GOD CALLING

"The Lord called to Samuel." —1 Samuel 3:4

The Lord promises us: "Call to Me, and I will answer you; I will tell to
you things great beyond reach of your knowledge" (Jer 33:3). The Lord
wants to reveal His love and Himself to us so much that He even became a
human being, sent the Holy Spirit to teach us, gave us the Bible, and
founded His Church as "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15).

Despite the Lord's desire to communicate with us, "a revelation of the
Lord" is "uncommon and vision infrequent" (1 Sm 3:1) for many people, even
Christians. Some are "not familiar with the Lord, because the Lord" has
not revealed anything to them as yet (1 Sm 3:7). Moreover, when someone
does hear the Lord, the leadership of the Church is sometimes so weak that
it doesn't encourage the person to respond to the Lord (see 1 Sm 3:6).
Nonetheless, even under these unfavorable circumstances, the Lord will
still communicate with us "things great beyond reach" of our knowledge.

As we begin this new year, let's ask the Lord what we should do before we
make the tragic mistake of doing our own thing. Jesus began His days by
rising early and going off to a lonely place in the desert where He was
absorbed in prayer (Mk 1:35). Let's begin our year in a similar way.

Prayer: Speak, Father, for Your servant is listening (1 Sm 3:9).

Promise: "Let us move on to the neighboring villages so that I may
proclaim the good news there also. That is what I have come to do." —Mk
1:38

Praise: St. Hilary was exiled twice for refuting the Arian heresy which
claimed that Jesus was only human. During his second exile, to the East,
Hilary wrote so convincingly that Jesus was God that his heretical Eastern
hosts, seeing how Hilary was defeating their cause, persuaded the Emperor
to send Hilary back home.

ORDINARY AND NEW - One Bread, One Body, 1/12/2010

Tuesday, January 12, 2010, St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, (Canada)

1 Samuel 1:9-20, 1 Samuel 2:1, 4-8, Mark 1:21-28
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/011210.shtml

ORDINARY AND NEW

"A completely new teaching..." —Mark 1:27

We begin the portion of the Church year called "Ordinary Time," which
means "ordered time" rather than "humdrum time." Today's eucharistic
readings proclaim that "ordinary" life in the Lord is new, exciting, and
fulfilling. For example, the citizens of Capernaum were "amazed" at Jesus
and His "completely new teaching in a spirit of authority" (Mk 1:27). In
today's first reading, Hannah and Elkanah could not conceive a child; now
they rejoiced (1 Sm 2:1ff) at the new life she conceived (1 Sm 1:20).

Perhaps you've suffered through a long, dry spell, and this year looks
like more of the same. However, this ordinary time is a time for a new
beginning, a fresh start. The Lord declares: "Remember not the events of
the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something
new!" (Is 43:18-19)

God is the Creator, and He is always creating anew. The Spirit renews,
that is, makes new, the earth (Ps 104:30). Be open to God's "completely
new" works this year in your parenting, marriage, childbearing, couple or
family prayer, vocation, job performance, personal holiness, Christian
community, evangelization, studies, etc. This is the year to step out in
faith and live "the radical newness of" our Baptism (Lay Members of
Christ's Faithful People, Pope John Paul II, 10).

Jesus says: "See, I make all things new!" (Rv 21:5) Accept Jesus as Lord
of your life and be "a new creation" in Him (2 Cor 5:17). "All that
matters is that one is created anew" (Gal 6:15).

Prayer: Father, I "lay aside" my old way of life and my "old self," and
"put on that new" self You give me (Eph 4:22, 24).

Promise: "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have
asked of Him." —1 Sm 1:17

Praise: St. Marguerite's love for children led her to work with a hospital
in Montreal to significantly reduce the child mortality rate in the 17th
century.

THE YEAR OF REPENTANCE, FRUITFULNESS, AND JOY - One Bread, One Body, 1/11/2010

Monday, January 11, 2010

1 Samuel 1:1-8, Psalm 116:12-14, 17-19, Mark 1:14-20

THE YEAR OF REPENTANCE, FRUITFULNESS, AND JOY

"Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you refuse to eat? Why do you
grieve?" —1 Samuel 1:8

As we begin the new year, the Lord commands us to be "fishers of men" and
women (Mk 1:17). We are to be fruitful in leading others to Christ (see Jn
15:5). However, many of us were not very fruitful in 2009 and have not
changed anything for 2010. We may be spiritually barren as Hannah was
physically barren.

If we don't repent and begin to share our love for Jesus with other
people, we may become like Hannah in other ways. In addition to being
barren, Hannah was so depressed she refused to eat (1 Sm 1:7). We likewise
may lose our joy (see Ps 51:14) and become spiritually anorexic if we
don't bear fruit evangelistically. Many Christians today are noticeably
sad. Young people notice this and see church as a dead, joyless place.
Many Christians go to church only to fulfill their "Sunday obligation."
They aren't hungry for the spiritual nourishment of God's word and Holy
Communion.

We can be like Hannah in more ways than one. We must repent, commit our
lives to Jesus, and share our faith. Then we will come to life.

Prayer: Father, may I reap the greatest harvest this year.

Promise: "This is the time of fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand!
Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" —Mk 1:15

Praise: Regular Confession has helped Peter keep spiritually fit for
evangelization.

PM eNewsletter The baptism of the Lord

January 10th The baptism of the Lord

Jesus, You were baptised in the river Jordon by John the Baptist,
to show us all the value and need for baptism.

This sacrament truly makes us all sons and daughters of God.

What an amazing gift we receive.

Who can't truly understand Your love for us, that even though we
are naturally prone to sin, we are called to come above our human
condition and be Your brothers and sisters.

Help us to realize that Your love also calls us to live our baptismal
promises, to reject satan, and all evil spirits.

Help us to help. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday LOVE LASTS
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=1/10/2010

"You are My Beloved..." —Luke 3:22

On the last day of Christmas, my true Love, Jesus, gave to me
a deeper life in the Spirit. On the last day of Christmas, my true
Love, the Holy Spirit, cried out in my heart "Abba" ("Father")
(Gal 4:6). On the last day of Christmas, my true Love, God the
Father, revealed Jesus to me in a new way (Lk 10:22) and gave
me an even deeper life in the Spirit (Jn 14:16). On the last day
of Christmas, I was caught in the crossfire of the Trinity's love.
The Father spoke; Jesus saved; the Spirit descended.

Are you ready to "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth
and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience
this love which surpasses all knowledge, so that you may attain
to the fullness of God Himself"? (Eph 3:18-19) Are you ready to
be loved as the Father loves Jesus? (Jn 15:9) On this last day of
Christmas, will you let the love of God be poured out in your
heart through the Holy Spirit? (Rm 5:5)

"God is Love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God
in him" (1 Jn 4:16). Christmas is all about God's love. Make this
the day, the year, and the life of love.

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES

"PROPER ATTENTION"

I warmly hope that proper attention will be given to minor migrants
who need a social environment that permits and fosters their
physical, cultural, spiritual and moral development. Living in a
foreign land without effective points of reference generates
countless and sometimes serious hardships and difficulties for
them, especially those deprived of the support of their family.

"SOCIAL AND PASTORAL CHALLENGES"

While I express gratitude for all that is being done with great
generosity, I would like to invite all Christians to become aware
of the social and pastoral challenges posed by migrant and
refugee minors.

FOLLOWING JESUS

Jesus' words resound in our hearts "I was a stranger and you
welcomed Me"( Mt 25:35), as likewise the central commandment
He left us: to love God with all our heart, with all our soul and
with all our mind, but together with love of neighbor (cf Mt 22:37-39).

LOVE LASTS

"You are My Beloved..." —Luke 3:22

On the last day of Christmas, my true Love, Jesus, gave to me a deeper

Jesus? (Jn 15:9) On this last day of Christmas, will you let the love of
God be poured out in your heart through the Holy Spirit? (Rm 5:5)

"God is Love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him" (1
Jn 4:16). Christmas is all about God's love. Make this the day, the year,
and the life of love.

Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I live in Your love (Jn 15:10).
Thank You for the Christmas season.

Promise: "He saved us through the baptism of new birth and renewal by the
Holy Spirit." —Ti 3:5

ON THE THRESHOLD - One Bread, One Body, 1/9/2010

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/010910.shtml

ON THE THRESHOLD

"That is my joy, and it is complete." —John 3:29

Tomorrow, we will celebrate the grand finale of the Christmas season, the
feast of the Baptism of Jesus. This day can be a turning point in our
lives. "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned
on man what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Cor 2:9).

Because we stand on the threshold of such amazing grace, the evil one will
try to rob us. Some controversy may arise (see Jn 3:25), or we may be
tempted to envy someone's success (see Jn 3:26). We must refuse to let the
evil one use our pride to manipulate and rob us. With John the Baptizer,
we should proclaim: "[Jesus] must increase, while I must decrease" (Jn
3:30).

In these last hours of the Christmas season, we probably will enter into
spiritual warfare and amazing grace. We need to pray for each other and
for the whole body of Christ, the Church. "Anyone who sees his brother
sinning, if the sin is not deadly, should petition God, and thus life will
be given to the sinner" (1 Jn 5:16). "We have this confidence in God: that
He hears us whenever we ask for anything according to His will" (1 Jn
5:14).

We are about to receive in an even deeper way the very life of God —
"grace upon grace" (Jn 1:16, RSV-CE). "My little children, be on your
guard against idols" (1 Jn 5:21).

Prayer: Father, do a new thing in my life (see Is 43:19).

Promise: "We are in the One Who is true, for we are in His Son Jesus
Christ. He is the true God and eternal life." —1 Jn 5:20

Praise: Sarah has found it easy to pray always since she stopped
complaining and started praising God.
