January 13th, the baptism of the Lord

Oh Jesus, You, who are eternally free of sin, in order to give
obedience to the Father, was baptised to show us the need
we will all have to enter the baptisimal font to be freed of the
stain of original sin.

You have always been the guide to life, and You gave us an
everlasting guide through the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus, help us all to renew our baptismal promises to renounce
sin and all evil influences in our lives.

Let Your baptism renew in us the desire to serve You more
and more every day, freed from the stain of sin.

Let us joyfully come to Your church and proclaim You, by loving
ourselves, and others with true christian understanding and
charity.

Help us to forgive any who have hurt us, and let us ask for
forgiveness for any we have hurt.

Let us praise and glorify You by asking for and accepting Your
gift of love. Amen and Amen.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday IT IS BETTER TO GIVE IN

http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=1/13/2008

"Give in for now." —Matthew 3:15

The first words spoken by Jesus in Matthew's Gospel are:
"Give in for now" (Mt 3:15). On this last day of Christmas, the
word is: "Give in." Giving in is a Christmas hallmark. Mary
yielded when Gabriel announced that she would be the mother
of Jesus, saying: "I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done
to me" (Lk 1:38). Joseph "decided to divorce [Mary] quietly"
when he realized she was pregnant with a child that he had not
fathered (Mt 1:19), yet he gave in to God's will and "received her
into his home as his wife" (Mt 1:24).

Today we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. Both Jesus and John
gave in to God's will. John rightly realized that Jesus should not
be baptized by him. Yet Jesus told John to "give in for now" and
John obeyed (Mt 3:15). Jesus also embraced His Father's will
as He "voluntarily submitted Himself to the baptism of St. John,
intended for sinners." His "gesture is a manifestation of His
self-emptying" (Catechism, 1224). "He is submitting Himself
entirely to His Father's will: out of love He consents to this
baptism of death for the remission of our sins" (Catechism, 536).

God's thoughts are high above ours (Is 55:8-9). There are times
when His requirements don't make sense to us. Therefore, He
simply asks us to give in. In what areas of your life is God calling
you to give in to His will? Live your Baptism and die to yourself.
Give Jesus the Christmas present He wants: "Give in."

My name is Maria. I'm 41 and newly married (June 16 2007)
and I have an ovarian cyst. I will be having surgery on Feb. 12.
My husband and I are praying for a miracle - that the cyst will
shrink and disapear and we will be blessed with a baby. If
they have to operate, please pray that the cyst is benign and
all they have to do is drain the cyst. Please pray they do not
need to remove the ovary. Thank you so much!

Please pray that my immediate family will overcome the
obstacles we are now facing. That the alcohol addiction-
and abuse therefrom will come to an end. That the infidelity
and cheating will cease forever. And that my children and I
will survive the financial burden that all of this has put on
our family- and thus not lose our home to foreclosure,. That
I may find a job soon- so I can continue to support us. And
that someday- hopefully soon- we can all be a family again-
better and stronger than ever. Thankyou soo very much-
May God send his loving blessings down to you all......

Pope Benedict XVI

Wednesday General Audience
St. Augustine honored by Pope Benedict as "a man of
passion and faith"
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=11387

Vatican City, Jan 9, 2008 / 10:32 am (CNA).- "One of the
most important exponents of Christianity" in his time, is how
Pope Benedict XVI described St. Augustine today at the
Wednesday general audience.

This bishop of Hippo, the Pontiff said, was "a man of passion
and of faith, of exalted intelligence and of tireless pastoral
activity".

While the Holy Father acknowledged that the African saint
has a large quantity of other works, he dedicated today's
audience to reflecting on .............

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

CHRISTIAN HOPE

HOPE AND SALVATION

In hope we were saved, says St. Paul to the Romans ,
and likewise to us (Rom 8:24) (1)

"NEW LIFE"

The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes
has been granted the gift of a new life. (2)

KNOW GOD, RECEIVE HOPE

To come to know God — the true God — means to receive
hope. We who have always lived with the Christian concept
of God, and have grown accustomed to it, have almost
ceased to notice that we possess the hope that comes from
a real encounter with this God. (3)
