt 5:3).
Promise: "You may for a time have to suffer the distress of many trials; but this is so that your faith, which is more precious than the passing splendor of fire-tried gold, may by its genuineness lead to praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ appears." -1 Pt 1:6-7
Praise: St. Katharine used her great wealth to lead American Indians and African-Americans to new life and hope in Christ.

PM eNewsletter The 8th Sunday of ordinary time
March 2nd 8th Sunday in ordinary time
Jesus, as we receive ashes this Wednesday, let it truly remind us
that we are born into this life as a pilgrim on a journey to get
us into true life, eternal life, with You.
Lord, let us see in the ashes, our reminder to life in, to and
through, You, in everything.
Let us see that we were baptized into kinship with You, and that
someday, we will enter that heavenly kingdom, where we will rejoice
and praise the triune God forever.
Jesus, let us never fear death, but see it as a natural progression
to get us into Your eternal presence.
Let us prepare for our home coming this Lent.
Amen and Amen.
Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body
This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday SOCIAL INSECURITY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=3/2/2014
"Your heavenly Father knows all that you need. Seek first His kingship over you, His way of
holiness, and all these things will be given you besides." -Matthew 6:32-33
Are you secure in God's love? Are you sure that, even if a mother forgets her infant, the
Lord would never forget you? (Is 49:15) If you lost your job, would you worry? If you
didn't know where your next meal was coming from, would you be upset? Do you believe that
your heavenly Father is a real Father Who provides for His family? Do you feel so insured
by being a child of God that having man's insurance would be superfluous or even a means of
doubting God's providence?
We can't serve two masters; we should not worry but trust God for our basic needs (Mt 6:24).
Many of today's Christians have placed themselves in the most insecure situation possible,
that is, depending on themselves for security.
Prayer: Jesus, may I lose my life so You can save me (Lk 9:24).
Promise: "The Lord is the One to judge me, so stop passing judgment before the time of His
return." -1 Cor 4:4-5
Praise: Praise You, Jesus! Your dependence on the Father set us free to abandon ourselves to
His care. Thank You, Father!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
THE GIFT OF LIFE
"THANK THE LORD"
... Let us thank the Lord for the gift of life in all its forms, and at the same time let
us proclaim the Gospel of Life.
"POINTS OF MEDITATION"
... I would like to offer you three simple points of meditation for our faith: first, the
Bible reveals to us the Living God, the God who is life and the source of life; second,
Jesus Christ bestows life and the Holy Spirit maintains us in life; and third, following
God's way leads to life, whereas following idols leads to death.
REALITY SHOW
The Bible shows us the human drama in all its reality: good and evil, passion, sin and its
consequences. Whenever we want to assert ourselves, when we become wrapped up in our own
selfishness and put ourselves in the place of God, we end up spawning death.

Promise: "The Lord is the One to judge me, so stop passing judgment before the time of His
return." -1 Cor 4:4-5
Praise: Praise You, Jesus! Your dependence on the Father set us free to abandon ourselves to
His care. Thank You, Father!
Monday THE CROSS OF BEING RICH
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=3/3/2014
"The man's face fell. He went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and
said to His disciples, 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!' " -Mark 10:22-23
Tuesday "JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON"

"This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it" (Ps 118:24). It's beyond our power to imagine what the Lord can do with this day (see Eph 3:20). He can make this day as eventful as a thousand years (2 Pt 3:8).
Today we can pray in faith and heal the sick (Jas 5:15). Like Elijah, today we can dramatically change our economy and government by the power of prophecy and prayer (see Jas 5:17-18). Today we can bring back sinners strayed from the truth. This will save them and us "from death and cancel a multitude of sins" (Jas 5:20).
Today "is the day of salvation!" (2 Cor 6:2) Today we can leap forward in our relationship with the Lord and our service to Him. We can go to sleep tonight and say we've never loved the Lord more than we do today. We can repent of every sin, obey every command, and grow more in this one day than we have grown in months. Today can be a day we'll never forget simply because we have decided to love the Lord today and every day with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds (Lk 10:27).
Prayer: Father, one day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere (Ps 84:11).
Promise: "I assure you that whoever does not accept the reign of God like a little child shall not take part in it." -Mk 10:15
Praise: Carol has taught hundreds of children the joys of the Faith in her years of teaching religious education.
